Melee Champions, normally Xin Zhao or Master Yi.

Position's whatever I tend to feel like at the time, mostly minion farm cause I'm not that good at the game. And even with games I am good at my weakness is normally PVP.

its good to know which roles you are interested in, as different roles have different ways to play.

It's also worth noting that laning and farming (last hitting minions) are the factors that will determine whether you will have control over your opponent or vice versa.

This might seem dumb, but what roles are there? I never have played anything similar to League of Legends, but I had played multiplayer in Battlefield 4 and Team Fortress 2. Is the roles similar to the ones in Battlefield 4 and Team Fortress 2?

As for 'laning and farming', are they similar to spawn camping in Battlefield 4 and Team Fortress 2?

I'll leave the giving advise to others, I'm only about a level 10 summoner so I'm very much still a noob myself.

Though there is one thing I still cannot get for the life of me. What in the world is the point of laning? Why does which line I run in matter depending on my build? They all seem the exact same.

The roles are twofold.
Lane Roles: Top (Top lane), Mid (Mid lane), Bot (Bot lane), Jungle (Exactly as implied, though you shouldn't start on this role.)
Character Roles: Mage, Fighter, Assassin, Tank, Support, ADC/Marksman, etc.

Most often it's a Bruiser top, Tank or Assassin jungle, Assassin or Mage mid, Marksman bot, Support bot.

Mages are most often known for their burst potential: How much damage they can do in three seconds or less. They hit you hard once and then wait to charge their abilities and hit you again. They also sometimes have crowd control. (Explained further below.)

Tanks are most often known for being very heavily armoured and having a lot of crowd control. (Crowd control stuns, slows, or otherwise incapacitates an enemy so that your team can kill them or escape from danger.)

Fighters are a hybrid: They have the defensive stats of tanks but the damage of marksmen/mages. They aren't superior to tanks at dealing with damage or marksmen at dealing damage, but mix the best qualities of both to have some survivability and damage output.

Assassins do exactly as implied: Get in, kill a target, get out. They're like mages but they capitalize specifically on squishy or important targets, like marksmen.

Supports exist solely to help their team by giving buffs, heals, using crowd controls to slow or stop the enemy, and so on. They're most often paired with marksmen in the bot lane, as marksmen have fragile early games, but a lot of late game damage output.

Marksmen are also often known as AD Carries (Attack Damage carries). They start the game out weak but become powerful late game with extreme damage outputs that no other class can match, however, they're glass cannons, and need a team to protect them.

Over time these intricacies should become pretty simple to understand. For instance: Nasus is a tank-fighter, he goes in top lane, but can jungle. Vladimir is a burst mage, he goes in mid, but sometimes goes top as he also has a lot of health which makes him a solid fighter. Vayne is a marksman through and through, and goes in bot lane with Soraka, who can heal and give mana to her allies.

TF2 is what I could see fitting better in terms of roles and dynamic gameplay. You have (in TF2) Heavy, Scout, Pyro, Medic, Sniper, Engineer, Soldier, Demo-man and Spy.

In League of Legends, you have Assassin (champions that are often equipped with abilities that renders them invisible), Fighter (champions who have high resistance and high damage value), Jungler (champions that are fighter-like, but often go to the Jungle section of the game), Mage (champions who have powerful magic attacks that are able to chunk away enemy HP), Support (champions capable of assisting the team or laning partner through heals or crowd control), Tank (champions who have the ability to withstand huge amounts damage) and Marksman (also dubbed 'adc' or 'carry' in the community, champions who rely on heavy auto attack damage with high physical damage).

Laning and Farming are one of the key essential things in a match. Laning is a phase in the game where champions are divided up into three lanes of the game, they are Mid, Top and Bottom (abbr. Bot). They push (bringing minions to tower and damaging enemy's tower) and harass (constantly dealing damage to the enemy to prevent them from farming) the enemy champion who is in your lane. Typically, fighter-like characters go to the Top lane. Mages often go to Mid lane and the Marksman and Support go to Bottom lane. Winning your lane involves not just the amount of kills you get out of the enemy team-- it's also the amount of farm or minion kills you have.

Farming in the game is part of the laning phase. Farming is when you harvest gold from either the minions or neutral monsters in the jungle (although you probably want to leave that for your Jungler). When you successfully kill a minion, you're awarded with a fixed amount of gold. 10g for Melee Minions and 15g for Ranged Minions and 39g for Artillery Minions. During your first time playing the game, you'll probably have a hard time getting minion kills. There is one way to avert that issue-- One method that pro-players also use is a method called 'last hitting'.

Last Hitting is the act of killing a minion with one hit-- thus requiring good timing to execute. The trick to last hitting is to be patient and let your minions do all the work in bringing the enemy minion's health to low and then killing it. You have to pay attention to how much health you take away from the minion and do your guess there.

Farming and Laning are simple concepts that take time to master.

Farming grants you gold input by killing enemy minions. You try to score the last hit on a minion, the killing blow, as the killing blow decides who gets the gold. Keep in mind that about 10-15 minions are worth one champion kill, so if you have 30 minions and the enemy kills you once, you are still very likely ahead of them in gold.

Laning is exactly as implied: You go into a lane (top, mid, bot) and stay in that lane. The "laning phase" is the part of the game where everyone is focusing on farming minions and harassing their enemies. Some champions do better as farmers (such as most marksmen), gaining gold in the early game to increase their supreme late game power. Others do better as harassers (such as most assassins), attacking the enemy and stopping them from getting gold by farming. The laning phase ends when the first line of towers are destroyed and people start wandering the map for global objectives, such as dragon and baron, that give gold and buffs to the whole team.

Also, fyi, buffs are things that improve your stats, such as an armour buff improves your armour, and so on.

The current laning structure hasn't changed ever since Late Season 1. Laning is practically the structure in which the team is built around. I remember in Early Season 1 the normal laning phase consisted of a Marksman Mid, Fighter pair bot and Support/Marksman top.

The reasoning I don't know, but it is the metagame that everybody expects people to play.

I guess it just has to do with the way the map is set up. Technically, you could try to bum rush mid as five - it might work against a less coordinated team. But towers in League are strong, so a few people could defend against your siege while your outer towers are left undefended, and that means inhibitors are in danger.

There isn't any clear reason for the current lane meta, but there are a couple justifications for the way it is now:

  • Putting your marksman/support bot instead of top allows you to contest dragon more easily, which is important early game when trying to snowball a lead.

  • Mages scale better with levels, while marksmen scale better with gold (damage coming from auto attacks). The support leeches EXP from lane due to minions dying near them, so it's more ideal to put the mage in a solo lane. They can level faster and then roam top or bot for ganks, which is especially good if your mid is an assassin.

  • @Rare: League is much more fun with friends! There are a lot of details to playing that aren't intuitive, especially if you've never played a MOBA before. It's a way better experience to have others show you the ropes while you play.

    That's what's normally been the answer when I ask, and it's one of the reasons I don't play League often.
    I don't like following _______ tactic, if what's reinforcing the tactic is a cultural thing, not something logically reasoned/explained.
    But because I don't blindly follow a cultural thing, players will constantly bitch during the game making the game less enjoyable.

    Alright, but that sounds more like pairing different champions properly, not a matter of ______ class is better in ______ location.

Meanwhile, this means top lane has to be capable of surviving alone for pretty much the entire early game save for the occasional jungler gank when dragon isn't an option. Ergo you want fighters up there, who can murder off minion waves quick but survive harassment from their lane opponent.

    Yumeko meidochan EUW, I main support and adc, as I think to play one role successfully you have to know the mindset of the other but I am also confident in my mid. 1 or 2 years ago, when I had enough time to waste, I was interested in E-Sports but by now I rarely watch it except some sorts of finals. And now I am looking forward to Headhunter Caitlyn skin :>

    That said, enjoy a LoL related video!

    Most don't. They just follow the meta blindly. For instance: Veigar Soraka bot lane is viable. Not great in the current meta, but completely viable.
