GourmetItalia said That's very unfortunate to hear about Turkey and though I can't verify everything, the situation in Turkey does sound intolerable. I've certainly read about protests, conflicts with the PKK, the notorious hacker population, and other news, but ... on a side note, Turkey has come a long way since their early - mid 20th century Modernization efforts. It's good to know that the Turkish Armed Forces, Infrastructure, Educational Institutions, and Police Brigades are several shades better than their Southern Neighbors with the possible exception of Iran. Still, I don't know enough about your country to verify Turkey's strengths as a country. It does seem like there's much work to be done to improve the existing infrastructure.

Most of the things that would allow for long-term investments were put down for rather obnoxious reasons. There was a plane designer who got support from AtatΓΌrk but got put down by Δ°nΓΆnΓΌ after AtatΓΌrk's death, and had to use his own financial investments to build planes. He was banned from testing planes, even in his own private property. There were village institutes to educate the village people to enhance socio-cultural progress. It was shut down because of 'promoting Communism' by a Prime Minister who used Islam to get votes while banging the wives of his subordinates. In actuality, it was shut down because it was a thorn in the landlords' side as they didn't want educated people who could stop working for them (Guess what? The Prime Minister was a landlord too!). Now the country's completely dependent on other countries, with ignorant people who don't even know the basics of the religion they fervently defend. It's like Medieval times.

As a whole, the country's turned down so many opportunities it's no surprise that it's a cesspool, a swamp waiting to get dried out.

Hola! Skulls put me on to this site and ya'll's Altaea roleplay. I am the magnificent 7 from Gateway. I played one of Mr. D's games some year or so ago. All of you look liked skilled and fun writers. Without further ado, my character;

A bad peace is worse than a good war.
When I go more than ten miles out of the city, the love and loyalty of friends comes to an end.
All citizens must place the common good before the private good.

Name: Johannes Dobek

Age: Early twenties

Race: Human

Nationality: Valanian

Allegiance: Village of Casimir

Appearance: Johann stands at 5'11. His broad shoulders belie his starved frame. His thick musculature isl taut and ropy from lack of nutrition, giving him a lean and hungry look. Thick sandy brown hair is shorn close to his scalp. A week's worth of rough, unkempt beard covers his face. A face soft with youth, but starting to show wear from a life of adversity. His hazel eyes, splashed with gold, peer down a strong, hawk-like nose. Johannes' hands are rough and calloused from a lifetime of labor.

A single green stud, symbolizing the Valanian Auxiliary Corps, hangs in his left ear. Johann wears a rough leather jerkin, studded with metal plates, and steel shod leather boots. His breeches are thick canvas. Leather gloves with metal back plates cover his hands.

Profession: Blacksmith, Auxilliary Soldier

Biography: Johannes Dobek was born the fifth child and third son of a carpenter in Casimir Village. He was raised by his mother and older sisters. They would often gather in the house and sing as they worked. Johann, when not terrorizing the pets and running amok, would sit and listen for hours.

At the age of ten Johann began to help in his father's woodshop. While his father had no intention of making the boy a master carpenter, Johann picked up more than enough in those years to apprentice in any village. Johann often ran errands to the blacksmith, Mateu, for anything more complicated to make than nails. It was here that Johannes first met Maria.

Maria was ten and Johann eleven when they first met. He found the girl to be annoying when happy and patronizing upset. He did not like her. Still, every time Johann would visit the shop to have a saw repaired or pick up a bracket, Maria was never far away. Her bright gaze, beneath dark curls, would follow his every move.

As the years wore on Johann's mother and father would find more excuses to send him to Mateu's shop. It wasn't too long before Johann began to notice Maria with a very different feeling than annoyance. If she were fetching water, he would contrive to carry it for her. If she were not in the shop, he would question her amused father.

At the age of fifteen Johann was apprenticed to Mateu and moved into his shop Though he always dined with the family. Johann spent most of his hours in the forge or drafting designs at the small desk near his cot. Mateu often commented that had Johann been better born he should have gone to university. Johann would laugh and say that if he had been better born he would not have met Maria.

Maria often found excuses to enter the shop. Sometimes just watching as Johann worked the bellows or hammered a piece into shape. He never noticed, his focus was so great as to exclude all else.

As taxation became an inexorably heavier burden tradesman in Casimir began to take out loans, hoping to keep their livelihoods afloat. It came to a point where most had to choose between paying the debtors or the tax collectors. And then a time came when they could pay neither.

During that time Johann joined the Valanian Auxiliary Corps, doing a duty shift one week out of three. Mostly they fought wolves or the occasional bandits. They escorted drunks home and put out fires. But the Emperor's banner flies on the horizon, signalling the return of the tax collectors.

Notable skills/abilities: Smithing, singing, carpentry, drafting

Greetings 7achary and welcome! Can't tell you how surprised I am to see you and that I remember your face back in Mr. D's 2011 story. I wanted to offer my official nod in your direction and a heartfelt thank you to Skulls for the invitation. I don't know how much you remember about the Prince, but I was working behind the scenes as his co-GM, but never got around to posting characters or story continuing material.

I like Johannes and I think he would make an excellent addition to the story, however, I need you to change his involvement with the militia to the Valanian Auxiliary Corps. There are no town militias given that Valania is partially occupied by Sarife and partially under Lord Regent and Sovereign Conqvist's domain. Everything else looks quite solid so …

Johannes is accepted!

In other matters, would you happen to be interested in revisiting your previous characters, Gideon Ce'dareuax or Derfel "Wormtongue" Gerbekson to Age of Revolution? I'm sure we can work something out for his initial sheet so that he's given justice as a character!

@ Peik – That doesn't sound reassuring or acceptable, progress related. Education is a huge reward if aggressively and properly pursued. I can't verify all claims, but you seem to know a great deal more than I so on my end, it sounds very unfortunate to hear about what seems to be stagnation in reliable specialists within many Turkish nationals. The one mark of progress within a nation stems from the educated work force and the country's own self sufficient qualities. If a nation's own local citizens are filling the work force and conducting the majority of the nation's specialized fields, that goes a long ways, both in costs and in maintaining sustainable infrastructure. I can only hope that Turkey's future generations will continually improve the country's economic, educational, and infrastructural foundations.

I would like to ask, though. What good and meritable achievements have the Turks yielded within the past 40 or 50 years?

Edit: Long post and time skip in the works so keep your eyes peeled for more Altaea!

For sure. I can edit that in.

Perhaps Gideon. He was a true blackguard, a robber knight. You already have a player with a cavalry, though. As long as I am not stepping on any toes; I would love to.

Derfel was an attempt to jostle the politicking with a more economic viewpoint. I can possibly bring him in.

I'm practicing the writing styles of Roger Zelazny and Gene Wolfe currently. Is it alright if I write from the first person view? I understand completely if you'd rather I not.

I have no problems with another cavalry specialist and would be delighted if you included either Gideon or Derfel. I think either character would add a new perspective to the politics in and around Voltas, but you are free to insert material regarding the happenings within urban cities surrounding Voltas.

Regarding writing styles, I don't mind a first person view, so long as it's confined to journal entries, otherwise; for now, I'd like to request if you could keep everything in third person. I do appreciate the request though and in the future, there might be possibilities for further perspective explorations so first person posts are not entirely out of the picture!

Despite all the bad stuff going on, we've produced a lot of incredibly good literature and poetry in my opinion. Also, some excellent historians. Though we've been running short on those for the last 20-30 years. Some good music, too. But only some.

Haven't posted in a while so a reasonable amount of OOC backlog xD

Hello 7achary! Awesome looking character and I hope that some point in the future there is interaction between him and my character Corisande, a blacksmith apprentice, since they would certainly get on - they have their similarities and such. Also you mentioned Roger Zelazny so I'm assuming you like his works? I have to admit I've only read the Chronicles of Amber (First five) and the Lord of Light but he is an amazing writer.

Looking forward to the post and time skip!

Wikipedia says it's the Redwing, but it also says citation needed. I don't think we have a national bird, tbh.

Name:
Gideon Ce'dareaux

Age:
35

Race:
Human

Nationality:
Valanian/Rydar

Allegiance:
Valania/Conqvist

Appearance:
Gideon stands above most men at a towering 6'4, and a physique to match. His brown hair, gray at the temples, is cropped short over his dark green, brooding eyes. His armor is a dull bronze with steel trimming, the bronze has been carefully crafted to look like the scales of a great serpent. The helm, of the same bronze material, has an undulating serpent as it's crest. When at court Gideon wears a great coppery coat which is held closed with black silken rope over a white shirt, the trim of this coat is black as well as his leggings and riding boots.
Personality:
Gideon holds honor above all things. His duty as a lord is to be held to a higher standard than anyone else. This honor is not a light burden, and it has turned him into a methodical man. At war he is able to seemingly make snap decisions that leave others flabbergasted. His sense of self and purpose is daunting. It is what has enabled him to accomplish so much. He cares for each of his men individually and sees their failures as his own.

However, the very things that make him an excellent field commander do not transfer into politics so well. Gideon's temper is well known, as are his uncompromising opinions.

Goals and aspirations:
Having accomplished his youthful goal of becoming a ranked field commander, Gideon never felt content with his lands and duties. With the tyranny of the Sarifen emperor Gideon now wishes to drive the Sarifen from Valania and conquer their lands in turn.
Gideon’s overarching goal is to raise his son as an honorable and just man.

Fears:
Gideon once feared the death of his predecessor and uncle, Roland. Now that he is passed and Gideon has become the head of his house and a lord in his own right, he fears the death of his son. Or even worse that he should fail in his duties as a father and release into the realm another self absorbed and incompetent lordling.

Likes:
War. Battle. His son. While a soldier's man in his youth, a womanizer and drunkard, Gideon struggles to set a better example for his son.

Dislikes:
Politics. Petty squabbling and back biting. There is nothing that makes Gideon's temper flare more than the nobility halting progress for their own selfish aims. As a young man Gideon was often asked to leave court over matters of state. The Regent. The gypsy bastard gives favors to his undeserving kin, making enemies among the Rydar nobles. Fool.

Notable skills/abilities:
Experienced cavalry officer and strategist.

Equipment:
Gideon's blade, Serpentbreath, is a large and ornate falchion. Somewhere between a sword and an axe it is mainly used in mounted forms, such as Arc of the Moon, Woodsman Stripping the Bark, and Strike the Spark. The hilt is the neck and head of a great serpent while the folds of steel in the blade are intricately formed into curving flames. His broad-headed lance, which is two feet taller than himself, is barbed. He has two mounts, one for heavy cavalry and one for light. Stoic, his large bay gelding, and Bemossed his sable thoroughbred from Sarife.

Biography:
Gideon Ce'dareaux, was an honorable young man from a Rydar family known for it's political scandals and shady business practices. Gideon is the current head of the Ce'dareaux’s of Redstone Keep.

Gideon is a military man, he spent every moment as a child at Redstone Keep learning the blade and lance. Poetry and it’s like held no interest for him, what need is there to woo a peasant girl? However, poetry and philosophy were made into a part of studies just as business and politics. With a good head for numbers it was expected that he get involved in the family business of trade and transport.

For a few months at the age of fifteen he was given charge over a caravan on it's way to the capitol. Everything went as expected when an arrow was shot from the foliage on the side of the road, then another and another. The family seneschal, who was mentoring him at the time, suggested a few guards take Lord Gideon and escape leaving the others behind. Gideon, however, was not going to turn tail and run. His honor would not allow him to leave behind his people to the dastardly machinations of these common brigands. When his seneschal reminded him that often generals were given to flight in the face of overwhelming force, Gideon replied with a smile that a few arrows were hardly overwhelming force. Gideon ordered the various wagons around the main party. He then took almost the entire mounted guard and made as if it to escape. When the brigands rose from the cover of the forest, almost slavering over their waiting prey, Gideon and his mounted contingent rode from the opposite side of the road with a well timed flanking maneuver. He and the guardsman killed most, leaving a few for the prisons of Voltas.

Upon arriving at the capitol his uncle, who was in Voltas to fulfill his duties to the Crown and Regent, made a great show of seeing his nephew return in public. In private Roland was furious. The brigands, who were executed immediately upon entering the city, were paid for by the Ce'dareaux family. The materials in the caravan were going to a rival and were not meant to reach him. While Gideon knelt, head bowed, taking his uncle's harsh words in stoic silence Roland came to a realization. The next day Gideon was given to the military academy to learn tactics and war.

For many years Gideon excelled at the AcadΓ©mie de Guerre. He was the star of his military tutor's and always learned from his mistakes. The honors he received at the academy were numerous and prestigious, though only worn on parade. After four years of the academics of battle Gideon was given twenty cavalry and a seat at the Lord-General's war table.

For sixteen years he has acted as the the Lance of Rydar, always at the front lines and never a crippling defeat. Now, at the age of thirty-five, Gideon is considered the face of the Rydar contingent in Valania.

Gerard, Gideon’s fourteen year old son, has recently come of age to be squired. While Gideon realizes that the squiring of an heir is usually a political decision, he is more inclined to select a man he respects and trusts as his son’s master. Though his nagging wife, Conqvist's niece, suggests a compromise, it is unlikely Gideon will budge.

The Ce'dareaux crest is a serpent on a tawny field with an argent bend. Gideon personal crest has the serpent wrapped around a lance.

So, apparently no double posting is a thing. I spent a great deal of time an effort on Johann's post and then proceeded to lose it. I'm not quite over it yet, so I don't know when I will post for him. It will probably involve drugs or alcohol, and feelings. So there's that.

Ahhhh … sorry to hear about that 7achary; I know how it feels and its rough regardless of how well or shoddy you felt about the piece. The good news stems from the fact that we can learn to not repeat this horrible occurrence and my best advice involves using a word processor before posting. I've had several occassions where the browser closed and I could've lost several well written posts, but didn't because they were still backed up on my word processor; in fact, I actually almost lost my last post me accidently closing the browser inbetween closing other tabs. No problem, though; had my post backed up on a word document and afterwards, the fiasco just took another minute of copy and pasting. Practice the word processor protocol and you too can give upstart browsers the middle finger!

In other, content related issues, I think that as long as you have a general idea regarding what you last wrote; you can probably write something even better. I don't know if your last post involving drugs and alcohol were serious or sarcasmic, but I would not recommend drug or alcohol abuse to escape what's already been done. Writer up, take what you remember, and make your other piece better! If you need to collaborate, don't hesitate to shoot me a message and we'll see if we can't cook up an even spicier storm ;)
