Jacie slammed the door behind her, she giggled, and skipped to the kitchen as she tried to scream with excitement. Her dream had come true, she was finally accepted into a college, and her life was slowly falling into piece perfectly. The pink hair female showed her parents the acceptation letter, they both were happy for their daughter, they knew that she worked hard for this.

"I'm going upstairs, and call my friends." Jacie smiled before she ran upstairs to her bedroom. She shut the door behind her, she pulled her cell phone out of her pocket, and started to call one of her best friends. As she talked to her friend, Jacie pulled out a suitcase from underneath her bed, she thought she heard something shake, so she leaned down, and looked underneath the bed when she saw a small box.

She grabbed the box and smiled when she realized that it was the box that she shoved all of her stuff from her childhood in; she opened it, and pulled out the journal she used to write in everyday. Jacie started to flip through the pages, she giggled as she started to read some of the pages, her imagination hasn't changed much; she still believed in fairies and mermaids. When the older female flipped to the back, a piece of paper fell out, and when she picked it up, it was a drawing of a large castle.

"Oh, I remember this. I used to pretend that it was my castle, Sir Sal and I would run around the halls. I wish life was simple like that again, I want to be a little kid one more time before I have to fully grow up." Jacie whispered to herself. She continued to flip through the book until her eyes become heavy, the next thing she knew, she fell to the floor, and her vision went black.

--

A moan escaped her lips, her hands went up to her head, and started to rub it when her mind finally realized that something or someone was breathing on her. Her eyes flew open to only be meant with blazing red eyes staring back at her; Jacie sat up, and kicked away from the creature. "Go away!" She screamed at the black wolf.

The wolf growled at her as it moved closer to her, when the girl stopped moving, the animal started to sniff Jacie. The wolf's ears perked up quickly, it glanced around the woods, and started to run off with a howl. Jacie jumped up, she dusted herself off, and wondered what the wolf was spooked by; that didn't matter to her right now. She needed to figure out where she was, and how she got back home.

She coughed and tried to push away the fog that had surrounded her, she pushed her hair away from her face, and fixed the crown on her head. "Alright, now to figure out where I am." Before Jacie could go anywhere though, a pale, deathly creature walked up to her, she thought the creature almost looked human but it almost looked like the creature was floating. She soon noticed the ripped up silvery wings on the back of the fairy creature. "Hi.. I'm lost. May you able to tell me where I am?"

The fairy creature floated around her, the black eyes looked Jacie all over until it stopped in front of her. "The forgotten forest." It hissed out with a raspy voice.
Jacie frowned with a pout. "That doesn't sound like a very nice name. Though it does match everything else." Her eyes glanced around the black trees and eerily fog.
"It use to have a different name, and this forest use to a beautiful Kingdom but when selfish princess left, everything changed." The fairy hissed and looked Jacie over. "What is your name, child?"
"Jac.." But Jacie wasn't able to finish when the fairy threw her hand out and placed the long, cold fingers across Jacie's lips.
"Child, you must not speak that name out loud. It will get you killed on the spot. Now come with me, you must be new, I still can't understand how new creatures are able to find their way into this place, it should have stopped after the princess left us. That does not matter now though, we need to find shelter before the witches start to fly out." She moved her hand away from Jacie and started to move further into the forest.

Jacie didn't understand why her name was not to spoken about but this place seemed odd and un-safe, she couldn't believe that she was going to follow fairy creature into some darken woods but it seemed the only thing to do right now. Plus, she didn't want to find out if the witches comment was true or not.

"Now, child, I think I may take you to Sal, it seems you haven't been touched by the fog yet." The creature hissed to itself.
Jacie didn't understand what this creature was talking about but she knew one thing, when it spoke about a Sal, Jacie had felt her chest tighten, and her body flinched. She ignored it as she shivered from the coldness.

It was when he had just gotten back from a lonely expedition that he felt more at home with his friends in their den. A place that used to riddle him with emotions he did not wish to reminisce on at this time. Sal had made it back before dark and he could settle in to look over his plans once again to find a proper way out of these dark ages.

He could hear something bumping around in the closet and chuckled to himself. “You know you don’t have to hide in the closet anymore?” The door cracked open as a small pair of eyes glowed within. Then another and another. “Ahhh friends again I see. They are welcome just don’t make a mess.”

The fairies piled out, an unusually high number of three especially for the forest fairies. That was a good sign at least, more fairies were finding safety against the darkness and even though they could not fly it was a good start to him. Glancing at the fairies, Sal released a heavy sigh. Their wings had lost their shimmer and if they weren't torn from almost getting eaten they were limp, completely dead of the magic that used to aid them in flight and cheer.

“Just one day at a time eh girls?” They just nodded at him in response. Things had been so quiet but Sal wasn't one to mind much since he could carry on for them. “I can report that I haven't seen a mermaid yet but they must be near by.” He grabbed out a necklace dangling it in front of one. “Its made of broken shells and isn't too terribly old. I’m sure it just got a little messed up in the waves.” Another note was jotted down as he let the fairy fly off with the shell necklace. “Not many other reports have been made by anyone else but I did get in a little later than I expected. I’m sure they will come back later but I hope none of them were stupid enough to travel unprotected in the fog.” Sal had heard the sounds of the wolf howl earlier and it only increased his growing concern.

Something strange seemed to be happening in the forest and it wasn't just the darkness. It was almost as if something shifted and he wanted to be ready for it. Tempted to prompt an emergency meet up, he began to scribble a note of his latest discoveries, the agenda for the next upcoming week. “I do need to get more supplies don’t I?” Sal looked to the fairies who were distracted by various tasks all over the room, shaking his head.

“I should have known better to not talk to you when I have so many trinkets laying around. Have your fun. You can have it for the both of us. Sal laughed as a fairy had snuck by his foot and began to tickle his toes. “I told you not to do that!” Playfully chasing her around the room was such good fun. They could zip around fast on those small little legs and trying to catch them as they giggled warmed him inside. It was a pleasant relief from everything else in his darkened life.

Just as this thought occurred to him a knock shattered the warm laughter of his den. The fairies scattered to various hiding places to shield themselves from what they thought to be impending doom. A heavy sigh once again left his lips. “Ugh” he groaned, “I just came back in. If you wanted to meet me you should have just sent a messenger first.” Sal opened the door to a sight he long thought to be something he wouldn't ever have had to prepare for.

Jacie followed the Fairy creature for about five miles, she wondered where the creature was taking her. She was starting to get frighten because she had no idea where she was and the Fairy kept mumbling to itself. She cleared her throat about to speak to the creature when it stopped walking, and pointed to a den. "There. That is where Sal lives." She choked out.

The pink hair beauty followed the finger and looked to the den, it didn't even look like anyone lived there anymore but maybe the person was hiding? "Okay? Am I suppose to go there?" Jacie looked around herself after she finished speaking, and realized the Fairy was halfway to the den, she sighed heavily, and ran after her to catch up.

The Fairy knocked on the door, while Jacie crossed her arms against her chest while she waited for whoever lived here to answer here. Jacie had changed a lot since the last time she visited her Kingdom, she had grown up, her old blond hair was turned into a bubble gum pink color, and instead of butterfly wings, she wear her black roses and thorn crown. The only thing that stayed the same was her pale grey eyes.

When the door was opened, Jacie looked up to only be meant with a boy that looked around her age. She tilted her head to the side, he seemed familiar but she couldn't think of why.

"Sir Sal, I found this girl in the middle of the forest. I'm pretty sure that she is new because she's not touched by the darkness; I figured that she may belong to you." The fairy explained.

"Belong? I don't belong to anyone!" Jacie snapped with a huff.

"Calm down, child. Sal helps the ones that are not touched the darkness, to keep them safe." The Fairy spoke to Jacie before she turned back to Sal. "Maybe she's here to help you?" She offered.

Jacie stood there silently after the Fairy hushed her, she didn't want to help anyone, or to be saved; she simply wanted to go home.

Sal was much paler than his former self. Of course he had never really been tan but his face just had a dull sunken look. His white hair didn't seem as fluffy and had a sort of dingy grey. The eyes that once had the sparkle of adventure and magic were now hardened and serious from his new position as a protector for what little good was left. The only difference that seemed more beneficial was that his frame though wiry was not that of the scrawny boy he used to be. He was much taller, with a voice that had also grown rough.

He just looked at her. First with a face of utter shock. He had never thought he would see the day when she came back. All he could do was take the blow and allow her in. “Yes come in, it’s safe here.” Even Sal noticed that he sounded lost in his own voice. “You can stay or go,” he looked to the fairy. “but I will need you to um send out notice of a meeting at the castle ruins sometime tonight or early morning. I need uh help with the others see what they report with. There a little ones here.”

He sill couldn't believe that she was here and couldn't bring himself to look at her. She was so different. The glimpse he got was bright pink, not the , golden strands he remembered. Was he going insane? Maybe the fog was corrupting him too. Looking at her was the only way to know. He turned around forcing himself to look at her. Sal’s face turned to that of slight disgust at the site of her black crown and worst of all her new attitude. He could see it, see how much she didn't care, how much she didn't even know what her stupid selfishness did.

“You, don’t even remember so you? You don’t remember me? Sal? Your best friend.” he more so stated than asked these things. They were piercing like accusations. “I mean of course the place is a little more unrecognizable since you left it for dead all those years ago. You left ME for dead. You left ME alone to deal with your mess and fix your world!” Sal was yelling at this point. Staring at her proved himself. He wasn't even sure he was actually shouting at her.

“Why are you even here?? Why come back now when you have such a great life away from all of us eh? I know it must be so great having REAL friends in that other place. Do they treat you better there? Better than I ever could, better than Sir Sal ever could for you?” He swiped all of his notes off of his desk.

“Do you know how hard it was to grow up? To be forced into-” Sal let out a heavy sigh. “What’s the point it’s not like you care anyway.” He went over to the closet. “You made me scare them. I hope you're happy with yourself.” He opened the door and talked softly into the blackness. “It’s okay, don’t be frightened. I’m sorry I yelled. I’m not angry at you.” cooing gently, he reached his hand inside and gave a soft warm smile, completely unlike how he reacted to her. Even though so much had changed, especially within Sal as an individual, the light and warmth of his heart was still able to shine on some of the creatures of this kingdom.
