Hey there. Y'all know me, I'm Corporal Lance, and here we're going to be presenting a little Interest Check for Fire Emblem. I'll keep things in brief, but I'll outline things a tad.

This game is going to be based within the Fire Emblem world of Elibe, using a simple stat and custom class system that's really more for balance and role identification than anything else. I'm going to be working with @Penultimate_Pi and @JinxLynx to bring this all to the table. More so them than me, because I'm normally not able to post anything more than once a week. If you like Fire Emblem or light medieval fantasy in general, this game is for you. If you also like that feeling of accomplishment that comes with stat progression, then this game is also for you. However, the game will be more about RP than anything else and we're looking to have a group of people to share that story with.

What do you need to know about Fire Emblem to enjoy this game? If you've played any of the games, any at all, then you're set. We won't be going too in-depth or borrowing too heavily from any one game, and the plot will be an original one. Will you need to break out the dice and calculator? No you will not, we're aiming to keep the mechanics of this game simple to keep roleplay as roleplay instead of math class, and encourage custom classes though some examples will be provided. Can you have fries with that shake? Yes. Yes you certainly can. So let's cover the basics, shall we? I'll be going over the rules for play, the game mechanics, and examples of classes to get everyone started. Story and situation will follow, but will be listed here as a placeholder in the meantime. Group size will be determined and people will be accepted when we know what we can handle, but for right now it's up in the air. Casual level, here we go.

I would like to thank both @Penultimate_Pi and @Jinxlynx for helping me put this together... or me helping them put this together and then posting this. Pi came up with the neat little story hook you have there and plotted out a good amount of story, made up the Character Skeleton, and fine tuned the mechanics. I came up with the Class Creation system and a good amount of the mechanics, the Weapons portion, and wrote up and formatted a good amount of this. Jinxlynx came up with the badass name and helped us fine-tune things with suggestions, and all of us pitched in as a group effort with everything else.

Currently we're deliberating who's taking that main GM slot, but in the meantime we're accepting characters! Lessee whatcha got!
1x Thank Thank

Hmm, question, with the class/character creation, do all stats start at E and we have 14 as a Beorc/Laguz (15 with only one weapon skill) to spend, or is it we have to buy the E ranks in every stat, leaving us with 9 (10 with only one weapon skill)?

@Eisenhorn ...Technically, yes, you do have to buy the E ranks. Kind of a roundabout way of putting it, but we decided it balances better and prevents anyone from being completely anemic from any one stat (as an F rank would indicate you had no power in that stat whatsoever).

@Penultimate_Pi Alright, it helps me figure out how the stats would turn out. Much obliged.

Oh, I wanted to ask, how many characters can we have? Other FE RPs I have been in seem to do better with two per person. There is a slight flaw in the class creation, you said to put only two weapon profitancys but there are classes with three weapons, such as Great Knight and Dread Fighter, who also have a "Class Feature." There is another flaw. In the class creation, you only list four stats but under the CS there are five. If five it what you are going with, then we will need more stat points to start with, 14 is to few for five stats.

Assuming that you only took 1 weapon proficiency, you can get at least C ranks in each stat, which should be sufficient for early on. For the same reasoning, we will likely not start as an "advanced" class such as the Great Knight or Dread Fighter so that we aren't mowing down the enemy forces single handedly. Continuing on, our characters will get stronger and will be able to learn further proficiencies and skills.

Name: Calev Shaeld

Race: Beorc

Age: 34

Appearance:

Class:
- Hoplite -
A well rounded defender that wields a lance and their ever present shield to prove themselves as some of the hardiest troops on the field, these foot soldiers truly shine when they are backed up by, and fight alongside, allies.

Proficient In: Lance

Features:
- Defensive Formation -
Gains an additional rank in Constitution, and performs increasingly better when working alongside brothers and sisters in arms, losing offensive power and movement points while gaining in defensive power and resistances when working alongside allies.

Stats

Strength - C
Agility - C
Constitution - C
Mentality - C
Skill - C

Inventory: Iron Lance

Personality:
Calev Shaeld is a humble man, and would never dare brag nor boast about his skill or talent, but operates with a focused clarity of mind on one goal. Improving himself, physically and mentally. From improving his lance techniques to studying the tactics and methods of heroes, and villains, long past, the man spends almost every waking moment bettering himself and preparing for the next test of his skills, or proving himself once more. He tends to see people for who they are, regardless of rumor and opinion, and will accept the aid of just about any man or woman, of any race or creed. Anyone can make themselves better, and he would be the last man to ever try and stop them and has even offered to others, in the past, to give a hand in training and preparation in whatever their next endeavor might be. Just so long as it does not prevent him from bettering himself somehow.

Biography:
Calev Shaeld knows not who his parents were, nor would it really matter to the man if you would ask him of the matter today. It is an old, well healed wound, being an orphan with no idea who one's parent are, and not something he tends to discuss, nor enjoys doing so. As long as he could remember he has been either attending other soldiers, or acting as one himself, and was part of a company of mercenaries that specialized in taking a piece of land no one else could, and not letting anyone have it unless they were willing to pay dearly in blood. Knights and other Hoplites, the mercenary company being one of the few who used such men trained as such, made up their rank and file. The company master was led by a disgraced General who still aimed to prove himself and expected the absolute best out of every man and woman within the company. The infantry company had a nick name they were proud of, the Iron Brigade, and even their youngest and rawest recruits took pride in the name, alongside the fact the company had a tendency to stand against dictators and mad kings, its long history full of battles where they would nearly be wiped out holding the line to save one last village, one more important person, or that last vital supply caravan. Calev Shaeld would spend his life in the ranks of the mercenary company, working up the ranks and skill from being the attendant of a knight and bearing the crimson battle standard of the Iron Brigade to holding his own in the battle lines, shoulder to shoulder in a defensive position or taking an impossible position. The Iron Brigade would deliver, and until detached, Calev Shaeld would deliver right alongside of them. The Iron Brigade, as soon as word spread of the mad attacks in search of the Fire Emblem, the General ordered the march, they would park themselves in the path of the greatest military in the world and buy the poor sods they found themselves protecting as long as possible to escape or complete their task.

Additional Info: Calev is the most likely to overly strain his limits working too hard at a task.

Great to see we already have players drawing up characters for this! Before we go any further, however, there are a couple things we neglected to mention in the top post:

Firstly, where our player characters fit within the plot: the players would all be involved in or traveling with a sort of mercenary band that happens to get caught up in the conflict over the hunt for the Fire Emblem. Whether you decide to fight back against the encroaching army, or attempt to flee and fend for yourselves, this band will ultimately orchestrate a turning point in the new war. This is the primary idea, but it is subject to change before the RP launches proper, if enough players agree to a new idea.

Secondly, for plot reasons, we will only be accepting one (1!) character whom is a Manakete with a Dragonstone. After this character is reserved and made, any other Manakete characters that players choose to make cannot possess a Dragonstone (though they are still able to wield them should they ever find one or borrow one). In addition, if you are creating a Manakete character, please PM one of our current planners (@Penultimate_Pi and @Corporal Lance), as it will be necessary in order to explain what Manaketes are even doing in the human world and to create a biography that reflects that.

Thirdly, to answer a question from @Crimson Raven, multiple characters will be allowed if you so choose. However, each player should only start with one character; all secondary characters will be introduced and recruited to the party as progress is made through the RP, in true Fire Emblem fashion. This acts not only as a way of providing more buildup and power to the RP as it progresses, but can justify a character being a more powerful class if they join much later on. (Do note that 'promoted' level characters who join before everyone else would promote will NOT receive a promotion.)

Fourthly, finally, and unrelated to the above: @Eisenhorn, your appearance picture isn't working. Try uploading to Imgur.

What would the rules be on half-races? Is there any sort of tension between the races that would make them less likely to exist? Would we still have to inform you if we were making a half-manakete?

@Sagittarius Oh, right...

The majority of Beorcs dislike Laguz under a combination of a racial superiority complex and a false belief that the Laguz were giving in to the dragons by trying to harness their power. Beorc-Laguz hybrids are existent, just as some Beorc-Laguz settlements and relations are, but all are rare and kept secretive from both races.
Such hybrids are known as Branded; they look mostly like Beorc, except for a certain birthmark on their body unique to them. They cannot shift forms like Laguz can, but may bear certain Laguz traits that Beorc do not, such as heightened senses, abnormally high aptitude, or some special technique (reflected in one of your features). Branded function as Beorc in gaining stats and proficiency (via promotion), but gain class features like a Laguz (per the end of each Act, independent of their class).

As of right now, no half-Manaketes could possibly exist, in terms of the active story, and if any were made in the course of the story, they certainly would not become mature enough to matter. If you must know, however, such hybrids are ultimately akin to Branded (in that they gain a certain mark on their body and some advanced trait), but they will live being even more racially prejudiced.
If that sounds underwhelming, remember: the Manaketes are dragons brought down to the power level of humans. Their blood wouldn't have any particularly special power to pass down. And no, it wouldn't make them resonant to a Dragonstone, either.

I'm afraid I'm going to need some help with the cost for skill ranks. So getting to D rank should cost a total of 2 points. C a total of 5 points. B a total of 9 points. A a total of 14 points and finally S with a total of 20 points. Yes? And does having only 1 weapon give you an extra point, As in 14->15 points? Or an extra rank, As in 14 points, and 1 rank up?

@Eklispe No, every skill rank should cost 1 point to advance. E-rank is 1 point put in a stat, D-rank is 2 points in a stat, C-rank is 3 points invested, and so on. Forfeiting a weapon proficiency for a rank gives you 1 point, and 1 point universally raises any rank by 1 degree.

I need to go ahead and add Branded to the Races at some point. Also agree with Pi that half-Manakete shouldn't be a thing. Anyone with a Manakete in mind go ahead and add both myself and Penultimate_Pi to the same message to enhance your chances of one of us seeing it.

@Crimson Raven, @Sagittarius hit the nail on the head. 14 points is plenty for the beginning, and the Great Knight and Dread Fighter-type classes are ultimately advanced classes anyway. You can either have that Class Feature or that extra weapon proficiency, but not both. Also, there are 5 skills listed under Class Creation: Strength, Constitution, Agility, Skill, and Mentality. Give it another read, I haven't modified the post in any way.

@AquaAzura I like the character concept, she sounds like she'd fit the "entitled noble" role pretty well! Lotta potential for character growth there. I'm going to go ahead and take the Class Feature for "increased damage reduction against weapon attacks at the cost of mobility" but ultimately different from the main stats.

@EisenhornPicture's still broken for me just in case you made a try at a fix. I also like him as well, Calev's got a real "team player" vibe going on. One issue, though: you've one skill rank too many. You can add a single skill rank or keep that cool Class Feature, but not both. This is just me, but I'd prefer it if you kept the Class Feature because it's pretty original and a neat concept. But that's up to you.

@EklispeSorry, but you're a little off. It's not the cost for increasing skill ranks, but what the skill ranks cost flat out. So that D would cost you two points, but to get to C won't cost you 3 more points, just 1 more point. 3 points is the total cost of a C rank. Like if you wanted to go from C to B, it'd cost you a grand total of 1 point. You're thing with the weapon is spot on, though, choosing to be proficient in only one weapon will give you 15 points to start over 14.

Everyone else, I'll be in and out for the next few weeks. I found out today that my brother's in the hospital with sepsis so I'm getting on a plane on Saturday to go visit him. It's not gonna be fun.

The thing that threw me off was

The ranks of stats will range from E -> S, with each rank costing a point scaling upward.
E=1, D=2, C=3, B=4, A=5, S=6

Not sure if you want to change the wording to make it more clear or my brain is over-complicating it but thanks for the response from the both of you.

I asked because I was thinking of a sibling pair. Would that be okay?

Another thing, what are the rule for starting weapons? Less then C rank? And, can we start with a 'named' weapon (i.e. Roy's Blade) or a unique weapon? I had an idea for a weapon that 'gains power as the wielder gets stronger' or something like that.
Hidden 9 yrs ago Post by Penultimate_Pi

@Crimson Raven Hmm. Sibling pair might be okay, depending on your choice of classes.

As for starting weapons, there aren't any real weapon rankings - weapon quality is divided by material (bronze, iron, steel, silver) and higher materials are more rare but better for enchantments. When I say to be reasonable, I ask what your character would probably have; iron is what you're most likely to have, maybe steel if you're really well off.

A unique or named weapon you start with can have a unique design, but won't function too much differently than a normal weapon of the same material aside from one minor trait (maybe it stays sharp better or is built for your specific fighting style - you would specify when you create it). A weapon that 'gains power as the user does' is probably just a little too much.
