So I don't really have any sort of plot or story in mind, I just want to do a D&D style (so monsters, magic, etc) RP set in a pseudo Pirates of the Carribean type setting. Obviously not on Earth, some fantasy realm instead, with nonhuman player characters totally allowed.

Anyone interested? I'm totally open to ideas for plots and the like here, I have no real direction for the thing.

Maybe I have been playing the new Carribean! game to much, but I love this idea. Could have it set in a world where eighty percent of the landmass was flooded, and left people heavily reliant on ships. And because most technology was destroyed in The Great Rise, then there wouldn't be anything above a Ship of the Line, and even that would require momentous ability and a large Dry Docks.

With a high magic setting, I think things would adapt :P I could see the Elves living in giant boats of living wood, the Dwarves owning the mountains that make up the largest remaining landmasses and having a near monopoly on large ship construction, and the aquatic races becoming very powerful as suddenly everyone is forced to deal with them. Not even any reason to have tech destroyed, it would just change. Also, I could totally see there being a thriving industry among pirates of tearing apart ruined boats and combining the still intact portions to form new vessels that are a blend of old world styles. Also, I imagine that aquatic races such as Sahuagin and the merfolk would be able to construct ships from aquatic materials, then sell them to the surface races.

Ooh, also, Dwarves would probably be the leading pioneers of all-metal boats, but more commonly (and way more cool) they could build boats out of that type of volcanic stone that actually floats.

Also, I found a thing that would be cool to incorporate: http://strolen.com/viewing/Anchor_Spirits

I could also see a new variant of elves: marsh elves. Highlands and places like that may not be completely flooded, just to the point where, say, the ground is just under a half-foot of water or so. Great trees would still grow, letting the elves still live without being on the seas. And, for that matter, elves could make floating islands of plantlife, and they could also make floating islands of mud and dirt- ever heard of the native Mexicans, ah, Aztecs, were they? They had floating farms.

Being a shapeshifter would be cool in this environment

I really like the semi-feral Halflings from the Darksun setting, basically totally savage cannibalistic pygmies. Gotta have those.

I'd be interested. Especially if I could play as a Darfellan. Orca Inuits.

I'm probably going to play as some sort of little unseelie faerie sorceress with a permanently hasted sloth as an animal companion, so an eskimo Orc should be fine :P

I think I'll just be a sea serpent until I meet you all. A small, man-sized one that hops into your boats and starts flailing around for fun

Oooor you could play as a character that could actually interact with the rest of us. Try this on for size:

A shapeshifter can flail about and then turn into a humanoid form whenever he's about to be skewered.

Being a shapeshifter would be cool in this environment

Well, I enjoy 'Waterworld'-type settings and have been thinking about/looking for one lately, so color me interested. ^_^

I don't want to make any waves or rock the boat (it's okay, you can groan and throw fruit at me), so can I ask if any original races are allowed? No problem if not, just curious.

I have a favorite 'bosun' I like to use for this sort of thing, as well as a ship's doctor I haven't properly used. Both humans. I could also pull out or make some characters from a few other races I have filed away (see question above). If new PCs are preferred, that's fine, too.

I've also got some rough nation ideas, if any are needed. I like the arrangement that's been worked out so far, though.

I think I'd want the original races to be run past me first, but I'm certainly open to them.

I'm almost considering having one character be the boat itself, basically one of those Anchor Spirits from the article that I linked higher up. Boat has no actual pilot at the wheel, the boat steers itself. Sometimes it's even kind enough to tell the crew where they're going.

Of course. I can send some blurbs on them via PM in a little bit.

Ah, interesting idea. Somewhat reminiscent of the King of Red Lions from the Zelda Wind Waker game? I haven't played, but it was what first came to mind (also Farscape, sorta). If that's the case, probably don't need a bosun then, unless he's some dedicated caretaker and gofer or something. Doctor's still an option. Some kind of fussy dwarven merchant also amuses me. But I'm not settled on any specific character idea yet.

Keep in mind, as a pirate crew in a fantasy world, there's also positions on a boat that wouldn't exist in reality, especially in regards to magic.

I have a pathfinder character I've wanted to try and here would be just as good as any to let it out: A half orc paragon of a sorcerer with red dragon blood in his veins (technically crossblooded orc and dragon bloodlines but again shying away from direct character facts, but going to use them for the character skeleton) He is a fire mage through and through, and on the sea, fire is a dangerous threat.

Character concept inspired from: https://unithralith.wordpress.com/2013/03/12/fire-sorcerer-of-ultimate-destruction/

Rough character image, He uses a gun as his casting focus like a wand:

Keep in mind that fire magic doesn't really work too well underwater. The character I'm doing is also a sorcerer, but not focusing on destruction magic so I don't think we'll be at risk for stealing the spotlight from each other :P

Something like a basic flintlock seems in keeping with a pirate setting, no?

Oh I fully intend to have guns in this. I'm thinking wheellock level, they're like flintlock but cooler. Pirates gotta have some guns, yo. I mean, there's going to be cannons, and as soon as there's cannons, guns are only a half-step behind.

I always liked crossbows, but trained men with bows are slightly better than guys with guns. Guns replace crossbows; when they have multiple shots with fast reloads, then bows will also be obsolete.

I always liked either bows, crossbows, and swords, or just guns. Never played- or really liked- anything in between.
