Now that everyone had come down, Evelynn started the relaively short walk back to the dining hall. It wasn't a bother really that Jade Fist had come so late, but it was just her being an impatient prick...like she usually was. "Damien?" she called out, an eerie smile upon her face. "I have impeccable manners. Tsk tsk, boy, you shouldn't go around calling people 'vampire witch'... they may want to eat you for being so rude!" She bared her top teeth a little bit, not in an animalistic way but just enough to show him her pointed fangs that were tinged with the smallest amount of red from the blood she was drinking.

"And Aegar, you are a dirty mind. Not that I'm objecting to that, of course." Evelynn winked at him and continued drinking her meal, holding it up for all of them to see. "This here is fine elf blood, from one that is probably relatively young. Every so often new volunteers come along, and they're usually humans who are seeking some type of thrill on Tenebra. And then, there are the curious elves that somehow end up giving a bit of their beautiful blood." She swirled the drink around her glass and paused for a bit. "It's very fragrant if you ask me. But it doesn't produce the same amount of endorphins as, say, demon blood. Demon blood is always the strongest, and many vampires like to get drunk off of it."

"Elves actually volunteer for blood donations? They rarely migrate over to Tenebra... it's too dark and baren here..." Summer said, surprising herself for speaking up.

"Some volunteer." Jade called out, "Others get volunteered."

"Like...as in a Punishment?"

"Not quite."

Evelynn turned around then, a completely disgusted look on her face. "I don't ever drink blood that has been taken by force. I'm a vampire, not a monster," she said coldly, then taking another sip from the glass. "And Summer, there are a few curious elves that come around. When they find out that the University holds a vampire, some of them volunteer to... provide a meal. For those of you that don't know, a vampire bite can be pleasurable to a degree. After all, the neck area is very sensitive, and the bloodloss can make a person feel a bit light-headed and up in the clouds."

Jade merely shook his head. He couldn't decide, between himself and Evelynn, who was more disgusted towards the other one.

The whole conversation had taken the time to get from the towers to the dining hall, and by the time they got there the hall was already buzzing with the excitement of the other students. Six long, retangular tables were set in an organized fashion around the hall, with a lengthy table at the front of the room. Amalia sat there with the rest of the staff, and there was even a spot on her right that was presumably saved for Evelynn.

"Ohhh, look there," the vampire pointed, "little nymph girl has already found your special table. I suggest you all run along now and join her!" With that, Evelynn left the group of Sages and went to her own seat at the front of the hall. Calixta was indeed seated at a circular table in the middle of the six tables, and she looked oddly out of place in a sea full of demons. Men oggled at her, women gossiped about her and the other entering Sages, but she kept her gaze forward and only looked back when she saw her approaching companions out of her peripheral vision.

Once the remaining Sages reached the center table, Summer sat next Calixta and Jade as she wanted to try to talk to people other than Damien and Ostel. Even though she knew that she wasn't expected to act in any form of a serving roll, Summer shifted uneasily as she tried her best to refrain from offering to pour people their drinks, which was all that was on the table.

"So... umm... Jade," Summer murmured, hoping that the elf to her left would not get mad at her for shortening his title, "I remember you saying you had freed elven slaves... was it... was it hard? To see your people beat and slaves to whatever whim their Master's had?"

"At first..." Jade replied in a hushed tone, "It was. But none of it was worse than what I had seen before."

"Worse than..." Summer motioned slightly towards him as if to ask what he went through as she tried to avoid drawing the attention to him in any way, "I know I got off lightly compared to what other slaves had to go through..." As she said this, her hand absently wandered to the scar on her right cheek.

"There exist... far, far worse forms of slavery than most people know." Jade said, "Even most elves are unaware of it. Slavery of the mind. Literally chaining one's soul to the wall. Not just exploitation... transformation."

Summer shifted uneasily in her seat, the way Jade spoke made her think that what he said was something he had experienced himself. The very thought of someone owning her soul did not sit well with her, she imagined that it was far worse than someone owning her body.

"I know it still goes on." Jade's voice fell into a whisper now, "And I hope you never have to see it."

Summer offered Jade a small smile, though it was more sad than anything, as she gently laid a hand on Jade's arm for a moment before setting it back into her lap. She wasn't very good at comforting people, but she wanted to show Jade that she wanted to be there for him, even if it was in a small way.

"I am sorry that you had to witness such things," she whispered to him, "No one should have to."

Jade turned his head ever so slightly. He didn't say anything, he just nodded. Summer could almost see his eyes hidden beneath his mask, yet... it still didn't look like he had any eyes at all. Summer didn't shy away from him even though the appearance surprised her slightly, she just gave him another smile.

"Thank you... for talking to me," she said, "Even though it seems to be something you don't like to remember."

Jade remained silent, yet content with the conversation. He turned his head away and waited patiently for... whatever food they were bringing.

Aegar was paying more attention to the surprising amount of students filling the hall than to the other mages and incidentally ended up sitting down in between Calixta and Damien. This situation was very new to him, as the only school he’d ever been to was the small-scale one back in his birth village. He figured now that he was here it was probably in his best interest to get to know the others a bit, even if just to make them less suspicious of him. To his right was Calixta, who he figured he’d leave alone for a bit longer, so he decided to turn towards the taller girl first out of curiosity. “Hey you. Summer, right? We hadn’t met yet, I’m Aegar. Are you from Zephyru? And is Summer your real name?”

Summer seemed startled that Aegar had decided to talk to her, but she managed to smile a bit as she shook her head. "No... I am not from Zephyru, I'm from Lucerna... and Summer is the only name I was given by Ostel so... I guess it is my real name...." She didn't seem to upset about telling Aegar the truth, and she wasn't, her tone was matter-of-fact without any form of resentment, "I believe you were originally from here yes?"

“Yes I am.” The possibility of her being a slave suddenly occurred to him once he noticed her Elvish features, which were initially drowned out by the much-more-obvious silver hair and purple eyes. He fell silent for a second as he thought back to the few encounters he’d had with the slave trade. Slavery existed on Tenebra as well, mostly practiced on a small scale by the hordes of outlaws that roamed the country side. Whatever slavery took place around the big cities was very underground, thus why Aegar had clashed with them only very rarely. If the stories were to be believed though, in Lucerna slavery was practiced in bright daylight, the very thought of which caused a surge of anger to well up from inside him. He quickly shook the thought out of his head to prevent himself from getting too worked up. “How long have you known Ostel?” He was tempted to ask her whether Ostel was considered her master, but decided against it with the human so close by.

"Um... about a month... I never interacted with the Grimward children as I was primarily a stable hand... since I do so well with animals. I... my first encounter... with the oldest.... it wasn't..." Summer trailed off for a moment before taking a deep breath and trying to steady her now shaking hands as one, once again, moved to her scared cheek, "It wasn't... a good meeting. Ostel... saved me..."

Aegar idly shook his head and let out an almost invisible sigh. A slave too, now? It’s like the Warlock really went out of her way to find the most ragtag band of misfits to fulfill her prophecy. “I’m sorry for whatever happened to you. Perhaps I shouldn’t have brought it up. Have you learned how to transform yet? You are a shifter, aren’t you?”

"That's what I am being told... but I'm 18 and I've never experienced a shift, from what I've heard Shifters have their first shift in their early years... I mean, maybe I'm late because elves age differently? I don't know. What about you? I mean, I've never seen a demon that looks like you... may I ask why it is you are so different?"

He frowned a bit in response to the question, not so much towards her as towards himself, but quickly wiped the frown away as to not scare her off. “I… don’t know, honestly. I was born this way.” It’s a question that had been bothering him his entire life. “I suppose all of us might have something special about them.” He made a subtle gesture towards the rest of the group. “Why else would we be here? I’m sure you’ll find out how to use your shifting sooner or later.”

Summer nodded her head, "None of us can help how we are born... we just have to be careful how we act I guess... and how we apply ourselves. I just hope that they didn't make a mistake bringing me here... I don't really have any experience with magic."

“Oh I have my doubts about some of their choices too.” he said, getting partially pulled into thought again. “We can only hope they were right. Only time will tell now.” he mumbled right before he found his eyes arbitrarily dwelling away from the Sages around him and towards a buxom demoness sitting a few seats away at the table of darkness.

Noticing where his eyes had gone, Summer fell silent and was surprised when food just seemed to appear on the table. Figuring the conversation was finished, she took a small amount of food and slowly began to eat as everyone's conversations rolled over her. It had been nice talking to Aegar and Jade, but she also wanted to talk to Calixta, though she wasn't sure how to go about it.

"Excuse me," the Sage of Water mumbled not a minute later as she shifted her tiny body more towards Summer. The demon made her nervous, and for the most part while he and Summer talked she had kept her gaze fixed toward Amalia. Then, trying to get her mind off of her proximity to him, she turned towards Summer and gave her a bright grin. "You know, I really do like the nickname 'Calla.' And I apologize for leaning this way. I have... mixed feelings towards his kind..." She whispered the last part very quietly, eyes wide with an unidentifiable emotion, but it was gone in a moment and she followed suit in grabbing a plateful of food-- plenty of fruits and vegetables, and a handful of various nuts.

"I understand," Summer said with a bright smile as the other female addressed her, "Oh... um... you like fruits and vegetables? Um.... maybe you should try this one?" Summer hesitantly offered Calixta a deep purple fruit, "This is... one of my favorites on the rare occasion that I got to eat fruit."

"I don't eat meat," the nymph responded, taking the purple fruit and placing it on her plate. The nymphs are immortal and have a deep respect for life. Many of them are on vegetarian diets, although I have eaten fish on an occasion or two. Please, do tell me more about the fruits. I may have Queen Raina start importing different foods to Nymphe!"

Summer couldn't help the radiant smile that spread across her face at how excited the Nymph before her seemed. "From the fruit I have head, they are all very sweet and juice, my favorite is Honey Dew... actually, it's that green diced up one right there. I was only allowed to have some on very rare occasions and even then it was usually a few days old... I've never had it fresh before."

"Fresh fruit is what I usually eat, so I'm sorry that you have never tasted any until now. I may have to take you to Nymphe one day so you, too, can go through all the gardens and orchirds to pick out whatever fruit you want to try!"

"You have gardens and orchirds of such things? That sounds wonderful! I would love to see such a place... it sounds like heaven.... underwater," Summer exclaimed as her smile stayed on her face.

The nymph laughed. "Magic keeps our home dry under the water. And yes, the best fruits are grown at the royal gardens near the palace. You would be an honored guest!" Calixta grinned very child-like, excited at the possibility of a friend coming to visit her home.

"I would like that very much Calla, we should do so after the fight is over... it would be... nice to see a friends home."

It was at that moment that Ostel came into the room, which prompted a fair number of the occupants to look in his direction. The Sage of Light was talking to to the big white wolf who trotted beside him, " ...is the last time I try to make sense of this castle Snow. How about next time you lead us to the food. Deal?" Snow barked and playfully ran around his human companion's legs.

Shaking his head with a sarcastic grin at Snow's antics, he then said absentmindedly, "Sorry I'm late, It's a damned maze in here!" He then realized the amount of people staring at him, which instinctively made him stop in his tracks. Usally when a large number of people were looking at him, it was because of something he did. A brief image of a number of such accounts flashed through his mind.

But before he could dwell on it further Jade Fist waved at him, "Take your time Ostel. I'll eat your food. I'm sure you won't mind."

Again the human shoke his head and the scenarios in his mind dispersed, followed soon by a wry grin, "No need to get yourself killed so soon my friend." He walking by and softly planting a fist on Jade Fist's shoulders before heading over to grab what looked the most delicious. He settled for what seemed to be a hearty well cooked cut of chicken, steamed ham, buttered bread and he finished by grabbing a flagon of honeyed mead to wash it down.

With a boyish grin the Sage of Light sat took his place and sat in the only available seat left at the circular table, between the Sapiens Terrae and Sapiens Ignis.. He gave his cooked ham to Snow on a separate plate on the ground, which his canine companion gladly dug into.

He nodded to Damien, "Hope I did not miss much."

The Sage of Fire shoke his head, "Nope, glad you could make it. Was wondering were you went actually."

Ostel shrugged his shoulders, "I was exploring, and figured I'd get a lay of the land. But Gods! This place is really easy to get lost in."

"Maybe you should ask someone for a map then." Jade called out, "I'm sure a handful of students here get lost occasionally."

He shoveled a piece of turkey into his mouth and said with his mouth half-full, "Perhaps another day I might do just that Jade." Ostel then looked across the table and smiled at the fact that Summer was speaking to other people, but then his smile went away as his gaze focused on the cloaked figure the Sapientis Ventus was speaking to.

He did a quick head count around the table. Beside him sat the lycan known as Damien and formidable Jade Fist, each being the Sages of Earth and Fire. Then across the table he counted the innocent Summer and the friendly Calixta as the Sages of Wind and Water.

So then that only left ... Sapiens Tenebrae. Ostel's eyes quickly focused on the one he assumed was the Sage of Darkness.

He was dark-skinned and matched the cloak he wore, though the cowl of the coat was drawn back and his white long hair seemingly shined in the candlelight. From his skull protruded two horns about three or more inches tall, the tell tale signs of the demon race. His eyes narrowed on the suspected demon and his hands begin to form into fists around his utensils, and his teeth began grinding his food as he felt his blood began to boil.

Before Ostel could fume further though, he was interrupted as from across the table someone was waving at him to get his attention. He shoke his head and noticed Calixta was asking him something, to which he asked, "Sorry? I was ... briefly lost in my thoughts. What was your question Calixta?" He said as he took deep breaths to calm himself.

The nymph let out a small giggle, charmed at his protectiveness over the elf-girl. But she didn't comment on what she saw and instead repeated her question. "Are you enjoying your... whatever that is? What does animal taste like?" the girl asked innocently, pointing at the pile of chicken on his plate.

At first Ostel gave her a confused look as he first looked down at his plate and then to her, "Well the chicken is good. But as to what it tastes like ... you are phrasing that rather oddly Calixta. Do your people not hunt in your homeland?" He asked genuinely curious

"Please, call me Calla," she said with a grin that was quickly replaced with a look of surprise. "Oh, gods no! I just explained to Summer that nymphs live on a vegetarian diet, so I wouldn't know what any type of meat tastes like. Well... except fish. I had to eat that twice. It tasted very... fishy?" Calixta laughed then, a bubbly, feminine sound.

Upon hearing the bubbly laugh Ostel could not help but laugh himself, a hearty laugh that infectously went around the table. Upon coughing to clear his throat he managed to say, "Gods be good! Was not expecting that, sorry Calla." He then breathed deeply to gain control of himself before continuing, "Well, it tastes sort of like stuffed bread with a warm meaty taste. My apologies Calla, it's hard to describe really, we humans have long hunted on our lands. It is hard for me to describe something that is second nature to us, would you like to try a piece?" He asked as he cut a small piece off.

"No, no!" she squeaked out, eyes wide. "I mean, that's okay. I'm accustomed to the sweet taste of vegetation, and I'm sure chicken is a far cry from that. Besides, you know what they say... women who eat meat, even once, are... you know... bad. They end up dying old and alone and-- ugly." Her voice had dropped to a hushed tone, and she was leaning forward in her seat, her cheeks tinged a deep pink from embarrassment.

Ostel merely bowed his head and then smiled at his fellow Sage, "No need to explain, I understand Calla. All of our races have different customs I suppose, but that does not mean any single race is right on whatever that custom is. It just means we have our own ways, and indeed I commend you for sticking to it. But just so you know, I don't think you will ever be considered in my eyes bad or ugly." He said with genuine sincerity.

Calixta beamed at his words, lips turned up in a wide smile. "You're very kind, Ostel. But I'm sure I'm not the first to have told you that, especially since Summer speaks of how you saved her. You two must be very close... But then, I imagine all romantic relationships are close, are they not?"

The Sage of Light's smile then faded as he looked to Summer, whose gaze did not meet his as her own eyes looked away. Ostel than half-heartedly grin and said simply, "I would not know Calla, I have never been in one. I would imagine they would have to be if the tales I hear have any truth them. And, Summer and me are not in a relationship Calla. She is free to choose her fate. My only intention was to save her from an unkind and cruel fate. She deserved better ... You deserve better Summer." He said with a sad smile to the elf he freed not too long ago.

Summer smiled at Ostel much like she had when she had told Calla about the Honey Dew, "And I have you to thank for my new chance at life... to even find out what 'better' is."

Calixta nodded along, a troubled look upon her face. "I am happy that Summer was saved. There are many people that deserve better in the world, and yet they couldn't escape a cruel fate... we couldn't escape a cruel fate..." And with that, the nymph looked down at her food, gently cutting up the fruit and slowly eating, the sadness of Acheron on her mind.

Seeing tha his fellow sages seemingly reflect on Calixta's words, Ostel then solemnly said, "We cannot save everyone my fellow Sages, that fact we sadly will have to face. But what matters is that we do what we can, to ensure that everyone at least has a chance at a better life. Whether it's by defeating our foes, helping the next season's crops grow, or giving some soup to someone who has lost everything." He said ending with smile at the Sage beside him.

Jade raised his head at Ostel's mention of soup. Which, consequently, he'd been helping himself to while everyone else was talking, sipping it through the carved mouth of his mask. The only kind of meal he was capable of eating without taking his mask off, which was preferable in such a public place as this. Surrounded by students. As he raised his head, everyone else at the table gave him a... rather wry, curious look. After a moment of silence, Jade said aloud, "If you thought it was going to be that easy..." He pointed towards his mask and said, "You were mistaken."

And then he continued to eat his soup.

Shaking his head and laughing a bit, Ostel then raised his flagon of honeyed mead, "To giving others a chance. I can drink to that!" He said as he chugged the mead.
Soon after Summer and Damien departed, Ostel felt a wave of sleepiness over take him as well. Before he made a move to stand up though he knew that a certain weight sit covered his boots. He then looked down at his feet and saw Snow, who was already fast asleep and curled up in a big white ball of fur. With a simple rub on his companion's ears though he woke up and groggily waited for Ostel to finish up with the group.

With Snow off his feet, Ostel stood himself up and unexpectedly belched, "Damn, Excuse me. That hit the spot, a good end to a fine day." He then stretched a bit with his gaze falling on the Sage of Earth, "I think I'm gonna turn in Jade. What about you?" The Sapientis Lux asked as he let his arms drop.

"I'll head back to our room in time." Jade replied, "I'm more interested in exploring a bit though. Late evenings mean not as many students will be about. I should only be an hour."

With that Ostel said his goodnights, but not to the Demon among them. Who ever the Sage of Darkness was he merely sat there as the remaining sages departed. Just as Ostel was about to leave the room as well he suddenly felt the Sapiens Tenebrae's gaze upon him. The Sage of Light turned and sure enough the Demon was looking at him, to which Ostel met his gaze with a glare of his own.

"You don't like Demons I take it?" The Sage of Darkness asked plainly.

"No. And I bet you do not fancy humans either?" Ostel shot back.

"Depends on the human." He said as he drew the top of his cloak over his white hair and then stood up.

He was taller than Ostel by about a head, but not quite as broad as him. But the Sage of Light knew just from the way the Demon stood that he was not a weakling by any stretch of the imagination.

The Sage of light kept his composure though and said sternly, "I'll work with you since we are both sages. But I got my eye on you." Ostel said firmly.

The demon merely responded sarcastically "Nice to know I have your permission Ostel Grimward."

Shaking his head in annoyance he then asked, "So, your name then?"

The answer could not of been simpler "Aegar."

Ostel recalled that name once, but the memory was fuzzy at best, "Aegar ... I've heard that name before. What's your last name?" He demanded.

What the demon said was cold and direct as it could be, "That is my business Ostel. Maybe I'll tell you sometime." With that the Demon left the main hall and made his way toward his tower.

After Aegar left, Ostel merely turned and went his own way, watching behind him to make sure that the Sage of Darkness was not following him. One thing he learned at the School of Light was that you should never trust a demon. Added on to that warning was seeing the results of demon attacks on Lucerna, and cruel was an understatement of how they acted. Then again, the same School of Light also preached that the elves were lesser then humans.

Perhaps Ostel was wrong to be suspicious of Aegar, but he preferred in this case to be on the side of caution.

The memories of the aftermaths of demon attack plagued Ostel's thoughts till he finally got his and Jade Fist's room. Once there he finally got out of his armor and gear, leaving him only in his leggings and white undershirt. His white wolf friend also welcomed the prospect of sleep as Snow literally collapsed right next to his bunk. The Sage of Light did make sure to keep his keen hunting knife underneath his pillow though.

The rest of dinner went by slowly as Calixta's mind was focused elsewhere. She listened in on the various conversations, thinking to herself that it had been a terrible sixty-fourth birthday so far. Or maybe not so terrible just because of Summer and Ostel. She smiled to herself, finishing her meal of fruits and nuts, then gazed off into the distance before politely excusing herself to her tower. Even a nod was given to Aegar, and she brought extra fruits just in case she got hungry later that night. No matter how slim she was, the girl could eat.

When the nymph got to the tower, she freshened up, changed into a simple shirt and night shorts, and then proceeded to finally inspect her room. It was fairly simple for the most part, with a large bed on the far side of the room, a table up against one wall and a small fountain against the other. The walls were painted the same off-white color as her door, and the accents and decor were a golden hue that matched her circlet. It was all reminiscent of home, and she smiled at all of it-- the water of Nymphe, the dresser that held all of her clothing and cosmetic desires... she could only imagine what everyone else's rooms looked like. But right now, Calixta wanted to relax. It had been a long day, and she still had other business to attend to-- business that seemed out of place at the University. Returning to the living room area, she sat in front of the low-burning fireplace and thought of Acheron, speaking in a hushed tone as if he himself could hear her from the heavens. It wasn't long before tears started to flow steadily down the girl's cheeks.

She stopped suddenly when she heard the door to their tower being opened. Ah, that was probably Aegar. "Did you have a fun time at dinner?" she asked, half turning around so she could look at him. He looked the same as when she spoke to him earlier, but there was an aggressiveness she couldn't place... Did he speak with someone after dinner? Calixta turned all the way around then, the firelight making the trails of wetness glisten in the near-darkness. "You didn't speak much. Well, except to Summer. But then again, you were looking at other...things." She knew she had to be careful with what she said now. Although Aegar was a demon, he wasn't the one who killed Acheron, and she would have to remember that... But it was hard to cage in a sadness and cold anger that she had kept inside for 14 years.

Once his conversation with Summer was finished, Aegar ate his diner mostly in silence. There was a wide variety of foods on the table, most of which he’d never even seen before, but for now he stuck with what he knew, a meal of roasted meat, bread, blood figs and ghost grass. While he ate, he listened in on the other Sages’ conversations and thoroughly eyed the other students and the school staff just to see if he could uncover anything useful, though there was little out of the ordinary to be heard or seen.

Once Aegar had finished his dinner and his brief conversation with Ostel, a large part of the other students had left the dining hall already. He simply followed their example and made his way back to the tower of water and darkness, which Calixta had assumably already returned to. Once there, he found her sitting in front of the fireplace in the dimly lit room, with what seemed like tears running down her cheeks.

“As much fun as one can have in a room full of strangers.” He sat down on the couch across from her once again, making sure to give her some personal space. “I’m not used to being around so many people.” He doubted for a moment whether he should say something, but eventually decided he would. “Something is clearly troubling you. It has since we first met. Can you talk about it?”

"I don't know," Calixta replied rather icily, which was so far off from her own personality that it surprised even herself. "I guess it is troubling to lose a loved one, isn't it? To none other than your kin, your blood... I have absolutely no idea why Amalia would place me here with you." The tone of her voice didn't indicate hostility, but more of a heavy bluntness that reflected how she felt inside. "And you had no problem watching that demoness-- yes I saw that. You obviously know how to pick out people from a crowded room." It was hard to tell exactly what she was feeling, as the little singsong voice of hers sounded amusing even when she was upset, sad, or even worried.

Aegar too had wondered why the sages were paired the way they were, but hadn’t sought any special meaning behind it so far. Just as he was about to reply, Calixta continued and pretty much changed the subject. He raised his eyebrows in surprise. “Is that a crime now? I doubt I was the only one looking.” It wasn’t the first time he’d been accused of being a pervert and at this point he hardly cared anymore. Humans, elves and whoever else always seemed surprised at how open demons are about their carnal desires. He shook the thought from him head and returned to the topic at hand. “But hey, I don’t know what reasons Amalia has for these pairings, but we’re gonna have to live together if we wanna get anything done. You’re not the only one who’s lost people, you know.”

"Yeah? And who was that, mate number 42?"

An awkward pause filled the air, and Calixta hung her head in shame and embarrassment. "I'm sorry, Aegar, I don't know where that came from... That was very insensitive of me." Her sea foam green eyes flicked upward to meet his pale pair, and fresh tears ran down her cheeks. "You must understand then, how hard it is to sit here in this very room with you when my... fiancé was slain by a demon on this continent. It wasn't... nice." There were a few choice words she could have put there, but she opted not to use them. After all, letting this out to a demon after so much time had made most of the anger just melt away, and all that was left was a broken emptiness that weighed heavy on her heart.

Aegar frowned in response to her rude reply. He was ready to be rude to her in return, but when she continued speaking and explained her situation, his expression softened up. He averted his pale eyes from her for a while, not sure of what to say. “I’m sorry you had to go through that. There’s a reason few outsiders visit Tenebra, it’s a cruel place. I too have suffered from it.” He felt a tide of suppressed emotion coming up from deep inside him, but he interrupted it by quickly rising to his feet. He had vowed to himself never to return to that memory. “It’s best if we both get some rest now. Our training will be starting tomorrow.”

"Yes-- yes," Calixta replied, standing up as well. "It was a nice talking to you... And please, call me Calla." She smiled then, a bright thing that contrasted with her previous emotions. She noted his own reactions, but decided to let it go; it would be too much emotion for one night. "And just for the record... there were prettier women in the room besides the demoness." The nymph smiled innocently and let out an infectious giggle, wiping the remnants of tears away. She air-kissed the demon as was the custom of her people then went to her room to retire for the night.

“Well, it’s pretty rude to stare at someone in their face.” he replied with a smile, a slightly more sincere one this time. He stayed behind in the dimly lit room for a few more minutes, simply thinking over the events of the past day. Little was left of the fire in the fireplace but smoldering embers when he too got up and went to his bedroom for a night’s rest.

The silence of the hallways was... easing, to say the least of it. Jade wandered through the twisting, turning corridors of the University, examining everything as he did. He was getting a feel for the layout. Drawing up a mental map. With a steel memory like his, he'd have little trouble remembering which way was which in the future. He just had to examine everything in one fell sweep.

Someone who doesn't sleep will make every attempt to occupy themselves, won't they?

Sicini. Again.

"I want to make sure I know how this place works." Jade replied, "You'll forgive my apprehension of staying in an opulent palace such as this."

Ever so cautious the outlaw. Hm.

Jade figured she said that last bit with a bit of a smirk. Suited her character.

I will leave you to your devices. But after tonight, the more arduous quality of training to become a true Sage will commence.

"There's nothing I know about earth magic they can teach me." Jade replied, "They'll understand that."

Indeed they will. But what causes you to believe your lessons will revolve solely around earth magic?

Jade ceased walking, genuinely curious as to what the necromancer meant.

Oh, Jade... I wish you strength in the times ahead. Goodnight.

And then he was alone again.

...

He found himself in the library. Rows of bookshelves full of tomes, reaching for the cieling. Mahogany tables adorned with lamps lit by dim crystals. Almost no one was present save for the occasional student hard at work studying for... something. Jade made as little noise as possible as he proceed through the library, appreciating how the most sensible place would also be the most silent. Calm... dimly lit... rather peaceful, really. Cozy enough to call home even. Silent as a mou-

"Hey..."

An audible whisper. Jade turned his head to the right. There, tucked between two aisles, clinging to one of the bookshelves, was a female elven student. Studious clothing, shy voice, bright blond hair, green eyes... scar on her cheek... something seemed familiar about her...

"You... you're the real Jade Fist?"

Jade simply nodded in reply.

"Could you come with me for a moment?"

The student turned and proceeded further down the aisle. Jade, only slightly apprehensive, decided to follow her. They passed through two rows of bookshelves, made a few turns, and finally came upon another straight clearing, full of tables like the central aisle. The student led Jade to the only table with a lit crystal lamp on it, surrounded by a cluster of other students. As Jade approached the table, he noticed... they were all elves. They all had scars, burns... now he knew what this was about.

"This is him." The student said quietly to the group. "This is really him."

Jade looked around as all the students gazed at him. He recognized all of them... past excursions... boats, crates, cages... every one of them was an elf he'd freed in the past.

"We make up all the former slaves in the University." The student said, "When we learned you were here... we wanted to see you. Thank you. For everything."

Jade looked at the student and said, "I..." He was truly void of a coherent sentence, so he simply nodded again and sat down at the table, letting the elven students surround him. After a moment of silence, he said to them, "I never... I never got the chance to learn each of your names in the past. I think I owe you that now."

The student from before leaned in and said, "Inali."

And the student next to her said, "Tonnev."

"Nihsa."

"Ferric."

"Nemos."

And the rest went on and on. He learned each of their names. Talked with them. Shared in their comfort. Rejoiced in their freedom. He decided he would head back to his quarters once he was done conversing with his kin.

For now... he felt truly at home.

As dinner continued, the six sages chatted away as they enjoyed their food, though eventually Summer quieted down and tried her best to stiffle a yawn as she fed some meat scraps to Merlin who had decided to perch on the table next to her plate. She managed to stay awake long enough for Damien to notice that she needed to get to the tower, and into bed. The elf/shifter seemed slightly embarrassed that Damien had noticed her stubborness and reluctance to leave the laughing group, but she also welcomed it. She politely excused herself and promised Calixta that they could talk some more tomorrow before heading to the Tower with her Werewolf roomate.

Once they finally made it to their tower, Summer thanked Damien for walking with her before she made the short climb to her room. The bed was still unmade from when she had practically jumped out of bed when Damien had gotten her for dinner. She had just started a nightmare before he had woken her, and she had been relieved that he had saved her from that horror, but there was nothing to save her now. Summer slowly changed back into the nightgown she had worn earlier and placed Merlin on his perch before climbing into bed, falling asleep minutes later, only to meet Fredrick in her nightmares.
The next week past in a blur, as the sages were kept busy with classes, Summer was finally getting a handle on the fact that she did have power over the wind, and it thrilled her to no end. She was a fast learner and did the very best she could to catch up to the other five sages that had had years of practice with their power. Despite the fact that she had awoken in the middle of the night every night since she had gotten to the University, she managed to stay awake during the boring portions of her class. Her nightmares of the night Fredrick had had his way with her in the barn were getting more frequent and more violent. Though Damien never came to her room, she was aware of his presence by her door every night since the nightmares had started and she felt horrible for waking him up, but she was also curious as to why he never came in.

On top of the nightmares, Summer was beginning to feel sick, which was out of the norm for her as she had never been sick before. In fact, she could have sworn that her race was impervious to any form of sickness that befell man. She wasn't sure if it was because she was finally able to use her magic and that it was taking and unexpected toll on her body, or if it was because she wasn't getting enough sleep thanks to the frequent visits of Fredrick. Despite all this, she pushed on through her classes and never gave up, no matter how sick or tired she felt while she was practicing and because of her perseverance, she had finally caught up to the others. No one really saw Summer unless she was in class or the very rare occastion that she would eat what little food she could stomach, she also actively avoided skin contact with anyone as she knew that she was burning hot. She didn't want to be sent to the infirmary just to find out that she wouldn't be able to be a sage anymore and be sent back to a world of Slavery.

It was after lunch on the seventh day that Summer's exhaustion caught up with her and she had collapsed during lunch, causing Calixta's food to fall on the poor Nymph.

"Oh!" the Sage of Water said aloud, leaning back to avoid most of the spill. Unfortunately though, her clothing caught the fruit blend, young soy beans and quinoa seeds that came tumbling off the table. "Summer? ...She spilled all over me..." The last part was said more to herself, and a small frown appeared on her face as she brushed off the solid food and dabbed at the wet spots. Calixta gave the elf-girl a poke to the arm and upon feeling her skin, noticed her temperature was well above normal.

"Ostel, I think Summer may need some help... I would take care of her, but I have to clean up before the juice beings to stick..." She looked down at a trail of fruit juice that began to slide down in between her cleavage, and she rushed away back to her tower.

Thankfully for the two of them, Ostel was in the mess hall at that time as he was reading an old history book. He was in more of a blue colored scholar's robe now rather than his armor. Seeing Summer fall though he quickly packed up his books and came over to the fallen Sapientis Ventus long before Calixta asked him to.

As he leaned down he muttered under his breath, "I told you that you were going to run yourself ragged Summer." He then checked for any serious bruises from the fall, and thankfully other than a bruise to the knee she was fine. As an afterthought though he checked her forehead out of habit, and quickly he he swore, "Divine's arsehole!"

Soon Ostel was tearing down the hallway towards Summer's tower, with the limp elf in his firm hands. He finally arrived in Summer's room and found no sign of Damien thankfully, he needed to focus if he was going to be able to help his fellow sage. After resting Summer on her mattress, he soon went to work on trying to heal the elf, but was frustrated to find that this was no mere fever resulting from exhaustion as he thought.

For hours Ostel poured his best efforts into tending his fellow Sage, with Snow beside him whining all the while and licking Summer's hands ever so often. While Ostel was able to prevent her fever from rising, she was clealry beyond his skill to heal, and the Sage of Light came to the conculsion that she more than likely needed rest more than anything else.

So the Sage of Light went ahead and tried to make her as comfortable as he could. He opened up a window to let the cool air in, disrobed her and dressed her in the emerald colored nightgown that he gave her, and even had Snow stay with her to comfort her. He told Snow to stay with her until he came back, which since Snow already had taken a liking to the elf, it did not take much convincing.

Before he left though, Ostel ran his right hand through her silver hair and offered a quick prayer to whatever gods that were listening to help her through her ordeal. He planted a gentle kiss on her forehead, rubbed Snow's ears as his canine companion nestled beside the stricken elf, and then he departed the room.

About a hour after Ostel had left, Summer had awoken to find Snow laying at her feet, watching her with what appeared to be worried eyes. As she redirected her attention to the ceiling, she began to try to ignore the fact that Damien was calling for her from her door, asking her to come out to eat dinner with him and the other 4 Sages as it seemed he was not aware of what had happened to her at lunch. She was afraid that if he came in and found out that she was burning up then he would try to talk her into being seen by a Nurse. When he stopped knocking on the door, she let out a relieved sigh, which was cut short by her door being forced open.

"Summer, are you ok? I haven't really seen nor heard from you for a while now." Damien said. "If anything's wrong, just let me know. I promise, whatever it is, I won't tell anyone unless you want me to."

Summer slowly withdrew her covers from around her and looked up at Damien as Snow quietly left her room, no doubt to 'report' to Ostel. Her silk nightgown was stuck to her body due to her profuse sweating and her hair was stringy for the same reason. She was breathing heavily and it was obvious that she hadn't been drinking enough water. "I don't know what's wrong," she managed to say, her tone strangled as if she were trying not to cry, "I don't know what's going on... Ostel already tried to help... I know he did... but nothing worked..." She reached out to Damien and grabbed his hand, her skin burning against his.

Damien's gaze fell down to her hand and then to her face. "Summer," he mumbled. Damien quickly went to Summer's bathroom and began letting some cold water fill the tub. He then went back to Summer, put his arms under her body, and picked her up off the bed. "I understand you don't want anyone to see you like this, and I promised I wouldn't tell anyone, but I don't know what the problem is either. All I know to do right now is to get you cooled off. You're burning up like my fire." Damien brought Summer to the bath that now had a modest amount of water inside, and sat her down in the tub with her head resting against the edge. He shut the water off, grabbed a cloth, rung some cold water through it, and placed it on her head. "That's the best I can do for now, Summer. The only way I can help you more, is if I get someone else in here."

When Damien picked her up, Summer let out a whimper of pain and nearly screamed when he set her in the water. She wasn't aware of how cold the bath was, as the moment he set her in steam seemed to rise from her skin. She only knew pain, a pain that felt as if her very body was trying to rearrange itself into a different form, a foreign form. "It hurts," she groaned, [b]"Damien... it hurts... the pain won't-"[/]b] Before she could finish her sentence a scream ripped its way from her throat as the sounds of snapping bones could be heard.

Damien looked on in shock, awe, and horror, as Summer began to morph into. . . something. As her bones began to rearrange themselves, and her skin changed into fur, he knew then what was going on. She wasn't changing into a were-animal, but he knew the pain of the first change. Her bones began to increase in size, arms turned into legs and hands and feet turned into paws. White hairs began protruding from all over her body, soon developing into a thick fur. Three tails formed out of her lower back, and her nose and mouth turned into a snout. When the transformation was complete, A three-tailed white fox 1.5x the size of a normal man sat where Summer was before.

The Summer-Fox looked around and let out a yelp before jumping out of the cold water. When she landed on the floor, she shook out her fur and looked at Damien, her violet eyes full of confusion as the pain slowly disappeared. "Damien... w-what happened to me? Why... why do I look like this?! I'm an elf! Elves don't turn into animals!" Summer said telepathically, her mental voice full of panic as she turned to face the floor length mirror in the bathroom. When she saw that she now held the form of an abnormally large fox with three tails, she started to panic even more. Her first thought was that she must have gotten bitten by a werefox, but that was ruled out quickly. No part of her looked like a humanoid, she was all animal. "Damien... what am I?"

"Well Summer, I'm no expert at this, but I believe you're a Shifter. Similar to me in that you can change forms. The difference is I can only change into half-man half-wolf, and you fully change into any animal in existence." The worry Damien had a minute ago, subsided as the full picture was being shown to him. " If you ask me, I think it's pretty cool. And you shouldn't be worried about anything. Well, besides the pain you might have while morphing, but other than that, I think you're fine. "

"Is the Pain... always this bad? It felt like my body was being torn apart and forced together into this unfamiliar shape. I had a moment there that... I thought I was dying. Havā didn't tell me that it would be so painful.. or that I would even change at all. I'm mostly Elf as far as I know... not that even matters really, I don't know my parents, or my grandparents for that matter."

"Honestly, I don't know. From my experience, my first transformation was the most painful. But I gradually got used to it, and now it doesn't phase me at all to change. The difference again, is that you're a shifter and I'm a werewolf. All I can say is to hope for the best, but for now, I guess the question is how long do you stay that way. Can you shift on will right now, or is there a timer?"

"Um... I don't think I can shift right now... I mean, I want to but it's like... my body won't allow it just yet. It's a strange feeling, but... maybe you can teach me to fight while I'm like this? I'm sure size doesn't count for much if I can't use it."

"Hmm, the problem with that is, you're on four legs. My werewolf form is bipedal. I'm not entirely sure what I can teach you, and if I can teach it well. But I guess the least I can do, is maybe make you a little more comfortable. Follow me into the living space."

Damien then proceeded to the living room, so as to have more space for his larger werewolf form, and stripped down to nothing but his pants. After a few deep breaths, Damien started growling, as his transformation began. Fingers, hands, toes, and feet began to grow in length and size, turning into paws, as claws replaced his nails. His nose and mouth were replaced by a wolf's snout, and his canines became larger and sharper. His ears grew upwards and pointed outwards. The rest of his body grew larger as muscle mass was added, all the while, black fur sprouted all over. After the transformation was complete, Damien the man was replaced with Damien the werewolf as he let out a long howl.

Damien stood in the center of the living room now a seven-foot tall were-beast, wearing nothing but ripped trousers. "So, what do you think?"

"Honestly? If I wasn't stuck in this shape I would ask if I could touch you," Summer replied, "Um... your fur I mean... I... uh... not... oh dear..." She shook out her fur in a flustered manner and carefully approached Damien before nudging him with her nose. Though he was about Seven feet, Summer easily came up to his chest, so she just nudged his shoulder. "Your fur is... soft. Does the condition of your Human hair affect the condition of your Wolf Fur?"

Summer felt equally soft against Damien as she jumped up to chest level. "Not really, my fur just seems to be like that. You however, feel as soft as a cloud." Damien stood there for a second, thinking of the next course of action. "So, uh, what should we do now?"

Summer was silent for a moment as she thought about what he said, though that didn't last long as the pain of another change rolled over her, causing her to let out a howl. "Again?! WHY AGAIN?!" she cried out as her bones began to shrink and rearrange themselves back into her small elf form. By the time her shift finished, tears were streaming down her face as she tried her best to get over the pain.

"Oh... I'm... uh... you are soft," Summer sniffled when she noticed that she had gripped onto his fur.

Damien watched her morph back into her normal self again. This time it seemed to be worse as he saw tears in her eyes. He chuckled at her last comment before wiping away her tears with one finger, "Thank you for the compliment. I promise you, the pain will go away soon enough. When I cannot say, but soon." All this time, Damien couldn't get the fact out of his head that she was completely naked. If he was in human form, his face would have been red as a cherry, but the fur made for a good mask. He grabbed a nearby blanket, and threw it over Summer to cover herself up.

"Now I think is a good time to rest and regain your strength after all the exertion that was put on your body, yes?"

Summer gripped the blanket tightly to her and looked up at Damien, shifting from foot to foot. "Um... I guess but I... can I just stay with you in here for a bit? I don't usually talk to people and... I like talking to you," she murmured softly as she looked at her feet, a light blush on her cheeks, "I mean... you don' t have to talk to me... you are already so kind, I don't want to be a burden to you."

"A burden?" Damien asked in confusion, "You're never a burden on me. We can talk for as long as you feel like, but all I ask is this; from now on, never believe that you would ever be a burden on me or anyone else for that matter. If you agree, then we will talk whenever you feel like it." Damien then picked her up and carried her to the couch, opting to stay in wolf-form. It seemed to make her feel safer, at least, that's what Damien thought. He sat down on the couch and sat her down on his lap, with her head resting against his chest.

Summer was initially startled by Damien's action, but she relaxed against him and couldn't help the small smile that crept onto her face. "I'll try my best," she finally said, "I promise. Thank you... for helping me. I'm not used to people being so kind... what with me having been a slave an all, people used to look at me with disgust. Thank you for not looking at me in that way, I can't place how it is you look at me... but it's not disgust." Summer leaned up slightly and kissed Damien's furry cheek and smiled up at him.

Damien would have been as red as fire thanks to that, Thank the gods for fur. Damien cleared his throat, "Yes, well, some people in this world may be cruel, but I do not believe that everyone is inherently evil. It's the society we live in, I'm afraid. Slavery is the norm, and until it is outlawed, some people will get the short end of the stick. I do believe, however, that times are changing, and slavery will soon go away. Jade Fist's cause is admirable, but I'm not entirely sure if violence is the only answer. Either way, you're not in the life anymore, you're among people that like you for who you are, not your race."

"Until now, I wasn't even sure if anyone really liked me at all," Summer admitted before letting out a small yawn, "It's nice to have someone who likes me for who I am... even if I am a timid little Elf-Shifter." It was obvious that Summer was both joking, and terribly tired at that moment. "You know... you are oddly comfortable... I can't figure out if it's because of the fur, or if it's just you."

Damien chuckled and started petting her head, "thank you for the compliment, and I bet this timid little elf-shifter will become a great and powerful elf-shifter. One who will stand tall and show everyone that anything is possible, no matter who or what you are."

Summer just smiled a bit before resting her head on his chest once more, content with listening to his beating heart as the rhythm eventually caused her to drift off into a dreamless slumber for the first time since she arrived at the University.

Damien sat there for a second to make sure Summer was asleep, before picking her up and taking her back to her room. "Good night Summer, hope you're transformations get easier." He quietly walked out and shut the door, before walking to his own room.

At some point during the night after Damien left, he was awoken by her frightened cries yet again. This time though, they seemed pained more than scared like the others, pained and a lot louder which made him wonder how it is that no one in the other Towers ever came to see what was going on.

Damien shot out of bed, startled and almost tripping over Ember. He burst through his own door, and ran to Summer's. Damien checked to see if the door was locked, and indeed it was. He took a step back to get good footing, and brought his foot into the door, breaking the top hinge and handle. He ran over to Summer and gripped her tightly, "Summer, wake up! It's justs a nightmare!"

Summer let out a louder scream and started to thrash about, not realizing that it was just Damien who had a hold. Despite his best efforts, Summer continuously screamed to be let go until her voice went hoarse and she slumped into him, crying. She finally realized that is was Damien who had a hold on her and she tried to stop her tears, she didn't want to seem weak in front of him, though she had a feeling that her worries were too late.

Damien sat down with his back against her bed, and Summer still in his arms, "Summer it's ok, it was just a night terror, nothing is really happening. I'm right here, no one else." Damien wiped away Summer's tears for her, trying to calm her down anyway he could.

Summer slowly calmed down as she rested her head against his bare chest, trying to focus on his heart beat to help her slow her breathing. "I'm... I'm sorry... I... I wake you up every night... I'm sorry..."

"Hey, hey, it's ok. I know it's gonna take some time for you to get over your past, and everything else. I've already accepted that. Don't ever feel sorry for something that's out of your control. I promise you will get over it, ok? I'm not that far away," he said looking towards his room and the broken door, "and now, I'm even a shorter time away. If you ever need me, just call."

Summer just stared at her door, or rather lack-there-of, and then looked up at him before giggling a bit. She had no idea why, but she found the idea of him breaking her door rather amusing, but that only lasted a moment until she gently gripped his shoulder. "Would you... um... will you... can you stay with me tonight please?" she asked with a light blush on her cheeks.

Damien was a tad startled, but he didn't show it, "Sure, I'll stay with you." Damien lifted Summer up and tucked her into bed. He made a pile of pillows on the floor and Summer handed him the top blanket on the bed, "Thank you." He gave a sharp whistle for Ember to wake up and come into Summer's room. He motioned for Ember to jump on the bed with Summer, "Maybe that'll help. Good night Summer and Ember." Damien then got on his little makeshift bed, and lulled to sleep.

The following morning, Summer wakes up to Ember snuggled up to her and Damien still asleep in her floor. It took her a moment to remember what had happened the night before she decided to just let them be as she quickly got dressed and left her room with them snoozing away. Once she was positive that the two had not woken up, she left the tower and decided to explore the University. As she wandered the hallways, she took her time to admire how everything seemed to change around her. To her, the hallways were designed to create a tunnel of trees that allowed light to leak through their branches, creating uneven splotches of light as she walked. The orbs that usually floated within the halls were no longer there, as there was no need for them to be.

Unable to stop herself, Summer put a hand on one of the wall trees and smiled as she felt the rough texture of bark under her slim fingers. After a few moments, she began to walk again, lost in thought as she allowed her mind to wander to the events of last night. She still couldn't believe that she was a shifter, and that she could change into such a large animal, but how was she supposed to do it on a whim? Still lost in thought, Summer ran into something, or rather, someone, and fell back on her butt with a small squeak of surprise. When she looked up to see what it was she had bumped into, she saw Jade Fist peering at her through his mask.

"Oh! I'm sorry," Summer stammered out as she rushed to get to her feet and dust off the green sun dress she was wearing, "I... I wasn't watching where I was going..."

"It's alright, Summer." Jade replied, raising his hand in a calming gesture. "What are you up to?"

"I'm just... wandering the halls really. Between classes and trying to catch up with you all... I haven't... really had the chance to explore... What brings you through these halls?"

"Thinking. Just... thinking. Walking helps me think."

"Oh... I see... well... how has your first week of this place been?"

"So far it's been pleasant enough. Still can't shake off that thought of Lucerna's slaving rings recovering while I'm away though. Irks me that there's nothing I can do about it at this time."

Summer looked down at her bare feet, as she never did like the feel of shoes, and rocked back on her heals a bit, "I wish I could help them... I mean, I'm finally learning how to do things that I couldn't before and I feel like... I should be helping our people... you know?"

"Hmm. That's exactly how I felt when I first crawled out... out of..." Jade fell silent for a moment, and shook his head. "Nevermind. It's good to feel like you have a purpose. Cherish it."

"May I ask... why do you wear all that armor? It seems like it would be stuffy in this type of place."

"When I first donned it, that was indeed a problem. But after you wear the same thing for over a century... well, it really feels like a part of you. Guess it just doesn't bother me anymore."

Summer simply nodded her head as she continued to rock back and forth on her heels, she wasn't sure what to say to that as she felt like it would be a bad idea to question why he wore it at all. She still bore the scars from when she questioned things that she shouldn't and though she was aware that Jade more than likely would not harm her, she felt it safer to remain silent.

"Summer, may I ask you a question?" Jade said suddenly.

Snapped from her thoughts, Summer looked at Jade and simply nodded her head to indicate that he could do so.

"Those doors. In the main hall. Each one represents one of us. I wanted to ask you... what do you think is behind the door belonging to you?"

Summer looked up at Jade for a moment before adapting a thoughful look as she thought about what he asked her. She remembered one of her teachers explaining that the doors were there when it was time for a Sage to face what they either feared the most, or if they had unfinished business. The only thing Summer was truly afraid of was Fredrick, and she didn't feel as if she had any unfinished business with anyone. Well... there was one thing she was afraid of more than Fredrick...

"Honestly? I am not certain... Is it possible to face yourself do you think?" Summer asked softly.

Interesting response. Jade thought it a valid enough possibility.

"Perhaps..." He said, "Internal conflict is one of those timely... cliches, people always read about in books and play scripts. But then, it seems like the greatest of triumphs, doesn't it?"

Summer couldn't help the small chuckle that escaped from her as she thought on what Jade said, "It really does seem cliche doesn't it? I guess we won't ever really know what is t is behind our doors until it is time for us to open them. It is just... I have one side of me I know nothing about... I wonder... a lot actually, about what it means to be a shifter really..."

"You ask me? It's a greater kind of freedom. Oneness with the living of nature... something many elves dream of achieving. But a shifter has a much greater connection, I'm certain."

"Jade... what do you think is behind your door?"

Somehow, he was expecting her to ask that question.

"Summer... I know exactly what's behind my door."

She nodded her head, perhaps it was like that for most of her companions, maybe not. "I do not, but I would like to... I would like to offer you my help, for what its worth, if you will accept it."

Jade's voice began to lose a bit of its usual stability. "Summer, as much as I value your companionship, the same for all of the Sages... I don't think that's a good idea. You don't deserve to see what's inside Shatterbrain." He hadn't even noticed he'd said the name until seconds after it escaped his lips.

"Oh..." Summer murmured, Maybe he thinks I'm not strong enough to help..., "I don't... right, I'm sorry..." She focused her gaze back down to her feet as she softly chewed on her bottom lip, not knowing what to say next.

Jade shook his head. "Because..." He paused for a moment, and then brought his hand up, raising Summer's chin to meet her gaze once more. "I don't want you, or anyone, to face the madness I faced. I would never forgive myself if that happened to any of you."

"But... isn't the point... to not have to face it alone? I mean... we are all suposed to work together and everything... If you think it's too bad for me to face then... maybe it's too bad for you to face alone?"

An honest loss for words. Jade lowered his hand.

"You..." He muttered, "You could be right. But I... we'll see what happens when the time comes. I don't have any power over you. It's your choice whether you aid me or not."

Summer met Jade's gaze with a steady one of her own before offering her hand to him, "Then I am coming. I consider you a friend so... so I won't let you do it alone."

Jade raised his hand to lay it upon hers, but... he paused for a moment. He raised his other hand, tugging on the fingers of his gauntlet... and off it came. His hand was... red. Rugged. Riddled with burns and scars. Didn't even look like skin. His ring finger... you could see the bone. And emblazoned on his right hand was a circular insignia bearing the letters SSJ, branded into the skin, charred and darkened enough to stand out amidst the red and yellow.

He raised his hand once more. Now he was the one offering his. To his suprise, without a moments hesitation, Summer place her pale hand into his burned and scared one. She didn't so much as flinch as her soft hand met with the sensation of scars upon scars that would turn any hand hard. She wasn't afraid of what she had seen, in fact, a part of her was happy that he allowed her to see that part of him, no matter how small.

After a moment, their hands separated. Jade placed his gauntlet back upon his mess of a hand.

"Let's walk." Jade said, "Together. See what sights the University holds."

Summer offered him a genuine smile as she nodded her head, "That sounds good to me."

The sky was clear, the sun was shining, and the classes were done for the day. The sun decided to stay awake for a bit longer before letting the moon take over, so Damien decided a nice nap would suit well. However, his bedroom seemed too stuffy, and there was no where around the school that seemed like a good spot, so he settled on finding somewhere outside the school but close by if one should need him. The front of the school was too bland for his liking, however, the back of school gave a much more impressive picture. A couple of hills were just behind the school, which Damien and Ember both ran up to get a good look at the picture. Once they reached the top, they saw that a dense forest about a mile out, stretched for what seemed like forever, "Now this is a view." A small boulder jutted out of the ground nearby, which proved to be a good back rest. Damien sat down with his back to the school, and his eyes fixated on the picture in front of him. Ember crawled into a ball beside him, and without a word, the two let sleep take them over.

As the hours went by and the the Sage of Fire rested along with his canine companion, they were oblivous to their surroundings, trusting their safety to the nearby presence of the University. As the sun was starting to dip into it's afternoon cycle a tall cloaked figured moved toward the sleeping dou, stopping just shy of a few few meters of the Sapiens Ignis.

The figure shrugged and chuckled a bit at seeing the sleeping pair and nudged the sleeping Damien, "Wake up sleepy head, you found my spot. Can you believe these guys Snow?" The broad figure said to a familiar white wolf behind him.

Damien groggily woke up, and when his eyesight cleared up, he saw that Ostel and Snow were standing over him. "Oh this spot?" Damien began still half asleep, "Sorry about that, it's very nice spot though. Would you mind sharing?" Damien straightened himself up, and got into a more comfortable position to relax while patting Ember to wake up. "I'm still not used to the bustle of that many people. It's nice to get away and find some peace and quiet."

With a grin Ostel looked out to the vast plains and the setting sun as it painted the clouds many strange and exotic colors. The Sage of Light nodded his head and smiled, "I cannot blame you for that, it's a view that I'm sure many painters would pay to see." The Sapientis Lux rested his back to the rock, and Snow sat himself down beside his companion's legs before resting near Ember, the two wolfs playfully poking one another with their noses.

The Sages watched the exchange between their companions for a bit with a smile on both of their faces, for no words needed to be said. Ostel finally broke the silence with a sigh, "You worried about what kind of foes we well be facing Damien?" The Grimward asked as he crossed his arms.

Damien thought about the question for a second before answering, "Worried? A little, yes, but I think anyone would be if they were in our shoes. Either that or their foolish. I'm not worried as much as I am wondering. We at least know a few things about Bonketsu and his enforcer. It's his minions that have me thinking. They could be anything, and that I don't like. I might be worried about our enemies, but it's our group that has me worried more. I don't think you could have found a more ragtag group of heroes. It will be a long time before our team fully melds, and if we aren't when we hit the battlefield, then I'm afraid we would have already lost. How about you? Are you worried about anything?"

Ostel did not answer right away as he pushed himself from the boulder, walked a few paces away from Damien, and started to walk back and forth. All the while his shield hand rubbed his chin hair, thinking about his concerns on the matter. After a few seconds Ostel turned his head to the lycan, "Too many things worry me Damien, but I try to not think about the things outside my control. I understand your concerns as well, and they make sense. I know Jade Fist can handle himself and our mutual 'friend' Aegar can do the same. As for me I imagine I would fair just fine, I've had some fights and skirmishes under my belt."

The human then shrugged, "As to you, Summer and Calixta ... well no offense meant, I just have not seen any of you fight except for Calla. Me and her spar regularly so she can at least hold her own sine I am training her. Plus we all have our spells, and we would not be Sages if our talents were not the best now or in potentail." It was then that Ostel stopped his pacing.

And then he let out a chuckle as he grabbed a small rock, "Then again I could just be talking nonsense ... hell I never considered myself a hero anyways." Ostel said as he threw the rock high into the sky, and grinned seeing the distance he managed to get.

Damien chuckled at that last comment as well and stood up from his own spot. "Honestly, I haven't had too many tustles with other sentient races, but my father trained to be an excellent hunter and master with a bow, but it's not our physical prowess and magic skills that concern me." He let the idea sink in before continuing, "Think about it, A bastard son from one of the most powerful families in Lucerna, a former slave girl from said family, an anti-slavery outlaw, a royal commoner nymph, a demon with a past, and a revenge-seeking nomad. Many ideas, history, and races are being thrown together and told to get along to save the world. What worries me if we will be able to put our differences and pasts behind us and band together as a true team to defeat the greatest evil."

Damien then picked up his own rock and chucked it just as high as Ostel, whether Damien's went higher or lower than his comrade's was impossible to tell at the angle. "Maybe I'm putting too much thought into the matter."

Ostel tried to block out the sun and follow Damien's thrown stone, but gave up, "Good throw." When the Sage of Fire nodded with a hint of pride in his eyes Ostel then admittted, "Look I don't pretend to have all the answers Damien, but maybe there is something we can do. BUt I'll need your help." Ostel said looking his way as if expecting a reply.

Damien met Ostel's gaze, "What do you have in mind, friend?"

The Sage of Light took a deep breath and began, "We need to get the Sages together, by that I mean as a fighting force. I have some military training, and I think if we all discussed our strengths openly we can figure out how to organize ourselves in a fight.." Ostel then pointed to Damien, "From what you have said, you are a good archer, and I am more of a melee fighter. I keep them focused on me with my light spells to disoreintate and confuse them, you pick them off. That's just the two of us, which can be effective." The Grimward bastard then held both his arms out and said, "Now imagine if we can organize the whole damn group. If we master our spells, accomodate one another, train beside one another ... well then I think we can at least survive most of the encounters we will face."

Ostel then let his arms drop and chuckled as he scrathed the back of his head, "Then again I might be wrong. Hells that mean Aegar will have to be part of the group, and Summer may not be effective in combat. But .... it's something at least. What do you think?" The human asked as he watched Ember and Snow playfully wrestle on the grass.

Damien thought about Ostel's proposal for a short time before replying, "While your idea is sensible, practical, and overall a very good idea, which I fully support, that's not the point I was getting at. Physical prowess and combat skills are important, yes, but our team is composed of radically different personalities, conflicting backgrounds, and, to each person, strange cultures. The physical is not what worries me the most, it's the mental aspects that I'm afraid may be the obstacle that keeps us from completing our goal." Damien stood there, making sure he got his point across this time.

With Damien's words in mind, his friend scratched the chin hairs he had and paced around a bit, "Well, we could all sit down one evening and talk frankly, might do us some good. I could go first if need be. Do you think that might help, or do you have another idea?" He asked as he stopped to listen to his fellow Sages response.

"While that's a viable option, maybe what we could do is combine both of our points. We could have ourselves and the other sages spar one on one, and possibly have the others observing. After the session, we could discuss what could be done to improve ourselves and in-between, talk about our inate differences." What say you, Ostel?

To that Ostel nodded his head and smiled to the Sapiens Ignis, "Sunds like a plan Damien. Come tomorrow let us both talk to the others. Hopefully they will see the wisdom in this as well."

Then suddenly Ostel gave him a hard look, "By the way, what are your thoughts on Summer?" He asked simply, with his sudden cold tone implying more than then he was letting on.

Damien cleared his throat at the question, " Summer is a fine girl. She may have much to learn in the way of magic and combat, but I'm sure she will come into her own light." While Damien may have given a simple and literal answer, he knew what Ostel was getting at. He let out a sigh before continuing. " Summer is a sweet girl, we may not have everything in common, but there are a few similarities. I've helped her through her first change, and when she has night terrors. I'm sure one day she will help me. I will be honest with you, I do feel like I have feelings for her. I'm not fully aware of your own relationship with her. If there is something between you two, let me know and I will back off, if not then I would like your blessing seeing as you freed her."

With a sigh Ostel looked off to the setting sun in the distance and shoke his head, "I wish I could say that it is Summer's choice Damien, but there is a reason I am asking. I am sure she has told you about what has happened to her and what would of happened to her had I not acted." When Damien nodded his understanding Ostel put his hands on his hips and his gaze fell to the ground, "Look as long as you care for her, then I guess I'm alright with it. But keep in mind, if you hurt her, then you answer to me. No need to think about it, but let's pray we never come to blows, because it seems like the world has enough troubles without the Sages fighting each other over love."

The Grimward bastard smiled and looked up to his fellow sage and nodded, "You have my blessing, don't abuse it, please?" He added the last bit with a bit of a joking tone.

Damien turned his gaze towards the setting sun and nodded a few times. "You have my word, friend, and I wouldn't have it any other way." He then outstretched his hand for Ostel to shake, who grabbed and shook firmly. "Now, I think it's about time we got ready for supper. What say you, Ostel?"

"Agreed." The two then did an about face and gingerly walked back to the school with their pets right by their owners' sides.

After the first night, everything else paled in comparison when it came to excitement. Calixta walked around as if emotionally drained, and though it felt awkward to be around Aegar, she found that she was finally starting to complete the process of letting Acheron go... not her love for him, but the pain and sadness that she had bottled up inside. The week seemed to go by slowly; days were filled with physical and magical training that seemed to be even harder than what she learned on Nymphe. But, all of it kept her mind busy and off the emotional turmoil within her.

The easiest magic to cover was, of course, water. She excelled in the advanced spells of water healing, surpassing most of the students who took the course. Then again, few students took focus in water magic as it was naturally wielded by the hands of the nymphs, and there were no others of her race to compete with. Seeing that she excelled in the most advanced aspects of water, the professor transfered her to a different class, which covered Ice manipulation. She found it difficult at first to change the state of water, but once she got the hang of it, she was surprised by everything that she could do. She found that, not only did she excel at healing, but she also excelled in defensive magic as well. One of her favorite ice spells involved creating an exoskeleton of almost any animal she could think of. It was pretty much the only offensive magic she knew, but she felt that was all she needed. It also seemed the more fun and made her feel more at home, which made things a bit better for her at the University.

It seemed the biggest thing that set her apart from the all the students, including the other Sages, was the fact she was a nymph. The gossip that had started about her wasn't because she excelled in water and ice magic, it wasn't because she almost flooded a room out of fear of trying fire magic, and it wasn't even the fact that she was seen yelling at her peacock Garon. It was simply that she was beautiful. Wherever she walked, she attracted attenion from the other students-- male, female, elf, demon, human... It seemed like everyone tried to interact with her. Of course, each interaction was different and it often ended in her expressing annoyance at whoever was subject to her emotions that day. So it was that she often kept to herself within the gardens, reading or just relaxing in her free time.

But try as she might to lie low, there was no escaping the unwanted dirty attention that was lavished upon her, especially by the demons. The second week at the University, during a meal break in the dining hall with Summer, she was rudely interrupted by a male demon.

"Hey Calixta," he started, wearing a boyish grin on his face. It was one she didn't appreciate. "I noticed you don't eat meat. Would you say you like eating muffins?"

"...Yes, I guess so," the nymph replied with a shrug, looking up with a smile on her face. "Why do you ask?"

"Well, I wanted to know: are your muffins buttered?"

"Hmm?"

"Would you like me to butter your muffin?" A snicker rang out in the long table to the demon's left side.

Summer looked at the demon and glared at him, "Why don't you take a spiked mace and shove it up your ass you degenerate freak."

The demon's smile was quickly wiped off his face. "No one asked you, slave girl. Shut it, you're only half a shifter. Not even a real one."

Summer's eyes flash the silver of her fox and she jumps to her feet, "That's all I need," she snarled as she changed into her Fox form, towering over the demon, "Its enough to deal with scum like you. Now leave my Friend alone!"

"Easy, Summer," Calixta murmerd, putting a hand on the fox's back. She giggled. "Look, he's already afraid of you."

It was true. His skin visibly paled and his eyes went wide as he took in Summer's fox form, and he stammered some incoherent response about "joking around."

Summer snorted, her hot breath causing the demon's hair to move slightly as she placed her face close to his. "If you, or any of you Demon friends come anywhere near Calixta again, I will tear you apart and feed you to the wolves, am I understood?" The Demon simply nodded his head and the rancid smell of urine hit her nostrils, [i["You should go clean up now... before everyone else notices you urinated yourself at the site of a [/i]slave girl. It wouldn't seem very... manly."

Calixta covered her mouth and let out a dainty giggle before it blossomed to an outright guffaw, and she threw her head back as she watched the demon skitter off. "I told you to take it easy, Summer! You didn't have to make him piss himself. Now the whole school may think we're completely insane! ... It does make for a rather funny story though, wouldn't you say? I just hate the no one will leave me alone sometimes. It's infuriating!"

Summer let out a small growl like chuckle, "Well at least you have me now to put them in check, maybe if I scare enough of the ones wno treat you like a piece of meat, the rest will get the hint." She playfully nudged Calla with her muzzle.

"And let's not forget about the girls who like to talk! You know, they talk about the both of us. It's maddening really. If you ask me, it's just because we're more beautiful than they are." The nymph winked at the fox beside her and stroked the soft fur. "And not to mention that we get to regularly spend time with the men who are put on a pedestal, and not just for their magical ability-- for their looks, too!"

Calla heard Summer's soft laughter in her head as she leaned into the Nymph's soft touch, "Let them talk, it won't get them anywhere... the men we are lucky to call our allies and friends aren't so shallow... though Aegar seems like he would have a go with anything on two legs... maybe four... I haven't tested out that theory yet."

"Summer, please don't test that with yourself... He may eat you or something!" Calixta whispered the last part, but still laughed at Summer's words. Satsifed with her meal, the nymph stood and offered to walk with her new friend back to the towers.

Think.

Think.

Think.

Think.

Think.

Jade was seated upon a stone pedestal of his own creation. After so much time in the University, he'd noticed the looks of ire from the multitude of human students in the hallways. Perhaps a good deal of them were richer individuals. With families who... dabbled, in the slave market. It wouldn't surprise him. Worthiness does not exactly relate to morality. Thus, he decided his "thinking time" would be best carried out away from the little world he knew. He'd left Sicini's orb back in his quarters, he didn't wish to deal with her either. It was just him, alone, on a great stone slab overlooking a pond outside of the University.

He sat there, on his little pedestal, and did the same thing he always did.

Think.

From across the water came a slight splashing noise, like a large fish had just jumped up and slapped back down against the liquid, but it was nothing more than Calixta surfacing from the depths of the pond. Her dress and hair was drenched, but she quickly siphoned the water off her body and back into the pond. She had discovered this little spot when she wandered off one day in search of a place that made her feel more at home, and so far this was it. It became a regular occurrence for her to spend an hour under the waters, even if just to take care of the home sickness that settled in her gut like a permanent uneasiness. The nymph sang a soothing tune as she gathered her belongings, but when she turned she found herself staring at Jade, who seated atop a large grey stone that surely had not been there when she first came to the pond.

"Hello!" she called out brightly in her tinkly soprano, offering an equally bright smile and a waving hand.

"Greetings." Jade replied, nodding. He guessed he wasn't alone here after all. "You must have been here before I arrived. Am I intruding?"

"Oh, gods no!" she giggled, "but I think I may be intruding on your...um...stone time." She gestured to the large grey slab in front of her. "Do you come here often?"

"First time." He said, "I wanted to see what it was like outside. Think about recent events. This seemed like a tranquil enough spot." He stood up from his little pedestal and stamped his foot on the surface of the slab. A row of steps dropped down on the side, in front of Calixta. He extended his armored hand downward, welcoming her topside. "Come on up."

"Nymphs like being below the sea rather than higher on the ground," Calixta said, grinning. But she took the offered hand gladly and clambered up the stone steps to sit beside the mysterious elf. "It's a calm place. Calmer than the University, and I think we all need that sometimes. It...sort of reminds me of Nymphe here, on this tiny little pond. Well, inside the pond, that is."

"I imagine it's quite beautiful down there." Jade said, turning his head away to stare at the pond once more. "And I also imagine you don't get many visitors."

"Oh no, not here and not on Nymphe. Being immortal really puts you on a different sense of time, and my people have always been very reclusive. As far as this pond, I thought I was the only one who knew about it. I couldn't spend time in the gardens anymore, not with that peacock constantly making noises at me."

"Struck me as an oddity as to why four of the six of us own pets. I'm not against it, but... it seems beyond coincidental to me."

Calixta almost rolled her eyes. "It's not even mine. It was just given to me, and it's an annoying creature at that. What do you mean, it's coincidental?"

"Nothing." Jade said, letting out a bit of a sigh, still keeping his gaze turned. A pause went between the two until he abruptly asked, "How does it feel to be immortal?"

"If you mean aging, it doesn't feel any different. But we tend to take life decisions very seriously. They do carry on into eternity, and that can be either a comforting or scary thought..." Calixta looked away for a moment, the weight of the answer sinking into her heart. The mood had to be changed. "Would you like to hear a joke?" she asked, her eyes lighting up excitedly. "But I only know sea related jokes, so that's what I'm going to tell you."

Without waiting for an answer, she turned to face him. "What did one ocean say to the other ocean?"

"I don't know. Tell me."

"Nothing! It just waved!" The Sage of Water tittered to herself, almost like a praise for making herself laugh.

Jade simply nodded, not sharing in the laughter. "Funny." He replied. He didn't know how Calixta would react to his void of amusement but he sat patiently and awaited her response.

The smile quickly faded when she noticed Jade wasn't laughing with her. "Why aren't you laughing? Was it not funny enough? I mean, I have more..." Even though she offered more, Calixta had a feeling he wouldn't laugh at any of the others either. She sighed. "We can talk about other things, if you like."

"My apologies, I... don't tend to laugh much." He replied, locking his fingers together. "It's something that just... disappears after a while. Especially in my line of work."

"I used to not laugh, too," Calixta nodded along. "It took a long time, but I remembered how to laugh. Although I'm sorry you feel that you cannot... But wouldn't you say life is too short to not find humor in it? Then again, I wouldn't know. I am immortal after all."

"It's more important to me to see to a goal being fulfilled." Jade kept his head turned away, gazing beyond the pond now. "Don't mistake it for an innability. It's more of a... preference."

It was the strangest thing, to meet someone like Jade Fist. Calixta wasn't sure how to feel, but she nodded at his words. "I think that's one of the things nymphs don't really understand, including me. What is a life goal? Something to accomplish before you die? What if you can't die, but something just suddenly prompts you to have a life goal? You have my respect, Jade. Not many people are able to say they accomplished something important, but you can. And I'm sure someday when it's all over, you'll remember how to laugh. If not, you can just ask me for help!" The girl smiled and giggled, but it was a half hearted attempt; it was empty.

Jade... let out a soft chuckle. Much to Calixta's surprise. He turned his head and said, "How's that for a start?"

"Better. Much better." Another comfortable blanket of silence covered the air until she blurted, "How do you feel about demons?"

"In general?" Jade replied, not even the slightest bit offset by the question, "Can't say. Haven't met enough to forge an opinion. Sicini is the first demon I've spoken politely with in... well, ever."

"Demons can speak politely?" The sarcasm in Calixta's voice was plain and obvious, and she turned away to look over the pond. "I didn't realize they were capable of it."

"It's more about the person themself rather than the caste they are born into." Jade said, looking at Calixta with the slightest amount of genuine intrigue in her meanings. "Many judge me solely by my actions. My mask, even. Yet, here we are. You and me. Speaking politely to each other."

"Yes, well elven culture is seen as one of the more refined out of all the other races," she insisted. "Besides, you have rhyme and reason to your actions. Out of the many things I've heard about you, none of them have ever stated you as a cold blooded killer. You don't do those things for fun or sport now do you? If you ask me, that makes all the difference."

Jade didn't respond at first. He merely stared down at the pond once more. Suddenly, his hands moved upward, reaching for the edges of his hood. He pulled it down, revealing his mess of black hair, unkempt and unwashed, loose strands everywhere, tied behind him with a small band. The skin around his mask, his jawbone and neck, were not unlike the color of some old piece of wooden furniture. A bit of a light brown, scars and blemishes here and there. A crimson scar ran around the entirety of his neck, reminiscent of a noose's farewell. The most notable features were his ears, however. They were clipped down to a fraction of the average elven ear length. And it looked like whoever committed the act used a pair or rusty shears.

Jade raised his hand up to his mask, hand over the mouth.

"It is often we take to the recorded feats of one's doing to discern their true nature." Jade said calmly, "It's rare when we rather hear upon what they have to say instead."

With that, he lowered his hand, leaving his mask attached to his face. He pulled his hood back up, making it look as though it had never been lowered. "Wouldn't you agree?" He said in a hush tone.

By all accounts, Jade Fist should have been seen as a scarred image in Calixta's eyes, yet she found herself extending a hand as if to heal the scars, to touch the beauty of one with a pure soul. But she thought better of it and set down her hand, only murmuring, "Yes... I suppose I do." She whispered the words back, looking at him with sad eyes. His words rolled over and over again in her mind, and she simply said, "I don't think I've ever had the honor of meeting someone so wise and beautiful. Thank you." The nymph leaned toward him and kissed the cheek of the mask, as was the customary symbol of respect of her people, and leaned back against the stone slab, her face showing a mix of awe and curiosity.

A slight pause, and Jade stood upright. "Thank you as well." He said, "I'm quite content now thanks to our little talk. I think I'll head back to the University now."

Calixta said nothing and only nodded, and she sat upright to dangle her feet off the rock before gently hopping down. "It was nice talking to you, Jade. I think I'll stay here for a bit longer... You have given me much to think about." She stood at the edge of the water, letting the liquid lap around her toes before turning back to the armored elf. A pensive thoughtfulness glazed over her vibrant seafoam eyes and she said, "You should try thinking underwater sometime... 'the sea is emotion incarnate. It loves, hates, and weeps.' One drop of it and it's like you've uncovered all it's secrets." With that, she daintily dove into the blue waters, swimming deeper until it seemed as if there had been no trace of her at all.

Jade turned and took his leave of the pond, heading in the direction of the University, thinking.

Hmm. Maybe after I learn how to swim.

Another training demon was sent flying into one of the castle's pillars, dissipating into a fine mist, though the impact of the illusion would make anyone jump on the other side of the wall. From the training yard came the howling war cies of the Sage of Light as he wailed on the training demons that surrounded him. Though the small impish creatures could not really harm him with their clubs, but when they hit a person it does feel real though the damage is non-life threatening.

Clearly Ostel had no such liabilities, and using his newly acquired warhammer the Grimward bastard tore his way through the nine remaining minions like a giant broom, sending their shadowy figures flying this way and that. With one mighty upward swing an imp fell high into the sky, and with a downward strike another one's head was crushed into the ground with a resounding thud. Before he could bring the Dawnbringer back into his firm grasp though, one of the creatures got a swipe at his heel, which made Ostel howl all the more wildly as he spun round and sent the minion into a fountain with a loud splash and puff of black smoke.

The fight continued few only a few of the imps actually hitting Ostel, but the end was predicable from the start. After the final shadowy figure evaporated, a sweaty and slightly bloodied Ostel stood in the arena with only himself standing. He took a few moments to look himself over for injuries, and felt a bruise on the back of heel and head, and a small cut on his right cheek.

Aside from that he shouldered the Dawnbringer and walked over to the training bench to rest for a brief spell and treat the injuries.

"Knock knock?" Calixta asked, letting out a small giggle. "I was just out and I wanted to ask you if you had seen Summer anywhere... Oh! You're hurt! Do you want some help with that?" She entered the training yard then, quickly walking to where Ostel was seated. All thought of Summer was gone, and the nymph stepped forward to inspect his injuries even as slight as they were.

Though Ostel tried to put up his hands he could not stop the persistent nymphe from doing what she desired. With a pathetic sigh he gave up politely declining and let her help him as he treated the injuries. As he mended the cut on his cheek he turned to her with his sky blue eyes and said, "Thank you Milady, I appreciate your kindness as always." He said with a small nod of his head as his glowing palm went over his cheek, and as his hands past the wound, the injury sealed up.

The blue eyes that were so clear seemed to pierce Calixta right to the soul, and she blushed slightly, fascinated by the healing process. "My healing is very different from yours, though I can see how light has healing properties. Are you hurt badly? I saw you swinging at those training imps, and you did a very good job. Although... they are very different from fighting real demons. Real demons are tall, fearsome, and they take away loved ones." A hard glint lit up her sea foam green eyes, though it quickly passed into nothingness.

The Human sage placed his sword hand on his head and grimaced in discomfort at the healing effort, but thankfully the injuries only let the headache stay for a brief few moment. However Ostel was listening to Calixta, and noticed her tone drop a bit at the mention of the demon's taking away loved ones. He decided against asking how she knew, as he knew some secrets were better left buried.

The Sage of Light then straightened himself on the bench and began, "I've had worse injuries, but I am touched by your concern. I'll be fine Calla, trust me. My healing powers allow me to heal fairly quickly. However, the more grievous the wound then the more it takes out of me to heal it. It goes from being a slight headache to the possibility that I could black out entirely. Thankfully I have not had to exert myself that much yet."

He then nodded his head and said, "And you are right, REAL demons would hurt alot worse. But that's why I train myself like this, it is not like the real thing, but it helps me to keep my mind sharp and reflexs quick." He then sighed and realized he was probably yammering on like a crazed loony.

The Grimward bastard then chuckled and asked, "So, you adjusting to life here Calla?" He said leaning back and smiling at the Sage of Water.

"Life here is very different... There is no water surrounding the land, for one, and I often feel like I'm out of my element. But I imagine that most of us here feel that way very often. I know for a fact that Summer does, and that's why I like speaking with her. We relate in many ways." She smiled and looked up at him, surprised that he would know about what real demons would be like.

"Nothing can prepare the body and mind for the aggression of a demon, no matter how much physical and magical training a person has had. They are simply wild cards and no one, not even my immortal people, has begun to understand the inhabitants of Tenebra. Aegar is different though, that much I can say." Calixta quieted for a few moments, then gave Ostel a dazzling smile. "While we're here, would you care to show me some combat tactics? Nymphs rarely ever fight, as most of our fight is mental and magical... a dance of minds, if you will."

With a simple nod Ostel eased himself up from the bench, "I'd be honored Milady." He held out his hand, which Calixta took gladly, and Ostel noticed her cheeks turn slightly red. He knew she had a fancy for him, and truth be told he did not mind. It felt nice to actually be held in high esteem, it felt like he was special to someone. But he didn't dare bring it up, and he knew that as Sages they would be facing the worst situations. So he cleared his mind of such thoughts... for the time being anyways.

He then went over to a small training rack and grabbed two training wooden swords, to which he handed one to Calixta pommel first. Once she had it in her hands Ostel then began, "Alright, I'll try to teach you some basic defensive moves. Since I am guessing you are not trained in swordplay I'll be teaching you how to deflect and get away from combat. It may not seem herioc, but by buying yourself some time, your allies can deal with whoever is assaulting you." with that he raised his training sword and gave her salute by bringing sword up to his face and bowing.

"Are you ready to begin Calla?"

The Sage of Water let out another feminine giggle as she got a feel for the wooden sword. "If you wanted to engage in swordplay, I could have used my long knives. I'm not completely devoid of training. Acheron had taught me many things in his lifetime. But yes, I would like to begin!" She twirled the sword around, surprised at how heavy it was despite it being made out of wood.

And so Ostel began his lessons, teaching her of how to fend off a skilled attacker. Though he did his hardest to not actually hit her when he got by her defenses, he did land a few whacks to her arms and legs, and one good solid jab at her stomach. He taught her that merely deflecting the blow was not the objective, but to use the opponent’s momentum to throw them off balance. After a few failed attempts, Calixta started to show promise as she almost threw Ostel's brute strikes off.

Finally as the sun began to set on the pair, Ostel gave her one final try before they called it a night. The first swing he sent to her midsection, but she parried his attack and spun inward to strike him back. In response he tried to use his arm as a battering ram to shove her back, but the Sage of Water continued to move around him as graceful as a dolphin around a jagged cliff. Expecting her to strike him in the center of his back Ostel spun with her and swung at chest level with his sword.

Usually this would get her as it did before, only this time Ostel felt a solid kick in his midsection, which sent the Sage of Light sprawling onto the dirt. For a moment he lost his ability to breath but then he laughed, "Calla you beautiful damn nymphe! What a kick!" He said as she stood over him as the victor.

Rasinging his hands up Ostel then admitted meekly, "I surrender to your mercy Miliady! The day is yours." He said with a broad smile of pride etched across his face.

Calixta grinned at his praise, breathing heavily from the physical exhaustion. It had been a while since she engaged in such heavy training, but the times for relaxation were over and the girl needed a reminder of how to fight. The exercise left a thin sheen of sweat on her brow, and she sank to the ground to kneel beside him. She would have offered a hand to help him up, but he was tall and she she was much too short for that. Instead this was her way of helping him even after she brought him down.

"I apologize for the kick," she said, a look of worry on her face, "but I just got so excited! It's been a while since I've really been challenged and you provided just what I needed. Thank you, Ostel." Her cheeks turned a deep pink at the mix of emotion and exhaustion, and the nymph girl leaned forward and placed a hand on his chest as if to kiss him.

At first Ostel did not know what to say or let alone even think. He actually was going to be kissing a beautiful woman? But was it right? ... in his gut he heard a resounding no, and thus he regretfully knew what he he had to do. He then began to stand himself and his fellow Sage up who was starting to give him a worried look.

Ostel then took her hand and said kindly, "Milady, I fear I am not ready for this." He then took a careful step back, "If you want to yell, go ahead, I won't stop you." He said as he seemed to ready himself.

Confused, Calixta cocked her head to one side a bit. "But I thought... I must have read things wrong, I apologize... again," she giggled out once more, though it sounded empty and a bit heartless. "I won't yell at you, I promise. I was just... mistaken, that is all." A sad smile turned up her lips, and she took a step back to distance herself even further from the Sage of Light. "Are you... upset with me?"

The Sage of Light merely shook his head, "I can never be mad at you Calla, I just do not wish ... something that special to be based off a lie. You are a beautiful young nymphe, and I can see your kind soul, your caring nature, and happiness yearning to grow again. It would be wrong of me to take advantage of your quest for happiness."

He then shrugged his shoulders and said with a smile, "Then again I could just be acting like a fool. But ... hell's I don't know." He then gave a sad look to his fellow Sage, "I do not want us to grow apart because of this Calla, you are a good hearted person. And my life would be less joyful if you distance yourself from me. Am I making sense?" He said as if asking himself the very same question.

"Of course you make sense. And why would this make us grow apart?" she asked, genuinely confused. Back on Nymphe, finding a mate was often confusing and it was never easy. But despite all the failed attempts, they all remained on good terms with one another. It just meant that things were not meant to be. "I am glad you told me now rather than later as it probably would have upset me more later..."

A comfortable pause colored the air, and then Calixta turned back to the human. "Well then, I must be off! The sparring was fun, but I was trying to find Summer... Ah, I'll find her later!" She moved to put away the wooden sword, and she had returned to being her bright cheery self again, almost as if the entire ordeal never happened. But nymphs were like that; they were emotionally all over the place.

Before she left though Ostel then intercepted her departure, and again she tilted her head to the side in confusion, to which he merely bowed, "If I may at least have the honor of escorting the victorious conqueror back to her quarters?" He said hooking his strong and sturdy arm out to her with a warm smile.

"Of course, Ostel." The girl brought her raven hair over to one side then gladly took his arm with a smile. "You truly are unparalleled when it comes to being ever the gentleman!" She awarded him with another dazzling smile and lead the way back to the castle towers, leaving Ostel with a friendly kiss on the cheek before heading up to her room.

The moon was shining in a clear night sky, the light from Luna herself pierced through the windows of the University. The Sage of Light was walking through the halls at this late hour with an old history book in his arms. Ostel was never much of a reader admittedly, but he had found that he had a recent interest in history, and not just about his people's history. In his hands was a book detailing the wars between the elves of Tellus and the humans of Lucerna.

It was only when he heard a shattering sound nearby tthat shoke the Sage of Light from his immersion in the text, "Damn, was just getting good to." He said shaking his head and closing the book as he went towards the sourse of the sound. As Ostel came closer though he heard laughter, a mocking laughter almost, and a very, VERY, annoyed animal growling.

What animal could be out here late this night? And among the halls as well?

The human Sage set the book down on a passing bench and started joggin down the hall. As he was only doneed in a scholar's riobe, he only had the Dawn bringer at his side, but the twohanded warhammer was all Ostel needed to confidently deal with any problems.

And a problem Ostel did find as he rounded the corner and saw what was causing the ruckus.

There in the hallway was a large white fox that was unmistakably Summer, and under her rather large paw was a demon, but that wasn't the worst of it. Summer's usually snow white fur was splattered with blood and four other demons were attacking her, frequently getting swatted away. When one of the Demons managed to sink there blade into her left shoulder, she let out a howl of pain and snapped her jaws around the Demon's arm, taking it clean off. When Summer saw Ostel there, she gave him a pleading look, it was obvious that all of them were too much for her.

Little reason was needed for Ostel to fight demons, and Ostel readied the Dawnbringer as he quickly ran towards the closet demon to him. It was only when he brought down the light enchanted weapon upon the head of the demon that he bellowed a loud battle cry. The remaining demons turned from the surrounded great white fox and looked at the newcomer with eyes wide in anger.

Ostel then roared aloud, "Surrender! Now! Or The Sages of Light and Wind Will Tear your Worthless Hides Limb From Limb!" The human said as he stood as straight as he could to be more intimidating.

The demons merely laughed and one of them responded in kind, "Oh please! A bastard and a half-blood! I think we should do Divius the kindness and show you how weak you both are!" With that the speaker said something in his native tongue to the others, while he charged the Sage of Light with his wicked blade in hand.

Perhaps Ostel should of stressed that he was not in the mood, but the demon had made his choice. The pale skinned humanoid tried to make feint him and strike him down in one swift motion. Ostel saw the attack coming though, as he was trained to fight demons. They never attacked from the front, only from an unexpected direction, and the Dawnbringer came up and slammed into the demon's chin. Putrid blood and broken teeth were sent spewing into the air as was the body of the now dead demon.

The other two demons stopped as they saw their comrade's body flung between them, and a look of uncertainty flooded across their faces. Ostel then howled out again, "Last Chance! Your Choice!" Ostel said as he advanced upon the pair of demons who stood between him and Summer, with his own growl echoing across the now silent chamber.

Summer was now towering above the two demons, her hot breath causing their hair to ruffle slightly. Her eyes were shinning with anger as blood slid down her fur and onto the ground, the Demon she had had pinned under her paw was unmoving in a corner. You may want to listen to him. Summer growled into their minds, Because I was taught some new tricks, and his element will burn you from the inside out.

The demons then looked on the giant fox with horror clear in their eyes, and the two remaining demons ran away leaving their fallen behind. Ostel grunted in disgust, "Demons, you can always count on them to save their own hides." He then let the Dawnbringer fall to only his shield arm and he approached Summer carefully, stepping over the fallen bodies of the demons, "Summer, what happened?"

She just shrugged her shoulders before shifting back into her normal from, "I'm naked, can I borrow your cloak please?" she asked as she looked down at her currently bloodied form, "And it was just some demons looking to get revenge on me for embarrassing him during lunch... I made him piss himself. Then again, he was being rude to Calixta..."

The Sage of Light merely nodded and took off the upper part of the Scholar robes, leaving him in only a white undershirt. He placed the robe over over Summer's slim shoulders, covering her small frame, "I understand, sorry I didn't get here sooner. Can you walk?" He asked with a concerned look.

"Yeah, I can walk, I'll just have to heal up when I go to my room. I've learned a healing spell with my wind that is pretty effective, so no need to worry. Oh! Have I told you about the classes I am taking?" she asked with a smile on her face.

Ostel smiled and placed a firm hand on the back of Summer, "You can tell me all about it as I walk you back to your room Summer." He said as they departed from the scene of the fight.

As they walked, Summer seemed to be back to her normal, cheerful, self as she told him about the Martial Arts class and Pole Arm classes she was taking. "I figured it would be good for me to be able to fight with and without my staff. I'm still trying to get the hang of fighting as an animal though, its harder than I thought."

Her fellow Sage only smiled and and replied, "I can't even begin to imagine how that feels. Must be quite liberating for you Summer." he then stopped in the middle of the hallway and just smiled at the Sage of Wind for a brief moment, not saying anything, but just smiling warmly at her.

Summer frowned as she peered at the Light Sage's face, "What is it Ostel? What is it that seems to weigh so heavily on your mind?"

The human merely shook his head and said, "I'm just astounded by how far you have come. And frankly, I'm proud of you. I can tell that given time, you will need me anymore." he said nodding his head. Then his smile went away and his eyes drifted a bit to the ground,as if remembering something,

"You are full of it, I can't see a single day where I wouldn't need my closest friend. It doesn't matter how strong I become, or even how strong you become... you saved me from certain death when no one else would. You are the kindest soul I have ever known and I will always look to you for help and guidance."

Ostel's smile returned and even a small chuckle came from his lips, "It's kind of you to say Summer. Truly it is, and I try to remind myself of that. I just wonder if you will look at me the same once we go through my door. You may not like what you see ... but I guess we'll face that day when it comes right?" He said jokingly as he began walking down the hall again with a boyish grin.

"I don't think there will ever be a day that I wouldn't like you, we all have things we are not proud of, but that doesn't mean we should think less of those who share with us those secrets. When the time comes, I know you will make the right choice, and it will be the choice YOU think is right. It is you who has to live with it, not us, and I think more people could stand to learn that lesson. We should never allow people to define you, no matter what actions you take, only you can do that... or something like that. I'm not very good with these whole philosophical quotes." The Elf-Shifter offered Ostel a half smile.

As Summer's entrance way came into view Ostel nodded his head and replied, "It is not the blood that makes a person noble, but the deeds and acts." He then laughed a bit, "Sorry, something my father once said. Seemed like along the lines of what you meant, then again like you I am not much one for that kind of thinking."

They stopped outside her and Damien's entryway, but then Ostel said, "I asked Damien about you by the way. He cares for you a great deal." He said with a certain sadness in his blue eyes that his smile did a poor job of covering up.

Summer tilted her head to the side, clearly confused, but also worried about the look he had in his eyes. "Ostel... please... you are hiding something from me. What is ailing you? I don't like seeing you so upset, it is so unlike you to seem so sad."

Again Ostel chuckled a bit, and with his right thumb he cleared a bit of mist from his eyes, "Heh, sorry Summer, somethings are worth getting a bit upset over." he then waved a hand in front of him, "I promise I'll be fine. I am just going to say that what Damien and you are starting to have, well it's something I entertained the possibility of having." He said with a half-smile.

Before a breath had past over though he said, "After what happened back in Lucerna though, I told myself that I would not force anything upon you. You need to make your own choices, and bear the consequences of those decisions." He then placed his firm hands on her shoulders, "Thankfully for you, my dear Summer, I am a consequence that is able to move on. But I wanted you to know that at least ... and to not worry about me ... please?" He asked with a impish grin.

To Ostel's surprise, Summer threw her arms around the Sage's neck in a tight hug, her face hidden in his neck. "Ostel, you have no idea how happy you have made me," she said softly after kissing him lightly on the cheek, "You have given me the chance to truly live and for that I am eternally greatful. I am sure that some day soon you will find someone for you, and when that time comes please, do not push it off. Do not think yourself undeserving and do not... do not wait until it is too late. You deserve to be happy much more than most people I have met through my stay here. Smile more, be happy... and please... please don't ever hesitate to talk to me about anything. You are a dear friend... and dare I say like the brother that I doubt I've ever had. I will not lie and say that I never had feelings for you, for that would not be the truth. But I was also still in the mentality that I was little better than a slave... thank you for showing me that was not true."

Indeed Ostel was stunned as Summer professed all of this as her delicate body nestled into his broad frame, but he could only wrap his arms around her waist and return the embrace in a bit of a bear hug, "Thank You for understanding Summer, and I appreciate the offer of help." The human then rubbed the back of the Shifter's head and stood there in the embrace for a bit before he and her parted with their hands in each other's palms. The Sage of Light then brought her hands together and kissed the back of Summer's palms before letting go.

The Grimward bastard then bowed his head to the former slave, "Milady Sage, I wish you fond dreams. And all the happiness in the world." He said with a beaming smile as he looked on with pride at his fellow Sage.

Summer smiled happily as she looked at Ostel, "And you as well Sir, I am sure that your happiness is just around the corner, you just need to know where to look." She bowed swiftly before opening her door, handing Ostel his cloak back just before running up the stairs to her room.

The human merely laughed as he put his robe back on, picturing the naked Summer in his mind, "Still a sight to see ... lucky Damien."

As Ostel straightened out his attire his coughed a bit, "Well Ostel ole bud, you have turned down a nypmh, and lost a chance to be with one of the hottest damned elves this side of the planet .... man I am glad I think I am doing the right thing. Otherwise the amount of hell I would get from my brother Peter would be unbearable! Gods be damned! I'd have to kill the bugger." He said as he walked back down the hall to find the history book he was reading earlier.

The following week went by as a long and restless one. Aegar spent most of each day following classes and training sessions in sword fighting, hand-to-hand combat, advanced dark magic and basic earth, fire, water and air magic. He had no prior experience in using any other type of magic than dark, but he was a quick learner and was soon capable of casting a variety of the most basic spells. To his surprise, fire magic came to him easiest. Despite being closely related to light, it also shared certain characteristics with darkness. Fire too was a living thing, a gluttonous force that will swallow everything around it if you let it. It was even more destructive though, and harder to control. Water and air followed close behind in terms of difficulty, though he had absolutely no talent for the healing aspect of either. Earth magic was his weakest point out of the four. Earth was such a solid and stubborn element; he had trouble getting a grasp on it.

And then there was light of course. As a sign of keeping an open mind, Aegar had initially joined the light magic classes as well, but they were a disaster more than anything. Even something as simple as a basic light-generation spell ended up backfiring and doing the opposite of what it was supposed to do. At that point it was pretty clear that light magic wasn’t going to happen for him.

Few of Aegar’s classes were shared with any of the other Sages, since they were all proficient enough in their own element to move on to the advanced classes right away, all except Summer, who had to climb up all the way from zero. Despite that, during the classes they shared, air magic noticeably came more naturally to her than it did to Aegar, or to a lot of the other students for that matter. He also shared the sword fighting classes with Calixta, due to their similar choice of weaponry, but had so far refrained from sparring with her due to the tension between them.

But he wasn’t just busy during the day. Wanting to get the most out of his stay here while it lasted, he would regularly leave the residence tower at night just to get some extra practice in the training arena in the peace and quiet of the night, as he preferred it. Being brought here had pulled him away from his business of chasing the Brotherhood, so the least he could do was fill up that lost time by improving his skills. He wasn’t the only one of the demons who preferred to roam the school at night rather than day, but apart from that handful, the halls were always empty at night.

This time was different though. At he was making his way through the dimly-lit hallways with his hood drawn over his head, largely concealing his face, he could already hear the faint sounds of fighting coming from the direction of the training arena. He slowed down when he neared the door and slowly pushed it open, curious to see who was inside. In the past week, he hadn’t seen anyone else come out to train at this hour. As he peaked through the crack in the door, he saw a single person, one whose mere presence seemed to make the gloomy environment slightly brighter, swinging his war hammer at a training dummy. It didn’t take long to guess who it was.

Aegar slowly stepped through the doorframe into the arena, relying on the sounds of battle to drown out the sound of his footsteps until he got a little closer. At about twelve feet distance from the man, he came to a stop and folded his arms. “What’s the Sage of Light doing out here at night? Aren’t humans afraid of the dark?” he said in a mocking tone.

The human responded by bringing his ancient warhammer down like a comet upon the training dummy, sending bits and small splinters across the training area. From there, Aegar noticed the Sage of light take a composed breath before standing up again, but with his back still turned to the demon, “There is no reason to fear the darkness. Not if the light is strong within one’s soul.” The human seemingly mused this to himself rather than answering Aegar’s taunt.

Aegar watched stoically as half of the wooden dummy was splintered to pieces by the heavy jeweled war hammer. “Ah, yes.” he said while he pulled down his hood. “The light will protect you for a while. Until it fades. And when the light is extinguished, the humans find themselves naked and unprotected. It is a fleeting thing to rely upon. Darkness however, darkness is eternal, and loyal to those who embrace it.” As he spoke, he slowly padded around the Sage of Light in a half circle, until they were facing each other with the broken dummy between them. “What brings you here at this unhumanly hour? I’ve seen no other humans daring to enter the halls at night. Did living with the man of stone get too heavy for you?” He nonchalantly pulled his right-hand sword from his sheath and playfully twirled it around in his hand a few times.

In response the human finally met Aegar’s gaze, but oddly enough a smile was etched across his face, but not a sincere one by the looks of it, “Ahh, the talented tongue of Demons. I see you are gifted in the famed skill of taunting and mockery. Truly none can match your race in that field.” Ostel then rested the head of his warhammer on the ground, with the ancient weapon glowing a bit more than it was a moment ago.

The Sage of Light then placed both his hands on the base of the hilt of his weapon, but kept his stance and gaze fixed on the demon “And well that your kind masters that craft, as it seems that it is their only strength, okay that and having the fondness for dominating others. Fun fact though, did you know that Demons really do not like prey that fights back? Or in fact, those who wield the power of the Light? I found this out as while training to kill your kin actually.” The Sage of Light said with his full smiling fading back to a half-smile, but the light emitted from the human not just persisted, but appeared to slowly become brighter.

Aegar’s previous half smirk turned back to his seemingly stoic expression. “A human trained by humans. Tell me, how can they prepare you for something they hardly understand?” He twirled his sword around a few times again and as he did, the blade seemed to slice through the dim lighting of the room, leaving behind a trail of thin black vapor. The sword seemed to grow even darker in color than before as it was enveloped by a thin layer of the dark smoke. “I think you’ll find my kind less predictable than you deem them. You are a knight of summer, Ostel, and winter is coming. Perhaps you need a demonstration.” With that, he jabbed his blade forward, sending a gust of black smoke pouring out of the tip, quickly enveloping first the Sage of Light and then himself in the cloud of blackness. “Can you fight what you can’t see, Lucerna boy?” he said while he commenced a forward sprint. When he reached the dummy, he jumped, placed his right hand on its relatively intact left shoulder and pushed his feet forward mid-jump, about to collide them right into the human’s chest if he didn’t move.

But the demon's feet did come into contact with something; it just grabbed his feet and swung him to the far side of the room. Thankfully Aegar's years of experience prevented him from being thrown off balance, and the smoke that trailed from his blade went further on to darken the entire room. Before the sage of darkness could react however a bright light seemingly exploded from Ostel's direction, a sphere of light that surrounding the human. Aegar summoned a sphere of darkness to match the light. The Demon Saw through the bright light that Ostel was holding his warhammer high over his head, his eyes fixed on the demon.

The human then spoke with a determined look in his eyes, "I expected we would come to blows Aegar. But If you had expected this 'Knight of Summer' to simply be all talk, then you have made a grave a mistake" The spheres of light and darkness met in the middle of the room, causing the room to shake a bit as the power from the two sages clashed. Either uncaring of the storm in the middle of the room, or indeed more powerful than Aegar had assumed, Ostel had somehow found the will to start advancing toward Aegar. As the sage of light came forward, so to did the sphere of light, pressing against the dark sphere, pushing it back.

Not one to be beaten so easily the sage of darkness gritted his teeth and summoned the strength necessary to do the same. Just like Ostel, as Aegar came forward, so too did the dark sphere, and as the two warriors came closer though, the powers between them became more volatile and tumultuous. The results of their struggle of wills began to cause the shaking of the room to increase, even sending deep tremors throughout the surroundings rooms, possibly to the entire university.

“Good. I wouldn’t want it to be too easy.” The border where the light and dark spheres met was a continuous battle of both forces trying to devour each other, like two rivers violently clashing, neither of them gaining or losing any ground. Aegar sheathed his sword and spread his arms wide, with balled fists. “Light and dark are bound to clash sooner or later.” Black, tar-like tendrils had begun materializing from thin air and curling around Aegar’s arms. “We might as well establish the dominance between us right away.” Without any further warning, he thrust his hands forward, sending the black tentacles charging forward like a group of snakes about to devour a rodent.

Ostel abruptly brought down his previously raised warhammer, smashing some of the inky tendrils to pieces, only to have the remaining ones quickly adapt to the situation and curl themselves around the head and shaft of the hammer. The two opponents eyes were still locked as the tentacles tightened their grip on Ostel’s hammer, threatening to disarm him, when a bright light, even brighter than Ostel’s already present aura, came shining through the chaotic tangle of tentacles, withering them like old dried-out vines. The runes and jewels embedded on Dawnbringer’s surface were brightening by the second, scorching away the black tendrils with its magical light.

Ostel waited no longer and charged forward into the wall of darkness, going for a shoulder bash, but Aegar had already stepped aside. The demon’s curved blade once again came free from its sheath and struck out towards the human, but Ostel was quick to react and it accomplished nothing more than a small tear in the fabric of his clothing. The two of them halted once more as their elemental aura’s continued battling. “You’re faster than you look, I’ll give you that, human.” Aegar said as he pulled his second blade from its sheath and threateningly twirled them around in his hands.

However the human sage kept to his sacred warhammer, and then the two warriors paced around each other in a circle, their paths drawing lines in the sand. The sage of light then spoke again as his hands gripped his sacred weapon, "You'll find that I'm full of surprises Aegar." The battle of light and darkness between the two spheres seemed to of dimmed slightly. Also, though the tremors did not stop shaking the room, it did lessen a bit, as if preparing for the next rumble between the two Sages.

And then Aegar lunged, using the trailing wisps of darkness from his blades to cloak his movements. The conflicting spheres erupted into a bright conflagration as the two sages engaged, with the tremors returning even fiercer than before. Ostel kept up his defenses though, skillfully and mightily parrying each strike, feint, and counterblow that was laid against him. After one such deflected attempt, Aegar was surprised at the ferocity of Ostel's counterattack, so much so that he had to put some distance and re-evaluate his foe.

The demon sage now knew that Ostel's relic weapon was faster in the Sage of Light's hands than most wielders of that weapon type. While users of the warhammer favored power over speed but it seemed that Ostel enjoyed both advantages.

The weapon, that's the key.

Aegar had to find a way to separate the user from his weapon.

Ostel stood defiantly with his gaze as grim as his last name implied, "Second guessing yourself, Aegar? If you want to back down now, you can." As the human said this, Ostel's sphere seemed to glow even stronger and even press against the darkness in the room.

“You’d like that, wouldn’t you?” Aegar answered while he tightly balled his hands around the hilts of his swords. “This isn’t over quite yet.” With that, he slammed his fists together, causing a black cloud, even darker than the dark globe surrounding him, to erupt from the impact, completely shrouding him from sight for a short moment. It didn’t take long for the smoke to dissipate due to the light of Ostel’s aura, but a second was all he needed. Before the smoke had even dissipated, two Aegars, seemingly identical in the twilight of his own aura, darted out to both sides, one left and one right.

Ostel was surprised for a moment by this trick, but quickly got his thoughts together when one of the demons came towards him from the left for a flanking attack. He reacted swiftly and butted the attacker with the pommel of his hammer, only to have the demon in question dissipate into black vapor upon contact.

It didn’t take long for him to understand how he’d been fooled, but it took just long enough. An unanticipated cluster of black tendrils dove in and curled themselves around his right forearm. With a firm pull from the tentacles, his hand was forcibly dislodged from the shaft of his hammer and his whole body was spun around 90 degrees to face his opponent. Before he knew it, several other tendrils had come forth and latched onto his warhammer. The tentacles made a sizzling sound as they touched the silvery steel, but remain intact long enough to spin it around 360 degrees, forcing Ostel to let go of the shaft not to break his wrist and sending the heavy hammerhead falling into the sand with a heavy thud.

With a single powerful pull, Ostel tore off the black tendrils that were curled around his forearm and slowly attempting to creep upwards, before turning to pick up his hammer, only to find that Aegar had been faster and positioned himself between Ostel and Dawnbringer, which was still shining brightly in its position in the sand. “So what now, oh Sage of Light?” Aegar spoke mockingly.

In response the human pulled out another set of hand weapons, one of which seemed to be a throwing axe and the other a short hunting knife, "I'm thinking you better shut your mouth Demon." With that Ostel charged the demon headfirst, offering no sense of defense as he did before with his warhammer.

Adding to Aegar's discomfort was the fact that Ostel's Sphere had lessened, but only so he could augment his figure in a blinding light that made the human had to focus on. The demon's tendrils offered no support right now as he had to focus on Ostel, and with the frenzy of movement the human displayed the demon could no longer pin the sage of light down. To his credit, the Sage of Light was able to keep Aegar on his toes with this unexpected dual weapon approach.

However, Ostel's moves had now become undisciplined, without any sense of coordination with his attacks. All Aegar had to do was try to keep his cool and recognize a pattern in the human's advances. It hurt his eyes to look on Ostel for too long, but the demon did notice that Ostel tended to go for a torso attack followed by a feint to the legs. Thus Aegar adapted and counter- feinted when the sage of light struck his legs, throwing Ostel off balance and again Aegar unleashed his tendrils to great effect and tore away both weapons.

Before Aegar could taunt the human again however, Ostel drew out his bastard sword. At the continued defiance Aegar rolled his eyes and said in a mildly annoyed tone, "You just do not accept defeat do you?"

The Sage of Light wiped a bit of sweat off his brow and flexed his broad shoulders before he answered between his labored breathing, "If you tire off this fight Aegar, you can always surrender." The Demon laughed a bit at that, and even Ostel chuckled a bit. Both of them knew the human had lost at this point, but it seemed that the human was determined to resist until he had no way to fight back.

So Aegar fought him again, this time having to adapt to Ostel's approach with this new weapon. However, unlike the warhammer, and the axe and dagger, it seemed like the sword in Ostel's hands fit him better than any of his other equipment. The twin blades of Aegar fought hard to gain any kind of opening into Ostel's pattern, but the human was keeping up with him. Alternating between a series of kicks, tendril grabs and flurry of slashes, Aegar tried it all to force Ostel to break under his onslaught.

But the Sage of Light held, even as his sphere lessened and lost ground to the demon's attacks. When Aegar sensed a weakness, he sent both of his blades into a hammer motion to break Ostel's guard, but Ostel was waiting for that. The human dove under the attack, striking Aegar's midsection with the pommel of his blade, kicking in his kneecap and then upon spinning behind, sending the back of his blade into the Demon's back.

Aegar's mind flared with rage, and he unleashed all of his power, with dark tendril's again jetting out of the ground, grabbing Ostel's form and forcing the human to struggle with the dark magic. It was then that Aegar then coldly and forcefully hammered away at Ostel, until with both the aid of the tendrils and the force of his blows, the human’s last weapon was cast aside.

The Demon then swiftly brought both of his blades forward to Ostel's neck before a split second had passed. And there Aegar stopped and eyed the Sage fo Light threateningly, as if daring him to make a move. With the tendrils holding him down and Aegar's blades to his neck, Ostel ceased his struggling. He shoke his head, hung his head low, and the light from the human dimmed.

After a few seconds had passed and the heavy breathing subsided, the Sage of Light nodded his head in acceptance of his defeat, "You win, Aegar. Well fought. I guess if there is a good way to die, may as well of been to a better fighter. So what happens now?" Ostel asked as he looked to the X pattern of the blades around his neck.

Aegar remained silent for a few seconds, looking down at the human with unmoving grey eyes that gave away little of his intentions. Then his expression softened up ever so slightly, as far as you could call it that, and the aura of darkness that surrounded him became a little less intense.

As the anger that clouded his mind slowly began ebbing away, his awareness of their general surroundings returned to him and he soon noticed from the corner of his eye that the two of them were not alone in here anymore. He raised his gaze and looked around, keeping his blades still in their current position, to see a surprising amount of students that had crowded up in the arena entrance and along the far wall and were watching them in surprising silence.

At the front of the herd of students, standing out from the grey mass, were the four remaining sages. Both girls had a distraught expression on their face visible even from a distance, with especially Calixta looking like she could start screaming bloody murder at any moment. Damien was standing between them with a hand on each girl’s shoulder, as if to hold them back from intervening, and Jade Fist looked as stoic and unreadable as always.

Aegar brought his gaze back down to Ostel, still showing barely any emotion, before slowly lowering his swords away from the human’s neck and eventually sheathing them. “I’ll give you this.” he said, while the grip of the inky black tendrils began loosening. “You fight surprisingly well for a noble.” As if commanded to, the black tentacles let go completely and let themselves fall to the ground to begin dissolving. “From now on I’ll call you a knight of autumn.” Aegar stuck out his hand to the crouched Sage of Light. “Get up, you can’t let the girls see you like this.” he said with the slightest hint of a joking tone.

Ostel hesitated very briefly, but then grabbed onto the demon’s hand and pulled himself onto his feet. They both turned towards the group of students that had amassed near the entrance, who all looked to be dumbfounded by the course of events. Summer, Calixta and Damien had visibly calmed down now, though a grumpy expression was still visible on Calla’s face. Jade Fist still looked like Jade Fist.

Aegar wasted little more time on words as he walked towards the entrance, acting towards their audience as if what they just saw was an everyday thing. “What, never seen a sparring match?” he said sarcastically as he made his way through the mass of students and out of the practice arena, leaving the spectators looking even more surprised than before.
