THE AGE OF NATIONS

SUMMER, 1836

Zellonia

With a stagnating colonial presence, and the King's recent decision to deploy several thousand troops into the Murelian crisis, the rumblings of the lower class had started to be more audible. In a major port city on the eastern coast, a street side gathering of a few dozen started sometime in the early morning. Patrolling constables noticed it and stepped in almost immediately, citing several tickets and arresting two men responsible for the rabble rousing. Someone threw a rock, knocking one of the officers down and the crowd turned mad. The two police officers, attempting to haul the two men off were rushed by the gathering, severely beaten by the overwhelming number of protesters.

With blood on their hands, the crowd turned riotous and moved willfully down the street toward the ports. By midday the crowd had gathered several thousands and the mayor of the city had sent word to the nearby garrison to mobilize and help put the riot down. 350 Zellonian Regulars met the protestors at the gate of the docks, with a very prim and proper Captain immediately ordering the crowd to disperse. The standoff lasted only seconds. The crowd charged in and the soldiers opened fire. The front row was cut like wheat from the scythe but the soldiers were overwhelmed without time to reload or fix bayonets. The Captain yanked out his saber and cut several men down before being dragged to the floor and killed with a bayonet stolen off one of his own men.

Those not involved looked on in horror as the crowd boarded two of the ships docked there, a Third Rate and a First Rate. Without obstacle and after some mild trouble, they managed to start a fire upon both ships. They cheered and danced as flames licked at the sky, the ships smoldering in the very water they sat. As the sun finally began to sat on the horizon, the crowd petered out, eventually dispersing into the night. When military officials finally built up the courage to take an armed escort back into the port, they found the First Rate had been burned so bad it would have to be scuttled, and the Third Rate would need six months worth of repairs. Another garrison would need to be installed into the city.

While the snows melted and turned the harsh Anvegad steppes into a cool and mild summer, the graduating class of 1836 of the Anvegad Military Academy was shaping up to be a promising endeavor. Completing the entirety of his studies in two thirds of the regular length that it took many of his contemporaries, Lieutenant Pavel Tarkov, originally of the Anvegad Cavalry exemplified himself as not only a competent student and brilliant tactical mind, but as a self proclaimed military genius. So audacious was he, that upon his hasty graduation, he admitted a 51 page length paper detailing several daring plans for offensive military operations against neighboring states, as well as the Boletarian Commonwealth that would allow success based upon the strengths of Anvegad's military and the weakness of those. Members of the Anvegadian High Command reviewed the documents at length and found them risky, if not suicidal. When asked, Tarkov simply announced that many of those men, while proud Anvegadians, were members of a dying Old Guard, not fit for the future of the Anvegadian military.

Several members of the High Command voiced their opinion that this man is simply dangerous and should be relegated to a minor command, while a few others felt that they might be onto something much more grand than that. As a member of the graduating class, Tarkov's future assignment is in the hands of the Anvegadian commanders. He has made it well known however that he is an Anvegadian nationalist, and no matter his post, he will serve it to the best of his ability.

The Sino-Sanguine Mutual Defence Treaty of 1836

Understanding safety and security to be a nation's top priority, The Imperial Authority of the Sanguine Empire proposes to the sovereign of the Kingdom of Sinesia a pact of mutual defence, to entail these conditions:

* If one nation is attacked, the other shall declare war on its attacker, and do everything in its power to aid the defender.

* During times of conflict, the two nations will allow military access to each other's territories and facilities, until such a time that the conflict is resolved.

* The two nations will not negotiate a peace within the conflict separate from the other. Conditions of victory must be agreed upon by both nations. Conditions of surrender are exempt from this.

[X] King Quinn 'The Guard' of Sinesia

The Braiyusal Expedition

The Braiyusal expedition of Summer, 1836 was abysmal. Onset by harsh storms and sickness, the men fought and bickered among one another along the trip, several times contemplating returning. The natives were the only positive. Friendly, several times they approached the group and offered food when none could be found in the local area, and on the 14th day they offered respite during a tumultuous thunderstorm for the expedition. The Braiyusals, who realized they were the first to have ever come across these people (overlooking the initial Zellonian expeditions of the 1400's), named them the Sithiki people. They journeyed on, following along a thick forest until they saw the silhouette of a mountain in the northwest.

Braiyusal Expedition, Summer 1836

The expedition eventually left Sithiki lands behind and moved inland. In June, they camped along the river in the shadow of the great mountain. That night, they were beset by several dozen natives wearing heavy furs. These natives were unfriendly, and in a frighteningly threatening standoff, a Braiyusalan Captain named Alfonso shot and killed one of them. The gunshot scared the rest off, but several in the party admonished the Captain for his cowardice.

Days later, the expedition journeyed north to the mountain and studied it and the surrounding area for several days. While they found trace amounts of iron, it was a three man journey into an immense crevasse that brought joy to the party. Gold. More than had ever been seen in the Old World, even in the depths of the Murelian kingdom, where gold flowed like water. The largest gold deposit in the history of the world, Old and New alike.

The Sanguine Empire

A censor recently taken by the sociologist Karwin Bogdin of the Sanguine Empire has finally compiled a list of the various cultures of the vast, Eastern nation. His findings, published in the Summer of 1836 as The Compendium of People's of the Eastern Nations under the Sanguine, was uninteresting to those outside of political spheres, but it found an immensely important revelation that the Sanguine had since not realized. The Ambrosians, a prominent cultural group in the empire, now make up 42% of the entire population. This near majority has created some very real consternation among the upper class. With their own cultural norms and traditions, many fear that in a few decades they may be clambering for dominance of their own rights in the nation.

Other sociologists of the era dismissed this, citing the Ambrosians natural inclination to larger familial units and last decades great harvest as an explanation. As the other cultures grow as well, the Ambrosians will dip back into joining the others as prominent, but less numerous compared to the population as a whole. Karwin, as an Ambrosian himself, was written off by the Sanguine as a brooding nationalist and his work mostly as inept propaganda.

A Dalatrian economist has published his World Index, a lengthy work citing the organization of the world. The dalatrian, named Jeremy Halthorne, has ranked the Great Powers by virtue of their economic output, industrial might, military prowess and colonial resources. He has come under flak for not ranking his own nation, the United Kingdoms of Dalatrum, less than first, though he often cites that he is more interested in the truth, and not a nationalist agenda for his own nation. His rankings, for the year of 1836 are as follows.

1. The Commonwealth of Boletaria: On a scale of 1 to 100, the Boletarian Commonwealth rates 75 in Prestige, and is unarguably the most powerful nation in the world. Though Halthorne cites the lack of industrial modernization and no colonial presence, the unity of these people have surpassed most of these errors.

2. Zellonian Empire: Barely losing out to the Boletarian Commonwealth on a scale of 1 to 100, the Zellonian Empire has a ranking of 74 Prestige on Halthorne's scale. With the largest naval fleet the world has ever seen, it is unlikely than any one single nation could ever defeat the Zellonian Imperial Navy. With a disunited franchise at home and only a meager colonial presence, Halthorne cites that without it's navy, Zellonia might not rank as a Great Power at all.

3. Skeptonian Imperium: With a promising political imperium and a navy that itself is worthy of acclaim, the Skeptonians rank number third with an overall rating of 63 Prestige. Only now beginning to colonize and explore Serranthia, Halthorne cites the eminent cultural significance of the Skeptonian people as a reason for being the third most powerful in the world.

4. Nehalanian Kingdom: With an overall ranking of 54 prestige, the Nehalanian Kingdom is fourth on the list. Though with an impressive navy, the majority of this ranking stems from the immense industrial and economic might of the nation.

5. United Kingdoms of Dalatrum: Only just making the list at 43 Prestige, the United Kingdoms of Dalatrum eclipse Great Power status, and only just so. Without an emphasis on anything in particular, Dalatrum is riding a status awarded to them in 1750 and may very well be simply place holding until another, more ambitious power takes their spot.

Braiyusalian-Amazonian Trade

Due to a heavy presence in the Western Sides, on March 17th, 1836 the Nehalanian Royal Navy intercepted a lone Braiyusalian trading frigate along the northern shores of the Western Sides coast. Patrolling there while conducting shore raiding operations against the Amazonian tribes, the vessel was flagged down but refused to stop. The Nehalanian Second Rate fired a volley just shy of the ship and the Braiyusalian vessel dropped anchor. Upon boarding, the Nehalanians discovered that the vessel was carrying crates of ammunition and rifles, though the Braiyusalian captain said this was for the colonial garrison.

The decision to supply the Amazonians to undermine the Nehalanians, a rival colonial power, was a bold one. The Braiyusalian King was applauded in many circles for his decision to stand up to a Great Power, especially an auspiciously and ambitiously imperialistic one. However, trouble has found its way to the Western Sides. The BNV Kilos has disappeared. Carrying over 500 muskets and shot, it left Braiyusal and landed in Colonial Braiyusal twenty-two days later. Restocking for supplies, it set sell across the inlet toward the Amazonian coast. It did not return. Whether because of a storm, bad navigation, or worse, supplies to the Amazonians has been temporarily stopped while the colonial governor asks for leadership from the Home Island.

Unbeknownst to the Braiyusalians, the Nehalanians immediately towed the captured vessel back to New Nehalania for the time being.

The Queendom of Amazonia

Summer 1836

Now since the crops had been planted and all that the Amazonians needed to do was wait for the autumn harvest, the Amazonians were now free to take up arms and wage war against their neighbors. During the summer, it was ritual for the Amazonians to send out a small force out to undertake a raid against any village that has not sought protection under the Queendom of Amazonia. In these raids, the Amazonians would slay all the men within the village, assimilate any women (young and old) that they could, and throw into servitude any young males that happen to survive the slaughter. However, due to relations between some of the neighboring tribes, including the Zanoni, has been becoming amicable, the Amazonians had to find targets farther and farther away from their borders.

Once the raiding party had been assembled from the Amazonian population, the inhabitants of Amazonia performed a sacrifice dedicated to Athene Parthenos so that the virginal goddess of strategy would look over their war-band, since, as was proper in Amazonian tradition, women had to slay a man before she could marry. While this tradition is not always followed to the tee, those who do will always have first pick at their husband. Before the war-band left the borders of the Amazonian Queendom, a small embassy was set out to the Tribes of the Zanoni and the Sirithi in order to secure safe passage through their lands. Due to the this diplomatic situation, many speculated that the Fiwa Tribes might be the Queendom's selected target. However, there was no official statement about where this war-band was heading.

In the wake of the Nehalenian bombardment of the Amazonian coastline, the Amazonians have reinforced the northern shore, especially at where the Thermodon empties out into the Bay of Myrine by stationing the few cannons that they had so far received from the Braiyusalians and building up earthen-mounds that would help cover those cannons so that they could more efficiently protect the coast. However, one of the shipments had not arrived. Therefore, the "ambassador" stationed in Themiscyra wrote back to the authorities in Colonial Braiyusal to send word to the homeland to alert them in the disappearance of the ship and his own testimony that the Amazonians never received the ship, nor did they capture it.

The Oslad Federation

Oslograde, June 3rd, 1836

The new year has already shaped greatly into a new dawn for the Oslad Federation. Financial Minister Fjor Lashkov has, since February, struggled with crafting a new naval and economic plan for the Federation, and at last his results shine. The ships shall sail across the western coast alongside our new economic partners in Skeptoni and Zellon. Lashkov's vision of a western sea economic pact has, at last, begun to see it's fruition.

The 'West-Sea Trade Agreement' consists of the following.

1) Oslad, Skeptoni, and Zellon shall escort their partners merchant ships and vice versa.

2) All partner nations shall open their ports to the other partner nations.

The goal of the economic pact is to open the markets for the newly budding companies in the west and to ensure economic stability within Oslad and the other powers involved in the agreement.

The Mikassian Tribes

Meatopia, June 5th, 1836

Upon his return War Chief Chatan was welcomed home with a great celebration of his victory in pushing back the ebbing tide of the southern desert tribes, slaying their leader and completely demoralizing the remaining forces, his renown as a mighty warrior spreading as fire does in this season. These hearty celebrations have now all but died down, Chatan sits in the council chamber, surrounded by his closest and most loyal friends.

"Our scouts report a large chunk of the Tangled Isle has been taken. An Old World nation under a burning tree and a sea of red ha taken residence there, Chief." Rugha Windspeed spoke quickly and to the point, waving his hand over the map that lay before them all, pointing to the Tangled Isles western shore.

"Too many allies cannot benefit us Chatan, we must drive at least one of these foreign forces back. Back to their own lands." Zass spoke openly, being Chatan's oldest friend. His tongue was sharp and occasionally hurtful, but he spoke only the truth in Chatan's presence.

Leaning back into the furs of his chair, Chatan brought his hands up to his face and brushed away any devilish thoughts that may have been ready to pounce upon his unsuspecting mouth. Happy with the lack of bad influence and with the feedback from his loyals, he spoke.

"Amass a war party Zass, strong enough to combat and defeat these men with ease. Send the trident ships along the narrow pass and ferry them across, set up a camp and await my messengers. Stay hidden and do not disturb a single grass blade until you have your orders." Zass nodded in confirmation, bowing his feathered head as he retreated from the room to gather his riders.

Turning to Rugha, Chatan placed his hand upon the map, over the red mountains in the west of the Makasi lands.
"If we are to wage war upon a foe, it will be with our best axe and our sharpest arrows. Reform your personal scouts and take some stone cutters from the southern tribes. I need you to find and begin construction on mines and excavation sites for metal we can use. Go, go!" Chatan rolled up the map and pressed it into Rugha's chest, pushing him from the room.

"The rest of you should ready your men for war, increase training. we outnumber the enemy vastly in full force, but I want to use as few men as I can to crush these peoples."

With this last statement the rest of the war council left the chamber and Chatan was left alone, he began scrawling a message for the burning tree men on a stretched hide panel, this would be sent and translated immediately.

Troops move across the northern sea pass and camp awaiting orders. Relations with natives are neutral and so the men should tread lightly. They will be ferried across on three third rate ships.

Mustering for war: 1 point spent on training.

Searching for ore, metal, anything useful to the war effort should one come.

Sanguine War of Aggression (1836-Ongoing)
1. Battle of Lujdic (Ongoing)

Impoverished and alienated from the western Great Powers by virtue of distance and culture, the Kingdom of Kapitas existed solely on the basis of it's strong defensive terrain and the fact that simply no one else deemed the land important enough to capture. The Sanguine Empire, a lumbering regional power to the east however, set its sights on the decadent kingdom in the summer of 1836.

Mobilizing an army of nearly 200,000, the Sanguine sent their declaration on July 9th, and by July 15th had crossed the Kapitan border and were headed toward a definitive throw down with the Kapitan Army, itself still attempting to mobilize itself to confront the sudden invasion by its eastern neighbors.

Under the young and ambitious General Varmuth, the Sanguine 3rd Army, numbering only 25,000 regulars with a heavy supply detachment, entered Kapitas through the Karas Forest region. His goal was to capture the northern region, where Sanguine spies had indicated was free of Kapitan military presence. Within two weeks Varmuth forces had captured the provincial capital of Lujdic, while the Sanguine Army elsewhere performed a wild pincer mover to encircle the entire country. It was Sanguine intelligence however, that proved to be wrong. Scouts that discovered an encroaching Kapitan Army alerted Varmuth immediately, and he immediately moved to mobilize his army and meet them in battle. Because his subordinates had earlier requested detachments to help govern the Provisional Government of Kapitan Sanguine, his army was 7,000 men lighter. Regardless, the men were ordered into marching formation and ordered north along the road out of Lujdic.

Battle of Lujdic, 1836

Outside of Lujdic, Varmuth ordered his regulars into a line against the incoming Kapitans. Two hours later, just before noon, riders approached and learned that Kapitans were marching south along the road from the Kapitan Pass in northwest Kapitas and closing on the Third Army fast. Outnumbered and without cannon, General Varmuth's options were limited. Varmuth, if nothing else, knew that his army had been a tertiary force, and even its destruction and his death would not mean much in the grand scheme of the war.

Kingdom of Braiyusal
Summer 1836

Braiyusalian Elections

After several weeks of debate, fleeting promises, and political espionage the Braiyusalian Elections where at an end. The first man to come out on top was Sir Derric, who won by several votes in a somewhat surprising outcome. Well founded, he was able to get the votes he needed from the common people. Next was Lord Tibost, whose almost extremist reactionary views won him the vote. Some are even calling it a second calling for greatness in Braiyusal, others whisper that it was outside funding that won him his seat. Last was Count Radulf II, the liberal votes had won him a seat. People hope that he will counteract the reactionary views of Lord Tibost, and possibly lessen the conservative grip over the nation and her people.

Several hours after the ceremony, King Rolfe congratulated all three senators on their victory and officially granted them the title Senator, and gave a somewhat cliche speech. “Gathered here today, on April 1st, 1836, the people come to watch three men sworn in by their countrymen. These men shall protect, serve, and honor those who have put their faith into thee, and with that trust bring greatness not only upon yourself, but upon the nation and her people. Braiyusal has given you a chance, do not waste it.” The three senators swore their vows and took their name.

Amazonian Trade

King Rolfe sat quietly in front of the Senate reading a recently recieved message from the Queen of Amazonia. “It seems we may have a problem, though not entirely confirmed, one of our merchant ships carrying Braiyusalian weapons may have been caught by Nehelanian Ships. From what I understand we haven’t found any signs of the ship, it is still possible it may have been shipwrecked by a storm.” The gathered senators sat confused, waiting for Rolfe to finish his thought. “Though not required of you, I come asking advice. You are all educated men.”

The senate for once was quick to respond. Agreeing that it might be best to simply protect Amazonian trade with a stronger fleet. This however didn’t last long, soon came the arguments on how large of a fleet. They didn’t want to attract attention from Nehelenia if they haven’t already, but at the same time wanted to prepare for an immediate threat. King Rolfe interrupted “I’ve decided. We shall send a two first rates, one will lead a small fleet to defend Amazonian trade consisting of 6 Third rates and 3 second rates. The other shall be stationed in the colony in case of an attack by Nehelenia accompanied by 3 third rate ships and one more second rate. Only the first rate and second rate will remain docked however as we can use the third rates to protect other trade along the routes. It will spread our navy thin, but this is a dire situation.”

Several days later the BNV Nicolet and BNV Nicholaus, to first rates accompanied by a fleet of third and second rate ships set sail for the new world. The official statement behind this move was simple “As the world progresses so do the dangers. This is our best chances to face those dangers head on and without fear.”

Colonial Expedition

With the newly found gold in the new world Braiyusal was quick to react. Outposts had begun to spring up in the area, and Braiyusal had begun to trade with the friendly natives reported earlier, and has chosen to ignore the more aggressive ones, but around one hundred men had been stationed in the area in case of attack.

The Sanguine Empire

After the unveiling of Bogdin's paper, there were many at court and in society who wished to know how this might change policy toward the possible representation of subjects in their own government. During a dinner with several guests, the Emperor made this statement in response:

"How this Bogdin's recent dissertation has been on our society's lips! While this study is enlightening, it changes nothing. It is the decision of each family for their locality, and the authority of the Emperor as to what extent their subjects are allowed self-governance. And I say, with my authority, that nothing will be imposed on any member of society in light of this revelation."

This statement was allowed to be taken for Bittle's newspaper, while society did its own work in talking about it. This reassuring viewpoint was echoed by many noble families. Many now say "If it isn't broke, don't fix it," in response to the demographic survey.

~ * ~

Soldiers stamped across a majestic meadow of pale golds from dandelions, and bright, shining greens from tall grass.

Nearly two hundred thousand men had been assembled in the drill yards days ago. It was an awesome task of logistics and preparation to get the men ready, let alone split into several armies. But it was done. The Empire's position was secured earlier in the year through various key actions, and now they stood at the precipice of realizing their latest ambition: to become not only the dominant force in the eastern Old World, but to show that the Sanguine Empire was a nation worthy of recognition among the Great Powers. It was much a matter of prestige as a matter of conquest.

After the invasion had been set in motion, a missive was sent via courier to the Kingdom of Kapitas' court. It was a declaration of war, coupled with a note. It read:

"To the Royal Authority of the Kingdom of Kapitas,

By the authority of command over the Sanguine Empire's armed forces, a state of war has been hereby declared. This state shall persist until both ruling sovereigns shall come to an agreement to its conclusive end.

If it is his soverign's wish that the war end, here below is listed the condition needed to be met for an agreement toward such:

1.) Total surrender from the armed forces of the Kingdom of Kapitas to the Imperial Authority of the Sanguine Empire

2.) Subjugation as a client state under the mercy of the Imperial Authority of the Sanguine Empire

3.) A payment of 10,000 coins in reparations

If these conditions are not agreed upon, war will continue, with the intent to annex the Kingdom of Kapitas into the Sanguine Empire.

May the Saint bring forth the rightworthy victor,

- The Imperial Authority of the Sanguine Empire"

Port Valhal – New Nehalenia

The Nehalenian expeditionary force returned from their trip to recover the RNN Victory that had been illigaly captured by the Amazonians. The trip ended up to be non-satisfactory as the Royal Navy proved to be unable to reach a diplomatic solution and was not able to locate the ship in order to recapture it with force. The coastal raid, capture of some Amazonian women and the captured Braiyusal vesse; where only a small bandage for the wounded Nehalenian pride. When news of the lost ship and failed expedition reached the king all actors where immediately summoned to the capital for a meeting with the government in order to explain this failure.

Ostara – Capital of Nehalenia

All government officials had taken their seats in the grand meeting hall and stared at the same two men who stood lower then the rest. Today the Nehalenian government was going to question Admiral Gorthan and WSC board member Argibald Duvail about the loss of the RNN Victory.

Justin Valor, minister of the navy was enraged. “How in the lords name did the WSC manage to lose a first rate ship to a bunch of undeveloped savages. That is simply unacceptable! That For this utter failure alone some heads should roll! Who was the appointed captain mister Duvail?”

Mr duvail awnserd calmly “Percy Duvail, my son. He was a graduate from the naval academy without prior real-life experience. I used my influence as a board member to place him on a high spot. As a father I overestimated my sons abilities as a captain. A great misjudgment with a desasterous outcome. I accept the punishment the government sees fit.”

All the government officials where silent as Duvail admitted his own failure and actions. Everybody expected it to be a long talk. It was king George Therus III himself who broke the silence. “ Argibald Duvail is hereby expelled from the board of the Western Sides Company. Furthermore he will stand trial in the Nehalenian court for corruption and abuse of his powers. Now we move on to why the expedition failed to retrieve the ship. Care to explain why you could not come to a diplomatic conclusion Admiral Gorthan?”

The Admiral stepped forward with his back straight. Ready to deliver his plea on the situation. “The expedition was hastily assembled. Some of the ships where still undergoing repairs in Port Valhal when the order was given to set sail. Once the order was given there was not much room for preparation. In my opinion the expedition was poorly prepared. Also the Amazonians proved to be hard to impress, They refused any form of a diplomatic solution. They even took the diplomatic party hostage and tried to use their lives as a bargain to keep the ship. At that moment it was clear that they would not give in to our demands. This might be because Braiyusal is supplying them with firearms and cannons.”

The king wasn't surprised that Braiyusal was trying to disrupt Nehalenian plans for the new world. They where still disgruntled over their loss of the war. However the Nehalenian influence in the old world is being challenged by many severely limiting the options in foreign policy. “Admiral Gorthan, what kind of force do you think is nessecary to subdue the Amazonians?”

The Admiral was a bit surprised by this question. “The Amazonian navy is closely to non-existent. However their land forces appear to be numerous. Some say they command an army of 75.000av warriors, other say they have hundreds of thousands of fighting men at their exposal. I believe we will need at least 65.000 men in order to achieve a total victory over the Queendom of Amazonia.”
The king nodded. “I allow you a change to redeem yourself Gorthan. You will assist in drawing up the invasion plans and execute the naval operations against. On the topic of Braiyusal, just trade is not enough of a casus belli to justify war. We'll send their government a strong message to stay out of our business.”

Foreign minister Herald Omen took the word. “The greatest challenges we face in the old world is that we increasingly stand alone while other powers increasingly seek coorperation on many levels. We can no longer afford to sail an independent course as the combined might of our neighbors rival our own. We should make haste of increasing our relations with our neighbors and beyond.”

The whole government agreed on that point. For most of the 18th century Nehalenia was the leading power due to its aggressive colonial expansion and the wealth that brought. Neighboring nations however had developed rapidly and closed the gaps in influence.

Mordred Daltry, chairman of the Serranthian trading Company asked for everyone's attention. “My king and ministers, we've recently received this alarming message from a far away tribe in Serrantia.” The STC chairman read the message in front of the entire government.

From the Mikassian tribes:

Burning tree, this message comes as you are at our doorstep. We would speak with you, refuse and blood shall be shed. Chatan, War chief, Mikassian Tribes.

For a moment the chairman paused before he continued to speak. “We believe this Mikassian tribe is located at the other side of the Bay of Cavalle. We do not know much about this civilization but we consider this a serious treat to the Nehalenian interest in the region. The STC urges the government to re-enforce the military presence in the region with a significant naval detachment and a strong fighting force.”

With this message the prospect of war loomed on two fronts far away from home. A situation that is not very favorable but hard to avoid.

The Nehalenian Armada sets sail
Over the past weeks the Nehalenian high command has been planning a full scale invasion of the Queendom of Amazonia. Hundreds of transport and merchant ships have been gathered to ferry a massive invasion force of 65.000 men, equipment and supplies across the sea to the distant land of the new world. This massive transport fleet is escorted by 10 3th rates, 8 second rates and 3 first rate ship of the lines.

As the first light shines upon the ports of Nehalenia the womenfolk wave their men goodbye. The red flag with the golden tree shines high above the ships as they unfold their white sails. It was a spectacular sight to see so many ships leave the ports and form an orderly fleet. The spirits where high all across Nehalenia and everybody was expecting a quick victory over these savages in the Western Sides.

At the same time a second fleet was assembled in the Western Sides colonies of Nehalenia. This fleet consists of all the ships involved in the previous expedition but was now re-enforced with additional transport capacity. The second fleet is carrying an additional 10.000 soldiers from the Nehalenian colonies into the direction of the Queendom of Amazonia.

Serrantia Trading Corporation announcement.

In the light of the recent contact with the Mikassian Tribes we will re-enforce our military presence in Serrantia with 24.000 soldiers, 5 third rates, 3 second rates and a first rate ship of the line.

LATE SUMMER UPDATE

(July, 1836)

Serranthia, 1836

SANGUINE WAR OF AGGRESSION (1836-Ongoing)

Battle of Lujdic (1836)
General Varmuth, though ambitious, was simply ill equipped to handle the incoming Kapitan Army. Taken to the field, he deployed his men against the Kapitan Army and fought them tooth and nail, the Sanguine regulars proving to be much more tough than their counterparts. His decision to fall back however destroyed any chance of victory. With his left flank being rolled up by the approach of the Kapitan II Corps, the Sanguine turned into a full retreat, without any semblance of order or structure.

Deploying into lines, the Kapitan II Corps linked up with the Kapitan Army, creating a 58,000 men strong formation that pushed the Sanguine back into Lujdic. With only 5,500 left, Varmuth fought a delaying action for sixteen hours until he was forced to surrender. The Sanguine's attempt to take the entire northern front of Kapitas with only 25,000 men had failed in spectacular fashion. The people of Lujdic danced the night away, much to the chagrin of General Varmuth and his men, now officially prisoners of war.

Battle of Kjudavo Pass (1836)
The Sanguine Second Army under General Bancaster, not to be confused with his younger brother, Captain Bancaster, was leading the first army. A stoic man, he cared a great deal for the glory and honour of his prestigious family. Sweeping into Kapitas along the Muthandian border, he marched 70,000 men and 10,000 cavalry toward the Kjudavo Pass, hoping to break into the more industrialized western steppes of Kapitas.

He was met by the Kapitan Army at the pass however. Less of a pass and more of a political safeguard, the Kapitans had the safety of the Muthandia border on their left and the great mountains on their right. With the greater size of the Sanguine neutralized, they felt better equipped to take on the larger army. The Kapitans had mobilized only 48,000 to the defense of the pass.

The bloodiest affair of the whole war, the Battle of Kjudavo Pass became a ceremonial blood letting as regiments traded fire, were worn down and simply replaced by another regiment. Three times Sanguine cavalry charged against Kapitan lines, only to be repulsed and pulled back. With the sun at it's highest point, General Bancaster finally noticed the Kapitans, having taken over 15,000 casualties slowly withdrawing from the field. The Sanguine Army itself had taken 8,000 casualties on foot and 5,000 on horse. The way to the Kapitan steppes however, was open.

Nehalanian-Sirithi Pact

Greetings,

For too long your people have been on the receiving end of Amazonian raids. Your women captured and your men enslaved. The time has come to rise up against the Amazonian dominance and fight for your people in conjunction with the Nehalenian forces. The Nehalenian king offers the following agreement to the Sirthi people:

1. Arean alliance against the Amazonians
2. Nehalenia will guarantee the Sirthi independence against both aggressors from the old and the new world.

Signed:

[X] King George Therus III

The Sirithi people were unresponsive to the diplomats of King George. As friends to the Amazonians, they understood that the Nehalanians came bringing poor tidings. They turned King George's diplomats aware, and after the meeting the diplomats reported simply being grateful to being allowed to leave Sirithi lands alive.

For many years Nehalenia and Osteria have been good neighbors. However we see the world rapidly evolving and not for the better. This presents both our nations with many new challenges. King George Therus believes that such challenges should not be faced allone. Therefor he proposes a treaty of friendship, trade and look into the possibility of a military alliance

1. Both nations declare their friendship
2. Both nations open up their borders and ports for unrestricted trade
3. (Possibility) A military alliance between the Kingdom of Osteria and the Kingdom of Nehalenia.

Signed:

[X] King George Therus III of Nehalenia
[X] King Karl von Kassitz

King George Therus sees the old world change into a much more dangerous place. War looms as the Sanguine are on an expansionist tour. At sea the Zellon Empire and Skeptoni's become more aggressive by the day. The Nehalenians have always regarded the Maljuk Caliphate as an important trading partner and friend. As token as our friendship we would like to offer these 25 beautiful Amazonian women from the new world as a token of our friendship.

The Nehalenian government also seeks an alliance with the great Caliph. We strongly believe that mutual cooperation is beneficial for both our nations. Allying with a great power will increase your security against Sanguine aggression while our combined naval force will ensure that trade routes will always be open.

1. A military alliance between the Maljuk Caliphate and the Kingdom of Nehalenia

Signed:

[X] King George Therus III
[] The Caliph of the Maljuks

The Caliphates, having had very few political talks with the Nehalanians in the past, saw little reason to ally with a Western power.

North Amazonian Sea

Without any formal declaration of war, the Nehalanian seizure of a Braiyusal trading vessel simply increased tensions. With armed escorts, Braiyusalian vessels sailed past Nehalanian vessels, bringing supplies to the Amazonian coasts while Nehalanians look on in a blatant stupor. Their enemies were being supplied by civilized power and King George was doing little about in. Nehalanian vessels sat in frustration as they watched Braiyusalians unload weapons on the shore then sail away unhindered.

The New World, circa 1836

While both parties were under immense political pressure, the Braiyusalians seemed to have squeezed the upper hand out of the situation as rumors of a Braiyusalian outpost and minor harbor was settled along the North Amazonian coast. This new outpost, though only inhabited by about 800 men with a 100 soldier garrison, was a viable stopping point for Braiyusalian trading vessels, whereas the Nehalanians had to go from Nehalania, to New Nehalania then a two week trip around the coat to the Amazonian shoreline.

The Confederacy of Sawl

"My lord," a servant announced as he walked into the old republic building, now turned into a palace for the dictator. "Speak," the dictator said as he looked up from his desk, piercing into the servant. After a few moments the servant spoke "We have received word that our fleet is now fully ready to set sail and defend any trade that we would possibly engage in." "And what of our land armies? Surely we have enough forces to repel any invaders?," Williams asked. "4,000 men are being recruited as we speak." A smile came to the dictator's face "Wonderful, marvelous! Send out our ships to find any nation that would seem to be a profitable trade with"

Not long after that order, five Third Rate ships went out and explored the surrounding sees for any new or old nations. Of course a two went to make the trek back to the old world, no doubt things had changed. They had found ships that held the Nehalian flag, they were surprised to find that the Nehalians had expanded so far. Some of their original merchants came from Nehalia when the country first began.

A letter was sent to the Nehalians in the Serranthia holding after reports had gone to the dictator himself.

The letter had been given the seal of the Sawlian Confederacy so that their new neighbors would know who it would be from. They clearly meant no hostilities and soon after, the dictator had more printed for him to sign. This was in case more important nations had begun to get noticed by any of the ships in the Sawlian Navy. The ship quickly set sail back to the homeland so that the ship could get back to its original post, defending the bay that led to Sawl territory.

Response to Nehalenian request

Dear King George Therus III,
Since you have no will or desire to write to me personally, but rather leave diplomatic matters to those below you I took it upon myself to show how proper civilized nations address fellow kings. You have expressed displeasement with Amazonian trade, an understandable feeling, one that we may have taken pity on earlier. However now situations have changed.
As I’m sure you are well aware one of our merchant vessels carrying those weapons that you were so displeased by went missing a few months ago. Considering how shortly after I received this dreadful message from your people, the only men brave enough to address me, I can only come to the conclusion that it was you that captured this ship. An act, might I remind you, that gives me full rights to go to war with you.
Ironically, it is the very same act that you are attempting to invade Amazonia over at this very moment. I’m sure many would agree that this is a tort of a barbaric peoples not a civilized sovereign in the old world. However the people of Nehelania have proven me wrong, or are you to nothing more than a barbaric peoples?
Do not despair however, as civilized people we are forgiving, kind, and benevolent to the lessers. So with it I bring you this, not a request but a demand for reparations for these pitiful actions. First, you shall return both the merchant ship you wrongfully captured as if a prisoner of war and the crew members held in captivity. Second, you shall pay costs to repair any damages of the ship. Third, Braiyusalian ships must have free passage to trade with any nation they feel the right to trade within the old world and new. Fourth, and lastly, I demand a man of importance and rank to be held until it is felt that all requirements are met. Living arrangements will be made to his liking of course, but he must remain under Braiyusalian watch.

With regret,
~King Rolfe of House Rolant

Message to the people of Zellon

King Conrad,
After much considerations of our recent talks in your homeland I would like to reconsider the defensive alliance you previously proposed. The Nehelanian people have brought much grief to our lands, and I feel that this is the best solution to end those griefs.
Sincerely,
King Rolfe of House Rolant

The Glorious Boletarian Commonwealth

Summer of 1836

As calendars marked the dawn of summer, signs of the blizzard and snow that had marked the previous winter slowly melted away. The blizzard had ceased it's assault months ago yet it's white still remained, roads once more became traversable as people emerged from their houses. Loved ones became once more united. Soon, the snow would melt entirely and people and serfs alike would be yet again working in the fields and factories. Pillars of smoke would once more mar the air as life became normal. With the changing of seasons however, came tidings of war. Some would not find their husbands, sons and fathers who had in the previous month been conscripted in response to rising tensions in the south. Outside of sovereign soil.

----------------------------------------------------------------

King Alorik II.
Wrenclaw, Capital of Boletaria. The Imperial Palace.

"Ah. So the Nehalenians wish to discuss diplomacy, over a cup of tea no less... Such talks might turn out lucrative. Reply post-haste that I accept. However, they will take place on Boletarian soil or not at all." Alorik Veliko spoke across the table at which himself, and his cabinet of advisers sat.
"My lord. The Nehalenians have a great deal of enemies. Why, rumors are that they face troubles in the New World. Accepting might tar your own reputation." Javor Malik, advisory in diplomatic affairs spoke aloud.
"Let them think what they may. Are we not the most powerful nation in the known world? Besides, I have always favored the underdog. Enough, I have made my decision, now let us speak of more pressing matters..."

----------------------------------------------------------------

Captain Kentorovitch.
Zellonian Sea.

The Captain stood at the helm of his new ship, the smooth, hard wood of the ships wheel in his hands. This fine vessel was now his to command, he thought as as he looked across the deck and Boletarian sailors prepping the rigging. Recently purchased from the Zellonian Royal Navy, this 2nd Rate along with another of it's kind and three 3rd Rates were now the latest vessels to join the Boletarian Navy. The island of Zellon slowly faded into nothingness as the fleet departed. Cutting through the restless waves with ease, one thing was certain. The Zellonians knew how to build a ship.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Envoy to King George III from the Boletarian Commonwealth

Attn: King George Therus III
Summer of 1836

Your excellency,

The King is honored by your proposal and would like nothing more than to accept. Such talks will doubtlessly be beneficial to all parties. However, as the season has passed political tensions have increased, King Alorik II honorably asks that talks take place on Boletarian soil within Wrenclaw. His safety, i'm sure you understand stands above all else. If not for himself, but for the nation.

The Kingdom of Anvegad
Summer 1836
Ministry of War, Supreme Commander's Office.

"An ambitious young fellow." Commented the Supreme Commander as he flipped through the extensive paper on military maneuvers published by Lieutenant Pavel Tarkov. "Very much in the spirit of General Strakov. Strategically offensive, tactically defensive."

"Ambitious indeed sir. Ambitious and dangerous."

"The two concepts fall hand-in-hand, lieutenant. And as dangerous as these ideas may be...." The Supreme Commander closed the folder and turned to the two lieutenants in the room with him, who while dressed per uniform grey and blue, were not simply young officers. "War is already rising in the Old World and New. And one day we will eventually be at war with a Great Power. We may very well have need of men such as Tarkov, if he can rise to his so-called genius reputation."

"I take it you intend to test him sir?"

"We're raising a few new battalions to fill out the ranks and free up experienced troops from garrison positions. Tarkov will be promoted to captain, as per his right upon finishing advanced officer training, and take command of a new cavalry battalion. You two will go along with him to fill out his staff. We'll see how his tactics pan out against his fellow officers in the upcoming war games. And if war comes...."

"No kind of testing ground like the battleground, sir."

"Indeed. Observe, assess, and keep tabs on who this rising star stays in touch with. Dismissed." Ordered the Supreme Commander, with the pair of lieutenants from Intelligence and Reconnaissance saluting and departing. Leaving the Supreme Commander to his thoughts of the future.

Tarkov was a danger, for certain. But war and conflict were beginning to sweep the world once again, and Anvegad's time would come once again sooner than most would think. And men like Tarkov could very well be the architects of things to come. Still, on the subject of dangerous yet capable officers, the Supreme Commander pulled out a different file from another cavalry captain. Detailing the need to integrate new weapons and pursue technological advantage over enemies. Radical ideas, yet grounded in a surprising level of reality for lofty ideas of multi-shot firearms.

Radical ideas against radical weapons. Would that be the face of things to come? The traditionalist in him scorned the idea, it was hard enough to acquire regular funding for continued expansion of the artillery they had, but the pragmatist reminded him that others may not be so inhibited. Only time would tell.

The Mikassian Tribes

"We stayed a while Chatan, we observed." The scout spoke quietly in the dark shadows of the war chiefs personal chamber. He spoke of the burning trees settlement and its people, the natives and such. It seemed they could be crushed, but the report of another flag, red and black, led Chatan to believe they had allies in places beyond his scouts reach.

"Relay the message to our forces across the sea, they are to speak with the locals, turn them to our cause." Chatan would injure the beast before he fought it head on. He looked across the map of the Tangled isle.

"There, have a war camp made their in the mountains." he pointed to the most southern tip of the tangled isle mountains and ushered the scout from his presence.

Fuldruo, Red mountains.

Surveying parties drive forward across the crimsons slopes, marking deposits and potential mining areas with long and tall blood poles and smoking fires. Behind them come the stone workers and weapon smiths, chipping away at rock and tasting the air for iron.

The Mikasi shall move forward to glory, striking with a colder and sharper blade.

"Strike!" Yelled the instructor over the mountain pass, the thousands below him striking and dodging, parrying and lunging forward with their axes, spears and shields. The famed berserker 'blood teeth' stood among them, walking slowly between the ranks and spotting those with potential. His hair stood in great long spikes, held together with thick grease and dark blood.

It was nearing the afternoon, and none would sleep until all had been assessed.

Training is under way of the least veteran ranks.
Minerals found in the red mountains.
Large force moves to the southern tip of the mountain range across the sea, 1 point spent on improving relations with the natives of the land.

UPDATE: Late Summer, 1836

CHANGING OF THE GUARD (August, 1836)

Though it came only with careful consideration, it was the Dalatrian economist Halthorne who amended his great work, published only the month before, by removing his own nation among the list of Great Powers. Though the United Kingdoms of Dalatrum had long served as an Eastern-Western gateway from the Old World to the Caliphates, it's economy had stumbled. Dealing more with internal problems than the resolve of external problems, Dalatrian prestige had slipped considerably. Halthorne announced that it was the recently enlarged Oslad Federation that edged in as the world's next Great Power, emboldened by it's strengthened position of having annexed it's Ville client state.

Thirteen days later Halthorne was found, stabbed sixteen times in the back, only blocks from his home. Not even the beautiful capital of Dalatrum was a safe place any longer. Power had now shifted from the East, back to the West.

THE SANGUINE WAR OF AGGRESSION (August, 1836)

"Sir?"

"Come."

The sergeant entered and extended his hand, the furled paper held out. General Iletsky took the document and unfurled it, reading it with a long, meticulous glance. He furled it back up and handed it back to the sergeant. His glance was all the man needed to know. He turned and left, leaving the General with his accompanying staff.

"Word, General?" A man called, a lieutenant by the bars across his shoulder.

"I fear the Third Army has been lost, and with it, it's general." The lieutenant didn't reply. "And the Kapitans have traded territory for time, it seems."

"Their lands are vast, though empty. They are rallying their troops for a final stand," the lieutenant added.

"But without Varmuth's general acting as a rearguard, the Kapitans may yet be at our flanks," Iletsky realized aloud, stroking at his thick mustache. He pulled himself from the chair and stepped around his desk. The tent was muggy, even in the low sun. Outside wasn't much better, but at least he could breathe. The guard yanked the flap open and Iletsky stepped out. The vast desert stretched for miles, but a camp of Sanguine had popped up quite literally overnight. 70,000 with accompanying cannons, the army had built a small town to accommodate them for the night.

In the distance, a plume of smoke trailed lazily in the sky.

FULRIC-SCHULSTEIN BORDER SKIRMISH (August, 1836)

With tensions high from the dispute between the Grand Kingdom of Schulstein and the Duchy of Fulric, reputed shootouts in the border town of Scizanno have become regular. Each side condemned the other side, with Fulric announcing that Scizanno was within Fulric territory, and Schulstein retorting that the majority of those that lived in the town of Scizanno were Schulsteinians, born in the Grand Kingdom.

Tensions rose so high that the Fulrics mobilized 6,000 regulars to garrison the town. Within days the Schulstein shooters had mostly dissipated, but tensions nevertheless remained high.

[Tensions between the Duchy of Fulric and the Grand Kingdom of Schulstein are tumultuously high.]

Imperium of Skeptoni
February 1836

Keiser Herald Skaneg.
Odinion, Capital of Skeptoni.

Skeptonian-Tangarian Relations

Skeptonian-Tangarian relations seemed to be at an all time high. After several successful diplomatic missions the Skeptonians have sent the Tangarian Emperor an alliance treaty. Not only that but talks of a royal marriage between the Emperor and the Keisers youngest daughter have been very popular among the nobility.

Serranthian Slave Trade
Slavery certainly wasn't a new thing to the old world but the recent expeditions to Serranthia have brought on a new interest in purchasing prisoners from Serranthian natives. Despite slavery long been abolished in mainland Skeptoni some have asked of the Skeptonian government to legalize the use of slaves in their Outpost/Colonies. The Keiser is expected to soon give judgement on the matter.

The Empire of Zellon

August 1836

As the King sat at his looking over all the reports that he had missed while he was sick. He had heard about the recent war and even of his own colonists burning their own ships. Zach knew he must give them something. So he sent a letter to the Viceroy and his son Zach who was also in the colonies. Yet he'd heard nothing of his expeditionary force or of his son James who was in Kuneia. But he must give new orders to his colonial holdings. He also heard news of things to the south and knew he'd have to find a way to get into the areas as well.

He decided not to comment on the war that was waged by the massive army of the north-east. He then began going through any alliance and trade requests.

With those matters attended to the King went and saw his new line of factories that were made while he's been sick and they were pumping out goods which would be excellent to sell to the mainland as factory made products are cheaper and with most of mainland having few factories if any at all would make our economy boom. Now as one of his assistants brought in a letter that was disturbing the Nehalenia. "I thought they were better then this. They are one of the most modernized countries and one of the best naval powers ever. However I can not stand for this" He sent the man out and began writing a letter to the world.

If he had sea he'd need to cover land as well. So he begun writing to his allies on the mainland

The king stood up gave the letters to messengers which would deliver them personally to each of the countries that are our allies and that trade with Nehalenia. He then called in his admirals gave them their orders and sent them off.

United Kingdoms of Dalatrum

The country was doing fine in the months of January and February until the Royal Family of Kesa was attacked outside of their palace in Kesa. With the fever of a change in the government growing, the sudden attack on the family caused the fever to spread even more. The Royal Guard were able to gun down the attackers, but not without death as the Prince and the King of Dalatrum both were gunned down and died on the spot. The Queen, now a widow, took the job of the King and the daughters' positions were moved around to control the panic.

A photo of The Ladies of Kesa (Left to Right: Victoria Ferreira (17), Alicia Ferreira (9), Charlotte Ferreira (33), Louise Ferreira (26))

But, most of the country wanted change and the only change was too limited the powers of the Royal Family. Known as the Ladies of Kesa during the time. The Queen wasn't like her husband, who managed to keep the country in the Great Power status for so long. She was working too hard to keep up with the changes of the year, but couldn't with pressure from the conservative side. The Conservative Party grew stronger as they were gaining more control of the Ladies of Kesa. And in the middle of June, the Queen suddenly closed the ports and put guards to prevent anyone from trading with other countries.

The United Kingdoms of Dalatrum went from a Great Power to an Isolationist country in the matter of months. But, the people didn't approve of the decision as dock workers revolt against the guards hours after the decision. Meanwhile, the Ladies of Kesa were falling apart as the decision had divided the family up for good. Two of the youngest left Kesa and sailed for the colony in Serranthia to leave the life of wealth and nobility behind. The oldest, however, went straight towards the workers and demanded that they helped her retake the throne for her mother. Her name was Louise Ferreira, the oldest daughter of the family. She never agreed with her father and mother's decisions and after her father's death, the relationship with her mother ended.

After the closing of the ports, she stormed out of the palace and planned to leave Kesa and Dalatrum to fall. But, she realized that she could finally overthrow her mother and restore the country into a trading hub. After weeks of gaining support, Louise and her supporters marched towards the palace. They attacked the Royal Guards first to push towards the palace and to protect Louise. They were pushed back into the island of the city until the army arrived. But, in support of the rebels as the General was against the Ladies of Kesa and wanted them disbanded. Even know Lousie was apart of the ground, she didn't 'force her ideas towards others' as the general said to her face.

The military also was changing as the tactics of war of Strategic Command during the time from February to June. They soon proved that the tactic was useful as they attack the Royal Guard during a stormy night. While the army was supporting Louise, she and a couple of supports got into the palace and found the Queen in the throne room. Mother and daughter were standing face to face as Louise told that her mother's power ends when the sun rises. The Queen refused to give up her crown to her daughter and made a long speech about making the country better by being isolated. However, the Princess shot at her mother and hit her shoulder as blood fill the throne. With a pistol aimed for her head, the Queen threw the crown in shame and started to cry. The Queen had fallen.

After taking the throne, Louise was crowned Queen, changed the government into a Constitutional Monarchy, and brought trade back to the city. Queen Louise covered up the whole mess up and said that the ports were closed for repairs and as of the sound of gunfire, the crime rate when up suddenly and when down after the military came to the city. Many countries believed in the Queen's reasons, but rumors spread that the country faced a sudden revolution. The country and its' people were good lairs after all.

---

Queen Louise Ferreira's Message

"My country people, this world as been to a lot in the pass few months. From the Old World to Serranthia, there has been many wonderful things for the world. Now, our country is ready to embrace the change of good. Our factories will be more active, our colonies will be the best, our forces will be the strongest. But, we need to keep the peace of the world. My father said that "peace is the highest priority over war" and he is right. Even known he will be missed by us all, he would of kept the peace during these dark times.

I hope that we can do the same. I am announcing that there be a conference between our friend, Republic of Zukovia. It will be at Kesa and the conference will be renewing our alliance. I hope that Zukovia will be able to make and renew our alliance.

Thank you all for allowing me to speak. Bless you all.
