Are there any words you hate when people misuse?

Mine are opera and rape.

I can only think of one thing that I truly hate to hear, that being "could care less" when it's supposed to be "couldn't care less". Fuckin' hate it.

o.o I thought this thread was going to be about the Weird Al song. Heh.

That said, I can't think of any particular word misuse that grinds my gears. Bad grammar in general tends to be enough of an annoyance.

Oh, except for this common mistake.

Yeah, that's kind of embarrassing.

I only came here because I thought we were discussing the Weird Al song. But I do hate misusing words. Numbers as letters bothers me a lot. You can get away with it if "your 7 or your name is Prince."

I'm not a grammar fanatic by any stretch of the imagination, but there are a few things that irritate me. The confusion between its and it's has always bothered me for some reason.

the only thing that really annoys me is when people call me a "brummy" even though I do not live in Birmingham.

People who use irregardless. It isn't a word, and regardless means exactly what they are trying to say.

As a writer I'm pretty fast and loose with word rules anyway. So I just can't begrudge someone else and their wordly ticks. ;)

I can deal with people misusing words. Hell, I'm pretty certain I do it quite a bit as well.

Since I misuse words sometimes, I guess I don't really mind it when people do as well.

It is a real word that is essentially a way to add emphasis to a statement.

"You should probably walk down the street regardless."

"Irregardless, you should probably walk down the street."

These have the exact same meaning. It's known as a nonstandard word. That is all.

Here, have a ferret.

How do people misuse "opera"??
I agree about "rape" though. And in somewhat that vein, I hate when people use "cripple" metaphorically as in like, "bad mortgages left them in crippling debt". I use a wheelchair and I consider that a slur, but it's used very commonly in that sort of way.
