Full disclosure -- we here at RPGC are completely and totally embroiled in National Novel Writing Month. We want you to be, too! That said, the NaNo challenge is a bit of a marathon, and some of our usual priorities, like prompt critiques, effortless coolness, and world-shaking bonus categories are taking a bit of a backseat. We'd ask for your patience -- but we'd rather you join us on the NaNo challenge instead! The traditional RPGC format is taking a major backseat this month. We'll be back to normal in December. Without further ado....

RPGC#6: Nano!

"Small minds are concerned with the extraordinary, great minds with the ordinary."-Blaise Pascal

The ordinary world is full of extraordinary things that may be overlooked for their size. So show them to us. Let us see the world through the eyes of an ant; let us watch the miracle of nuclear fusion. Make us see and appreciate the wonders of our world in a whole new light.

Universal Creation: "Nothing exists except atoms and empty space. Everything else is opinion." -Democritus
Show us what the tiniest components of the universe are. Atoms, empty space, magic, science, oblivion. We don't know. So show us.

The Whole Is Greater: "No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main." -John Donne
Show us what happens when the small things come together to form something greater than each on its own.

Infinitesimal Power: β€œGreat things are done by a series of small things brought together.” -Vincent Van Gogh
Show us the raw power contained in the ordinary things. Make us consider what actions and reactions really mean.

The RPG NaNo Challenge

Start writing. -some guy

Have you ever thought about writing a novel? Your biggest obstacle is your inner editor -- the little voice inside that tells you to stop, that chapter wasn't good enough, go back and fix it. Well, punch that guy in the crotch this month, and find out what you can do. You might surprise yourself! The goal is 50,000 words -- that works out to 1,667 words every day. You can do that much in Spam without even thinking about it -- so why not turn it into your first draft?

Gotta Start Somewhere: β€œEvery search begins with beginner's luck. And every search ends with the victor's being severely tested." -Paolo Coelho
You took on the NaNoWriMo challenge, and hung in there for dear life. If you made it to 15,000 words, you just earned yourself a bronze medal. Congratulations -- now keep going!

Whoa, We're Halfway There: "Whoa-oh! Livin' on a prayer!" -Bon Jovi
Take my hand -- you'll make it, I swear. 25,000 words is quite an accomplishment. Is November over yet? No? THEN KEEP GOING!

Alexander Wept: "The most dangerous period is the aftermath. It is then, with all his resources spent and his guard down, that an individual must watch out for dulled reactions and faulty judgment.” -Richard Nixon
You did it. You finished the NaNoWriMo challenge, and churned out 50,000 words of novel draft. Get some sleep, and put this gold medal under your pillow. You can let the editor out of its cage now.

As usual, send all your conventional entries to @RPGC Entry. The deadline for such entries is November 22nd at 11:59:59 PM, or 'universal midnight.'

If you are participating in NaNoWriMo, then your deadline is November 30th at local midnight, and you don't need to worry about the contest theme or bonuses at all. You will need to send us a link to your NaNo profile -- we'll use their wordcount verifier magic thingy device to determine your level of award. NaNoWriMo entries do not need to submit anything -- we don't expect polish, so don't worry about how well it reads! That said, if you'd like to share part of your story, or perhaps a 'pitch' that tells us what it's about, you can send that in to @RPGC Entry along with the regular entries, to be posted alongside them in the voting thread. Because of the raw volume of writing involved in this challenge, we ask that you limit any samples to 5,000 words or less. I know -- I know. Remember, there are potentially a lot of people writing a whole lot more than that. We can't all read them all.

After the month is out and the challenge is over, you may be interested in swapping novels with another guildie and getting some feedback. We'll worry about all that later -- for now, there's a whole lot of writing to be done. Feel free to use this thread for all your NaNoWriMo needs -- tips, tricks, woes, happiness, we do it all.

Are you on the fence about what to try this month? TRY NANOWRIMO. Seriously. Just do it.

Ah, that was unclear.

NaNo goes until the 30th. It's only if you want to post a sample of your novel (which is not mandatory) that you need to worry about the 20th deadline. That's purely for logistical purposes -- we're going to post the entries on the 21st, and we can't post your sample if we don't have it.

I think my thesis adviser would have my head rolling if I try to write a novella in a month instead of working on my thesis.

I have you know, throughout the process of signing up for NaNo, I was screaming in my head.

"WHY CANT I JUST HAVE A BREAK? CANT I JUST DO MY HOMEWORK?"

The answer is no, by the way. Because I'm obligated to give you something happy after Damocles. I have you know, I sacrificed a story about how the one guy named Hudson who died and wasn't remembered by you people had actually let his plane get hit out of suicidal grief over the death of his best friend.

Instead you get a story about cute people like sailors doing cute things like botched first aid.

Day Six, and I'm a little over the word count for today, my outline is working out very well, and I really like the story. I can see places it can get better after another draft or two and I've had a few moments of "Well, I'm going to have to take care of that in the rewrite."

I'm entirely excited to see things going so well, and I'm looking forward to my couple or three hours of writing each night.

@Naril

And people act like I write quickly. I've been writing for at least six hours a day (since the 4th, but still), and I'm barely halfway to today's goal. And by today, I mean yesterday, because it's 12:33 AM for me now.

If everything goes fine, I should get up to around 10k words today. Still 1.6k under the goal, but it's something. The key to this is to refuse to go to sleep before you write your 2k words. Download InternetOff if you need to get rid of your distractions, I find it helps quite a bit.

You're lucky, my story is devoid of action scenes. Just a bunch of contemplating the nature of communication and biology, and then saving the world.

When in doubt, send a few guys through the door with a loaded shotgun. Easy words, and you can always edit them out later.
