Man, I'm horrible with character sheets. Better late than never, I suppose.
Name: Eric Tyler
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Occupation: Thief
Appearance: Appears to be 150lbs and 5’6”, but is probably a little taller because he slouches. Dark-haired, dark-eyed, and pale-skinned. Thin but clearly out of shape. Has medium-length hair and lacks facial hair.
Personality: Detached, apathetic, and sometimes downright rude, Eric has a tendency to repel people he meets. Like any person, he has things that he cares about, but they are few, and he usually doesn't reveal them. While the awakening of his magic has given him confidence in his ability to prosper, he still thinks of himself as a bad person and is afraid of what he might do, even though he genuinely wants to change his ways and help people.
Magic/Abilities: Eric has the ability to project his consciousness into objects and control them from within. Initially, he will be rather limited in terms of what he can possess, and complex machines, living creatures, and magical objects will be beyond his capacity, but all of these may become quite possible in the future. While more complex objects require more knowledge and experience to manipulate, larger objects require more raw magical power. At first, anything too big for Eric to carry physically will probably be too big for his power as well, but he will eventually be able to manipulate objects the size of an autobus. In short, the larger the object, the more quickly Eric uses energy as he manipulates it. Resisting factors such as enchantments on magical objects or the will of a living being factor into this as well.
The utility of Eric’s power also evolves over time. At his current level he can only transfer his consciousness into an object by touching it, and can only remain in control for short periods of time. Additionally, he must remain near his body. This will progress to being able to possess a target at range, then to being able to jump from host to host without returning to his body in between, and even remaining dormant within a host to remain separate from his body for extended periods of time.
The biggest weakness of Eric’s power is that it leaves his body helpless to attack. He can’t use any of his other magical abilities from within a host, and even if he becomes powerful enough to possess things with their own magical abilities, using them is inefficient because it exhausts Eric’s energy at a much faster rate than any regular activity, and it also exhausts the host as it normally would. Theoretically, if he were to truly master this ability, Eric could abandon his body and take over a new one as if it were his own, but it is unlikely he will ever reach this level.
Bio: Growing up, Eric was what one might call a loser. His grades were poor, he wasn’t very athletic, he didn't have a hobby of any kind, and he had few friends. It wasn’t that he was a victim- in fact, he wasn’t a particularly kind person at all. Courtesy was just another entry on the list of things Eric Tyler didn’t bother with. His family tried to help him, but he remained lifeless throughout his entire adolescence.
It wasn’t until his graduation day that Eric realized he had to make a change. As he stood there, surrounded by people who were moving into their futures, the fact came to him that he wasn’t going anywhere at all, and he had nobody to blame but himself.
For the next year, Eric seemed to be frozen in time as he stayed with his parents and worked minimum wage jobs. He was sure that there was no way out of the rut he had found himself in. Eventually the sheer desperation tripped something in his brain, and his power was awoken.
Newly aware of the magical world around him, Eric pursued local sources of information and began learning his first spells, as well as developing his natural power. Things were finally starting to look up for him, as with the aid of magic he was able to make enough money to rent an apartment and support himself.
However, his living wasn’t an honest one. Eric had turned his magic on other people, and was using low-level illusion spells to cheat, manipulate, and outright steal from those who were oblivious to the existence of magic. At first it didn’t faze him. For a long time, the only thing that mattered to him was the fact that he was finally successful. He knew what he was doing was wrong, but he didn’t think about it too much.
He couldn’t ignore it forever, though, and when the guilt hit him, it hit him hard. Eric knew that benefiting at the expense of others wasn’t justified no matter how unfortunate he had been previously, but no matter how hard he tried he couldn’t stop. He was addicted to power.
Ultimately, Eric decided that there was still a lot he didn’t know about magic, and that if he were to learn more, he might find a way to live decently, and a chance at redemption. With that hope, he began to entangle himself in the world of magic.
