It is 57th galactic year, nearly 400 years since the human race became the first to travel faster than light. Their technology spread throughout the galaxy as they flourished, as pioneers at the forefront of technological advancement. Many men and women struck out to form their own great nations, many of which survive to this day. Yet, although humans are powerful, they are not the only inhabitants of our Milky Way galaxy. There are many others; many more who thrive and prosper as they do. There are many, perhaps dozens of other nations in the galaxy, some forged by warfare, others by business and trade, and others by religion. The majority, of course, by a slew of complex factors. In the 57th galactic year, millions will die, and great empires will fall, just as new ones will rise. Whether it is through war, economic woes, political machinations, or the chaos of the universe itself, there will be great change. The Milky Way Galaxy, and perhaps the universe itself, will remain forever changed. Welcome to Amongst Living Gods, a Sci-Fi NRP that I've been working on in an interest check for nearly two weeks now. Despite the title, there aren't any omnipotent beings in this RP - just the multitude of mortal beings that inhabit it. The point, essentially, is to avoid the typical cliches you see in Sci-Fi - or, if the cliches exist, to do something with them that hasn't been done before. I'm trying to make a roleplay that's unique, and is going to last. You'll find the app sheets below. Despite the fact that some people might have long posts and apps, I encouraged anyone to join - as long as you're able to say things in a relatively interesting, readable way, you've most likely met the requirement. Quality is the key, not just quantity. For the below apps, know that you can include extra things that fit outside of the categories listed if you want. The first IC post will be up soon! History and Culture (and some other things) remain under construction!

An Oathbound Manifold

Technology: The Stoor Manifold has no true technology as it would be properly thought of by most other species. The Stoor exclusively use organic constructs to mimic the utility and function of technological devices used by other factions. Their natural tendency to manipulate genetic structures and the high abundance of heavy elements in their home system have made the Stoor unparalleled in the realm of genetic engineering, and they specialize in using organic constructs to exploit principles of nuclear physics.

Military Structure: The Stoor military is made up of 625 divisions, with 300 for the regular army, 300 for the naval forces, and 25 serving as elite forces. A number of civilian forces control all military wetware, while the Complex acts as military command.

Name: The Grey Stars Coalition
Location: Athens Sector
Flag: WIP
Form of Govt. and Applicable Leader(s): Oligarchy of High Ministers, individual worlds operate on individual systems.

History:
The GSC was born from a coalition of human colonies set out to bring about their vision of eudaimonic societies through advanced genetic engineering and transhumanism. While many methods were pursued, eventually the social engineering ethos of Markov Geist was realized as the most immediately practical of methods in lieu of efficient matter-replication and difficulties in reliable retroviral genetic engineering. Under the principles of Markov Geist, a social ethos created by New Athens Colony that turned the social paradox of self-fullfillment for some being dependant upon the labor of a large exploited lower-class on its head. Instead of trying to eliminate the need for a unskilled and semi-skilled labor class as robotics and automation-advocates had tried for centuries, N-Athen’s solution was to develop a replacement working class in form of vatforms, genejacks, and biosynths. Combined with developments in gestalt and swarm intelligence and control by the neighboring colony of Brightling, a new mass-producible, adaptable, and obedient working class was created and the human workers of New Athens found themselves in a new society of plenty thanks to the tireless labor of the synthetics.

While moralists quarreled over the matters of whether synths had souls (it was eventually judged they did not), and whether the dream of eudaimonia was worth having it built on “neo-slavery” (the masses agreed it was), the ethos of Markov Geist and Synth production rapidly spread across the sector and was adopted en masse by the other eudaimonia-seeking colonies who adapted their own developments in social engineering, genetic engineering, industry, and automation into the principles of Markov Geist. The humans of the Athens Sector were now free to pursue self-fulfillment and satisfaction as they desired.

However the principles of Markov Geist promptly ran into problems when attempts were made to spread it further. While Athens colonies were open to neo-slavery and eudaimonia, their more capitalist and power-seeking neighbors were less than receptive to the idea and its implementation and refused envoys of “upgrades”. Furthermore, the social engineering involved in Markov Geist is fundamentally human in nature, unable to adjust for alien views and interpretations of eudaimonia, as well as the genetic engineering involved in Synths being reliant on the flexible human genome. Thus while eudaimonia rapidly developed in the Athens Sector, it did not spread outwards, and several neighbors went so far as to actively block attempts or subvert them in jealousy of their accomplishments.

Finally, the principles of Eudaimonia did not lend itself well towards natural development of heavy industry and large militaries, which caused a major rude awakening during the short Lanius-Athens war when a race of metallic entities descended upon the Athens sector in search of food such as dense urban centers made of refined industrial metals and rare elements. Despite the large sums of resources and funds raised to build militias and hire mercenaries, several worlds fell before the power of the Lanius before containment fleets could be built and armies raised, and millions died by Lanius living-metal plagues and advanced weapons or by outside powers raiding the reeling colonies to acquire their unique technology. Eventually, the bulk of the Lanius simply left the sector when they finished feeding, and the new fleets were turned to secure the borders of the sector while the colonies rebuilt.

The war changed the Athens sector. More than half of the natural born population was killed before military vatforms were developed in sufficient quality and quantity to replace human troops, and many of the core worlds had been ruined in the crossfire and from Lanius exploitation while the Athens sector realized it was surrounded by hostile foes. The military-industrial complex was not dismantled. Instead the new Grey Stars Coalition armed itself in preparation to exact vengeance on those who sought to attack it while it was weak, and to retake the fallen cradle worlds at any cost.

General Military Information:
The GSC Military is a blunt warmachine, akin to the Red Army of the Soviet Union during the Second World War. Large fleet formations deployed en-masse, large space-dropped army units, mass-produced weapons and vatform soldiers. While the GSCM loses something in individual initiative and innovation with its extensive use of Synth personnel directed by AI overseers and tacticians, they have little other choice due to low natural-born population and even fewer able commanders and admirals to lead such forces. The flipside is that with mass-production comes deep reserves and plenty of replacement personnel and equipment, backed by highly efficient military-industrial complexes adapted from eudaimonic technology.

WIP
Name: Greater Interplanetary Commonwealth

Location: Approx. 4200 ly sphere of influence originating from Sol, in the galactic South

Form of Govt. and Applicable Leader(s): Deliberative Democracy

History: Germany and Poland's continued economic and military growth until 2035 and the slow decline in many other EU countries left them as the strongest, most prosperous economies in Europe, which meant that they became a practical magnet for many industries looking to escape the economic declines in the Russian block, the rest of the EU, China, and many other parts in the world. The US's strong position meant that it was able to weather these troubles and grow closer with Poland, an emerging economic power, and Germany, an economic power that continued to grow.

The growing robotics fields in Poland and Germany(particularly nanorobotics) provided an extremely attractive method of industrial production, while the renewable energy programs present in the EU meant relative shelter from the looming fossil fuel crisis. When the crisis did finally hit, several years later, the effects were massive. Particularly due to the effects the crisis had on China's trade partners, growing distrust for the PRC's government, and the slow movement of many industries out of China due to the shrinking need for a manual labor force, the Chinese economy began to quickly fall, barely recovering thanks to further increased need for rare earths - though even that sector of Chinese industry was in danger thanks to growing interest in extraterrestrial mining operations. Continued economic stability in Central Europe allowed it to quickly become an important part of the astronautics industry, eventually expanding into a top-notch, quick to join others in the construction of far less temporary space stations.

Intense investment in astronautics research in the German/Polish-led EU, in a coalition with the US and Canada, culminated in 2073 - as the US remained powerful in the economic field and was already a major space power, the advent of Alcubierre Drive allowed for the coalition to rapidly expand into space. This meant far easier access to extraterrestrial resources, and thus domination over an abundance of valuable resources that were quickly becoming scarce on Earth. Poland, eventually, became not only a military power on Earth, but also one in space, along with Germany and the rest of the EU The eventual spread of the technology did soon allow other nations to follow suit, though not until the US-EU coalition so thoroughly dominated the field that other nations simply couldn't make much headway. They were simply forced to capitulate, as most nations not within the US-EU coalition we unable to recover from economic woes that had been going on for several decades. Evidently, though, the emergence of FTL technology posed a danger in that, were there extraterrestrials who existed but had not contacted or taken not of the human race, they likely would do so very soon. Upon the detection of transmissions in an unidentified language from the galactic north of Sol, formal military alliance between the nations of Earth became very soon necessary. In fifteen years, the necessity of it became clear, as the very same aliens whose transmissions had been uncovered began to attack human mining vessels near human space - as a result of their own economic troubles and slow collapse, the aliens made the decision to attack the humans in hopes of curing their economic ills and to prevent the rise of a new power.

The Human response, in essence, was a closer alliance - to become as one nation in order to prevent their downfall. Quite simply, the humans were utterly militarily outgunned. Direct confrontation would be virtually suicide, and, as a result, covert action was the only option. Earth's best special forces units, equipped with new cloaking technology, managed to infiltrate the aliens and taint their food supply with a specially engineered bacterium, designed for maximum incubation period so that the absolute maximum number of them would become infected.

Their next step was to sabotage military facilities in certain sectors, to divert attention away from the spreading bacteria by way of creating fear of a military offensive that, in reality, never even existed. In mere Earth weeks, the deaths began to occur - millions dropped dead thanks to the disease, long before a cure or vaccine could even be produced. Humans - now known as the Greater Interplanetary

Commonwealth - began a vicious assault on the alien territory, sweeping them aside with sheer numbers and careful yet extremely deadly sabotage. Before any of the other extraterrestrial nations could even react to the conflict, it had already been won, by the very beings that were expected to have been swept aside. Humans made their mark on the galaxy that day, and quickly set about manipulating the knowledge of the aliens they had just defeated for their own advancement. Soon after, with the discovery of photon-matter conversion technology, they were able to refit most of their military craft, and began to dispatch envoys just as they made contact with the Stoor.

Though initial relations were rocky thanks to an unexplained, diplomatic relations were quickly formally established as Stoor envoys arrived at Earth and began formal negotiations, although, once again, relations quickly spiraled into chaos as Stoor raids and attacks on the borders of human space became common. The government of Earth, after discovering the Stoor homeworld and the worlds surrounding it, pushed for a peace deal, which, in essence, allowed for transit of immigrants and trader between both nations, albeit with some controls. Even as Stoor business enter Terra's markets, the human government makes plans to strike back - and obtain a fearsome reputation in the galaxy.

Name: Ari [The Custodians]
General Galactic Location: The inner third of the Sagittarius arm
History:
Set Aolimun - The Age of Ignorance/Apathy

Those humans who have had the opportunity to meet individuals of the Ari almost-universally describe them as a species with scant regard for humanity. While generally peaceful toward humans, the Ari make no effort to keep their condescension toward humanity a secret. Human xenobiologists find this cold sentiment toward their kind perplexing, seeing as humans and Ari share so much in common. Superficially, they are extremely similar in appearance to humans, appearing as slender, lithe humanoids with fair skin. Their faces are gaunt and gracile; their ears long with pointed lobes. With only minor anatomical and physiological differences distinguishing them from humans, it is perplexing to many humans that the Ari do not show a greater appreciation for their similarities.

The Ari, contrary to the beliefs of some human xenobiologists, do indeed recognize the similarities between themselves and humans. They see themselves in the human race, a darker, more primitive form of their own race. To the Ari, humanity harkens to their own bleak past.

The race that would become the modern Ari arose on a world phenomenally similar to the Earth: a mild planet with an agreeable nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere and a world of large landmasses rich in diverse biomes. Like humans, the Ari evolved from tree-dwelling beasts that learned to walk on two legs and went about the grasslands in a bipedal fashion. Their kind developed from hunter-gatherer clans into specialized societies as humans did. Agrarian city states became empires that vied with one another for dominance. Weaponry advanced, empires ascended and died out, but war was a constant on the Ari homeworld. The wars were fought - as they were on ancient Earth - for greater dominance of the planet's natural resources.

The ancestors of the Ari, known in this epoch as the Aolimi - the ignorant - developed the ability to travel across their own star system; a technology derived from the construction of ballistic weapons for their wars. The first terraformation efforts of the Aolimi were attempted soon thereafter, but their aims were shortsighted and bellicose in nature. Terraformation in this era was performed only to allow future colonies to develop so that native materials could be harvested for conflicts. It was in this dark, primitive time that the Aolimi first dabbled in the art of creating life on dead worlds. In this age of ignorance, the Aolimi could have never guessed that they were setting the foundation for what would become the very purpose of their race.

The-sem Sarac- The Catastrophe

The earliest of the terraformed worlds - both of which confined to the home system - increasingly became factories for conflicts being fought on the homeworld. The Aolimi homeworld had at this point suffered catastrophic environmental changes caused by a swollen population and exploitation of resources. The society had become one of decadence and consumption - native cultures having long been assimilated and forgotten. The richness of life on the planet had been stripped clear. Two biomes now existed on the Aolimi world: vast, swollen megalopoli and barren wastelands .In their greed for greater control of their world, the Aolimi had failed to recognize that anything worth fighting for on this planet had been consumed.

The rape of their world saw its climax in one final globe-spanning war. In desperation or unbridled hatred, a weapon of last resort was used. A machine that focused the energy of the sun itself was activated. In a single, blinding flash, the homeworld was bathed in sunfire. The oceans vaporized, continents melted, and more than twenty billion souls perished. The Aolimi had all but annihilated themselves. Those spared of the Catastrophe watched from the colony worlds as the world that had birthed their species was obliterated.

The survivors were wracked with grief to see the fruits of their greed and savagery. They mourned their dead, but most importantly, they grieved the loss of their world. Expanses of smoldering glass rising from seas of magma were all that remained of the world that had given birth to their ancestors. The perfect nitrogen and oxygen atmosphere had been addled in the Catastrophe as well; noxious gasses released during the melting of the landmasses had permanently rendered the very air toxic and thick. The refreshing thundershowers that rolled across the ancestral plains of their race had become hazy mists that yielded only drizzles of sulfuric acid. The paradise that had birthed the Aolimi had been transformed into a sterile hell through their own recklessness.

In the aftermath of the Catastrophe, the Aolimi as a race came to agree that what had transpired on their homeworld was a heinous sin that would disgrace them and their progeny for all time. The survivors recognized that it was not just the lives of their own kin that had been lost. An uncountable number of living things had been destroyed forever, an entire living world had been snuffed out. It was not sufficient for the Aolimi to vow that the errors made on their homeworld would never recur. As species, they felt the need to atone for their destruction.

No longer would they allow their greed to poison and destroy another world. As a race, they vowed to foster and create life - never to destroy it except in the preservation of other living things. From thence onward, they referred to themselves as the Ari - the Custodians.

((To be completed later.))
