Welcome to Urenda

There are beautiful mountains surrounding the ruined city of Urenda. Covered with deciduous thickets interspersed with cliffs of hard stone, for miles around they are a source of inspiration and hope to visitors arriving by the High Road. The last stretch to Urenda is a raised section that cuts through a markedly floral valley next to one of the highest peaks of the Thutilan Mountain Range. Weary travelers from all around will come to this place to see the port city shining where the road disappeared on the horizon through a frame of vegetation rare to all but this last coast of Reath. They walk along a corridor of verdant life rare in the New World and smile; preceded by such a vibrant display against the dark turn of time, Urenda had to be all it promised and more. Travelers go forward, and at the end of the valley, the section of the High Road culminates in a plaza of sorts, bridging the narrow pass. The plaza overlooks the circular basin in which the city sits. Travelers can see the destroyed buildings and swatches of burnt housing that, just a mere two decades before, were bustling with lively activity. Acres of land, once tended, sprawl in patches around the city proper. 'Tis truly a sad sight, to see the active shadows on the fringes of the settlement. But, standing as a ray of hope, the center, raised tier of the city is brightly lit in the distance. Torches on every corner, even during the dismal day, burn without fail each hour. From this point, visitors see the Relanthon's Priests' outpost: a small yet securely built stone hut half hidden in the undergrowth. They'll help any who need in passing through the outskirts of the city, where shadows still linger. Desperation dulls the eyes of those in the outpost; any and all help is appreciated.

Whether one travels to the city with the help of the Priests or without, it is a rigorous trek through a maze plagued by stray shadows and the remnants of demon hoards that once waged war upon the helpless native mortals. Through the labor of the Priests or their own calloused hand, travelers drag themselves through biting pools of darkness incarnate and fight off all manner of beasts. At first, they trudge through the fields; they might meet some of the brave souls that stay to watch tentative crops of grain and corn. Then, they transition to the city proper. The wooden wall that once surrounded the city lays in ruins, assaulted by demons until it crumbled to dust. Bones and bricks litter the streets. The occasional demon or shadow scuttles across the way just out of sight, waiting for an opportunity, but smart enough not to strike alone. The area is not as treacherous as some of the neighboring regions, but it is obvious that these creatures only gather here because the mortals are congregating within. They rarely attack the travelers and visiting merchants, whether or not it is because their plans have been foiled one too many times, , or because they are biding their time, is unsure. They sit in the shadows and watch. They call their kin from their infernal home planes and inhabit the flimsy structures once belonging to the mortals. It will not be long before the threat is addressed.

The center tier of the city is physically higher from the rest due originally to geography then enhanced to make an effect. It rises close to ten feet above the area around it. The existing wall was built higher and has been embellished by the Priests; it is now a barrier of raw earth and constructional debris completely amputating the center tier from the hell below. It is notably tall, almost thrice a human man's height. Unattended visitors travel along it, hopefully not for too long, until they find one of three gates. There is a clear path along the wall and many others run through the outer city. Gates are the only way through or around the barrier; the space surrounding it has been demolished or excavated to prevent unwanted visitors, and the inside is regularly patrolled. The guards eye one's approach warily if they are alone; they have grown used to deception.

The streets of the 'city' are dreary and dull and it all seems like a gimmick in the face of grim odds. A sense of apathy permeates the air, but the set edge in the eyes and jaws of the Priests are a source of inspiration to keep the settlement going. A few caravans are displaying their wares; they sell all odds and ends, but none display food or drink. No doubt, the visitors have become accustomed to this; most hoard such provisions for themselves. On the main thoroughfare of the settlement, where the caravans set up kiosks, there is a cathedral and an adjacent inn; this is where most of the activity of the settlement occurs. It is there the priests gather, in a building once sacred to the Great Destroyer. Using their spells they create what food and water they can and ration it out to their inhabitants daily. Those in need can get a meal for free from the Priests, they rarely turn any away, although it is expected that one pays forth the kindness in some way. The inhabitants of Urenda mostly live spread throughout the center tier in estates once owned by nobility and wealthy merchants. A large family or group of families occupy one space, and then another group occupies an estate a few blocks down the line. Or, they are a part of one of the four agricultural groups that tend the fields. There are approximately one hundred 'permanent residents' of Urenda. The inn houses around ten to twelve travelers at a time. With so many gathered mortals in one place, Urenda is often unlike anything else a traveler has seen in the New World.

A few members of the community work in the tavern cooking what food the Priests' wrangle together and providing service for visitors. The interior is much nicer than one would expect. They have repaired and decorated it, and although there isn't a plethora of drink available, it is cozy and amiable. Many of the citizens spend meal times here, gathered together to feel the protection they feel is guaranteed by numbers. A few travelers often dot the scene. A tattered sign hangs on the wall near the bar, urging readers to drop by the cathedral and give what tithe they can afford. Things have never been easy for the Urendites, but as of late things have become... decidedly worse.

The early morning sun glowed quite dimly as it rose over the ruins of Reath. Urenda came to life slowly; first, a few priests and their accompaniments slunk out of the cathedral and through the southern gate at the brink of dawn, and then hours later once the sun had risen in full Reether emerged to prop open the inn's door, signaling it's readiness for visitors. Although it was never lively, there were usually at least a dozen people milling about the main road at this hour. The air was sticky and strange and carried the scent of something horrifyingly foreign and familiar both. Heads turned to the sky to see nothing but calm, gray skies with no indication of inclement weather... Which in and of itself was odd. One could count on almost daily rain on this part of the coast. A light breeze ruffled the capes of wanders in stead of the biting gales that often screamed through the basin that housed the city. The Priests have called for forward scouts to be sent out, though few have taken the call for fear what storm this calm has brought. Of course, they were also looking for people to scout the hoard growing in the ruins of the Coastal Observatory, and investigate the rumors of a hooded mortal figure appearing at night near the walls, and to go and report the recovery of the Hillick Farm...

It was a bit before high-sun that the visiting merchants shuffled out of the inn to set up their kiosks and displays. A larger dwarven woman sat, looking uninterested, next to a small caravan with a handful of crates that had been unloaded and used as a display. A few pieces of jewelry glittered from atop the boxes, and to the experience eye a few of them offered just more than decoration. But more than a few times had the stout merchant turned her head on those who offended her with low offers. Across the way and near the end of the road, out of eye- and ear-shot of the cathedral, a smarmy man in a long leather coat had set out and opened a few rucksacks containing salvaged arms and armor. He had nothing spectacular to his name, although his voice and proclamations would tell you otherwise. Urendites suspiciously cross the road before coming across him. Every now and then, Reether poked his head out, keeping an eye on the merchant who thought his only policing force was the elves in robes.

Inside the cathedral was just as lively as ever, dispite the condition outside. Initiates and apprentices scurried about, transporting food or supplies from cathedral to inn to house and back. A robed Priest can sometimes be seen, although they are rarely able to stop and talk. Briefly, High Priestess Eletha will appear near the grand staircase, but only to speak with whomever she needed, and whisk away almost as soon as she had come.

The School of Devastation passed into Urenda in the early morning. Some thirty-odd members strong, the overlarge party of walkers, riders and caravans remained unmolested for their entire trip toward the city proper, for no demon or Shadow in the area with any sense would try to attack such a large group, let alone one of such notable Arcane power and physical ability. Whilst the guards outside the walls were obviously perturbed at first, a series of quick checks upon all its members proved that none were demonic creatures in disguise, and they were allowed entrance for rest, recuperation, and a certain degree of civilised concourse. For several hours, a number of Artists clad in robes and armour of varying colours, styles, and degrees of defensiveness could be seen wandering the streets in search of new members, enjoying a rare drink in the tavern, or visiting the church for the sake of supplication and tithe; ultimately, however, the School thanked the city's members for the hospitality, and walked out again with great expectations of its newest student. All they left behind was a fairly short figure, in what could only be immensely stifling red armour, which waved its farewells to the school- however temporary they might be- until the convoy finally left visual range. Then, supplied and with an air of importance to its mission, the lone Artist strode into the tavern.

Magnus the Red

Ah, I do love the smell of alcohol in the middle of the day. 'tis truly the elixir of life. Only slightly behind water, of course, but then it has to have water in it, doesn't it? Without further ado, I drag myself up to a seat at the bar, pull my helmet from my head to rest it in my lap, and call to the innkeeper: 'A mug a y'r finest beer, if ye please!'

[So if Magnus' speech patterns don't coincide with those of any given subrace or larger gathering of dwarfkind... blame his parents.]

Aurora

From the wastes far north of the coastal town of Urenda a lonely figure appeared still covered in the remains of the snowstorm in the night. It was a lone girl that approached the spotting range of the town's watchtowers. The snow still clinging to her coat and hood slowly blowing off due to the strong wind coming from a westerly direction. Only after she got closer could the guard see the white fox trailing the girl. It was a most wondrous sight and one of much grace and beauty. Not that the girl heading for the gate even actively tried to evoke such feelings.

For those born before the Great Descent it bore a feeling of peace and solemnity of days long past. For some guards it might have looked like an angel that came to bless them.
But all these magical feelings quickly evaporated as the girl came close enough for the eye to see enough detail. It was just a young nomad girl clad in a self-made coat of white fur. Only the hood she still continued to mystify the figure approaching.

It was not long after, as the first morning rays of the dim sun pierced the whites of the heavens, that the girl stood in front of Urenda's gates.

"I ask to enter this city." A calm, but icy-cold voice was expelled from underneath the cover of her hood.
"What's your name, girl? Lift your hood, so we might see your face.", one of the guards at the gate replied dutifully.
Slowly and softly the girl pulled back her hood just far enough so that one could just see her face and a few strands of snow-white hair dancing in her face. "Aurora.", she simply stated, no emotions audible in her still icy voice.

The guards clearly overwhelmed not only by the beauty of that face, not because it was the unblemished face of a princess, but because it showed the hardships of her life in a way that still preserved the natural elfin beauty, but also because of her unwavering steadfastness in front of the guards which were used to girls of her apparent age being afraid of all kinds of soldiery.
Finally one of the guards managed to squeeze out a "Where are you from, what is you business here?".
For the first time in this short conversation emotions were visible on Aurora's face. A little smile formed on her face as she pointed northwards.
"I live in the wastes and I require material to build a house. I intend to sell some furs and buy tools here."

The satisfied guard opened the gate and let the girl walk in where she headed for the local inn. The fox, meanwhile, had crawled up her back and sat on her right shoulder now right above the giant backpack she wore.
Entering the inn she strode past all the early morning drinkers and sat on a stool of the bar setting down her giant backpack next to it. With a lovely smile, which would strike the hearts of the earlier guards who only saw her frozen mimics before, she petted the fox on her shoulder.

"Innkeep, I would like to stay overnight for two days in your noble establishment. Are any rooms free for a girl like me?", she requested calmly over the noise of the bar, her icy voice, however was enough to pierce through the calamity around her.

Said innkeeper nodded and motioned her to wait a while because of the customer situation in the inn.
The excess time she had, Aurora used to look around her doing a slight bow of her head to the dwarf next to her.
Still, it might have looks silly since the inn was warm enough, but Aurora still didn't fully remove her hood.

Tyrael Ialantha

Tyrael woke up from her slumber inside of the kiosk that she was residing in. Being greeted by some rays of the sun that managed to peek from behind the curtains that she had hung up before the windows of her room. Blinking a few times as she tried to get used to the light that was shining upon her skin. Eventually supporting herself on her arms so she was sitting up straight, looking around in a daze as if she had slept for days straight though that was not the truth which she knew all too well. Letting a sigh escape from her lips as she rubbed her eyes softly so she was not going to hurt herself for using too much force.

She then managed to get completely up, making up the bed before she turned towards her closet where she took out her clothes for the day. Going to the bathroom to wash up and got dressed as well so she did not have to do it later on. She was wearing a long light blue dress, white flat ballerina shoes and a fluffy scarf that was hanging on her shoulders to keep her warm as well. Once the hair piece was in her hair, she made her way down to the small kitchen in the back of the kiosk.

Others were assembled there already. Greeting each one of them with a gentle smile like she always did to them. It became almost automatically but it was also because she was happy to see them having fun with each other and to be healthy. Of course there were some people that got sick sometimes but they always got through it and always returned to the kiosk of where Tyrael was living. The building was not enormous but it was big enough to have a nice amount of people being there. It made it just that bit more cosy that one could enjoy. It was better that the place was not too big actually so Tyrael did not have to run around over the whole place. And on top of that, her orientation was not the best either as she could get easily lost if she did not know the lay-out of the building.

She took a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast and a glass of orange juice and sat down at the table besides the others and started talking with them about what had happened today. Some were telling stories about the past and some were talking about their families and how their children were growing up so fast. It was truly nice to hear for her.

"The smell..."

Alex raised a arm to her face in a bad attempt to cover her nose from the smell of the city, the fact that she had been here for a full week had done nothing to dull the dreadful scents that infested this place. "I am already missing the open road. At least the bar smells nicer, which is something I never thought I would say" She took the path that lead past the main gate, a good place to spot anyone that may be in a 'generous' mood was always merchants and the like just finishing their deliveries. However as she stood not far from the gate, swaying from side to side to try and see past the others coming out of the gate, something suddenly caught her eye and caused a grin to cross her lips.

"Aurora."

This was going to be a very interesting day it seemed. After seeing such sight Alex felt all need to ask money out of people drain out of her, and with a sigh she turned around and started to walk towards the tavern. Resting her hands on the back of her head she wondered how long it had been since she had seen something so unblemished within this filthy new world. Well hopefully someone she knew was at the bar so she could at least refill her water bag and whisky flask.

Bursting into the bar she almost ran into someone on her way in, some kind of priest, but she gave a curt bow and swayed a little, the door did always stick a little so drunks falling over on their way out was common. Once she took a look around a small grin crossed her lips as she noticed the crimson robes that stood out, the dwarf was likely a good one to get a happy drink out of him but... It was then that a chill overcame her as the same elf from before walked past her to the counter... "Heh, maybe fate?" The words were barely whispered out as she started to make her way up next to the elf.

"Aurora wasn't it? How about we share a drink? I would prefer if you buy it, but I-, I mean my good 'friend' Magnus here would be glad to pay for such beautiful women."

'...wait, what?'
I just returned a nod to the girl in the hood - somewhat pretty, I suppose, but obviously not my type, though perhaps somebody to jovially poke fun at later on - and since it's only been a short while, I've not even had the chance to receive that mug of beer before... er... "somebody" says something about my paying for her and the girl in the hood - "Aurora", as the other woman states. I'm pretty sure I've never met her in my- hang on, I'll say it out loud for their benefit.
'Ah'm pretteh sure ah've nev'r met ye in m'life, lass. Either a ye. How on Reath d'ye know mah name, and whah wouldy' assume ah'd be willin' to pay f'y'r alcohol fer yeh?'

Aurora's social anxiety reared its ugly face when she was directly addressed, but she quickly managed to suppress it. Her face stayed expressionless all that time, though, so there was no way anybody would have been able to tell, she told herself.
Her emotionless facade broke apart as a weak smile 'disturbed' her features.
"Don't worry, Sir Dwarf. I am not so rude that I might extort you of your hard earned money, just because I happen to be of the female sex."
She turned back the the elder woman who had approached her and seemed to want to scrounge from Aurora's purse a nice portion of wine or similar alcoholic beverages.
"My lady, as you might notice from my face, I am still a child, therefor I do not think it to be a grand idea for an elf of the meagre age of nineteen to drink alcoholic beverages. For an elf like me, I heard, I could as well be a toddler for another elf or a dwarf."
The female arctic fox jumped from her shoulder onto the bar counter looking at Aurora expecting some food. Now, for the first time today, Aurora actually smiled genuinely at the little fox.
"Are you hungry, Luna?"
When talking to her fox, her voice lost the usual icyness and became soft and lovely.
Aurora pulled out a strip of dried meat and fed it to the now very happy fox.
"Now be still and don't disturb the people here, okay?"
She smiled one last time as the fox unexpectedly, for a unknowing spectator, nodded and simply sat down on the counter staring at both the dwarf and the elder woman.
After Aurora returned her attention to the woman her icy voice reappeared again.
"As luck would have it, I still have some coins left from a trade I did a month ago. I do not understand the custom of buying somebody a drink, but if that is how it is done, I will oblige."
She shoved a few coins over the counter and motioned for the innkeeper to get the woman and the dwarf both an alcoholic beverage of their choosing. Herself she asked for just some apple juice.
"Ah, I have not asked for your names yet. I was told this is seen as rude, I apologize and would hereby ask you such. My name is Aurora, just Aurora."

Alex looked a little defeated as the dwarf did not play along, weren't young people meant to be brash and stupid when it came to sharing money? They were starting to get wiser it seemed, but it didn't matter in the end as the important thing was that she was not introduced and caulght their attention. "When you hear someone mention your name it is normally followed by 'yeah that dwarf in the bright crimson gear'" She smiled a little as she answered the dwarfs first question, it was not hard to get his name, heck it was not hard to get anyones name since you could even overhear it just like she did for Aurora.

Her attention was taken by the elf that addressed the dwarf about not parting with his money, a shame that she did not play along either but she had expected her to do so given her demeanor. She spoke in just a reserved way, almost like a noble of old but there was also a cold sharpness that followed her words.

"Not drinking because you are young? Heh, I didn't know people worried about such things anymore."

While the elf was speaking to her fox Alex leaned on her hand, her crimson eyes peering through her bangs to take in the interaction. She gladly accepted the offer of the elf to pay for a drink! Taking her chance she leaned over the counter and pointed at a very cheap small bottle of wine, which she took and uncorked with a gleeful smile. "Thanks Aurora. Though I already knew your name too. You may call me Alex." With a small raise of the bottle as a cheers she took a good gulp of the fruity, and rather watery, wine.

'...no, s'r'sly, how'd ye figure out mah name, lady?' I ask the older woman, now slightly annoyed. I'd normally be starting to jab the both of them by this point, but I'm actually concerned about this right now. 'Ah haven' exactly spoken much t'anyone 'ere yet, an' ah cer'ainly haven' been goin' round tellin' ev'ryone "'ey, ah'm Magnus the Red, nice t'meet ye". Also, just'n case ye didn' notice, there were a lot a people goin' round in brightly-coloured gear earlier. 'm pretty sure I'm not that special right now, other than that ah'm the only person in that particul'r group who stuck around. So out with it: where'd'y' hear about me?'

Curiously Aurora stared at both the woman named Alex and the Dwarf Magnus. With her childish curiosity and honesty, she clearly interrupted the conversation that was currently going on without actually realizing it.
"If I may inquire, you Sir The Red and you Miss Alex, both of you have different kinds of speaking. Do all humans speak like Miss Alex does and do all dwarfs talk like Sir The Red does? And how does one acquire such language?"
Looking from the woman to the dwarf she tilted her head. Strangely enough, Luna, the fox, did exactly as Aurora did, tilting her head and turning it from Alex to Magnus at the same time as Aurora did.

'Ah... don' think that has anythin' ta do wit' the situation at hand, lass,' I say in a slightly confused tone. 'Since yer askin' politely, diff'ren' people speak diff'ren'ly dependin' on many diff'ren' factors, so no, but ah think we should get back ta how ye learned mah name, miss... Alex, was it?'

Alex was enjoying her wine and was ignoring the dwarfs pressuring questions on how she had obtained his name, but she was forced to stop when Aurora asked if all humans talked like her or if it was the same for the dwarf, thankfully he answered first but she made sure to back it up. "Aye, what he says is true. However these factors of change also include race, with exceptions." She was about to go back to drinking but stopped just short to continue "Besides I did used to talk like you Aurora, though now I'm hermit so I found no need to do so any longer, not many beggers couldn't understand me ya see?"

With a small chuckle she then looked towards the dwarf, her face still looking nice and relaxed though her tone had a hint of annoyance. "At the gate people are required to give them names before entering and then there are things like debt, freinds, family, merchants you want to get along with, rumors, your signature and many other things." With that she took a big swig of the bottle, giving off a happy sigh and changing her gaze to the fox, though she still talked to Magnus. "As I said before finding out a name is trivial and I may have used one or more of those methods. Now please stop asking, your making the drink taste bad." She smiled to the fox and wiggled her fingers on the counter to try and catch its attention. She was always one to get along with animals no matter what, but given what she was she did not find that strange.

...ah. I'd forgotten about the whole "giving your name at the entrance". Though since I've spent the past decade or so of my life with the School of Devastation, the only thing that really applies there would be my signature in the entrance book - so far as I'm aware, no debt, family, merchantry or rumors have been associated with me in all that time, and as far as I'm aware, Artists tend not to talk to people outside the School about their close relationships. Though maybe that's just me. There really aren't that many of us around anyway, so that's not overly difficult, I imagine.
But enough of being concerned about where she got my name from. Time to start prodding. Putting on a light smirk, I quickly and jovially say 'Oh, tha' was me makin' the drink taste bad? Yer sure it were'n' yer confrontational attitude about the subject in question, lass? 'cause ah'm pretty sure it was either tha' or yer advancin' age which ruined yer booze.'

Rexton "Rex" Briar

Rexton happily strolled through the streets, passing buy all the merchants that are trying to sell their wares. None of them ever paid much attention to him, but that was by design. He was good at reducing his presence and, at times like these, it was a very good trait to have outside of combat. He turned his head to look back down the street and saw multiple merchants walk out and practically drag people to their kiosks. Rexton felt saddened by those people. They all wreaked of desperation and seem to have lost sight of some of the more simpler things in life, like customer service. Rexton shook his head, turned away, and kept on walking down the street towards the local bar. He enjoyed the occasional drink at the bar to calm his nerves after a stressful day of hunting outside of the city walls. Since a lot of the wildlife has been corrupted or devoured, it has become increasingly harder to find suitable prey to hunt and eat. After a few more minutes of walking, Rexton finally reached the bar.

The first sight when he opened to door was three interesting people sitting at the bar. He watched the three as he walked up to the bar. He noticed that the women with red eyes, and could sense that she was a lycan. He had noticed her before, walking through the city, but had never bothered to approach her. The two next to her he had never seen before. One was a dwarf in crimson armor and the other was what looked like a young elf with her pet fox. "A lycan, an elf, and a dwarf walk into a bar. Heh, sounds like the start of a bad joke," he said to himself with a smile as he took a seat next to the crimson dwarf. "Hey, barkeep! Surprise me today." He said placing a few coins onto the bar top.

"Hey! Rexton, I've been waiting for you to say that," The barkeep responded with a smile. He then walked into the back of his station and returned a few moments later with a glass of a mystery liquid. "I made this just for you, bud." He said with a playfully wicked grin.

Rexton gave him a look of confusion and excitement. "I don't know what you did, but you know that won't scare me," He said with his own grin. He picked up the glass and took a large swig of it, and almost instantly spit it out to his right, "Holy carp! That's disgusting man! What did you put in that thing?" He yelled at the barkeep.

"Oh, I figured you would like it. It's a special blend of vodka and some old fish oil I found in the back of my inventory." The barkeep said holding his chin as to look confused on why one of his most beloved customers didn't like it.

"Fish oil! Come on man, that's a disaster waiting to happen and you know it! Go get me a real drink!" Rexton continued to yell at the barkeep, but his serious face had split into of a large grin. He like it when people were still able to show a bit of humor amidst the apocalypse, and he couldn't stay mad. He watched the barkeep laugh it off and walk off in order to get him a new drink. Rexton then re-positioned himself in his stool in order to face the dwarf and others. "Can you believe some people?" He motioned towards the barkeep, "The names Rexton, but feel free to call me Rex. What are you guys talkin' about?"

“Smith… what dost thou forge?”

Orodyuke paused, and peered into the darkness that surrounded him. The whisper had come from a figure hanging just on the edge of his vision, its form obscured by the blackness that the light from the soft embers of his forge failed to reach. “A future” he called out automatically, before returning attentively to his work, the resonating clang of his hammer echoing into the void.
He heard more than saw, the figure slowly and with light footsteps make its way around the pool of light. He ignored it, focusing on his task, even as he felt it peering over his shoulder and examining his handiwork.

“But dear Smith” it chuckled, right in his ear. “You have no materials! Will you ask for them to be granted to you?”

Orodyuke’s grip tightened on his hammer, but he kept working. “No.” he grunted between strikes “mortals must craft the future by their own strength.”

Another chuckle. “You will not get so far… with such poor quality goods.”

“I have faith.”

“Faith?” The voice said incredulously, and now it appeared to grow angry. “FAITH?” it roared, and so too did many others, as did the fires of the forge as they flared to life and grew tenfold into a pillar of towering flame, banishing the darkness and casting nightmarish, flickering shadows onto the tangled masses of corpses that now lay revealed; broken, bloodied and mutilated, around the forge.

“THIS is the result of your faith.” the voices chorused.

Bathed in crimson light, the bodies of Orodyuke’s kin, those who had looked up to and depended on him, stared accusingly with glazed eyes. Orodyuke trembled before them, and tears appeared in his ancient eyes. “I was trying to save you.”

“Your excuses mean nothing to us. We believed in you, and you led us to our deaths. MURDERER.”

Orodyuke covered his ears and curled into a ball as the apparitions tormented him. Then slowly, deliberately, he picked himself up and resumed pounding on the anvil, even as the ghosts continued to howl their anguish at him. It took some time, but their tumult gradually diminished, and the raging fire slowly shrank down, growing quiet.

“You insist on trying then?” they said finally.

“Yes.”

“Why? We will not forgive you regardless.”

“Justice. For all of you. I will force Kurladt to see the truth.”

“You would bring a god to justice with this… paltry thing? How?” they whispered, the flames dwindling even more. “The gods ARE justice… they have never been held accountable. And the mortal whose hands are stained… is you.”

The fire extinguished itself completely, leaving Orodyuke alone in the dark.

“How?” they whispered to him.

“How?”

It was with heavy footfalls and stiff joints that Orodyuke dragged himself down the Inn’s rickety stairs and plonked himself down on a stool by the bar, feeling drained. He had hoped to get a better night’s sleep once he was inside the city. But Urenda’s walls could do nothing to protect him from the wolves inside his head. It was only his second day off the road, but the unsettling tricks his imagination was playing on him only convinced him further that he could not delay. Today he must speak with the priests.

But first…

The old dwarf looked up from the counter. “Barkeep. I could really use a stiff drink.”

Aurora nodded softly at both Alex' and Magnus' explanation. There was so much that she didn't know a thing about and she slowly got the feeling, she should change that and learn about the world, but, unlike regular humans, she had the time to do that without focusing just on knowledge.
Luna looked at her asking if she was allowed to be touched by Alex. Since Aurora had a pretty good feeling about that woman, she allowed it and the white fox tapped to the wriggling fingers and snuggled them.
But a short while later a guy entered the inn who made her entire world collapse. Or, well, the view of herself, at least.
He had two wolf ears on top of his head and also carried a wolf tail openly.
She first spotted him when he had turned around to talk with Magnus and in shock she rapidly stood up so fast that the chair she sat on slipped to the ground with great noise. At the same time the wind created by her bashful standing up lifted the hood of her head uncovering the top of her head.
Among the brilliantly white, long hair, which also waved in the breeze, two white furred fox ears were revealed.
As the realization hit her, panic started to become visible in her eyes.
"No..."

Alex smiled gleefully as the fox moved up to rub against her fingers, the softness of the little ones fur was amazing and even caused her to ignore the dwarfs little stab at her attitude and age, for a moment that is. "Just because I retain my beauty doesn't mean you should be jealous, just because all dwarfs look middle aged before they even reach adulthood." She didn't mention anything about her attitude, mainly because he could have been right on that fact. Still she just went back to enjoying the company of the fox for the time being, making sure to stroke its ears as she enjoyed her wine.

A short while later and Alex sensed a familiar presence, another of animal blood who she had noticed within the streets so she always suspected he was not dangerous, not like some of their more feral brethren. However it seemed Aurora did not share such feelings as panic set in! Extending her leg Alex caught the chair before it hit the ground, and that was all she intended until she peered up and heard a whispered 'no' come from the fox eared elves lips. Within but a moment Alex let go of the bottle of wine, having it reston her knee, and swiftly moved Aurora's hood back over her head, making sure to keep her hand there and pet the girl to try and calm her down.

She had likely moved fast enough that anyone not paying attention missed it, but those at the counter with them were sure to notice. "Shh, sit down young one." For a moment Alex sounded warm and rather noble in her speech as she tried to quit down the girl, her leg pulling the stool back up and her other free hand coming away from the fox to pick up and set the bottle of wine on the counter. "Hes not going to harm you, he is only a puppy." She chuckled, back to her rough way of speaking, though it was clear she was avoiding the subject of her ears until she had calmed down. That did not stop her from turning to Rex with a blank expression "Look at that, you scared the poor girl."

...well that was a thing that just happened. The whole thing with "Rex" deliberately acting up over a drink, that is, not the other thing with that one girl's ears being fox ears. I've seen weirder stuff than that, but Rexton... I think he and I might do well together. Deliberately shrugging at the sight of the girl's ears in a nonplussed manner, and ignoring the sourpuss' comment about my own appearance on the grounds that she actually didn't comment on my other statement, thus proving me right on all accounts, I turn to Rex with a wide grin on my face. 'Well, actually, we were jus' talkin' 'bout you 'n' yer tendency ta accept mysterious drinks from untrus'worthy people. Still, ah know who ta come to nex' time ah feel like prankin' somebody wit' some piss in a mug, though ah'm willin' ta bet ye'd chug that either way, wouldn' ye?'

Reether rarely awoke any earlier than high-sun. It was too often he was up late the night before, whether it be from rowdy patrons, horrible demon attacks, or some sort of task for the Priests. It was about an hour after high-sun that he was roused. Bella's soft hand on his shoulder shook him awake, and soon he was shooing her away, ignoring what she was saying for just a bit of morning peace, and rose with a loud groan. He stood in the closet that they had turned into his room, as all but the handful of patron rooms on the floor above had been turned to storage, and fought with a pair of trousers to dress himself. After a few moments of cursing and flailing the middle-aged man emerged from his room with disheveled hair into the staff hall, and then went into the kitchen, where Bella had been waiting for him. He sat on a stool, a plate was placed in front of him, and he motioned for the girl to continue what she had tried to say before.

"One a' the Priests came by this mornin' -Reander? Reondo?, something like that- and said that we should be getting a cart full of wheat soon from the fields, one of the first from the Greenwood's farm this season, and we need to make some room for it." She rolled her eyes at his groan and kept on, "The Destructioners or whoever are officially not staying, so we can cancel the order to ready rooms for them... Which you hadn't heard since you slept all morning. Moving on, there's the meeting coming up in a week with the farmers... That's it. Oh, and Tori needs your help, apparently. Rex is at her section of the bar so maybe he has something for us? I dunno." The woman shrugged and moved on, after getting a glare at her rambling, going about her normal rounds to check on how lunch was turning out. Reether stood and put his plate in a bucket to be cleaned and swept out of the kitchen doors to behind the bar.

He immediately saw the group he would need to approach, and Tori rushing at him from their vicinity. He didn't like what he saw, due to three things; one, Tori looked perturbed, two, there was a pile of gold in her hand, and three, THERE WAS A DAMN ANIMAL WHERE PEOPLE WERE SUPPOSED TO EAT. Reether scowled, but reminded himself to calm down as the face he believed it belonged to -thanks to the matching ears- was completely unfamiliar. Tori approached him and started to almost ramble, "I-I've never seen so many new people at once! They're just throwing gold at me, and then there was an animal, and then Viv got to serve Rex and not me because I was trying to talk to Bella about it! And I think she took his money!" The girl, who he knew was very young and just as new, made Reether's eyes roll. He had stepped a bit closer, and noticed a whole dam bottle of his wines in one of their hands. His anger flared again.

"What have I said about serving full bottles?!" The girl's eyes widened, and she stooped a bit and looked at the floor.

"She... She took it herself and then they gave me gold." Reether growled and held out his hands, and the meager pile of gold fell from her own pale grasp. THAT WOULDN'T HAVE EVEN COVERED THE BOTTLE, he thought to himself in heated disappointment. He had never taught the girls real prices other than a glass or a mug, because they rarely needed to know. He shook his head. The problem with gold was that it held very little actual value now that there was no government to back it up. It was pretty and shiny, but pretty was useless at this point in time. It was not rare to find one that accepted gold, many of the traveling merchants still used it, but in Urenda they had almost no use for it. They could sometimes trade with it, but the people they traded with and the things they traded for would cost exorbitant amounts in gold's devalued state. And alcohol? Getting shitfaced was the new national pass-time in the apocalypse. Alcohol wasn't cheap, especially that which Reether couldn't brew himself. Like wine. Tori took a moment to relay what the members of the group had told her, and what she had gathered from their conversation.

"Get the good dwarf what he asked and a breakfast, I believe he should be more your speed." He nodded to a sullen looking blond fellow a few seats down. "But four patrons is nothing. Get used to it." He spoke firmly, but not particularly harshly. The girl opened her mouth to defend herself, but ultimately nodded and ducked off. With furrowed brows, Reether shoved the gold in his pockets. Normally, he'd return it, as someone's first meals in Urenda were often free as to entice the wanderers into staying and lending their hand or sword, but that bottle, in these times, was worth much more than a few lousy coins. Yes, people wanted the gold, but not as much as they wanted food. He made a note, however, to see how much Vivianne had taken from Rex, as most of his normal costs could be covered by the furs and meats he sometimes brought back to the city. At that point, he sighed and approached them. His demeanor most likely ended their conversations.

As soon as he was close enough, he shooed the damn long rat off his bar counter. In the same bending forward motion, he leaned in at the older woman and snatched the bottle off her knee. With a deep set, unquestionable glower, his eyes hard enough to cut granite, he said, "I'd appreciate it if you'd stay on THAT side of the counter. I do not take kindly to those who would blatantly take from me. If you want a drink, you ask me or one of the girls. We ain't deaf." His voice, again, was firm, but not outright hostile. He swirled the bottom of the picture and grunted; just as he thought, what they had paid had not been nearly enough for that much of the bottle. He didn't know if that was their doing or Tori's, however, and didn't dwell on it. A thought in the back of his mind noted that Eletha should know of such behavior, even if it was just brash showboating. His arm swung back and he replaced the bottle in it's spot by memory alone, turning his gaze directly at Aurora, not noticing or maybe not caring about the bit of distress on her face. "Animals DO NOT belong on my bar. Keep it on you, on a chair, on the floor, but not where people eat for the love of the light. That's just rude." he was shaking his head by the end of it, but his anger had also dissipated somewhat.

"Most of ya' look new here, so lemme tell ya some helpful bits." He crossed his arms as he addressed the group as a whole. "Don't try t' wave your gold 'round in here. Ya' didn't even afford what ya' took from that bottle, and that's just not how this works. If ya' want to eat, ya' need to work. Now, after your one meal you can waltz out, but if ya' stay and the Priests say you're alright, then ya' get fed. Simple as that." Reether had a strange dialect. He spoke with enough eloquence to be educated, but, now that he wasn't angry, it relaxed into a more casual inflection. "But excessive drinking, as in damn near a whole one of my best bottles, tha'll cost ya', but that cost is t' me. My girl Tori is new and messed things up a bit, so I won't go houndin' ya' over her mistake." As he spoke, he wiped down the counter where the fox had been walking. He finished and looked back to the elf with strange ears, "Tori tol' me you wanna' stay. What 'xactly ya' staying in town for?" he arched a brow at her, as her purpose really dictated whether or not she would have to discuss her stay with the Priests.

At that point, Viv returned the bar, carrying a mug with some concoction. He grabbed the girl's arm as she passed, and shot in her ear, "Never waste my alcohol on something someone will spit on the floor." He liked the lycan, as much as he liked any of the other hunters that occasionally brought him meat, but his tendency to ask for (and the girls' tendency to go along with it!) strange drinks was not kind to his limited stores. It was one thing to ask for something special every once in a while, but Reether had to keep many more things that patron satisfaction on his mind. He let go and she moved on; Viv was experienced enough not to let his reproach stain her pleasant features.

Tori shook her head as Reether walked away, and mocked a few of his words under her breath with a shaking head. Remembering what the dwarf had said before, she grabbed a bottle of dwarven fire-whiskey and filled the bottom of a wide-based glass with it. She placed it in front of him quietly, and grunted softly in case he hadn't been paying attention. She smiled at him, more at ease with one patron opposed to four. "Hello, sir dwarf!" She said cheerily, trying to lighten his mood, "You arrived yesterday, right? So I'm sure you've gotten the spiel!" She giggled a bit, and continued, "Can I get you some breakfast?" She didn't know his situation that well, but if Reether said to feed him, he must have some sort of plans.

Aurora was a bit shaken up as Alex put her hood back up and patted her. Unexpectedly it felt good to be patted and petted, maybe she finally understood what Luna felt when she petted her.
But her distraction was only short lived as the owner of the inn approached the guests and shooed off Luna from the counter. Of course, being a wild animal, Luna didn't take it very well. Climbing pack up onto Aurora's shoulders, she growled at the owner of the bar as Aurora herself stuttered a bit feeling helpless.

"I am sorry, sir. I did not know. Luna did not mean to dirty your counter. And concerning the cost of the bottle of alcoholic beverage, if the gold is not sufficient enough to cover the cost of the bottle, I am able to pay in furs."
She pointed to the backpack that was leaning on the counter which seemed impossibly big for her to carry it.
"I have high quality furs, such as ice bear furs and arctic wolf furs, as far as I've heard, very rare furs. I gathered them myself so I am able to assure you the fine quality of them. As for the reason for my stay in your abode is that I hope to acquire tools for building houses and tools for building and repairing those tools, so blacksmithing equipment. After over ten summers of migrating and nomadic life, I plan on settling down for a while, although gathering the furs brings a lot of value to my trade."

The hood slipped off again revealing her fox ears once again. This time, though, Aurora did not panic. Instead, she simply took off her long coat revealing long, slim, but trained legs clad in tights topped off with a plaid skirt from under which a white furred fox tail poked out. All clothes were made by herself, of course.

"If you do not mind, I would prefer not to have to cover my mutations up. Nevertheless I have heard that some priests might want to execute me as I am prove of everything wrong with this world. A mutation caused by the Creeping Death... that's what I am. If you still wish to harbour me, I would be honoured. If you do not wish my presence in your establishment, I understand and will follow your judgement immediately", her icy cold voice stated as she had her composure back into her own hands.
Still, her voice seemed a little hostile, although you might never really know, for her icy voice often didn't contain any emotions whatsoever.
