Cayne remained silent while Yamesh continued about interacting with the partially powered terminal. During the wait, he spent most of the time peering through the narrow gap between the slide doors, using a utility lamp on his helmet to light up the hallway on the other end. For the most part, the passage was enveloped in darkness with only brief segments of the overhead lights and emergency floor laps ever sparking, further hinting at a likely anomalous power-grid disruption matched with a faulty erratic ship-wide system.
Eventually his Santerian squadmate was successful in providing the door enough power to fully unlock with each thick metallic slide folding into the walls, dust falling away as a result. The deck lights unfortunately did not prove as reliable as they were quick to burn out once Yamesh attempted to re-activate them. "Figures." Cayne sighed before flipping the scope of his sniper rifle back into position with a securing click before stepping into the hallway. "Taking point."
Stepping into the hallway, Cayne and Pathfinder lit up the darkness as they pushed forwarding, keeping their night vision cams networked with the entire team so they too could see what was ahead of them. Their approach was slow and cautious, staying as quite as they could manage while passing by several locked doors and compartments with small terminals unlit next to them. Upon reaching a curve in the corridor, the design and architecture shifted to an enclosed catwalk, transparent materials on both sides of the passage revealed some sort of cargo bay or lab below them. Cayne identified several lined of crates and containers but also an array of dormant or glitching machinery. Though only going by what they were able to see and confirm, Cayne began to ponder upon the vessel's original purpose of designation.
"Looks like some sort of processing facility down there." He commended over the radio while continuing to scout forward, his rifle steadily pointing down the catwalk pathway, "Hmm...No weapons from what I could make out down there. Don't recall seeing any ordinance in the hanger either; think we're on some sort of freighter or exploration vessel?"
For a moment, Cayne's motion sensors claimed to have picked up movement around him with a single small ping to his right. But after shifting his gaze towards the direction of the anomaly, he found nothing there and no sounds to tie to a single entity; the ping too had gone completely dark. He looked to Pathfinder by his side but the drone simply gave him a quizzical posture, showing that it did not detect anything. "Anyone picking up unusual interference? I think my sensors are acting up..."
The overlooking walkway was not did not last long as they reentered into another deck, this time filled with rooms whose doors now were accessible. Peeking into them one at a time, Cayne could discern several rows of large compartments - possibly lockers, some of them actually open with a slew of unrecognizable tools and miscellaneous items across the floor. Some of the other chambers appeared smaller with only a few larger terminals residing in them.
"May want to take a quick look through here for anything useful; if anything, this looks to be a storage or equipment deck.” Cayne said aloud once more, pointing out anything his other squadmates may find fascinating.
Soon after walking through the vaguely dim-lighted deck, Cayne had stumbled upon yet another sealed door at the end of the hallway impeding their progress. Unfortunately there were no active terminals this time to order the doors slides to unlock, especially when this particular set seemed to be receiving power from somewhere. Frowning, he approached the door to examine it further but could clearly indicate it was fully shut.
“Got another door here…Looks like this one is locked down. May have to pry this sucker open or use some-“
Cayne was about to suggest using explosives to alternatively blow the seal clean off but it appeared that was not going to be the case. Just has he became within a few feet, the door’s sensor detected his presence and automatically unlocked, swinging open in one swift motion. Unexpectedly, a ray of light on the other side of the opened doors lit up his visual sensors, blinding him and causing him to curse as a result. Putting a free hand in front of his face to block out the light, he frantically toggled his sensors to shift modes and un-filter the radiance before him.
Groaning from the brief ordeal, he lowered he hand so he could get visual feed on what was directly in front of him. Cautiously stepping into a well-lit facility, he could see a wide open space with a single large pillar, decorated in holographic monitors and terminals located in the center of the room. The floor beneath his feet was detailed in markings and color coded lines with strange unrecognizable characters to highlight their purpose; or at least what Cayne could make sense of at least.
With Pathfinder already floating about and mapping out the fully active section, Cayne looked around, noting the architecture of a second floor overlooking him and several examples of stairways to reach them. There also appeared to be a bottom floor too as opposing flights mirrored their ascending counterparts respectfully. Around on his floor were several seemingly accessible rooms and stations with other functional terminals spread out or amassed at the center of the pillar. Interestingly enough, the lighting, while periodically flickering, notably gave off a greenish hue and upon checking his environmental readouts, he could see that life support seemed to be active. Not by much and certainly not sustainable, but active nonetheless.
“We got power running through this section…Whatever it is; looks important though.” Cayne radioed as he turned to his arriving team.
