Here's a crude mockup:

That could clutter quickly. I'd recommend a dropdown system, with only one line while unexpanded, if this system was implemented.

When you people say "dropdown" I think of the HTML element. You mean an expanding box. That I'm okay with.

I wouldn't say the terminology is that important in this case, but essentially, yes.

It helps my brain. Dropdown is a very specific term that usually either refers to a form or a menu. It is similar in concept to what you're suggesting, but the long-established implementation of these two forms generally consume the whole definition of it.

I agree.

Ah, okay then. I don't believe something like this should take too much effort, if I understand how the notification code works right now, but Mahz can surely tell us.

Will it really get all that cluttered? Whats the likelihood of someone getting more than eight or ten mentions/quotes in a single topic between two visits?

On the roleplay I'm on? It's practically guaranteed.

Hmm... That was unexpected. It certainly puts a wrinkle in the idea put forth so far. Such an idea needs to cater to all sorts of crowds.

How many of those notifications are relevant to you beyond simply "to be read"?

A thread-specific notifications menu would perhaps be beneficial if the number of notifications exceeds n, but until it reaches that point, then it would only be cluttering to have a menu. The size of n would of course be up for discussion, but even so, this would probably be semi-complex to code.

For now though, we'd think it would be easier to simply have the notifications stay just on the notifications page. But this idea is still worth discussing.

A total of none of them. I just take to often refreshing the page, and so the notifications stack up. But that idea sounds very interesting. Really, the only complication would just be to insert an if-statement that takes the number of notifications on that thread. Since the function will already be summoning the notifications for that thread, it just has to count them and then choose whether to display the box or not.

We suspected as much.

Perhaps it would be advisable to try to also get the people in said thread to use less @mentions, then? After all, if there is something that requires your attention there, it will be buried beneath the irrelevant @mentions and easily missed.

Either way, this conversation should be about the implementation and usage of the proposed feature as a whole, not my irrelevant instance of requiring it. Are there any more thoughts about the implementation? Or how to keep it from cluttering?

Displaying the latest 5 or so notifications should be sufficient, with the ability to View All or expand the box to show all.

Beyond that, @Mahz might need to make the notifications system more robust and able to toggle specific notification preferences (don't notify me for ratings or quotes, for example). It's been requested before, though, so I'm sure it's on his list of considerations.

Or for mobile place it under titles.

-You received ## new Likes.
-You received ## new Laughs.
... etc

We don't use @mentions; we use quotes. Regardless, every post is read by everybody (in most circumstances), and certainly by me, which is why I desire an options to customize notifications, even if I wish to turn them off completely. Notifications are useless to me, and are little more than a tally at the top.

@LegendBegins I actually use @Mentions quite a lot more than quotes. If the context isn't so important, or my reply is immediately below the post I'm replying to, quotes just seem like excess scrolling to me.

@TheMaster99
We often have three to six people posting at once. Some sort of mention or quote is necessary to differentiate replies.

Edit: This is a backup/roleplay account of LegendBegins.

@Etcetera Yeah, like I said, when you can reply immediately after the post, the quote doesn't seem necessary. Obviously if 15 people are posting simultaneously, a quote would help.

Honestly, I'd prefer a system that puts quotes into an expandable box with a bit of a preview of the quote within the box.

I'd rather not, in turn - it often just means that I have more things I have to specifically click open to see. Scrolling is an action much easier done than clicking. Found them [collapsing quotes] annoying more often than not on other sites that use them...

I've actually found the opposite. Generally, you only need a sentence or two for context, and you can expand if you need more.
