To most of the population, life continued on no differently. They were largely unaware of an event called 'Godfall', where many gods from different religions and beliefs were torn from their planes of existence and thrust upon earth by 'The One.' 'The One' believed it should be the only god, and it went by many names in todays age. God, Buddha, Jehova, Allah, etc. And by enacting 'Godfall,' became the only entity to occupy a heavenly space.
The gods that fell to earth and were cast into mortal shells. They despised 'The One,' but found themselves powerless to do anything about it. But to maintain their existence, they had to feed upon humans. To some this involved blood, to some more carnal measures, to some energy, to some life itself. Each god fed from mortals in a different manner, taking something against their will. And thus their grizzly existence continued, dreaming of a day when they could return to their realms and seek revenge against 'The One.'
The only thing that could kill these gods, and send them to a cursory state jokingly called 'purgatory' by those in the know, was weapons forged from the bones of god themselves. One god, by the name of Baldr, the Norse god of Light, sought people that he felt could handle job of killing these gods-turned-mortals. He informed them of the events of 'Godfall' and then sacrificed his body, turning it into five godly weapons of his bones.
