Feel free to climb on. Just don't cause any trouble. Raven gave you a choice of if you found his reasoning pure enough for his morals, so either let your character find it acceptable, or climb on with the golems and try to get acquainted. Being difficult to the commander of a ship who has shit to do kinda doesn't get you high on the list.

Hop on, and get ready to go to some dangerous places, and try to get acquainted!

@UnusualStranger Oh, I see. I expected them to have a greater degree of autonomy than that. Anyways, how much of a distance can they get from Jonathan, measured in a percentage of the ships size? And do objects between them interfere with their connection? (I know I make them sound like WiFi hotspots, but still XD)

@Coga19000 Wifi hotspots is probably best way to go about it with them! They have a bit of autonomy, but the point of the Mechy was not that he has robot armies doing battle, it is more like having a second set of hands to help and fight, not go out to town and do whatever. Reason for having such advanced things in a generally back age is because the magic powers them, not cause they just work on their own!

As far as their distance, I couldn't really put a number on them percentage of the ship size (That would mean having to measure out the ship, more work than its worth!) So, about 15-20 feet of distance. Walls and other ordinary objects are not a factor, but stuff more elemental based will definitely cut your 'connection'.

A pair of questions with the post...one is that a drunken man had died in the starting stages, not a woman...so not sure where you are getting the extra casualty from.

Second, the last line you have confuses me and maybe I'm reading it wrong. "He shackled two of them out of his clothes." I don't get it. Is he binding someone? Because magically binding someone just like that is strange seeing as how I don't remember having anyone wearing metal armor into this. Is he pulling out some metal shackles on himself?

I just want to make sure so when I do my big response it makes sense.

Oh my god, I'm so sorry... I got completely confused over there. And shackling was an artifact of an earlier version of the post, where he was simply going to reveal his devices. I eventually decided against it, and had him outright equip tell of them.
Oh God, I have seriously screwed up on this RP. I'll fix this right away.

Oh, and I just read the other posts in greater detail, and its nice to see @hoppiholla391's character has a similar point of view to mine. This could almost get a theme going about different types of Mages. I could definitely fit in a "as you shape your element, your element shapes you" speech in some point in the future.

@UnusualStranger Just a coupla questions; first of all, are those shadows tangible by others; like,can we actually physically hit them? And also, are those knives of real steel, or merely shadows of them? And if the latter, do they cause the same amount of injury as the real things?

Well, the shadows are not of real steel at all. The entire thing is just a shadow, so shadow steel if you will. They can be physically struck, so they are not totally reckless. Trouble is all that will happen is that after trashing the shadow it just returns to the owner.

And yes, those shadow knives will still cut and hurt like a real knife. So ignoring the shadow will get you stabbed. Its a unique powerset, while it isn't superbly powerful in a direct way, its a threat in that it is something that can bring you down without the owner having to worry.

Also....not sure how you think that device you are throwing is going to work. If a flashbang is all it took for the shadow to disappear an Illuminate could light up a room and pretty much kill every single Nightshade in a room.

@UnusualStranger I.. see. If it dazes the shadow, or makes the Nightshade lose control over it? Or maybe it makes it dissapear temporarily?

I mean, I am trying to get this working from a science standpoint, which might be a bit silly on a fantasy environment like this. But I can only guess that the flash, if it doesn't outright kill the shadow, it should at least disorient its darkness-calibrated senses. And the grenade itself is still filled with explosives, so there physical pain and heat from one going off near the guy should disorient him in a large enough degree to lose control. BTW, how powerful are these guys supposed to be in terms of rank? I can only guess they are high on rank, but I'm not sure how exactly.

Terrible idea to bring science to a magic fight. So, the grenade isn't going to hurt anyone but the crowd you tossed it into. I'm not sure what you planned on accomplishing throwing explosives in a crowded bar, but I can assure you it isn't going to be a simple 'hit guy and done'. That shadow is now going to be trying to stab you, and unless you dropped that grenade at your feet its not going to stop it.

The Nightshade is around adept level, which is why the shadow is able to beat on you without the controller having to stare at it the whole time to make it move and strike. While they do have varying degrees of how far along they are (Mage-Adept is generally where they are.)

I have several questions about the use of the flashbang grenade.

- First off, the required materials and complexity of such a device. Looking at flashbangs on Wikipedia, they require a specific manner of construction to contain the explosive side of the grenade while still allowing the light and sound to escape. Plus they require specific compounds; "a pyrotechnic metal-oxidant mix of magnesium or aluminium, and an oxidizer such as ammonium perchlorate or potassium nitrate."

I don't imagine such materials come cheap in this setting, if they can even be found outside of a major city that can devote manpower and resources to mining and production.

- Second, the idea that Johnathan just happened to have the flashbang on hand. There's no mention of him having built it in a previous post, and in all honesty that doesn't work for me. If you don't mention you have specific items on hand that aren't your usual weapons and equipment, then I'm disinclined to believe someone can just whip out the right tool for the job at the right time. No character should be able to react perfectly to every situation.

- Third, the use of grenades as a whole. Mechanists build gadgets and robots; no mention of explosives in their descriptions. If you want something to go up in flames, you call a Pyromancer. If you want an explosion with special effects, I think an Alchemist is probably the better bet, and even that should be at a minimum of Weaver rank due to keeping unstable mixtures on hand until they're needed - which could be in the first mission or not for the better part of a week.

- As an aside, I note that Johnathan took a hit to the face from a shadow whose owner was between Mage and Adept in rank and didn't even flinch. You are not invincible.
