Trespassers

The year is 2731,

You're an employee for the Outertech Corporation, working in a small deep-field observation station located on the planet Miasma, in the Derantone System.

Your twenty-four month contract is drawing to a close, and already a majority of the station's inhabitants have begun the long journey back to their homes. However, due to a mandatory overtime order from Corporate Head Office, you've had to stay behind a while longer to keep the various systems running, until relieved by the next shift of colleagues.

It's no so bad; in fact, it's good credits. Sure you'll have to run things on a skeleton crew, and work your ass off with barely any sleep for a few weeks - but it'll be worth it. No one can argue with a double-time pay rate, not in these times of economic instability.

As you prepare yourself for a marathon run of pristine ergonomics, the station's internal emergency alarms are activated. The bright artificial lighting diminishes to a red glow, and a computerised voice calmly advises you to head to the cafeteria.

You and your colleagues do as you're told; emergency protocols exist in places such as these for a reason. Following the station's automated, semi-intelligent instructions saves lives - they banged this much into you back at Corporate.

As the cafeteria's doors slide open, there are screams and shouts of alarm, as you and your co-workers look upon the badly mangled body of your Shift Supervisor Eddie Rowe. The dozen stainless steel tables that you had dined on only an hour previous are slick with his blood, and his entrails are hung around the place like grim Christmas decorations.

Immediately, you file a report to Corporate, demanding judicial assistance. However, your transmission is cut short, and a textual reply takes over the screen of the station's communications station:

*** PLEASE STAY CALM. ACCIDENT HAS BEEN REPORTED TO EARTH HSE. MAINTAIN STATION OPERATIONS UNTIL INVESTIGATORS ARRIVE. ETA: 2 WEEKS ***

Knowing there is a murderer in your midst, the idea of returning to work is an unsettling one. You look at your colleagues, and they at you; everyone analysing each other, trying to work out who had the motive, and who had the strength to do that kind of butchery.

However, without the station's basic life-assisting systems maintained, you'll all stumble into difficulty soon enough. With this in mind, an agreement is struck. The body is removed to the Medical Bay, and undergoes an autopsy. Meanwhile, everyone else returns to work, albeit uneasily.

Two weeks, right? You can make it, psycho-murder or no. Just don't go anywhere alone, and as per the standard operating procedure, LOCK YOUR DOOR AT NIGHT!

Information Bank

Unknown to the Characters

What triggered the alarm?

An external breach to one of the station's oxygen exhausts was detected. CCTV footage of the area suffered an unidentified disruption. The characters will be aware of the breach, but not the cause.

Who killed the shift supervisor?

Remember, this is uknown to the characters. As far as they're concerned, the suspect is human.

Why is Outertech being dismissive of the situation?

Because they are aware of the creature's presence, and do not want the staff killing it before their "Collection" team can capture it for analysis. They also do not wish for any witnesses to survive the situation.

As the staff come to realise what's really happening, there may be a sudden communications failure with the station, as Corporate Office tries to stifle any attempt to get word out.

For the time being however, they're banking on everyone remaining calm, long enough for the "investigators" to arrive and take care of the situation. Or, for the station's A.I to act according to Containment Protocol 797.

What does the "alien" want?

I don't know. Try talking to it and see how that goes.

The station's self-managed semi-intelligent systems are programmed to exterminate foreign bodies from the site.

And as far as its concerned, everyone present in the canteen at the time of the grim discovery is considered contaminated and liable to liquidation. Terminally. It will attempt to murder people, subtly. Opening random air locks as people pass by them, is just one way it might do this. Another way would be to seal someone in a room, and divert CO2 from the Oxygen Management Systems into it. Any evidence of the AI's destructive behaviour will be well hidden, and it would take a dedicated software engineer to stand a chance of seeing the bigger picture. Everything will just seem like a series of real nasty freak accidents or system malfunctions, until someone connects the dots.

So who are these investigators being sent to investigate the happenings?

A black-ops mercenary team, under the direct employ of Outertech. They have orders to kill everyone in the facility, to shut down all A.I systems, and to capture the creature.

Remember, this is not known by the characters.
Rules

- At least one post every 48 hours, to avoid blocking others.

- Players who will be absent for a while need to say so in the OOC.

- No one kills the alien, without the GM's approval.

- No one kills another player owned character, without the owner's approval.

- Ensure your character does not stray out of their skillset. For example, a security officer is unlikely to know how to operate heavy duty tools like nail guns and laser cutters. A technician is unlikely to know how to treat a serious wound. Etc etc.

- Do not try to win. This is not a game. It is a creative writing based roleplay.

Character Name: Gerardo Valdez

Character Age: 37

Character Gender: Male

Character Augmentations: Left hand is robotic, owing to an industrial accident he suffered some years ago. It's an older model, as he hasn't the credits to upgrade it. A power core is required to operate it, and they last two weeks on average.

Character Appearance: Gerardo has a black ponytail, and a frizzy black beard. His skin is of an olive coloured quality, owing to his ancestral routes as an Earth Spaniard. He stands at around 5'8 tall, and is of a stocky build resulting from the physical nature of his occupation.

Character Employment Role: Maintenance Engineer

Character's Brief History: Gerardo has drifted from various engineer-related contracts for much of his working life, never staying more than a few years with any one company. As a result, he's built up a wealth of experience about the workings of various machinery and plant. It was during such work, that he lost his left hand when an automated steel cutter activated itself whilst he was working on it. The credits required to replace the lost limb has left him with a ton of debt, which he has constantly struggled to repay.

His stint at the A-19 Deep-Field Observation Station on Miasma is financially motivated. The pay is good, and whilst he works for the Outertech Corporation, they subsidise his medical bills. Truth be told, if he survives his current employment contract, he may well stay with the company until he reaches retirement - so long as they continue to honour their subsidies.

Name: Fynn Simons
Age: 27
Gender: Male
Augmentations:
Electronic Impulse Relay - originally during the procedures that he under went the growth of a new spinal chord looked to be too difficult so they opted for the technological route, deploying Electric Pulse cables down his regrown spine to merge with the rest of his nervous system using synthesized stem cells, though it did work and the body was able to use it it had one side effect, which wasn't really that bad, actually it was really useful. it streamlined his nervous system making it faster and smoother increasing his rate of reaction.
Electronic Servo Joints - Now in this case it wasn't complexity that drove the doctors to give him mechanical joints it was that growing the joints was a waste of time and too expensive when machines were cheaper and could do the the job just as well, so they gave him those instead. They increased the speed at which he could move his joint but only if they are charged regularly with exercise otherwise they will only work using energy from metabolized sugars which will keep them at regular speed. This power can be depleted over time and could cause a motor burn out, knocking him unconscious.
Appearance:

Divesuit - http://www.deviantart.com/art/Primum-Mobile-Bastard-Suit-361578920

Employment Role:
Water Maintenance Specialist
Brief History:
He found himself working for Corperation after a strange route of events that befell him earlier in life, at around 20 he was hit by a transport train in a freak accident, it happened to be one of the Corporations so to avoid a public scandal they payed to have him fixed, growing him new organs and setting his bones back in place, however all this was done reluctantly because it costed a fortune to bring him back from the brink of death. After a year of recovering in a medically induced coma he was woken up by a company representative and his situation was explained and the full cost details were given to him, it'd been a year after the incident and media hype had died down so naturally the company was no longer cautious about presenting a bill for their services to him.
Times were tough and the amount of figures on the bill was enough to make a bank cry so Fynn pleaded with them for another option to pay, they offered him a hand full of different jobs most of which he was unqualified for or didn't appeal to him until he was given the opportunity to go and work on Miasma, he took with enthusiasm and went through an engineering course until he finally majored in Fluid Dynamic Engineering. Right after his graduation he was driven to the launch pad and flown off as fast as possible, the corporation not wanting the media hounding him. He wasn't going to tell them anyway, that would have destroyed his chances of going to space and he desperately wanted to.
When he arrived at Miasma it was a bustling station on a planet with beautiful scenery but he didn't get to enjoy it often, usually spending his days at the bottom of the large underground cistern, repairing the constantly leaking pipes or changing out filters, doing day to day jobs to maintain the water supply of the station. However every time he reemerged from the blackness of the underground reservoir there were a few less people, being called back to earth to be swapped with fresh employees, this kept happening until it was just him and a few others left, then the incident happened and all of a sudden being trapped at the bottom of near bottomless water filled fissure wasn't all that unsafe, especially when knowing that he was the only one with a divesuit because no one else wanted the job.

Character Name: Molly Ashmole-Hakim

Character Age: 32

Character Gender: Female

Character Augmentations:

Molly was born partially deaf in her right ear and became accustomed to wearing a hearing aid from a young age. Upon reaching her teenage years her family opted to have her fitted with an artifical Cochlea as well as an Aurcile Frame to help improve signal transduction, gradually increasing the function of the Organ of Corti. Today, Molly has a balanced and dependable range of hearing, although her augmentation can occasionally lapse due to its long-term use, as well as being an outdated model. Molly has plans to look into more recent models when she returns to planet.

Character Appearance:

Built short, slim-framed and with only the slightest cord of muscle, Molly is not especially suited for heavy-lifting or exacting physical force. Her posture is more or less permanently hunched forward, too used to being leaned over a desk or dashboard, peering at a screen or working a transmitter. Her eyes are blue and sit above heavy eyebags and between a small nose that crooks to the left. She has short, curly dark-red hair with strands of grey weaved through as the first signs of steadily approaching age.

Character Employment Role:

Communications Officer, previously the second comms technician on the Station, but temporarily promoted to first upon the departure of her superior. As such, Molly, and a small team (of npcs) are responsible for maintaining communications on the station for the duration of two weeks. In addition to this, Molly is responsible for archiving the stations observation patterns, for the purpose of condensing any progress and results and sending them to Corporate.

Character's Brief History:

A turn of the century child, Molly Ashmole was born in New Aberdeen in December 2699, to Sophie and Jonathan Ashmole, a pair of civil servants primarily tasked with tax collection and maintaining revenue reports. As such, Molly grew up in a comfortable and mundane household of numbers and order and, asides from her hearing loss and her subsequent augumentation, never experienced anything that distrupted from this perfectly ordinary life. Molly left School with high marks and, interested in languages, pursued a degree in Linquistics at University, advancing onto a Masters in Technical Communications. Whilst doing her Masters degree, she met her future Wife Nadereh, the two becoming engaged shortly before Molly become employed by Overtech Corporation as a Switchboard Technician, and married upon Molly's successful return from her first off-planet post in Practical Communications.

Though she had originally sworn not to take on a contract that included a duration of more than six months, Molly was flattered enough by being personally recommended for placement on the Miasma station by First Communications Officer Derrik Edlund, that she accepted the placement with fairly little deliberation, calming her Wifes concerns, citing that the steady, increased income would help them save enough money to eventually start a family.

Notes: Since you didn't say that Overtech was based in any one country I'm going on the assumption that Overtech is an international organisation. However if it is based in a specific location, are the companies origins solely linked to one geographical location, or is it a multinational conglomorate, similar to Weyland-Yutani? I'm just asking this since my character is specialised in linquistics and communications, I was wondering if there are any compulsury languages she's had to learn? At the moment I'm tentatively listing her as fluent in three languages, English, French and Mandarin, so for the purpose of both character building and world building please let me know if any of these languages are extinct by this point.

other notes: yes that photo is from that terrible film we don't talk about

Character Name:
Dr Flint Whiteshorn

Character Age:
28

Character Gender:
Male

Character Augmentations:
None

Character Appearance:

Character Employment Role:
Doctor/Chief surgeon.

Character's Brief History:
Flint was brought up in a military household, and in return he was expected to join the military just like his brother and father, but Flint was never like that. He much preferred helping people then blowing their brains out.
He signed up to the Outertech Corporation after he had left medical school and saw a flyer looking for doctors. He soon climbed the corporate ladder and appointed head surgeon. When his contract was up he was given mandatory overtime, the company believing having a high class doctor stay would mean that they could have less medical staff on board to pay overtime. Flint was glad to stay, loving his work and having no real free time to speak of. Stress has recently been getting the better of him recently however, and alcoholic tendencies have been riddling his evenings alone.

I'll get my character sheet done after I'm finished with Halloween shopping. Going to make a security officer, because someone has to keep order around here.

Solamelike, seems like your image is broken. Might be a good idea to upload images to imgur so that you can make sure that they'll work. I already went ahead and reuploaded the image, so feel free to use this URL instead.

[b*]Character Name:[/b] Thomas "Tito" Lopez

[b*]Character Age:[/b] 57

[b*]Character Gender:[/b] male

[b*]Character Augmentations:[/b] Due to an accident early in his engineering career involving an auto-manufactor and the buckles on his gloves, both of Tito's arms are robotic. They're not civilian models either, they're industrial grade prosthetics designed to best assist someone with tasks related to engineering. They're heat-resistant, shock-proof, and provide some degree of augmented strength, although this strength boost isn't all that substantial. He can lift items that weigh around 200 pounds with some effort.

[b*]Character Appearance/personality:[/b]
Tito Gervais is a rather simple looking man. His facial features are set plainly on his face, almost mirroring the practical nature of his profession. His icy blue eyes accentuate his short, well-kept white beard and short hair. His build is lean, yet relatively fit. His skin is a bit pinker than the average human (since his body produces the same amount of blood, but there's two less limbs for it to go to), and he stands at about 5'10.

His personality is complex, to say the least. Life on a space station has him used to extremely rigid engineering schedules, and most of the time one talks to him, he's irritable and foul-tempered. He's rigid by practice, and is prone to taking the most practical solution to any situation. He wants to be more friendly, but stress usually drives him to less friendly responses. He's also notorious around the station for his smoking habits, and can almost always be found with a cigar in his mouth, or a cigarette when he's out of those.

[b*]Character Employment Role:[/b] Chief Engineer

[b*]Character's Brief History:[/b] Thomas was born to two poor parents, in the slums of New Madrid. No one ever really expected to amount to much, but at around the age of eight, he started displaying a unique curiosity towards his father's car. His father, a lower-ranked police officer, indulged the young Thomas, and allowed him to look under the car's hood and get familiar with all the nuances. By the time Thomas was 14, he knew the engine of his father's patrol car like the back of his hand. In school, he showed an aptitude to technical pursuits, and his parents planned to send him to a prestigious engineering college, when the worst happened.

At the age of 19, just after graduating from high school, Thomas' father was killed in an armed altercation at a clinic, and most of the money that was saved for Thomas' college instead went to the funeral. Thomas was quick to move on to pursue his career, and instead enrolled in a general college to major in engineering. After that, he floated between jobs, from fixing cars to working on assembly lines, until he finally saved enough money to enter the college his family originally planned to send him.

At the age of 30, he was one of the older members, and after another ten years of education, he finally came out with the degree he wanted. He later found a job in the Outertech Corporation, and eventually worked his way up to his current assignment, as Chief Engineer of the station on Miasma.

Well we have around 30 npcs to use as canon fodder, I think I mentioned that somewhere. Ah yeah, here it is:

Station Population:

156 registered personnel per twenty-four month shift.

30 registered personnel during shift changeover period.

So we're a part of that 30. I thought it'd help things along if we could make some more gruesome finds.

Well, looking at what we have, it looks like you and the Good Doctor are both in senior roles.

I intend to open the RP with us all in one of the conference rooms, discussing the situation about 24 hours on from the discovery in the canteen, so that'll probably give us a good chance of putting someone in charge.

Character Appearance: Standard Security Equipment and uniform.

Character Employment Role: Secondary Security Officer
Character's Brief History: Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He was raised in a family of five and grew up being the fighter and protector of his younger brothers and two older sisters. Even after he and his family had grown up and moved apart he fealt the need to protect those who couldnt. So he signed up for the IAF and was moved into the field with minimal training as the needs for bodies were growing ever higher. After a year of service he was moved to a far more dangerous territory. The men stationed here were unruly and cared very little for their own lives. On assignment for a raid Enrique was put with a four man team, he was clearing a building with a squadmate while the other two covered the outside. A rebel came from the back weilding a modified rocket launcher, the explosion came from Enriques right while his squadmate called out for assistance. The explosion coupled with sharpnel took out the bottom right of Enriques body, after the house was cleared they checked his vitals and found him to be salvageable. They radioed in for emergency evac. After several months of recooperation Enrique had come to terms with his new limbs and the discharge papers came in. He lost himself for several months but found himself needing to protect others, he found himself working security for a company called OuterTech, on a station known as Miasma.
