The Crystal Tower RP


You are gently awoken from your sleep as the boat comes to a stop. You yawn deeply, taking a deep breath of cool, salty morning air, and stretch pulling yourself up into a sitting position. You slowly rub the sleep from your eyes letting them adjust to the feint early morning light. You can vaguely make out the dark shape of the ferryman, standing over you and your companions. But he is not what everyone is staring at. Before you, jutting out of the small, rocky island, stands a structure that you had only heard about until this moment. A huge crystaline tower rising up into the clouds, it's smooth surface shimmering and glowing with a feint light of a color you cannot quite place your finger on. The hair on the back of your neck begins to stand up and your heart begins to beat faster and faster. You can feel the quiet thrum of energy pulsing, and flowing through the air around this place, and slowly you come to the honest realization that this is the place where you will spend the next ten years of your life.




Welcome! This is my first attempt at running a forum game. My idea is that you are all children discovered to be able to use magic, brought to the Mages Tower most prestigious school for magic outside of perhaps the Grand Imperial College of Magic. The Mages Tower is a mysterious crystal structure that rose out of the ground nearly two hundred years ago in the middle of the great city of Amsusesh causing part of the city to break off and drift out to sea. As the years progressed the structure was investigated and found out to be hollow on the inside and set up like an actual building. There were floors and stair cases, and doors and windows. Mages begin to flock here in an attempt to be the one to discover the secrets of the tower. Well soon a small town sprung up around it, and once it was determined to be safe the mages set up a college to both study the crystal and to teach, and train new mages.

I will be playing most of the teachers and other students at the school but I will not have a character for myself. This is better for me as it will allow me to focus on giving all of your own characters their own storyline and arc. I will also be somewhat busy as I am going to school and I recently got a job, so I will have periods of absence, but I will try to post something at least every couple of days.

Rules


  1. No godmodding, remember you are in fact apprentices. I will let you get more and more powerful as it goes but at least as of now you all should be fairly weak at magic at least.

  2. I admit I do make mistakes, but if you do have a problem with something, please pm me. It will be easier for me to take criticism that way.

  3. Please do not make a character if you are going to drop it in a week or so. For my sake, I don't want to just introduce your character then have them drop

  4. I understand if things come up and you can't keep up with the game, but please tell me if you do. I don't want to be waiting around for a week for you to respond if you aren't going to.



Setting Information
Below is some information on the setting. Not all of it is important to this game in particular and I'll only request that people at least read over the stuff under the Crystal Tower, and How Magic Works sections. The rest is is extra for those of you who are interested.











Character sheet

Name: (Greek names are a good starting point. Just nothing too silly or modern)
Age: (between 10 and 12. I will not accept any older, younger ones could be negotiated though. Remember I plan to do time skips so you will age as it goes)
Appearance: (I would prefer a picture and a short description, but either works. Anime is acceptable but please nothing too crazy, particularly with hair color.)
Background: (Most of you will have been trained by someone for a year or two before being sent to the Tower. Make sure you include who that was for my sake)
Personality:
Skills: (List skills you learned outside of magic up to this point. Also list if you are best at gathering, which will mean your spells are more powerful, shaping, which means you have more control over magic, or sensing magic.)
Element: (One of the four basic elements. You will be slightly more talented at magic manipulating this, but are by no means limited to it. Not incredibly important but I'd like to know)

One extra thing I would like everyone to do once they have made a character is send me a message saying what you would like to get out of the game or what you are most excited for. This helps me make sure I give everyone what they want. It's my job as the gm to make sure everyone has fun and often times I assume someone is looking to get one thing out of a game and they actually want something completely different. This would just help me avoid that.

Unfortunately though, for my sanity and the quality of the game as a whole I may have to limit the number of players I can accept (Probably no more than 6). I will not be deciding who gets in on a first come first serve basis, as I feel this would promote putting less thought into your characters, rather once I feel I have most of the characters in, I will then pick the ones I feel are the best. I appreciate anyone who takes the time to create a character though, and if you don't get in on the first round I will still keep you in mind if someone drops out or something.

Will be continuously updating info on the setting. Feel free to pm me or post in the OOC if you want to discuss character ideas or have any questions about anything I posted. I really look forward to seeing everyone's characters!

Background: Was trained from the age of 10 in his abilities by a powerful wizard though when the wizard died he didn't know what to do and when he was discovered in the wild among the beaches wanting to be close to the water he was sent off to the school

Personality:fun, energetic, serious with studies, easy going outside of classes, enjoys using magic for fun as well as to help people

Skills: Transformation: Can change the element into other version's of it (snow, ice, vapor, etc etc)
Rain maker: (Can cause it to rain even on a sunny day)
Water bender (Can bend even the smallest for of water to his will, the dew on a flower in the morning for instance)

I think I'll be keeping an eye on this. No doubt the site problems threw a wrench into the works, but if most of the people that expressed their enthusiasm in the interest check follow through, there should be a good cast for this.

For the background it doesn't have to be a specific wizard. You don't even need to name one if you don't care if he appears in the main game. More just looking for what you did before you were sent off to the tower.

Appearance:

Background: Being alone since birth Thanos learnt how to live on the streets. He learnt how to steal using his magic and one day stole from the wrong person. Sensing his potential to be a dark wizard he didn't punish the boy but decided to take him in and train him to use his magic. This was at the age of 9. As his master trained him he has been sent to The Crystal Tower to help gain any information and of course, train even more.

Personality: Following his master Thanos is often kept to himself and not looking for conversations. Training every second of the day to be the most powerful mage Thanos will often stay up at nights training. He is very secretive, has a keen eye for information and often with others, leaves his hands in his pockets and looks cool.

Skills:

  • Keen Eye – Has the ability to see when information is being revealed, he often eavesdrops or can get "personal" to get what he wants.

  • Magic – Very very skilled at shaping and still an adept at gathering. Sensing is what he thrives to work on..

  • Enchanting – He has become quite the enchanter and often uses these skills to help him anywhere possible.



Element: Air but can somewhat sense space. (If it goes this far, i was hoping it would turn into Space Magic, the ability to move through space. Best spy :) )

Aleric’s hair comes off as short and often messy. It’s has the color of soft sandy blond as his skin tone is light due to the amount of time he spent indoors. He prefers clothing of subtle colors and those made out of loose yet light fabrics. Thin scarves would be an occasional wear as well.

Background: Aleric originated from a small town that has a large name that he could never pronounce properly. He came from a small family of low-income, and his very first memory he could remember was looking outside of a broken window of his home and the drips of a leaking roof.

His mother would often tell him that he was the quietest of the three children; the silent one, as a toddler, that would explore every nook and cranny of the house while his parents would fretfully search for him. One time, they found him almost crawling out the window before they hurriedly pulled him away and shut it close. Throughout his life, he still has an instinct to wander about, and it wouldn’t be unusual to see him wandering at the very edge of town or in between the shops and their alleyways.

It wasn’t until the age of seven when he began noticing the strange phenomena surrounding him on occasion. Small sparkles of lights when he couldn’t see, patches of scorched grass when he’s restless, and strange sensations that would sometimes tingle against his skin. His first instinct wasn’t one of fear, but of curiosity. He ran to the nearest person – which happens to be the town’s only librarian - and asked “What’s this?” before setting of a small amount of sparks onto a stick with just his hands.

He was eight years old when he was taken in as a student by the librarian. Amelia Opus was her name, and she was the only witch in town while being a librarian was a small occupation of hers. However, she has no interest in the actual conduct of magic itself, but only of the research. The library itself turned out to be historic as centuries of information are hidden within its basement. For two years, he had spent his days in the library, rummaging through books and scrolls to provide the necessary information for his teacher.

Gathering, shaping, and sensing – the central concept of magic was taught to him and nothing else. No magic has ever been taught or conducted except for the basics of controlling his powers and aiding research with the use of his sensing ability that was used to detect enchanted documents. However, he was not dissatisfied. Ms. Opus would answer all his questions about magic to the best of her abilities, but when it comes to cities and lands outside of town, she would clammed up and point at the shelves. With books as his only source of lessons, he would skim through the pages, staring at the pictures of lands and cities outside of his town.

One day, he ran up to Ms. Opus, holding a book wide open before her eyes.

“Ms. Opus,” he said, pointing at the picture. A magnificent structure of glass-like crystals reaching for the sky filled the pages. “What is this?”

“That…” Slowly, she glanced at the picture and ruffled his hair. “… is the place you will soon visit.”

He would be 10 years old when he would finally be sent off to see the Crystal Tower.

Personality: A quiet boy, Aleric prefers the background rather than the spotlight. In group situations, he becomes a wallflower, keeping mostly to himself; however, he thrives in one-on-one as he become more personal and friendly. His demeanor is calm and his attitude is lax, but he has a thirst for adventure and a curiosity that has yet to be quenched. Whether alone or with friends, he would silently seek thrills at every opportunity or, at least, until his questions are answered. It isn’t uncommon for him to relentlessly stalk someone or ask so many questions that would almost seem like an interrogation. He has no use of most of the information he gathers, but he still seeks it just for the sake of knowing.

He is naïve in how the world works, and gives trust out too easily. An advocate for peace yet a philosopher at heart, it’s hard for him to keep still as he views the world as a place that has yet to be explored.

Skills:

  • Information Gathering – Able to gather knowledge and facts from documentations and other written resources. Other methods of collecting data is through eavesdropping or just relentlessly hounding someone for the answers in not-so-subtle ways.

  • Magic Sensing – Aleric is more skilled in this than gathering or shaping. However, he can’t tell where the magic is coming from unless it’s right in front of him. Usually uses it to tell if an object (mostly books) has been enchanted.

  • Flute Playing – Has been playing the flute since the age of 7. He had always appreciated the sounds of flutes and pipes.

Appearance: (Annoyingly, all the pictures i can find that show off what sort of look i want for her are either too old or have snake legs. here is the closest thing i could find to a headshot i liked)
Background: The great desert to the south is long, vast, and dusty place. If you tracked a course through it's constant maze of neverending dunes for decades of your life, you might be so lucky to see another person, and you'd kill him and mount him on the floor of your tent just for the novelty value. But life finds a way of surviving in even the most miserable places on the disc, and even thriving. The men and women of the al-Juzjani collective have lived in the desert for hundreds if not thousands of years, and they've become exceedingly good at it. Little Jasveer was born on a quiet spring night under a waxing gibbous when the cacti were in bloom. Not a particularly auspicious date, and she was not a particularly auspicious birth. As a young girl she would watch her father, a water mage by the name of Ibn Sina, trace his runes over the sand, watch his eyes glaze over with the rush of what he called "the Aethir" as around him the sand grew darker and clumped in mud patches, bringing with it the lifesaving gift of water. Jasveer was always annoyed she couldn't lift water as efficiently as her father did. All her attempts merely resulted in metals and stones, practically useless ugly rocks to her, but her father liked it when she did it, and she kept it up to keep him happy most of all.

At the age of eight, Jasveer burnt herself when a speck of white-hot pig iron landed on her forehead while she was practicing a ritual. It broke her concentration, and she ended up, after all was said and done, with an ugly welt on her forehead. She tries to brush it off as nothing, downplaying the consequences, but the fact remains that even at the age of eleven, she simply isn't as good at shaping magic as when she was eight. These days, practically all her magic is done with a runic system of circles within circles which does most of the shaping in a way she feels comfortable with. It's cumbersome, and a pain to do in exams and such, but it works pretty efficiently for her, and that's all that matters.

Personality: Jasveer is the quiet sort, content to sit and make cat's cradles with her hands for hours. She hunches over a lot, and acts defensive if you try to ask what she's so focused on. Most of her free times is spent cooped up inside, away from the sun or any other celestial body, working on god-knows-what in the confines of her room. She rarely ventures out, and when she does, it's with a crooked shovel and a sack packed heaving with dirt.

Skills:
- Magic. Jasveer is competent at sensing magic, absolutely awful at shaping magic, but can gather it pretty efficiently.

- Falconry. Jasveer is an amateur falconrist (Falconist? Falconatrist?), capable of directing and taking care of a trained falcon. She's not afraid of other predatorial animals as much as her peers. That doesn't mean she can train a falcon from birth or anything like that.

- Mechanisms. Jasveer has a working knowledge of mechanisms, and knows how to build and shape metals, how a cog works, how to build machinery
Element: Earth (Not just because its the only one available, i wanted Earth from the start. Earth is best magic.)

A young man of Indian descent. Raghu is fairly lean. He's got long arms and legs, deep black marbles of eyes, and a shock of black hair. It's rare not to see either a smile on his face or a gleam in his eye. Brightly colored clothing is his preference, which is prevalent among his culture.
Background:

Personality:
Raghu is a generally outgoing kid. Very representative of his culture, Raghu loves experiencing new things and sharing what he has with others. Though very intelligent, he has a reckless streak to him, and doesn't mind a bit of good, hard fun now and again. Theatricality, both in language and in action, is second nature to him, and he loves to show off—particularly when it comes to his unique, versatile Breath magic. The one thing he doesn't show off are the lacrima crystals that contain the aether that he uses rather than gathering it himself. These, he's very jealous of, though he's not above begging others to help recharge them if they run low. While being above others is something he's used to, his companionable nature prevents him from becoming egotistical, so the remainder of this quality manifests as leadership.
Skills:
Shaping is Raghu's specialty. This is explained in his backstory. In exchange for being very good at controlling and manipulating his Breath magic, he's so bad at Gathering it that he uses an entirely different system.
Intelligence is a blessing to Raghu. He's smart, quick to learn from his mistakes and about others by observing. He's also a decent scholar for his age.
Language is a natural gift for him. Raghu's vocabulary is very surprising for his age, and he's able to utilize his words well to influence the world around him.

Name: Aella Elektra
Age:11
Appearance: Aella obviously shorter for her as a child. Underneath the hood she wears her hair dark blonde almost brown hair in a pony tail or a bun, and her gray colored eyes are the same color as storm clouds, she seems to stare through people not at them.
Background: She was born in a slum and abandoned. She never knew who her parents were but she was raised by a kindly old lady who raised her until she was about five, then she died leaving the child alone. So along with some of the other orphans of the slum they stole things to survive and she became a great pick pocket. By ten years old however she picked the wrong mark and tried to steal from a wizard. When he was about to grab her and turn her into the guards he sensed something in her, so he gave her the choice of come with him or be sent to the guards, she went with him.

The wizard taught her all he could for a year, but he realized she needed something more stable for her and a environment that was away from the slums, so he sent a letter ahead and had her sent to the tower for training.

Personality:Aella seems to be so quiet even her foot steps seem to have no sound, which often scares people when she does talk because they don't hear her coming, she is kind to people who are less fortunate and seems to go out of her way to help anyone who is having a bad time, she tries not to form attachments something that is left over from her life in the streets and being abandoned the last person she formed an attachment with was her master who she feels abandoned her.

Skills: Pickpocket: Aella is a skilled pick pocket, she used to be able to make enough money to eat for a week, after just a night of thieving, but she is also a slight kleptomaniac and will steal things from people on impulse.

Blending In: A skill picked up in the slums where she grew up. She would have to blend in and look like she belonged there or the guards might get suspicious.

Shaping: She seems to be good at shaping, using her wind magic to be used as a tool instead of a weapon.

Name: Apollo

Age: 12

Appearance: Is a young man with bright red hair, soft blue eyes and mischievous grin. He wears a gray cloak with runes on the back often seen with the hood up. He stand around 5 foot, 5 inches and is always on the look out for a good time. His constant brawls have left him with a few scars, even one on his hand that seems to be burned in like a brand more than a scar.

Background: Before being sent to the tower Apollo was a thief, growing up with a whore mom, he needed food and money so he stole, it was a honest life and he never hurt anyone. Apollo even named himself as his mother was content to let him die in the street. He often dealt with bullies and grown ups trying to hit because he was a thief and whore's son, so he learn how to take a punch and how to fight back. Until one day he stole from the wrong (Or perhaps the right) person. A wizard name Stahl who just come to town had snagged his arm when Apollo had attempted to pick the lock on his door. The young thief froze in fear as the mage stared down at him, suddenly the wizard broke in to laughter and told him that he sensed the gift of magic within him and began to train Apollo in how to use that gift. Now after two years of study Apollo has been sent off to the tower to continue his training making his adoptive father Stahl very happy. Stahl taught boy much and sensed that he could be a great wizard with the right teachers and so Apollo has risen to the task of mastering his power.

Personality: Apollo is kind and very dedicated to those he calls friends as he has few and loves to learn even teaching himself how to read with books he "borrowed". Apollo is very much a tough guy trying stick up for other and do what's right unless theft is involved, he's got a real weakness for that, Stahl called him a kleptomaniac. Apollo has always defended himself and his lack of friends makes it hard for him to develop attachment but he tries because his Stahl would want him to.

Skills:

Shaping- Apollo can actually shape well enough to make a temporary weapon out of fire though he must have at least a day or two to prepare even then he can only use for a little under a hour. After creating weapon he also needs at least two days of rest or more.

Lock picking- Apollo did steal but he always did by removing items from peoples home or shops while they were away. He is very quick precise with a lock pick have very steady hands.

Taking a hit- Due to past brawls Apollo has learn how to take the pain thus allowing him to push his limits and tolerate pain when he should be on the ground.

Not giving in- Apollo has fought before and knows how to fight back with a weapon or his fists if need be generally he only does this to defend himself or others.

Element: Fire
