Any room for a First Mate/second in command?

EDIT: I'm thinking an older, grizzled type man who is inexplicably adamant that this seventeen year old girl's word is law.

Name: Jacqueline Hammer (Usually just goes by Jack, will begrudgingly tolerate Jackie)

Age: 28

Gender: Female

Appearance: Before conversion

Her MEC suit (obviously not her in that, just a suit ref)

And for contrast, a modern MEC suit

Personality: Jacqueline is a loud individual who completely lacks a poker face. She doesn't have the best education, but has learned some basic math and engineering just as a necessity due to her modified body. She's generally fairly friendly, and unfortunately for those around her she doesn't have much sense of personal space.

Her behavior in the crew would never have been permitted in her old military company—she doesn't seem to really respect the captain all that much, likely due to her age. She'll follow orders and such, but she'll listen to her own experience first and foremost. This has caused some disagreements in the past, especially in regards to the use of lethal force in some situations. Jack is a soldier and will neutralize a target if she feels it's the most prudent course of action, something that has caused a lot of tension with the captain at times. However, the fact that she doesn't do this frequently but only in cases where it honestly was the most sensible course of action has meant that the resulting arguments usually aren't TOO bad.

Skills: Jack is someone you want on your side in a fight. A capable soldier even before her conversion, her augmentations have left her capable of fairly easily punching through stone walls. She's a decent shot with a gun, as stabilizers in her suit generally assist her aim, but her real advantage in that regard is that she can carry weapons simply too large for anyone else, which while helpful in a firefight is also fantastic as an intimidation technique. Her mass comes with some tradeoffs though, namely that she's an easy target in a firefight and sometimes has a hard time fitting through doors. She also weighs as much as a mid-sized car. Her suit offers numerous other tools and devices, one of the more notable ones being a suite of features that allows her to seal the suit and survive in a vacuum. Due to the air scrubbers, she would die of thirst or hunger before running out of air. Jump jets also allow her to move around in zero gravity, as well as jump up and down from high platforms in regular gravity.

Equipment: Her Mech suit, which has really seen better days and currently has a lot of improvised repairs. It's also an older model, if she had one of the more modern ones she would in theory be much stronger. She also has an old chaingun that's been slightly modified for her suit to be able to hold, though she doesn't use it too much. Since it relies on ballistics, many modern shields simply deflect it, though the rapid fire means it can be good for overworking cheaper shields and causing them to burn out.

Brief Backstory: Jacqueline joined a military company nearly as soon as she came of age. She proved to be a capable warrior, and when the cost of MEC suits came within reach of her unit, she was one of the ones who chose to undergo the amputation and augmentation process to become able to use them. Sadly, only a couple of years later legislation was passed that made it illegal for MEC troopers to be employed by private military units. As a result, Jack and the other MEC troopers were relieved of duty.
Not wanting to join an official military company but possessing a specialized skillset, she had few options other than searching out an employer willing to operate outside the law. She found such a person in Captain Yuriko. Yuriko supplies her with chances to make a living, and Jack supplies her captain with an extremely effective tool for intimidation, as well as all the loot-hauling power of a forklift.

Position in Crew: Heavy lifter / front-line combatant. She often hangs out in the mechanic's bay, since her ability to lift massively heavy engines comes in useful for the crew there. Also, the roof is high enough that she doesn't have to crouch. In less peaceful times, she's often the first one into the breach, her massive frame providing cover for her allies.

Name: Malachi Black
Age: 42
Gender: Male
Appearance:

Dresses pretty simply most of the time, jeans and a gray button down shirt. Has a heavy long coat he likes to wear over top, which helps conceal the equipment he usually has hanging from his hip or under his arm. Often wears his graying hair in a little bun on top of his head, underneath his hat, an older styled officer's cap in purple.
Personality: Genial and gregarious, in a quiet sort of way. Smokes and drinks heavily, and enjoys sharing these habits with whoever happens to be nearby. Intensely loyal and obedient, takes chain of command seriously.
Skills: A fairly proficient fighter in most modes of combat. Sort of "jack of all trades, master of none" in that regard. Can act with a commanding presence that the captain tends to lack.
Equipment: Sting '25. A hilariously outdated military grade blaster pistol. Retractable vibro-blade.
Gravity Masher: Manipulates gravity at a localized level. Can lift things, make things heavier, make things "fall sideways" etc.

Brief Backstory: Was born and raised in a small, out of the way military dictatorship. When he was fifteen he was conscripted into their army, but he was fortunate enough to make powerful friends early on, and was bumped up to the officer class. No matter what position he held, however, he was never cut out for that life. He was barely twenty years old when he had a psychotic break and joined the open rebellion against the police state. A good portion of the troops who were under him joined as well, inspired by him, and with their help the war quickly ground to a crushing end, both sides obliterated beyond recognition. In the end, both rebels and loyalists fled their wasted home planet. Some sought citizenship elsewhere, but many military deserters turned to piracy.
Malachi served on many ships and crews in the twenty years since, but when The Illustrious Yuriko(a name Black will say without a hint of sarcasm) found him, he was a destitute drunk. He joined her crew out of a sad desperation, but she saw something worthwhile in him.
Position in Crew: First Mate

@RainehDaze: You mentioned maybe wanting to change ideas privately, so I'll wait until you're certain.

@Apollosarcher: So he's definitely more of a scout as it stands then an assassin?

@j8cob: Looking forward to it!

@Primal Conundrum: I'm sorry, but, um... well, for one thing, I think that making it so mecha require the pilot to amputate their limbs is both far too dark and doesn't really make much in the way of sense. Also, clashing with Yuriko's viewpoints is all well and good, but actively killing people when it's not in self-defense when they're actively posing a threat is a good way to get kicked off of the crew as close to the nearest UEGSC enforcement office as possible.

@Gisk: I'll get my ruling up when he's finished.

Okay, that works out. Accepted.

Also, on the list, exclamation points on either side of your screenname indicates that you are the current "episode GM".

Just going to address these point by point, and if you still disagree after then that's fine, just want to clarify some things is all in case it improves your opinion.

In regards to amputation, she's basically a big cyborg really, if you'd rather think of it that way. The only reason that it's not an exo-suit is that it's larger in frame, but not so large that a human could sit inside it like an anime mecha. The arms and legs are located in a sort of middle distance, and doing it this way allows her to have direct biological control over the suit like it was her own body. Really, she's just a big cyborg. The only time where she'd even be seen outside the suit is if she was transferring to a new suit, and even then that would probably be a behind the scenes thing since I don't really want to dwell on amputation either.

I mean heck, Cyborg from Teen Titans has lost most of his body, but that's not dwelled on. Everyone considers his machine parts to just be a normal part of who he is. That's kinda what I'd be going for.

As far as killing people, I don't mean that she does so casually, but like if there's an enemy they've run into a few times who keeps coming back to be a threat, she'll try to put him down, or if there's someone that she honestly believes there is no other way to stop being a threat. She doesn't do so casually, and I'm kinda hoping that the arguments about it with the captain will make Jack even more reluctant to use lethal force, over time. She doesn't kill for fun or anything, only when she feels that it's absolutely necessary. The only thing that I meant is that she might feel it's absolutely necessary in cases where the captain might not. They would still be fairly extreme cases to go that far, however.

If you still feel that she's too much of a bad fit, I'll respect that and withdraw.

My issue with the first point is that it still doesn't make so much sense? I could understand prosthetics if there was an accident or something, but I'm not seeing a reason for people to make a technology that requires amputating the operator's limbs. Also it's still kind of dark for this even if I don't intend every plot to be comedy-focused and for there to be serious plotlines.

As for the second point, um, while there can certainly be character development and arguments, I'm not so sure this RP is the best place for regular morality debates? ^^; Again, maybe in one of the more serious plots later on, but not as a regular thing.

I have finally decided to make a medical officer. Who may or may not also be a robot. But we'll see how that turns out.

@Rin: Looking forward to it!

@TheBigJon: As long as there's open spots in the crew, there's room.

As for when the OOC is going to be up, probably the weekend?

Whee~

  • Name: HAMU (Humanoid Automated Medical Unit)

  • Age: 5. She's already an outdated model, though.

  • Gender: Designed to appear female, at least.

  • Appearance: In case the joints hadn't tipped you off, she is a robot.

  • Personality: Cheerful and pleasant, having been programmed to have a pleasant bedside manner. Really, that would be about it were it not for the fact that Captain Iwakawa got her for so cheap because not only was she an outdated model, but she's kind of buggy. She's a bit more free-willed and curious than she's really supposed to be, for one thing, and has been known to wander off in the middle of doing something for no real reason. She also seems to take the three laws as more of a suggestion than ironclad rules, and whilst she won't actually kill anyone, she's not exactly adverse to slapstick violence if the situation calls for it.

  • Skills: HAMU is programmed with a vast archive of medical knowledge and procedures; whilst this information is mostly centered around humans she is still knowledgable enough to treat several non-human lifeforms too. As a machine, she is possessed of physical strength above that of mere humans, and she does not tire or get exhausted. She still needs to charge every so often, but her battery life is rather decent.

  • Equipment: Stored in HAMU's chest are a variety of built-in tools for examination and diagnosis, and the medical section of the ship is stocked with various basic medical supplies for treating common ailments. If something more exotic comes up, however, the crew will need to pick up more specific supplies in order to treat it.

  • Brief Backstory: Merely one of a series of medical robots designed to look humanoid so as to make their patients feel more at ease, this particular model was picked up by Captain Iwakawa not that long ago. Due to being an outdated model, she even got her for rather cheap. Much to the captain's dismay, however, not only is HAMU not anatomically correct but her chest is hard plastic.

  • Position in Crew: Medical Officer

Edit: It could be like the second in command but for gunners, leaving Mathew in the lead so I don't step on any toes.
