Think of the void as a resting place. It isn't exactly like heaven or purgatory or hell, where you're sentient and can walk among a kingdom in the clouds and drink wine and eat cheese and watch Dragonball and shit. It's just a massive dimension for passed Kages whose souls are resting. There is more on this, but it will be revealed with the plot. Know that many kages (the younger ones) are also somewhat confused as to how the Void and everything works, just as how many humans may not be able to explain to you what heaven/hell really is or if it exists (actually... no one can). And it's ok if you don't know every single thing about kage culture, our characters wouldn't either, and it's easily explainable by saying that they lived on a whole different scale of us, with concepts our brains can't even fathom or begin to understand. A kage trying to explain certain things about their lives would be like trying to explain quantum physics to an ant.
