ShidenBlades Here to have fun!

Good afternoon everyone!

I have to say, I like the arena that’s set up, though I've an itch to create my own. Just not sure what the general populaces feel is on tournaments and if the effort I put into it would be worth the return. So, I'd like to propose my setting for said tournament and if I feel confident enough about the response I'll go ahead and work away at it.

First, the setting would not be the multiverse that we all know and love. I would create a setting in a very sand-box like medieval fantasy world. Reason for that being; A) I want to rule out guns and advanced technology, B) I can create a universal system for magic/supernatural abilities that assures everyone is on even footing, and C) I find the tier sort of system that’s currently in place to be less than ideal, therefore everyone would be on the same 'tier' in this.

Second, putting aside the story for now and focusing on the mechanics of the tournament I believe that limiting the setting to the Fantasy/Medieval type but keeping it a sand-box will allow people to become creative with their characters origins. I don't want to say 'no you can't play this character', but rather 'I like what you did here, but let’s change X so it fits in with Y.'

Third, I won’t be taking part in the tournament directly. I'd control NPC's and if anyone wanted to have a 'thread' between a fight in the Advanced RP area I would down for that. There might be the occasional special match where one of the contestants in the tournament (or several), would fight some particularly nasty beast.

Fourth, magic and any other supernatural ability will have a drawback. I'm a big believer in the 'nothing is free' train of thought. There is no straight benefit/power without it costing something in return. The strength of said ability being directly proportionate to its drawback.

Anyways that’s just what I’ve been kicking around and wanted to garner interest before I put any more work into the story and specific rules.

I like this. I'm very new to Arena RP, but I'd rather have a story to go with it. I'm up for helping with any details you can't nail down. If nothing, I can just help you bounce ideas around if you need the help. Either way, I'm in.

Why do people assume arena fights don't have stories?

@Skallagrim As a personal opinion I believe that most people tend to sacrifice story to win. In general I find that people tend to get wrapped up in powers and winning. Granted, that is an arenas purpose, winning. So I don't fault anyone. My own preference for what I look for in an arena just seems to be slightly different than that of the majority.

If that has been your experience maybe, but among the regulars in the arena stories are important to advance character development. Fighting without purpose is fine for one offs but for the majority of fights require some story element for their character

@Skallagrim Well, I haven't been in any arenas before, so I don't know. I'm not dissing it. I've just previously only seen tournament-style fighting with little-to-no outside chat. This was honestly the first one that I saw when I entered the sub-forum so yeah.

You already stated that. I understand you are new and made assumptions based on the concept of arena.

I'd like to start a new world. That'd be cool. I was just looking at the Arena battles recently and apparantly these people have fought to the death like 20 times before. Explained away because of THE MULTIVERSE! How about instead of "people fighting to kill the other guy because of tournament" we have actual in-story problems, like a feud between two clans or something, and that is our motivation to fight eachother.

Not sure how tournaments would work though. Maybe the tournament part could be OOC, and the fights just take place in that order because of IC reasons?

Actually, that's what the multiverse is trying to achieve.

You do understand the multiverse does what you want to do and the tournaments do advance character/ faction elements.

Too many people want to start new worlds instead of helping build the one already in place.

I was thinking of permadeath or something

respawning and stuff
kinda removes the weight of it all

Ah, nevermind. I guess building new worlds is just too taboo for something like roleplaying.

in all seriousness, I understand. it's just intimidating to dive into "the multiverse" will all of these rivalries going on already. just some tournament for newbies would be fun, get our feet wet

The main problem is that there were tons of worlds gathering dust and spreading people out. We can building new worlds over time.

The actual multiverse hasn't really started yet in it's reboot. My characters haven't gotten anything typed up yet in ways of rivalries even if I do have some plans in the works.

People can have permadeath if you choose but loosing your character in the multiverse forever, if you really like them and want to use them some more, wouldn't be fun for a lot of people.

There is going to be noob tourney. We are currently in the end of the year NoW event. But you can join the NoW lobby where a multiversal event will take place. Get to know other fighters and participate. You can craft a character, have the community review it to help balance it. The most important thing is to become active.

Just focus on the idea of worlds colliding as the difference between space and time gets all wonky, that's how I work my head around it. If you just keep in mind that integral to the world most of us who have loitered around Arena are trying to make is a vast number of diverse worlds and peoples all being thrown at each other by what essentially amounts to wormholes you realise you can literally tow an entire world of your own into the Multiverse and no one will bat an eyelid. Hell, bring in an entire empire, or on the flip side a humble tavern keeper, it's really completely up to you.

I wouldn't worry too much about the past, there really isn't that much to catch up on, and the chances it will influence you aint all that high. There are a few remnants of past attempts still stuck to the Multiverse, but that's mostly out of our desires to not have years of past stories mean completely nothing, there's still plenty of room for new people to engage the multiverse, and most people will probably be jumping in completely fresh anyway.

Try it, there's something immensely satisfying about having an encounter in Arena mean something in regards to the bigger picture, or not, that can also be interesting.

@Stekkmen Melon gave you the best advice. Get involved. The only way to become dynamic in the arena is get involved.
