Name: Kongetsune Jinichiro, or Jin for short

Personality: Impetuous and aloof, Jin is a kitsune that takes things as they come. He rarely makes plans, and when he does, he rarely follows them. He seizes opportunities as they present themselves without any thought of consequences. However, he is always true to his word. The one thing he will not do lightly is make promises, and he would never betray anyone fortunate (or unfortunate) enough to call him a friend.

Backstory: Even among litter of mischievous fox cubs, Jin was the most troublesome out of all of them. He knew his manners yet deliberately chose not to use them, he would always push the boundaries of what his mother permitted him to do, and nobody was off-limits for his pranks, not even his own family. He scoffed at the words of caution his elders gave him about choosing his battles carefully, yet somehow he survived his rambunctious childhood and lived to become a rambunctious adult.

Jin considers his greatest achievement his “assault” on Kado Village. Not content with messing with single passersby, Jin began an enormous campaign of pranks on the village, from tearing clothes that were hung out to dry, to putting thorns in people’s sandals, to putting villagers’ possessions in one another’s homes to make it appear they were stealing from one another. He only relented when the village elder concluded that they were cursed by an evil spirit – not far from the truth – and they made a monthly offering to appease it. Jin hasn’t gone back to check if they still make the offering, but he likes to brag about the incident. Now, he travels where the wind takes him, looking for something that can top that conquest.

Name: Akiko Tanaka (her surname is a joke – it means ‘dweller in the middle of the rice field’ referring to foxes being thought of as the messengers of Inari).

Personality: Akiko is a natural actress, capable of donning a metaphorical mask and play the part of anyone, from the most demure of ladies to the most brazen of the streetwalkers. In reality she is curious and friendly and seems to genuinely like people and find them fascinating although she can’t resist playing with them; like many kitsune she is something of a trickster and likes to tease people, but never in a cruel or malicious way. She loves roaming from one place to another and if in her human form likes company; many merchants or travelling samurai have been amazed by how ‘friendly’ the supposedly reserved lady is once they get to know her. She always keeps her promises and will always remember to pay a debt, be it for good or ill.

Backstory: Akiko was born in the countryside under the ruins of an abandoned house and grew up in the wilderness with only the rest of the litter as early playmates. She found humans fascinating and would often follow travellers, observing them from concealment in fox shape before feeling confident enough to make her first appearance as a human in a village when she was in her early adulthood. She spent some time learning about human society and developed a real delight in tricking people, particularly those who are less than honest themselves.

Most recently she posed as a former courtesan and started an affair with a rich merchant to steal a large part of his money, using an illusion to make it look as though his treasury remained intact for a while. She donated most of the money to the local temple and fled in fox shape. She’s spent a while in fox shape, and although she prefers it she’s currently travelling to town and is looking forward to spending a bit more time with humans.
