I've finally acquired a laptop to try, once-again, at this hobby. I haven't any idea what I'd like to participate in as far as Genre, but I'm fairly certain I could go for a casual-level play, with up to two people(three total, including me).

I would direct anyone reading this to reference my previous roleplays to get an idea for my abilities, but since my resume` died with the old guild, you'll have to take my word for it. I assure you, I won't disappoint.

So the pros are: I'm a decent roleplayer who is pretty much a clean slate, willing and able to do any text-based roleplay; What could the cons be? Possibly everything noted as a pro, including that I may go up to a week without posting.
I start school next week, and though I will have pretty consistent access to the internet, my time will be tediously managed. I can promise at least one decent post on an above-casual level(I would say advanced, but we'll see what "above-casual" amounts to in your opinion, first) per week.

If it's allowed--*gasp* he didn't read all the rule stickies-- I'll leave this topic open for discussion with potential partners in this slow-parade of a role-play to be.

Peace

Slow parade of a role-play, eh? Hehe, I'm looking for a new story as well, most of my other threads have gone inactive. And I know what you mean, losing your stuff with the old guild. I'm kinda sad I never made copies of IC posts, but then again you never expect a website to off and disappear. XD

So you have this pretty open-ended, and I already like how you write, but I'm not sure what kind of genre you're into. For me I enjoy fantasy, sci-fi, modern, apocalyptic, or anything with a hint of magic. Adventures are glorious, battles are fun even I tend to lose, and I love a creative narrative. :3

I honestly had lost hope in this thread; I'm glad I thought to check-back(which probably had much to do with adding a link to my bookmarks bar in Chrome). I appreciate the reply and apologize that it took me almost a week to see it. This pace is probably what our roleplay will time to. If that's a problem then I guess we're done, and I'll wait for the next individual.

Regarding genre: how about a modern sci-fantasy based in apocalyptic times? I actually once started a roleplay titled "Beyond the Horizon." It took place on a island, with steam-punk-esque technology(think steamboy(?)) and a slice-of-life beginning with a declining apocalyptic tone.

The story opened with characters first meeting and interacting via their routine daily schedules, which happened to land them in a bakery/deli type restaurant -and if the story had progressed despite players losing interest or falling to RL issues we would have explored the origins of a wrought individual, who smelled of degradation as he shuffled into the place.
The truth was, that this continent-sized island was the proverbial center of the world, shrouded in mystery to the nations surrounding it; veiled by the firmament that kept it sealed-off from the pollution and population of the aging civilizations of the rest of the world. Finally, they had punctured the veil and were ready to invade and investigate all of its secrets.
The players would be dropped from their slice-of-life melodramatic adventures into intense fight-for-survival and lesser-evil situations as they got to know each-other and the foreigners that are tearing their lives apart.

Magic and other forms of supernatural influences will be far from barred. I'll probably incorporate monsters in the sea around the island and forces unseen that have kept the outer-world from reaching into the utopia for up until the present.
Character sheets would be general and only include details that would help develop the plot in more than an action-based level. We'll need love-interest, friendship, conflict, karmic retribution and conviction.

Aside from that I've also been trying to get a good roleplay started set in Hell, like, the place. The idea of interacting and adventuring through the darkest of places with the darkest of anti-heroes seems really exciting, but I've yet to come up with a solid plot. Non-linear seems like it would get way out of hand --fast.

Dabble through this and give me your feedback, I'll be waiting eagerly, though my response time will be based on how work and classes go for the rest of the week. I have next Monday off, so perhaps by then I'll be back on.

Good to hear from ya, Isudae. ^^

A slow pace, as long as it's consistent, sounds perfect to me. Almost all my roleplays at the moment have come to a grinding halt from people disappearing, mainly from waiting on other posts too long. I'm usually on here every day, and my posts are frequent, so we shouldn't have a problem with this sputtering out on us. :)

Now, I haven't seen Steamboy, so when I get the chance I'll see if I can find it online. Steampunk has always been an interesting genre, and a bit difficult to visualize, but post-apocalyptic is definitely one of my favourites and I'd be down to do something like Beyond the Horizon. It sounds like a really intense world to explore, and I do enjoy me some magic and phenomena. :D

Both of us would be roleplaying a multitude of characters, so I guess there's no need to create huge character sheets, haha. How big should this initial group of heros be? Four people? Five?

Ah, while reading your paragraph on Hell I was getting little ideas here and there -- underworld RPs are just so fun. I'd love to do something with that too, cuz confronting the Devil on a Deal gone wrong would be just the beginning of where that roleplay could go. But it's whatever you feel more strongly about, that's what we'll go with. I'm personally finding a lot of interest in 'tearing down the veil' in Beyond the Horizon. XD

Mm, I can work on a couple CSes if you could start a thread for us. I'll be following your lead while we organize and get this roleplay ready to rock. I think this is gonna be a good narrative, and I'm excited to work with you. :)

I'm not opposed to having a third or fourth join us, though keeping it to the two of us would ensure the integrity of the overall experience. I have a pretty solid contact list, so whatever medium you choose, I welcome friendly reminders and such(though I did have a partner on here once that was virtually stalking me. Like, virtually. Stalking. Posting every couple hours was a requirement, and sleep a privilege).

The reason I chose a steam-punk theme--though a lot of my inspiration comes from various anime-- was for the stylistic value. The steam-powered structures in SteamBoy look to me like mechanical rainforests, amazon jungles of copper, tin and iron. I would highly recommend it to anyone, though it’s only a visual reference regarding this roleplay. The stories are nothing alike.

We don’t have to get incredibly in-depth with the Character-sheets, but I do want the characters to be fleshed-out well. With the two of us trying to cover the many roles that are bound to spring up from this plot, I feel like a lot of the character complexity will be lost, but we can make up for that with the over all progression.

I was actually able to find some bits from my posts in the previous version of this rp --thank goodness for GoogleDocs-- so I’ll put them up for you to see. I’ll wait for you to reply before committing to an opening post.

Now, I don't have any samples from others' posts, so you can't see the contrast in characters, but believe me, it was nice. We'd face the challenge of creating that natural contrast in characters from just our two minds.
Something else you should notice is the laid-back, "slice of life" tone this post takes. I think it will also beautifully contrast later-on with the darker tone the plot will gradually take. We will proceed from happy and bustling, to panicked and scurrying.

I'm not opposed to that either (that tecnically means less work), so if either of us find an extra person, the more the merrier. Oh god, I get reminders, but virtual stalkerism is definitely on a whole other level. I'm a lot more casual, I think. Roleplaying is a hobby, and if you don't get around to writing, then you simply don't get around it and the world moves on.

Well I will agree with you, the visual aesthetics of steam punk are definitely there. Steam, copper, iron... I'll defnintly have to research more into it, but I like trying a new kind of genre. It forces me to think outside the box, that's what this is all about. :p

With all my novel-length CSes, that wont be a problem. And that may not be necessarily true, authors write all their characters all the time, and there's still diversity and complexity. Hehe, I'm sure we'll be able create lots of different flaws and developments.

Nice post! I did notice the slice of life going on, it's such a good way to show contrast as the story progresses to darker and more intense themes. I agree with your vision, and I look forward to that first post.

I can work on some CSes, but I fear I may not be able to put too much in them yet, just from limited knowledge. Gosh, I really should watch that movie...

Well hey, welcome back to RP'ing. I guess. I think.

If you're looking for diversity I guess I may have something. Though so far in the testing I've done it's sort of plied around the edges of being pretty different. Not so much in execution, I've seen a lot of alternate history RPs. But I don't think the concept of this alternate history would be necessarily "attractive" to western (or Otaku) audiences. Which is a shame.

Been considering making a general interest check. But I'm not sure if anyone wants to take on the concept of Ahl al-Adl wa Tawhid. Or a history influenced by such a school.

With my schedule, this is strictly a hobby. A humble nudge is all you'll ever get from me.

Steamboy was the first reference that came to mind, simply because I don't have a lot to draw from. It's not the foundation of the setting. We might encorporate some similar devices just for fun, though(In the movie, there's a device with virtually limitless capacity for steam pressure, conscequently turning it into the jetpack you'll see the protagonist using in the sneak-peeks and previews). Couple that with supernatural and magical elements that we have agreed will be welcome in the plot, we should have plenty to work with.
I am conflicted on how much of the concept I want to reveal to you and whomever-else may play, because I want things to unfold in a manner that will be satisfactory for all parties, though with some of the ideas I've got, shock-value might be worth a lot. I'm confident they'll be a success, but there's always doubt.

Novel-length character sheets might be a bit much, considering all the starting points will have to be centered around the continent(Vue de Mer - French, for "Ocean city" or something, I forget exactly what. In my post I mentioned "Perles Cachees," also French, "Hidden pearls" or some-whats-it; which is the body of water that surrounds the continent.) because noone has ever traveled very far from the place, thus concealing the place from the world-community and vice-versa.
We can develop characters that come into play later, from the exterior, but we start within.
Character-sheets should be focused on appearances, personality, and a bit of depth--I'll let the city's demeaner kind of, reveal itself through the characters, so feel free to live a mundane utopian life through the past of your characters--regarding their history.
If you want, you can throw up any old template and I'll just follow that and we'll work it to the best of our ability. I'd feel like we'd be collaborating better, with a give-take kind of rhythm. I'm not worried about any red flags popping up during the development of the details, the basic adventure is my main focus.

I'll start writing an opening post as soon as I finish this one, so you should be able to preuse it by the time you finish reading this reply. My first post will be much longer than my typical, so be patient if I end up choking out a few lines. I'm sure I'll end up playing on that "It's a hobby" line you used earlier before we finish this thing.

Regarding Dinh AaronMk: Thank you. I'm not necessarily looking for general diversity(Not re-reading my first post to check myself on that) but my plot does require a versatile writer, without being too cliche` or flashy.

You haven't really made yourself clear. I'm not sure if you're interested in this thread, or are inviting me into your own idea. If it's the former, I'd more than welcome you. Though I am not interested in joining another rp. I hardly have time for this one, let alone others. I would undoubtely lose track of one or the other if I attempted, and have no interest in failing at participating in two, where I could succeed in one. I am sorry if I disappoint you.

I encourage you to post an interest check; this forum has not gained it's steady popularity for nothing. It is a hub for individuals who enjoy all forms of online socializing and creativity. You'll likely find someone with similar tastes should you look in the right board. The IRC is also a great resource. It's located at the top of the forum in the left-hand corner next to "Roleplayer Guild - Users -..." Click and join the room and you'll definitely find someone to point you in a more specific direction.

Estylwen: for now I'll wait for you to post a character-sheet template while I write the opening post. After that point will work on initiating the main plot and start progressing to some sub-plot ideas I've got. If you know a person that may be up for joining, please direct them here.
I don't want more than 4 people total. AaronMk may be our third, so if you bring someone, we'll top-out (You and I could easily recover from the loss of two writers, but more than that and we'll bog down beyond recover).
I'm one male character, so one capatible female would give us our love-interest/romance angle, one more couple would be ideal, though non of the characters can be attached in the beginning. I could create one but it would be more fun to play off another person. You can be whichever you like and we'll deal with it.

After your next post I'll likely have this thread moved to casual or advanced forum for our OOC thread, to save time from creating another thread. You decide which forum you want to play in our next exchange and I'll get it done. If you like I could just summarize and create another, just let me know.

With that, I'm off to my devices: anticipation high.

I could do with a roleplay with a slow but consistent post rate. I'm more casual than advanced, however.

I'm not great at steampunk, but I like the setting. The Beyond the Horizon idea is really interesting because it seems like the islanders would have different responses to the invaders and the veil being punctured, depending on their character. Are the outside threats bad in varying degrees and diverse / un-unified? It sounds like you have a couple ideas, so I don't want to pry too much. I actually had a concept for an outsider character, but it may not be congruent with your background of the story at all. (Basically: someone who sees the island as a safe haven to escape too, and then wants to kick everyone else out once she's there. Pretty selfish, and not so saint-like. Although this doesn't really work if the punctured veil is a permanent thing, which would mean that the island will never return to its former state.) I think in an original roleplay, it takes some time for everyone to get on the same page for what the world is like, and I certainly don't want to make a character that doesn't fit in with the background.

So, with that I'll say I'm interested in joining up. Is there a lot of magic in this universe? Magic creatures but light magic for humans? Magic more along the line of "magitech" and enchanted stuff?

Ah, if BTH (hehe, it looks like an acronym for a certain curse) is more of an original world I think some basic descriptions of what the island looks like, maybe how it function, other highlights we should know, should be in place before we start the IC. I'll be the first to say that I love a narrative surprise, so if you need to hide certain details that's perfectly fine.

A mundane, happy history is the easiest to write. Kay, we won't go too overboard with character sheets, I'll just find something simple to get us started. If we're talking about give-take-ness, I'm not sure how much definite control you want over the plot and stuff, but if I get any ideas while we go through the story I will let you know.

First posts are the most fun to read, and that's half the reason. Hehe, there's no pressure.

Hm, it would seem this thread has found another person, so I think we might be guaranteed to have at least three, if not four of us playing. If yours will be male, I typically like starting off with females, so I could create that compatible love interest. Naturally following the process of falling in love is always so fascinating. XD

Let's shoot for the stars! I think we could handle Advanced. And I have two CSes below, choose which one you like better. I'll start filling in a sheet for my character in the meantime.

There's my starting character, slightly modified from his original, but maintains the same concept. I just left in the "Other" section in case something comes to mind later, but it's not incredibly important. (I also, kind of, bastardized the two CSes together by accident. I hope this still works, Estylwen. If not, I'll fix it)

Lunaire, thank you! I polished this little gem from a twinkling thought a couple years ago and have only put it into play once before, to little fortune.

The "Island" is actually more of a hidden continent. Not savvy on my georgraphy, so make fun, laugh, patronize, wutever: I'd say it was about the size of Australia. The metropolitan area situated near the ocean, with amazon-ish rainforest dominating the inner-most part of the island. Scattered settlements and tribes throughout. We could say that Vue de Mer would be on the southern end, with colder, mountainous land furthest north. Swamplands to the east and Industrial manufacturing to the far west where the climate is much like central north America.
I know that this description seems really vague, but it’s the best I can do for now. I’ll need help to really flesh out the more intricate details of the environment.

The "veil" that is to be punctured is a seemingly magical firmament that surrounds the island like a dome, letting only the sun through. It keeps all the plantlife and such perfectly saturated. Rain is extremely rare on the island, but they have never experienced severe drought, even in the hottest, drying region of the island.
I will let you guys run free when it comes to wildlife. We can have anything we want, considering anything that has ever lived in this place, has never gone extinct. Inexplicably, the ecosystem never crashes or becomes unbalanced.

Your character could actually arrive on the island simultaneously as the World Government that is investigating. Magic and super-natural elements we still mostly be alien to them(Not so alien to those on the island, but not exactly mainstream or common knowledge), so if your character has some kind of magic item that we could use as an explanation for them being able to access the place, it would be perfect. It could also give you considerable advantage, given your goals.(Hell, I may make you the major plot-device. Perhaps you’re the reason the world-government was finally able to detect this slice of heaven, hmm?)

The island's capital, is Vue de Mer. The body of water surrounding the continent is called Perles Cachees. There are five main areas but no distinct lines draw anywhere, just use your imagination to piece all this together.

Vue de Mer is toward the South, about 50 miles or so from the sandy beaches that line that region. In the center are amazon-like jungles and animals of all types, shapes and kinds. Good visual would be King Kong, with Jack Black. Moving easterly to the coast, you'll find marshlands. Though dank and mucky, this region flourishes with plant and animal life like the others, with -albeit smaller- settlements speckled few and far between. To the west we have dryer, rural lands with small forests and more established settlements and farms. Moving in a south-eastern direction back toward Vue de Mer, one would go from the western lands into the industrial district. It is a smaller than it’s parent city regarding population, but houses nearly the same amount of infastructure and structure in general. Production of frozen goods, secure storage for livestock feed, and general purpose equipment all comes from here.

Noone has ever been recorded leaving the island to come back, neither has anyone ever been recorded coming from anywhere else beyond the island. Vessels and steam-balloons have been lost, sailing for days into the blue hue of that endless horizon, never finding its end or anything beyond it.

Let me get some more feedback before I continue writing the opening post (I haven’t got much so far anyway, but for a lack of time, with some tests this week) so I can incorporate ideas you guys have.

Lunaire, please use one of the CSes Estylwen has provided and submit a character sheet. Estylwen you can do so as well. I look forward to reading them. I wouldn’t require pictures in the profiles, though.

I’m going to go ahead and confirm the three of us, as Dinh seems to have started another roleplay. I’ll also be messaging a Mod to have this thread moved to Advanced OOC. If we fall beneath the standards for that forum, worst case-scenario we get moved to Casual anyway. No worries. Do your best guys. I may not wait the full week before posting the Opening, so don’t hate me if you see a link to it here before a week has passed.

I am eager to see everyone’s characters interact in the story and look forward to a long, healthy experience with you guys.

Cheers for now.

(If I over-looked anything just shoot me a pm or post here. Despite my posting schedule, I keep a pretty regular eye on this thread.)

Roleplay is up.

Enter somewhere relatively close to Tawara if you want to get some interactions going. I'll initiate the plot once everyone is in.

Posting this here because it's still a working character concept.

Ivy Kachess | 24 | female

Personality: If you were to liken her to a type of explorer, Ivy would be the one seemingly present in her surroundings, yet constantly stealing glances at the distance. Despite (or perhaps because of) having lived an undifficult life, she finds herself on the lookout for something... more. Vague dissatisfaction is nothing unique in a would-be adventurer, but paired with the sense that things will always turn out for the best, it manifests as surprising recklessness. Ivy doesn't require a plan in order to act, as she simply does what feels right at the time. She is often too self-absorbed for subtlety.

Background: By the grace of her father's work, Ivy grew up as an unwilling beneficiary of the war-making World Government. In the inner sanctum of the capital, being a faraway witness to the imperium's ruthless colonization efforts was the only price to pay for an acceptable standard of living. Orin Kachess was the renaissance man responsible for discovering untapped energy sources for the government to scrape up. Ivy didn't exactly approve of the World Government's shameless exploitation and pollution, but in a country starved of resources, she had little choice in the matter. When her father wasn't there to regale her with stories of his travels, she chased away the boredom by reading about various subjects: the past, mostly. It was a way to withdraw from the endless political machinations all around her. Yet when Orin came home with a mysterious artifact and a tale about an uncharted continent, Ivy couldn't help but to indulge her curiosity and follow this clue to its logical conclusion.

She's an outsider character, so I assumed a bunch of stuff. Like, I assumed that the World Government... governs the world, but they have to stamp out the occasional rebellion. I can tweak stuff as needed. As you can see, she is in possession of this magical item that is the key to the beyond: a non-functional, unwieldy giant sword? A small box that no one can open? xD I'm wondering how she can get in on the festivities with Tawara if she were to come in immediately. Perhaps Ivy left on the World Government's coalition to this place and ditched them at some point to see the island for herself. But that means the integrity of the firmament wavered with no one noticing.

So, a question or a few, Anime.

Basically, the plot is something along the lines of...slice of life in the island before the Fire Nation comes, right? Does that mean that all characters should be World Government, or something else?

(Hehe, nice reference.) Nah, it might actually be more interesting if your character lived on the island. That kind of contrast from slice-of-life to the terrible world beyond would be dynamite. ;)

Totally up to you, though.

So, for confirmation, this is a steampunk Occidental RP in which a peaceful world is destroyed with the introduction of invaders of the outside world?

Would this be a fitting picture in terms of atmosphere pre-invasion?
