If there's no previous instances within the universe they are writing for where Hero X uses power Y in a particular way, therefore not breaking continuity with Power Y, at the very least they should strive to avoid throwing in whatever power is convenient for the sake of an easy plot device. Nobody really likes a deus ex machina when it's used like that.

Though Red Son and Injustice aren't bad (Notice how both of those are about Superman in some way being a supremely terrifying overlord because he believes he is doing the right thing/is saving people by controlling them/etc). Basically stories that don't try to nerf him because they think otherwise he's too OP and boring. (Which he can be, in the wrong plot.)
