"So, the Republic would have the galaxy believe that its heart is secure. Today's events, however, show that there is nothing that can stop our forces from total victory." - General Grievous

The Republic has fallen

Twenty years to the day, the unthinkable happened, the Confederacy of Independent System led by general Grievous executed a multi-front assault on the Republic. From the beginning of the war, Grievous had known that an assault on Coruscant alone could not win the war, for the Open-Circle Fleet would rally and push aside anything that came to face it. Such was why for the duration of the conflict, he never contributed his full forces, taking losses where he could, and drawing the Republic into believing the Federation weaker than what it truly was. Even when Dooku abandoned the CIS to accept trial by the Jedi Council, Grievous planned ahead and engaged the first Battle for Coruscant as planned, capturing Palpatine and allowing him to go free with the jedi Kenobi and Skywalker. With the Republic gaining ground against the CIS, and moving deeper into the Outer Rim, time was nigh to spring the trap.

As the fleets spread to execute the Outer Rim campaign, reports came in from Kamino, Kuat and Fondor that large concentrations of Federation warships had been sighted in route. Rerouting vessels from central command, the Open Circle Fleet rallied to shore up defenses of the three worlds, unwittingly falling into the trap set for them. As soon as battle was engaged, Grievous launched a surprise attack on Coruscant, engaging the Second Battle of Coruscant, and smashing the defense forces that had been stationed there. In just hours the Republic had gone from holding an advantage in momentum, to helplessly watching as their most important worlds were under siege, and Coruscant burned. Worse yet, in his bombardment of the planet, Grievous had strategically targeted the Senate Building and the Jedi Temple, vaporizing both buildings in a rain of turbolaser fire.

Left without a capital, their centres of the military under siege, and the CIS rallying to Grievous' call stronger than ever, General Kenobi issued the order to disengage and fallback to the emergency rendezvous point above the galactic plane. From here, Kenobi and the admirals of the fleet who were able to rally, came up with a plan to further the survival of not only the Republic, but also the Jedi order. The remnants of the remaining fleets pressed on in their own battles, fighting out what they could and holding the line against the CIS even as the Clone Wars came to an official end with Kenobi's general order of retreat. Broken and disorganized, the Republic broke into dozens of successor states in the wake of the Federation's decisive victory, each looking to survive either alongside the Federation, or in the shadows of it. Even the Jedi themselves fell to the crushing blow against the Republic, the one copy of the Jedi Archives with the Open Circle Fleet and the Mandalorians, and many of their order cut off from friendly forces, those still on the front faded from sight until they could afford to surface once more.

Twenty years later, and the Republic still lingers on in the spirit of those successor states holding out across the galaxy. Peace is a tenuous concept, as the Federation struggles to maintain control over former republic space, and put down uprisings as they occur. Worrying for some is the rise of a new power known as the Empire, one that has coalesced from former commanders of the Open Circle Fleet, and taken important worlds formerly of the Old Republic. Despite this, the republic states hold strong together in a common bond of kinship and tradition against the Empire and the Federation. Even the Grand Republic of Mandalore, and the Jedi Enclaves have come to stand alongside the other successor states, finally entering into the conflict at hand after fifteen years of structuring their government to support not just the Mandalorians and Jedi, but also the Kaminoan refugees and a greater number of unaligned force-users.

The galaxy is poised yet again to enter into a civil war as the larger powers look to each other as a threat to their own stability and freedom.

The OOC

Welcome to Star Wars: Grievous Ascent, an alternate timeline SW NRP set after the fall of the Republic and in an era where for some, the Clone Wars never ended, yet for others it was the end of their way of life. Players can take up the role of a faction aligned with the Republic successor states, the Trade Federation, the Empire, the Grand Republic of Mandalore, or even as one of many neutral states just looking to survive the war looming on the horizon. Beyond the coming war, the main point of this RP, however, will be the story of our nations and how they have come to define themselves in the years following the death of Chancellor Palpatine and the end of the Republic. Many things have changed from the beginning of the Clone Wars all the way to the moment the IC begins. The question is, where does your nation or organization stand in a galaxy divided?

The rules

- First and foremost, I am the GM, but my word is not law. I am the interpreter of the rules, but if I have made an error in judgement, do call me out on it. What makes an RP good is when the players know the rules, and follow them, but what makes one truly great is when the players feel confident in telling the GM that they dun goofed and the story prospers because of the trust between GM and player.

- Honor the intentions and goals of your fellow players. We're building a collaborative realm here, and though I may have invested quite a bit into my own faction, I feel it more important to see everyone have enjoyment of the setting, rather than cling to a particular facet that may not even be that important. Yeah, Mace Windu may be kicking around the Enclaves as I have it in my own NS, but if someone says "Would it be alright if Windu was part of this nation?" I'm going to very likely say "Sure thing, go for it."

- Don't be a dick. This really should be rule one, as we are all here to have fun and write a damn good story. If you do something, or think about doing something to someone else's nation/creation and feel that you would be upset if the same was done to you, chances are you are ruining someone's fun. Let's not do that.

- If you have an idea for a plot, no matter what it may be, and it involves someone else's faction in any way, talk to them about it. This kind of falls under both rule two and three, in that you should respect the intentions of your fellow players and bring things up with them if it involves their creations. Otherwise, you're kind of being a dick.

- I will forget to list rules. Don't be surprised if this space expands.

I'm curious about this. If I was to join, I'd be interested in playing the role of the Confederacy. I've got some inquiries, though.

One, what happened to Dooku after that whole 'glassing Coruscant' thing? With no Palpatine, that'd make him the big Sith bitch in town if he escaped or otherwise survived and retained his position ('abandoned the CIS' seems out of character, let alone surrendering himself to the Jedi; he had thoroughly dedicated himself to the ) presumably free to undertake the Confederate version of the New Order, and beholden to some measure of whatever information Sidious had been keeping from him about extragalactic crab-wearing planet rider psychotics and the dictatorial Empire. Likely incorporating a similar moment of view-shattering betrayal- pre or post mortem- as when Anakin was ordered to decapitate him, only with less decapitating.

Two, what of Grievous, on a similar note? Is he some sort of head of state? Did he dieded? I was of a mind that he would be less than inclined to keep leading around droids and the odd fleshy marine after conquering- or in this case, breaking- the galaxy. And one doubts anyone would be able to stop him retiring without severe trouble. Maybe he went back to to Kaleesh as a more militant Dalai Lama, a sort of living Buddha archetype, except instead of being ritually embalmed, he's just a heavily-trinketed killbot cyborg.

Three, is an outright glassing of Coruscant as a whole vitally necessary? It seems an unexplainable, unjustifiable snafu on the level of destroying Alderaan. Something that'd make a few too many waves. It doesn't bother me overmuch, and fits in with Star Wars' habit of planets getting inexplicably wrecked and superweapons terribly misused, but I still feel inclined to ask of the import.

Four, on the note of 'occupying Republic space,' what's the Confederacy up to there? The CIS New Order was that of a corporate-friendly, decentralized galaxy. Essentially a reboot of the Republic, tearing down the old bureaucratic dreck and financial nepotism, minimizing federalism, and probably proceeding down the same or at least a similar line over time to develop into NEW bureaucratic dreck, financial nepotism and incompetent federalism. I'm not sure what interest confederating systems have occupying Republic-aligned space rather than puppeting it or leaving it be.

I had my own conceptions for history while the Captain was tempting me over, but what's present leaves information to be had, and I had revisions in mind in line with some of the tweaks in the interest check. Looks rather neat so far.

Heyo, welcome around, I'll be glad to answer the questions you have as I can. Take in mind, I did just wake up, so some of this may be edited when I'm a bit more conscious xD

Through the beginning of the war, just like in the actual canon, Dooku had been feeling that this was the right thing to do, that he was establishing the Confederacy to right the wrongs of the Repbulic as a whole. In background canon and such, he was truly a good guy with his intentions, just more than a little misled, and as the war dragged on, he began to fall. This time, Kenobi and others made a more concentrated effort to understand Dooku, rather than condemn him. What helped, is that during the Naboo Conflict, Qui-Gon Jinn had not been killed, but was wounded and forced to resign from active duty. His ideals of nobility and actual reform led him to refuse Sidious' offer to become apprentice in heart, even if he did accept in word. Grievous also had a major part in shifting him away from what the Confederacy was becoming, but I'll get more on that next. With the Council actually attempting to understand, rather than judge immediately like in the movies, Dooku looked to see if he could find a more amenable solution between everyone, and in a move against both Sidious and Grievous, he officially surrendered to the Jedi Council. As for where he may be now, he's freely roaming about as I haven't decided what to do with him. It can be assumed he is in the Jedi Enclaves, but I won't say yes or no on the matter in case someone has a preference to use him for a Republic/neutral state.

Grievous took head of state from Dooku when he learned of his intent to surrender, and during the Clone Wars he only became more ruthless and domineering towards those under him. The Confederacy lost most of their ideals as the war progressed and he began to win favor with Sidious over Dooku, eventually losing what little remained and becoming an overblown revolution when the count left. After the war ended, he did return to Kaleesh and became almost exactly what you mention, some kind of militant Dalai Lama. The Kaleesh are now one of the more fervent upholders of CIS/Federation rule, with Grievous having set an example for all of them to follow, and now many can be seen among the armies leading droids to keep the peace where they can. Grievous himself is still going pretty strong, his squishy parts having never been pressure-tested by Windu, or shot with a blaster by Kenobi, and he's begun to have plans for the last bastions of the Republic, as well as the Empire and the GRM.

Grievous knew a land invasion of Coruscant would only end in a defeat, as the Republic soldiers there would stall him and his armies until the remaining elements of the Grand Army could rally back to push him out of orbit. This was why he ordered a strategic glassing of the planet, targeting specific points and smashing the areas around them. Part of the reason for this was his knowledge of Palpatine being Sidious, and there was no way in hell he was going to face him in battle. So, while I did use the phrase "glassed the surface" in the int.check in error, a good portion of Coruscant was destroyed, but by no means the entire surface. It is still a habitable world, and somewhat important to the successor states if only for the position it holds and the idea of it.

Also, don't get me wrong, Grievous knew what kind of a move it was, and the galaxy did respond to it. This was the main reason for the general order to retreat, in that Kenobi and the other generals saw what lengths Grievous would go to gain victory, and thought it best to cut their losses there and lay low until they could fight back.

"Occupying Republic space" is another term I used a little liberally. What it truly is, is more of what you have mentioned at the end there, in that they have installed their own friendly governors and merely make their presence known. The CIS government is essentially the same as the former Republic's, except seats are held by corporate owners and the power remains in their hands. What role Grievous plays, is that of a commander in chief with actual power. While the 'senate' does their voting and passing bills and such, he holds the true power and guides the armies, as well as having direct say in all matters of CIS business. So basically, they tore down the old bureaucratic dreck and financial nepotism, to install their own system that has developed into new bureaucratic dreck and financial nepotism.

I had my own conceptions for history while the Captain was tempting me over, but what's present leaves information to be had, and I had revisions in mind in line with some of the tweaks in the interest check. Looks rather neat so far.

By all means, though as a CIS player, you won't be taking up the entirety of the nation, and more so a region of their space. This is because while I set up the CIS to be the big NPC that is kind of there, I still want for others to be free to play as a nation that is of interest to them. Allowing one single person to control the entire CIS, even myself as GM, is too much and leaves too big of a gap in power between the players.

Any other questions or ideas, feel free to either hit me up with a PM or leave them here, and I'll do my best to address them. Once again, welcome aboard.

The Ishkar Consortium

Overview: The Ishkar Consortium is an rogue nation composed of the remnants of the Gen'Dai race, led by the Ak'rathal clan leader "Mercurius". Existing from the shadows of the Deep Core, the Consortium grew in power and rebuilt the former glory of the Gen'Dai race in secret. For thousands of years, the Consortium gathered resources and connections from the other sectors of the galaxy to lead up to the status they have now. By the end of the Clone Wars the Iskhar Consortium holds a massive amount of influence, power, and resources from the Deep Core to the Core Worlds. Unlike the reputation the non-Consortium Gen'Dais established, they are well disciplined, philosophically enlightened and organized.

Due to the Ishkar Consortium's isolationist mandate, direct contact with the rest of the galaxy is prohibited. As a workaround to this mandate, a forward operation called Kuvari Syndicate was formed.

Capital: Byss
Holdings: Sector 5 - (Beshqek system, Empress Teta system, Odik system, Praklith system, Jerrilek system, Iope System, Kuar System, Symbia system, Keeara Major system) Ruan system and Foerost system.

I don't see why we could have an unofficial pact regarding that. Both stygium and cortosis smuggling earns people a lot of money, but is a high-risk scenario, in that others would be on the lookout to steal it and claim the money for themselves. What would you say about the Hexarchy offering the usage of some of their stealth ships to deliver shipments, in exchange for a bit of the cash? And maybe the Gen'Dai could provide security for some stygium shipments, or even buy some themselves from the Ilythiiri and deliver it to others?

(And this is why I love criminal undergrounds)

So, here's a basic outline of my race.

Name: Still at the drawing board for the overall name, but two of the major sub-factions (if there will be any more than that) will be called Zenrax and Pyrax.
Location: Either the Wild Space or Unknown Space.
Holdings:

Race: Just one major species other than human, if any. I'm not entirely sure where to go from there beyond saying that the [non-human people] exhibit many human characteristics, and are Force-sensitive in their own specialized ways.

Government and Leaders: It'll likely be an imperial federation, led by Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala, along with the supreme leaders of each of the native factions, which are enjoying the benefits of unity for the first time in millennia.

Persons of Importance: It'll be easily the Skywalker family, along with the Emperors of both factions -- to include generals of slightly minor importance. This list will include Jedi who have chosen to leave the Order in favor of the more spiritually relaxed culture that this faction enjoys.

Military: Along with clone troopers defected from the former Republic, they have their own Force-users and sufficient native troops to call themselves well-defended. Unfortunately I know very little of the weapons used in Star Wars aside from the basic small arms mentioned everywhere. So, I'll need help with that.

History: Two or three major factions of a small sector in [region undetermined] were separated in times of antiquity. In addition to being separated culturally and politically, they were in various stages for millennia. While in later years they slowly grew to recognize each other as more than just worthy adversaries, the advent of the Clone Wars forced them to adopt an idea that they would have taken many decades to truly agree upon: a lasting peace, or even possibly unity of these otherwise close factions.

It wasn't until the later years of this conflict that the Republic and the Federation took notice of this strange, outlying faction and its potential for power. Both sides sent emissaries to both recruit this newly united faction over to their cause, even staying long enough to exchange their ideals and knowledge to a small extent, just to entice the [unnamed species'] to join their respective sides.

Eventually, they leaned over towards the Republic enough for the latter to send Padme Amidala, the prominent Senator from Naboo on routine missions to this area to entice this faction to finally back the Republic in the war. A few years later, the newly-formed government of [Undetermined] decided to draft an informal military agreement with the Republic. They would allow the Republic to station troops there, but they would not be fully committing to an alliance.

With Padme Amidala on the way to sign the treaty, the Republic would have gained a vital ally in securing that region of space. However, the attack came while Amidala was still within Imperial space, and the treaty never officially materialized. Instead, when Anakin Skywalker rushed over to Amidala's side with his own regiments of Clone Troopers, the agreement was amended: They were free to stay, so long as they were fully committed to keeping [Nation name] safe from both internal and external aggression.

It's been twenty years since then, and the Clone Troopers have fully integrated with native forces to create a truly terrifying threat to other local powers. In addition, [Nation Name] has opened up its borders to other Force-users so that they may too come to enjoy the peace and tranquility offered by living within their borders.

Aside from that, here are the other things I've got in mind.

Other: There are two notably unusual Force-users common within this faction, not normally found outside of Ralgon space. The first type is mostly found in Pyrax, and includes those able to tap into the raw energy of the Force to produce fire, lightning, and other such energies. In addition, they are largely immune to most types of blaster bolts, and carry an innate resistance to the heat produced by lightsabers, among other such objects. However, they are highly vulnerable to shrapnel should they be struck by it.

The second type is commonly found in Zenrax, and includes those able to interact directly with the lifeblood of the world -- more specifically, its water and its soil. They have great control over the minerals of the earth, including its water, and they have used this power to create many small wonders for themselves in the past. More recently though, they have used this ability to help the Jedi fashion crystals for their lightsabers -- a weapon that is still considered exotic by Zenraxian standards, despite its usefulness. Despite their innate strength and durability, they are sensitive to heat, although they can easily use the water within their own bodies to regulate their internal temperature, if they must.

__________

That's really all I've got on the drawing board. Any help hammering this out will be appreciated.

Assuming Sigma doesn't mind having a neighbor, I think I'll claim Eriadu and the rest of the Seswenna sector (and perhaps a bit more, but I'll decide on that later). Before I get started in earnest, however, I need to know what exactly happened to Wilhuff Tarkin. I saw it mentioned in the Interest Check that he's currently serving the Grand Republic of Mandalore; is that correct?

Also, will you be manually providing shared plotlines/Galaxy-wide situations for the RPers, Alfhedil?

Noted for Seswenna, just let me know if you decide on anything else. As for Tarkin, he followed the majority of the Open Circle Fleet in their retreat to the rendezvous point, and has been largely a voice of strategy and tactics for the remnants, and later on the Grand Republic of Mandalore. At the current moment, he's serving as Grand Admiral of the Fleets, essentially THE MAN of the GRM armada.

As for plotlines and galaxy-wide events, these will be provided as they occur in IC, as I prefer to see things created from what everyone has done, rather than attempt to force an event that, while cool, doesn't make as much sense. I've always been an opponent of RBE(Random Bullshit Events) and thusly, any event I create for the RP, will have been advertised via IC events long before it actually comes about.

Neat. Very thought through, now that I've got the full story. The deal I had in mind needed a somewhat ideal if hypocritical and disgruntled confed Dooku, though, so no-go even for a Confed member/successor, and it's not something I'm gonna push to change. That'd be mucking up the whole point. Concept's better saved for another game, and I ought stick to the low-fantasy pulp game and the on-life-support cold war thing I've already joined.

Ahh, I can already see a very pleasant partnership with the Hexarchy. Expect the Remnants be willing to provide an adequate security force to the Hexarchy's smuggling operation, provided they'll offer the steath ships for smuggling runs of the Remnants in return.

Just a disclaimer though, the Remnants are isolationists which makes them handle their operations from their forward bases, and not directly from their capital. So smuggling goods into or out of Remnant capital territory would undergo tedious processing.
