"It all began with a simple job." That's how all the good tales start, don't they? One run by a group of regular folk that suddenly turns 'em into saviors, or else winds 'em up dead. That's what an adventure is. Well, I hate adventure. Like to keep my nose and my shoes clean. Unfortunately, life in the sprawl don't always play to our wants, does it?
- "So you wanna be a Shadowrunner?", Peter Brown, 2065, ch.1 pg.1

The culture center of the Confederation of American States, New Orleans, Louisiana, exists as a sort of cultural gumbo. Cultures mash and rail against each other, never quite mixing in the way you'd hope. Still, if you're looking for a place to get away from the tight, business-suit regulation of one of them uppity UCAS burgs, there's none better. Every day's a party here, unless you're nonhuman. Or anything other than white or black.

For you and your team, it was promised to be a getaway. A bad run-in up north meant you had to flee the country, and your usual Johnson provided you the means to get here and stay for a while. Expense paid, on the condition that you do a bit of work for some friends of his while you're in the city. Null sweat, you've done runs all around UCAS, even some in the Native lands. With your team at your back, you can do anything. But he did leave you with a firm warning. Things work a bit different down south, he said. Try not to get in over your head.

You've been provided a safe home base. A nicely sized condo overlooking the water. Real posh, must have cost him a dime. Beyond that, you've got official papers, everything to keep you in the city and on the right side of the law, if that's how you choose to play. As of this moment, you've been in the city for seven days, after which you were promised contact from your Johnson's friend with some work for you. You haven't been told any details about your new employer, only that they would contact you today. What sort of work would they have for you down here in a foreign country? If you wind up in a foreign jail, you might never make it home, so you'll have to play it real cool. Get you and your team through the days in one piece so that you can go back home and resume your regular life. Oh, and try not to deal with any dragons.

So, off the back of another Shadowrun RP that just went up which the GM unfortunately had to put on hold, I've been in the mood for some 'running. This RP is going to be slightly longform, but it will be structured, mostly segmented into missions and inbetweens. There's a solid beginning and an end, and even a middle if the group craves direction. Think of this more as an actual Shadowrun campaign with me as the GM rather than, say, a free-form community-written novel. You will be following the backbone of a story, but of course you're free to determine its outcome as we go.

Do I need to know about Shadowrun to participate? Nope. It will help you understand the lore and lingo, but a background in Shadowrun won't be necessary to follow the plot. Anything you need reference to should be found on the Shadowrun Wiki.

How many players are you looking to accept? I'd like to leave it open-ended for now, but it's been a long time since I GM'd anything on the site, so I'd rather things not get too chaotic. If it looks like we're overflowing, I'll put a hard cap on and update this post, but for now, anybody's welcome. Experience dictates that not everyone who applies will stick through for the long run anyway, so why kneecap myself?

When does this story take place on the timeline? For my own sanity, we'll be running in the 'present day' in standard lore. That is to say, post-2072. For ease's sake the RP will start in April 2075

Am I free to do anything with my character? Could I be any metatype? Awakened? A Technomancer? You can do whatever. There's no BP point limit or anything, and my GM style is hand-wavey. If you can justify something unusual, I'm open to it, but the more unusual, the better your justification should be. Also keep in mind that we're running in a city that doesn't place a lot of importance on tolerance. You can be a 9 foot troll, but don't expect doors, restaurants or cops to always accomodate you.

What's the approximate skill level of the team? Enough to be able to stand on your own two feet in the shadows, but not enough to actually want to do so. Each character should have their place in the team without dragging everyone down, but I don't want any badass heroes either. Rule of thumb is that if your character is so strong they could do these runs by themselves, then why wouldn't they just do that and keep all the money for themselves? As long as you've got strengths and weaknesses, your skill level is up to you.

Anything else I should keep in mind? Keep in mind that your team has been together for a while now. Your character should have been with the team for at least a month (so long enough to know the other members) or up to two years (if you're a founding member.) You can be from anywhere in or around UCAS, since the team travels, or you can be a foreigner if you want, but nobody should be from Louisiana, since part of the RP is being out of your element.

Anybody interested can go ahead and fill out a character sheet, and I'll evaluate them as I get time. Creativity with the CS is encouraged if you want, but please at least touch the bases below while you're doing it.

Real Name:
Alias:
Age:
Gender:
Metatype:
Specialization: (Samurai/Adept/Mage/Shaman/Technomancer/etc)
Appearance: (You can provide a supplementary picture if you want, but I'd like a written synopsis first and foremost.)
Personality:
Bio: (A couple of paragraphs here. Not looking for a novel, but enough to root your character in the world, please.)
Cyberware/Bioware: (Essence will play a role here, so be wary of loading yourself up too much.)
Loadout: (Everything you brought with you goes here. Guns, armor, decks, tools, etc. If your character has a vehicle, put it here too.)
Opinion of teammates: (As new characters are accepted, please remark on what your character thinks of them. For new applicants, leave this field blank until there's a team to comment on.)

I'll have to update Traction's profile now that we're post Crash 2.0. I am looking forward to a Wireless Matrix though. Opens up so many possibilities.

The one downside: Now I have to call her a Hacker rather than a Decker. :(

Well to be fair they still use decks, so Traction might just be irritated with all the kids calling themselves 'hackers'.

One question I have to ask though, are we drawing more inspiration from 4th or 5th edition. I only ask because I have a mystic adept, who uses a bit of summoning and alchemy, that I've been dying to play. He really focuses on the adept side of things and I don't want to go handing out preparations if you'd rather avoid them.

It's fifth edition, which began on the 9th of January, and it is currently sometime in April. In regards to Deckers/Hackers, it looks like we're both right. Seems like it's a bit of an issue in-universe.

Guess I'll jump ship since that other thread's going nowhere in a hurry. Will post CS in a bit.

Dibs on being the obligatory 'Troll Muscle.' Planning on going the route of a Cyclops metatype just to make depth perception a sore spot for her.

******EDIT*******

What do you folks think sounds better for a core concept? Physical Adept Simsense Junkie or Street samurai Cyberphile?

Scratch all that, I had the best idea for a physical adept while I was out today. I'll have her invert the stereotype of being a mystical martial artist and instead be an unorthodox gunslinger. I rescind my dibs on being the resident troll/team muscle.

I will say for the record that I'm still learning 5e myself. So if you're not the most up to date person on that I ain't gonna be the one judging you.

I'm out with my brother for a bit today, whom I haven't seen in like two years, but after I get back I should be able to get my character up and running, and I'll be able to take a look at everybody's characters much sooner.

I can say that Cath looks good though.

The New Matrix is hellishly more complex than the old one. I'm still reading stuff about how it operates, but I'll be prepared to edit Traction's profile by the end of the day,

Well it looks like the magic angel should be pretty well covered. So I'm just tweaking an old rigger of mine that will work perfectly here, that and I really, really like playing riggers. I'll have the CS finished tomorrow after work.

Hey Kraux, what is your expected post time frame? I'm interested, but my life is very chaotic at the moment (I can PM the specifics if you'd like) and I do not want to get involved if I cannot meet your expectations.

I can post about 2 times a week. Sometimes, I can post more, but 2 shouldn't be an issue.

I'd be looking to do an ork or troll ANTI-face. Shoots first, quick to make an inappropriate comment, but worth his metaphorical and literal weight when it comes down to a firefight. However, I am more than willing to take any role if it helps round the group out. I also have no issues running multiple chars (I love killing my own chars) and NPCs.

Let me know, either here or via PM please.

Domo chum.

For a general time frame, 2 times a week is great. I'd expect people to post once a week or so at least. I've had a lot of trouble in other RPs with everyone prioritizing RL stuff to an absurd degree (And that is fine. If you have life stuff going on, you should absolutely prioritize that.) But if you can't take 20 minutes to post once every seven days, then you might have the wrong hobby, y'know? I don't really want to hard-enforce that rule, but if I don't start strict, it'll just be chaos in the future during college finals week (which, as I understand, is every week? I dunno. I don't get school.)

Also, I'll be waiting for a few characters to enter the fray before posting my own. I could bring her over from the other shadowrun thread, but if somebody wants to assume those roles, I want them to be free to do so, and I'll fill in the gaps. What with being the GM now and having to play NPCs, I'd like to make my character somebody who can advance the plot when the group needs direction, and my old character isn't necessarily suitable for that. Looking forward to seeing what folks come up with.

I know. I've ran a few RPs, and I know that usually once RPs start, there is that initial frenzy. I find a lot of...less devoted RPers tend to bail after that initial frenzied pace isn't sustained.

Sounds great.

Any particular role you'd like me to fill at this time, or should I go with the loud mouth, crude, first-to-throw-the-punch, over-sized meta?

As John Cusack so eloquently put it in the movie High Fidelity. "...I've been listening to my gut since I was 14 years old, and frankly speaking, I've come to the conclusion that my guts have shit for brains."

Not with the intention of rushing anybody, but in the interest of keeping a steady pace, I'd appreciate it if folks could try to get their character sheets submitted within a week so we can get booted up.

I have time, so expect Traction's fully editted fifth-edition wireless matrix profile to be up tomorrow. As an added note, I've removed the Rigging Aspects of her prior build in order to emphasize her Matrix abilities further, since the Wireless Matrix provides a lot more material to work with than the old one.

Since it looks like we've got more of a small group, I spose I don't mind you throwing something up Az. I can understand chomping at the bit, I'm a bit eager to go myself. Never heard of doing something like that but there's a first for everything~
