Pretty straight-forward:
The green on most of the map is plains/grasslands. The slightly darker green is hilly grasslands. The really, really dark green is forest.
You'll notice there are some gray-green areas with lots of water running through them. Those are swamps.
Light gray is the start of a mountain. Dark grey is higher altitude mountain. White is snowy peaks.
Yellow = desert. Slightly darker yellow = hilly desert / dunes.
Blue = water. I'm pretty that one came out of left field. ...That's a joke. It's a bad joke, but a joke nevertheless.
EDIT: As an aside, light / thin forests do exist in the grassy areas, but they're thin enough that they don't need to be mapped. Dark-dark green = dense forest.
