STATUS
Open, but limited -- Human characters only (regular humans or hunters)

PLOT AND SUBPLOTS
The story takes place in nineteenth century England and revolves around lycans/werewolves. The story's main focus is on the now-dying creatures we know as werewolves. Their kind rose in great and almost unaccountable numbers over the many hundreds of years, but ultimately, over the past few decades, more and more wolf hunters or just 'hunters,' as have been come to be known as, have appeared and helped diminish the lycan population to a dwindling and frighteningly low number. Lycans no longer are the masters of the night. (It is because of this great genocide that werewolves of OOC today are so rare and thus considered myth.)

This is the story of the last great werewolves, the survivors, the last ones standing that fought to the bitter end. Though many of these creatures are admirable in their physical strength and skills, the hunters now largely outnumber them, and many of these legendary creatures will fall in battle.

The roleplay will begin with a family of humans who have captured and imprisoned several young lycans (Juveniles and Youths). They believe they are helping the lycans by saving them from a world filled with hunters. However, the lycans, who (minus a few nights out of the month) are usually in human form, are being kept against their will. One newly-turned lycan will have just been captured and taken to this family's large cellar with the rest. An ancient lycan will have caught word of this and is planning on putting together a rescue mission.

An organization of hunters exists, known as SOHNS (Society of Hunters: Night Security). This society was formed by Niklos Redd, Grandfather to Rozlin Redd. Most every member of SOHNS is male, as this is the 1800's and females are still widely discriminated against, and the roles women play in society are far from hunters. However, a few select females are allowed to join if they can prove their skills as a wolf hunter. Basically, SOHNS is an organization of hunters who have banded together in an attempt to become an even more powerful entity against the lycan threat. Together, they are stronger than any single hunter. They train with one another and go over hunting strategies and also rely on one another in combat. They are a force to be reckoned with. Any Average Joe hunter is allowed join (as long as they are 18 or older), but they will be trained until they are up to a certain standard before they are allowed to join in any future hunts. Each hunting party is comprised of at least five members, one of them being the leader. Leaders can be any hunter who has been on at least fifteen successful hunts.

INFORMATION ON LYCANS
The initial lycan was created when a rabid lone wolf, driven mad by its disease and starvation, attacked a villager in northern Europe during a full moon. The man collapsed, nearly having been killed by the mauling, but when he awoke, he was no longer himself, in body or in mind. He had become part man, part wolf, operating only on instinct and a powerful desire to hunt. Whenever he attacked a person and left them alive, they too would become infected with the condition, and so the trend would carry on.

Newly created lycans are only able to transform under a full moon, and they lose all their rational thoughts and their human mind and become a pure wolf. They are not in any form of control. As lycans age however, they eventually learn to adapt and adjust to their transformations. Around the time they become ‘adults,’ they are able to fully control when and where they transform, and they also have some degree of control over themselves, if not full control. Aged lycans never lose their human minds when under transformation and can even change into their wolf forms much more quickly and painlessly.

They are much more powerful than humans, but lycans are strong only when they are transformed. Additionally, lycans are deathly allergic to silver. Ingesting silver or having silver penetrate the body in any way will cause a lycan, whether transformed or not, to eventually die if the silver is not removed in time. Simply touching silver can cause serious rashes.

There are two species of lycans - the werewolf and the wolf. Werewolves resemble part man, part wolf. They can stand on two legs and have hands. They can walk on all fours if they wish, though it is typically easier to walk upright. Werewolves do not possess tails. Wolves must always walk on all fours and do not have hands or opposable thumbs. They also have tails.

Lycans are immortal, meaning they cannot age or die of old age, but they still can be killed by selective means. Silver, as mentioned, is one way of killing a lycan. Beheading is another, as is the complete dismemberment of limbs and body parts. Religious artifacts hold no power over lycans, but the cry of a fellow lycan will beckon other lycans, whether they belong to the same pack or not. Being social creatures, lycans depend and rely heavily on each other, and it is in their instincts to protect one another. Therefore, it isn't at all uncommon for men to have captured and wounded a lycan and left it chained and in agony as bait to lure in more of its kind to slay.

In addition to immortality, lycans also have superhuman abilities. These include great physical strength, which can and does typically grow as they "level up" from Youth to Ancient, quicker-than-human regenerative healing, superhuman senses (eyesight and sense of smell especially), agility, stamina, and quick reflexes.

There are 4 different ages of a lycan: Adolescent, Youth, Adult, and Ancient. An Adolescent refers to a newly transformed human who has no control over their monthly transformations. A Youth is typically one who has gained some control over their transformations and may, at times, be able to transform upon will but who is not very powerful yet. An Adult is typically considered to be the most common type of lycan. It is someone who has been a lycan long enough to have complete control over their transformations and can also transform upon will. They are powerful creatures not to be messed with. Ancients are almost unheard of creatures, as they are the oldest living lycans whose abilities far surpass any other. They are usually the leaders of powerful packs and are highly respected. Ancient lycans usually evolve to appear much different than their original human selves. In their human forms, their eyes may look more like wolf eyes, if they’re male, they may grow more hair, their ears may grow pointier, and their nails become hard and tend to grow faster to resemble claws. In their wolf forms, other variations can be seen. They are much larger and far more muscular than they appeared as an Adolescent wolf.

-Considering suicide as a way to be free of this curse

-Cautious

-Unsure of herself

-Timid

-Generally friendly

Emma:

-Fiery

-Determined

-Abrasive…too put it mildly.

-Stubborn as a mule is an understatement.

Biographies:

Both Alice and Emma were born to a struggling farmer family, after his sons had all left or died. Their father had failing health, and more and more work was being put on their mother. As soon as Emma was old enough, she became the son of the household, helping her father and mother out as much as she was able. Marriage was out of the question, as they needed her too much on the farm to arrange a marriage to a city man, and there was no one left who could actually help on the farm. The rest of their neighbors had all either folded under the growing competition against bigger and more modern farms, or left to the city to seek a better life. Thus, Emma’s ‘womanly skills’ are pretty much nonexistent. Her father only had a crossbow and some old swords and knives for self defense, and she learned to use them as best she was able. Which means, she can shoot something and stab someone with it, but anyone with any degree of skill would beat her with one arm behind their backs and one eye closed? Still, she did the best she could, trying to support a failing farm, an ailing father, and an increasingly despondent mother. The situation only grew worse when Alice was born. As much as Emma loves her, she was just another problem on the farm. Still, Emma grew to be fiercely protective of her, even if she had her suspicions of who the actual father was. (That one traveler they housed in the barn was very charismatic…)

Regardless, things passed more or less smoothly for them up until about a week ago. They never knew if the attack was planned, or was just a werewolf losing control. Regardless, it came suddenly and very bloodily. The entire family was outside harvesting what tobacco they could from their rapidly diminishing crop, when they heard a howl. Everyone looked to see some monster, half man, half wolf, charging. Their mother was the first one to go, tackled down and torn apart. She didn’t even have time to scream. Emma’s father shouted at her to get Alice inside and to safety, and began making his way towards his wife as fast as possible. Emma didn’t see what happened, but she could figure out, judging from the snarling and screaming she heard behind her as she forcibly pushed Alice to the house. They very nearly made it to the cellar, and safety, when the werewolf came chasing after them.

Emma pushed Alice towards the cellar and tried to delay the beast. She was lucky, in a way. Rather than killing her, it knocked her out of the way. Hard. She never heard Alice’s scream bit her or the firing of flintlock pistols as the Hunters chasing the monster caught up with it. She never saw Alice run in the chaos, thinking she was dead and not wanting to be executed by the Hunters. She never saw the werewolf hole up in her house. She never saw the Hunter’s decide to burn it out, or the flames consume her house, or the werewolf throw the chest with the crossbow and what limited weaponry she had at a Hunter in a desperate escape attempt. She never saw it die, and the Hunters leave.

No, she woke up to the burned out ruins of her home, the corpses of her parents and the werewolf, a scattered chest of weapons, and clear signs that her sister was still alive and had run away. She took what she could use and salvage from the wreckage, and left immediately. Of course, she lost the trail soon after, and had only one option left. Find the local Hunter’s house, and pester them until she could learn to track and hunt werewolves well enough to find her sister. It took her almost a week to do it, but she found them, and has been stubbornly returning every morning to make her case again, and again, and again.

Alice, on the other hand, had a hellish week, terror and considering killing herself before she became a beast like all the other werewolves, of fever from infection on a cut on her arm she gained when falling away from the wolf as it bit her other arm, which was luckily put off by her transformation. When she finally came back into control of herself, she wasn’t in the middle of the woods, as she expected. Rather, she was in a cellar with other people, her infected arm was cleaned and bandaged, and she was told by someone that they were all trapped here, so that they could be ‘protected from the cruelty of the Hunters’. Realizing her situation broke what little self control Alice had left. She broke down and sobbed, curling into a ball in a corner away from everyone else.

I need to overhaul Nikita's background a bit, but I've gotten a little more information up for her.

I do have a question about abilities, though. Are there any abilities attributed to lycans aside from increased strength? I'm not looking for things like "telekinesis" or anything because it's a given that Lycans are all about the physical stuff, but what kinds of perks to Lycans overall get? When it's mentioned that Ancients are even stronger, what does that entail, just physical strength and control or something more?

As far as lycan abilities go, I kind of imagined something similar to Wolverine in the X-Men. In other words, in addition to physical strength, which can and does typically grow as they "level up" from Youth to Ancient, they also have quicker-than-human regenerative healing, superhuman senses (eyesight and their sense of smell especially), agility, stamina, and quick reflexes. Of course, there's also immortality, meaning they can live forever if they are not killed (by any of the means mentioned above under Lycan Information).

Hi, I'd love to be part of this role play, I really like werewolf movies, etc. and would enjoy participating in this!

Character Sheet:

Name: Zacharie
Species: Werewolf
Werewolf Age: Youth
Real Age: 19
Appearance: Around 5 foot 8, which, if I am correct, is tall for that time period, the equivalent of a six foot person today. Brown hair, which is grown long. Side burns which aren't short, but could by no stretch of the imagination be called long either. Dense arm and leg hair. Scattering of chest hair. Slightly muscular, but not too much muscle. Brown eyes. Has a scar on his left arm, from where the werewolf that transformed him bit him. When he transforms, he has a lighter streak down his back, as a werewolf.
Personality: Arrogant, wants to be a leader. Looks up to the Ancients, but sometimes questions Adults. He isn't afraid to bully another Youth, and would be more than happy to beat up an Adolescent if they got on the wrong side of him, which is easy to do. He is quick to get angry, and won't be calmed easily.
History: Zacharie was born to two French parents, Claude and Philomène, but he cannot remember their last name. He also had an older brother, Charles (pronounced SHAHRL), who was three years older than him. He was a farm hand on his parents' farm, and his father in particular was quite strict, and occasionally hit Zacharie. This is where he became so aggressive, along with his brother, who would beat him up to show his authority. One night when he was out on the field he got attacked by a werewolf. His father heard, and came out with a gun. Zacharie thought that he was shooting at both of them, so he ran away too. He hasn't been back there. It has been 5 years since he was bitten. He learnt to control his transformations, and is training his strength so that he can finally be considered an adult. If he ever meets another werewolf he doesn't like, or wants to prove his dominance, he will gladly beat them up, just like Charles did to him. He was captured by a family of humans, and has now been put onto their compound "for his own good".

Okay! Nikita Davar's character sheet is complete. Any Lycans who want to be a part of her pack are welcome to be. Fate, maybe Velganos should be the one - or one of the ones - from the Davar Pack that Nikita and the rest are trying to find?

I'm also working on a member of SOHNS: Joseph Allard, but his sheet is just bare-bones without meat as of yet.

My third and final character is going to be Winnie Felton, a family member of the people kidnapping Lycans "for their own good." I don't have much in her sheet yet, but I have started to explain a bit about the compound where they're holding the Lycans.

Hi gogojakeo! Thanks for posting your character's profile right away. You're more than welcome to join us, though do you think you could go into just slightly a little more detail about your character's history? I'm curious to learn a little bit more about them and their background. Does his fiery and combative nature come from anything in particular? Perhaps his father was a stern and harsh man, and so Zacharie learned to be the same way and beating up his fellow wolves is a way of showing his dominance? I'm just curious why he can be so aggressive and isn't easily calmed down and if there's a reason behind that. Anyway, welcome! :)

Awesome, sounds great, Kathryn! I like Nikita as a character a lot. Velganos could definitely be a member of the Davar Pack, though I'm a little unsure about a couple of things when it comes to the rules and Velganos. For instance, 04. Every member must have a role in human society that benefits the pack as a whole. I hadn't thought of Velganos making a living in the human world, though I suppose most lycans are integrated with humans to try and blend in, and he shouldn't be an exception. Before becoming a lycan, Vel worked as a trader, since he traveled so often and would trade for goods from one area to another. Perhaps he could continue doing something along those lines to acquire anything that might be required for the pack. I could also see him not at all being above smuggling in things from other towns or countries that aren't quite legal. Also, 09. Pack members, for their safety, will always travel in pairs or groups, never alone. Does this mean Velganos cannot walk around in human form without someone from the pack? Or does this simply apply to when they are in wolf/werewolf form?

I'm liking your character ideas so far! They will definitely help add to the story.

I'm on mobile so sorry in advance for any typos.

First, being a trader would work out fine. It keeps money and goods coming in to the pack, and it's a good cover. As the pack Beta chose to present as head of the household (which also implies business ventures), Vel would probably work with him directly. Nikita's presents as the head servant (I'll need to find out what that's actually called), but she actually has a hand in every profession each pack member chooses, just behind the scenes so as not to arouse suspicion. I think the only thing humans would suspect is that the head of the household is having an inappropriate relationship with her if they suspect anything at all.

I'll specify in the pack rules that they should never be alone when transformed (just have to wait until I have access to a computer to edit). While in human form, it's just encouraged to not be alone but it's not a rule and it's not enforced.

Name: James Felton.
Species: Human
Real Age: 17
Appearance: Blond hair, around 5 foot 5. A bit of muscle, but only from where his father has trained him to use a bow. Slim. Blue eyes.
Personality: James is kind, but can sometimes be a bit shy. He is fascinated by the werewolves living in his basement. he is especially intrigued by one that goes by the name of Zacharie, who is around his age. He wants to help them, and he understands that his family want to help them, but wonders sometimes if his family take it too far.
History: He is the grandson of the compound leader, and has grown up with his twin sister Winnie. He had grown up with the werewolves all of his life, and loved to speak to them. His father has trained him since he was 14 in the arts of the bow, using arrows that have stone tips for werewolves that are not following any rules or orders, and uses silver tips to kill. He has had a good relationship with his sister Winnie, but is more fascinated by the werewolves than her. He has sometimes contemplated asking the werewolves to turn him into one, but has heard that a newly changed werewolf cannot control himself in his wolf form, and would never be able to live with himself if he did anything to his family.

Great, thanks for doing that! Sounds good. :)

I like that we have two people now roleplaying actual characters for the compound family (rather than NPCs that everyone could control). Very cool! This is shaping up to be quite an interesting roleplay!

Okay, that sounds like it'll work then, so I'll carry over Velganos's trading/smuggling/(perhaps some thieving) skills over to his lycan world and have him deal mostly with Benedict Olivier. It could really add an interesting and entertaining dynamic that Nitka's Beta, in the public's eye, acts as the head of household, especially too since so many upperclass citizens are more likely to gossip and talk around people like Nitka, like you said in her description.

Alright, understood. There shouldn't be any issues then with Velganos being a member of the Devar Pack.

EDIT: I'd just like to say, I may end up incorporating Accalia Aero into this roleplay, since she is such a key figure in Velganos's life, though she is in a pack of her own and living her own life, so she may not even enter the picture. I just thought I'd mention it.

Also, I think we're about to that point now where this roleplay can get started. I may make the opening post this weekend if I have some free time!

Some things I want to point out and ask about...

gogojakeo, I'm going to replace 14-year-old Theodore Felton with your James Felton in the family, but I want to know if it's okay with you if I make James and Winnie fraternal twins? They're both seventeen, and if you don't want them to be twins, one of us will have to change the age of our characters, but having them be twins might be the easiest path. Thoughts?

Everyone else who has a wolf imprisoned in the Chapple Compound, in the Velganos character sheet, Fate wrote about a street drug called "dog chow" or "Temppressant." I was wondering if maybe we could adapt that for the compound? Like... maybe the Chapples offer something like it to any wolf who wants it? It's basically a drug that helps them retain their self-awareness while changed, but they would probably add a hint of wolfsbane to it to keep the Lycans from being able to change at will. They'd probably make it as a tea, and any Lycan who wanted it could have it, but they wouldn't force it on any of them because the wolfsbane can make them feel unwell (the severity is dependent on the individual).

Oh, Fate, if Vel is still taking it regularly, I imagine that he'd be relatively new to the pack. I don't see Nikita allowing her members to take something like that because being in control of oneself with their own abilities is very important to her, but she would be all for weaning him off of it while she and the pack helped him learn control instead of making him go cold-turkey. So if it's cool with you that the Chapples offer it, you'll want to consider how long he's been on it, how long he's been working his way off of it, and how tempted he'll be to take it again if the Chapples are offering it.

Ah, that's a gret idea, Kathryn. I think that would make sense that the Chapples would want to offer the drug, coupled with wolfsbane, to the prisoners in order to allow them to keep their minds intact. Here is a snippet from Velganos's character description that talks about this drug:

White Rabbit Reality said He has discovered one source of inner peace, however, in the form of powerful underground drugs, known as Dog Chow on the street, whose real brand name is Temppressant. The drugs, if taken regularly once a day, help his mind remain intact whenever he undergoes a transformation and also allows him to transform upon will. Additionally, the Dog Chow allows him to remain human, even when under stress or feeling particularly angered, when he normally otherwise would transform.

Considering most of the lycans in the compound are either Adolescents or Youths, they likely only change during the full moon anyway and therefore don't have to worry about changing at any other times during the month. Velganos is a bit unique, in that he would be an Adult lycan, if only he could control himself. He cannot transform upon will unless he takes Dog Chow/Temppressant. Also, he will transform against his will if his emotions get too out of control. Therefore, he needs to take this regularly once everyday. For all the others who only transform 3 days out of the month (I imagine lycans turn a day before the moon is 100% full, during the full moon, and one day after), they only need the drug for those 3 days.

That sounds fair to me, Kathryn, in regards to weaning Velganos off the drug. I imagine Velganos has tried in the past just by himself, but before he found your pack, he likely didn't have the willpower to learn to control himself alone. At the start of the roleplay, Velganos could still be taking Dog Chow regularly (at least once every two/three days) and will still have trouble denying himself it for fear of turning into a mindless beast, but he'll be in the process of working on it.

I think Winnie's sheet is basically done. I just haven't really bothered to fully flesh out the NPC family members aside from touches here and there. Now onto my Hunter!

Awesome, I'm reading it now!

Oh, thanks for noticing that! Fixed.

EDIT: Oh, Kathryn, I have a question about the features of the estate. Is there a separate compound where the lycans stay normally? Or is it just the cellar now that they all live in? Or is part of the mansion where the lycans live when there isn't a full moon? (I'm trying to sketch out a visual in my notebook right now at work.)

As long as they're not in what the Chapple family likes to call a "time out" in which they're kept in the cellar, the Lycans live in the Lycan part of the mansion. They aren't allowed in the family part of the mansion without supervision. During the three days of full moon transformation, they stay in the cellar. The Lycan part of the house is at the back half, and the cellar is built behind and underground the Lycan part.

OMG! Please do sketch out a visual because that is perfection. I tried to create one in Paint, but my skills for maps/layouts simply do not exist.
