“World conquest… has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?”

We thought this was YGGDRASIL. We thought we were doing the right thing. Were… were we wrong?




|| The Story ||




So. There you were. The last of your kind. Facing down the end of an age. Defeated yes, but not alone. Never alone.

As you and what few guildmates you could manage to network together for one last big blowout on the Evening of Crash (what many players lacking in style and imagination had taken to calling the cancellation of YGGDRASIL, an event so dreaded its reputation near the end had become almost apocalyptic) eat and drink happily, the nonexistent ale leaves a bittersweet aftertaste as you and your friends swapped stories and discussed the adventures that used to be. Is this really the end? Is this what all your hard work, friendships and connections amounts to in the end? A quiet refund and a “game over” screen? Unacceptable. You were the kings of YGGDRASIL once. Okay, well, maybe not kings. Grand viziers or princes at least though. Still, this was your world! Who are they to take it away from you? And who are those among you who would dare go quietly, slinking out the doors of the guild hall as if accepting the inevitable, refusing to stay with YGGDRASIL and your friends to the very end?

You keep your mouth shut, not wanting to ruin the mood of the party for everyone else on the last night of service. This was everybody’s goodbye. They deserve to enjoy it. Who are you to complain?

But as the night winds down and everyone who hasn’t left or logged out inevitably gets drunk and groggy on real drinks instead of fake ones (or pretends to if they’re underage), you decide in a drunken stupor to speak your mind. You ask them all a very simple question. To your dear friends, the ones who’d stay with you to the end, and even to the NPCs for their years of faithful service.

“What if YGGDRASIL didn’t have to end?”

Of course you don’t expect anyone to take it seriously. It’s just your way of expressing the anger and frustration you feel at the culmination of what feels like a life’s work. And the sadness of seeing something that brought you so much joy come to an end. But to your surprise, everybody else agrees with you. Maybe the drinks or the mood have opened up their hearts in a way online interaction so rarely does, but they all express the same earnest wish to you from the bottom of their hearts.

“We don’t want YGGDRASIL to end either.”

They all smile at you, waiting. You can’t say anything. To say anything would be to ruin this precious moment. The last memory you’ll have of YGGDRASIL and the guild. But you have to say something. Before you make this weird for everyone.

Your voice shakes as you shed tears none of them will ever see the entire time your lips are inexplicably curling into the saddest smile you’ve ever seen. The clock counts down to ten. With renewed strength and emotion, you raise your glass and give your thanks to the guild.

“Cheers!”

The clock strikes zero. Zero zero: zero zero. Then, a miracle happens. It counts back up to one.

Everyone looks around. Are the clocks running ahead? Did some disgruntled employee who will be receiving praise from the gamers and some strongly-worded reprimands from his boss tomorrow decide to extend the server life by a few hours? The room is deadly quiet. No one’s even lowered their glasses yet.

That’s when you hear it. A low, soft, almost silent rumbling, like an earthquake. The room remains perfectly silent and still because it’s so far underground, but you definitely hear the sound of the earth moving. Lowering your glass, you get up out of your gilded chair to go and investigate, thinking for sure this must have something to do with the server shutdown. You’re so busy contemplating what must be going on that you don’t even hear one of the NPCs calling your name as you leave the room.

As you urge the large blast-proof bunker-like doors that protect the guild hall to move aside, shouldering your way through the tiny crack into the beautiful night sky, you’re met with a blast of crisp, cold air that smells like pine and earth. And it’s not what you see that tips you off. It’s not the mountainside literally shedding rocks like dandruff as your guild hall displaces the mountain around it. It’s not the unfamiliar night sky. It’s that smell. The smell of fresh air, and the taste of dirt.

YGGDRASIL never supported smell and taste.

You meander outside in disbelief, taking a few deep breaths and even embarrassingly licking your armor and tasting a few of your items just to confirm what you’re feeling. This is real sensory feedback. Which means… oh shit. You’re not in YGGDRASIL anymore. But you’re amazed by just how much it looks like it.

Your guildmates and the NPCs come rushing to your side, displaying an unusual amount of personality and independence you never knew they were capable of (the NPCs that is, unless your guildmates were truly that boring to you). As you gaze out at the stunning scenery and the accidental destruction brought on by your dramatic arrival, you all have the same question on your minds.

“Have we been transported to the world of YGGDRASIL?”

After a few long hours of searching and investigation, the answer to that question is: you don’t know. What you do know is that you and your small group have been transported to an unknown location that looks an awful lot like YGGDRASIL, but with some alarming dissimilarities. And you have no idea how you got there or how to get back. The NPCs and monsters have all come alive in ways you never could have anticipated, and the world’s taken on a depth and verisimilitude that’s almost frightening to you. Taste. Smell. Touch. Hunger. Exhaustion. Pain.

What’s worse, it seems you’ve landed in what might be the most desolate, backwater human nation there is, a kingdom bordered by dwarves and so cut off from the rest of the world that they barely know what magic is. The land is familiar, fraught with peril of course (if only for the locals), but also just strange enough to be considered foreign to you, and unsettling in its disarming similarity. What’s the same? What’s different? Was anyone else brought here, and is this really the world of YGGDRASIL that it appears to be?

And as if only to add to your problems, there are rumors of a new power rising in the north near the heart of the continent. A small organization with the power of many concentrated in the hands of a few. Cloaked in shadow, this mysterious group of god-like entities is known only by the dreaded name of “Ainz Ooal Gown”...

Hey, don't complain. You got your wish. Now YGGDRASIL never has to end.



|| Overview ||




Welcome to this Overlord RP of mine! I’ve been thinking of making something like this for a while, but this is the first time I’ve put any of the ideas I’ve had to digital paper. Basically, you are a group of YGGDRASIL belonging to a as-of-yet unnamed guild (I’ll leave that part up to you) of middling to average importance who were transported to the New World along with your guild hall on the night YGGDRASIL shut down.

You find yourself in a strange new world that seems similar to YGGDRASIL, but you know nothing and no one there. Your first contact with other people comes in the form of a small nameless kingdom. Militarily weak, exploited by dwarves and besieged on all sides by monsters, they appear to be some of the last vestiges of human civilization in this region. And you have the power to save them.

But… will you? Maybe you’ll exploit them to suit your own needs like the dwarves. Or maybe you’ll just leave them to be devoured by monsters and the legions of the damned while you look out for you and yours in a world where nothing is familiar and nothing you know can be taken for granted.

This is an RP about you and your guildmates, and the effects you have on the New World as godlike player characters. Establishing a power base, protecting the locals, surviving the trials of living in a new world and even waging war on anyone who threatens your chances of survival. These are all things you can and maybe must do in this strange new world. And maybe, for those who seek it, you might even find a way back home.

Based off the character sheets given by the novels, with a few expansions of course:

  • Not your character’s real name please, their username. Try to be creative. This also includes nicknames and aliases which is why I’m giving it its own section.

Blue text if human, yellow for demihuman, red if heteromorphic. Keep in mind that heteromorphic races were heavily discriminated against in YGGDRASIL, and that the guild probably won’t have many.

Title:
  • A moniker usually signifying your race, job class, and achievements i.e. “Bloody Valkyrie”, “Dissolving Cage”, “Ruler of Glaciers” etc.

Job:
  • Your class, basically. There’s a list of known classes here but feel free to make up your own within reason. You may have more than one but less than five (four if you're demihuman or heteromorphic).

Residence:
  • For all player characters this should be the guild base. For NPCs be specific about which area.

Alignment:
  • D&D stuff. Chaotic Neutral, Lawful Good, etc.

Sense of Justice:
  • On a scale of -500 to 500, how just are you? Loaded questions ahooooooy!

Racial level:
  • Applicable only to demihumans and heteromorphic races. Basically how much have you specialized and trained your race’s inherent abilities over learning a skill or a trade?

Job level:
  • Your class level, and the opposite of the above. Your racial level and job level together equal your total level, which in this guild should be at least 80-100 if not exclusively 90+ for player characters.

Stretch your creative muscles! (or borrow from the canon if you have to :P)

Skills:
  • The realm of warriors, and their magic equivalent. Similar to the Martial Arts of the New World but not quite, Skills are basically spells or techniques that warriors can use a limited number of times per day. Again, not many of these have been mentioned in canon, so you're free to use your imaginations.

Equipment:
  • List all your worn and equipped items along with their class (Divine, World etc.). For simplicity's sake, this includes weapons. Feel free to be creative! Remember, not much has been established in canon.

Bio:
  • What was your character’s story before coming to the New World? What are they like as a person?

Other:
  • Other miscellaneous stuff and/or gags.

|| The Guild ||






A repurposed dwarven settlement once known as Ilya Nazarov and now known as the Ragnavault, the Syndicate’s guild hall used to be home to a small dwarven kingdom, and is still populated as such by many low level dwarves who assist in the upkeep and management of the Syndicate’s assets (almost like employees).

Main level


The Halls



The Halls of the fortress are carved directly into the stone wall of the volcano, stretching throughout it like veins. They can take you to pretty much any location within the guild hall besides the Ragnavault itself, and thousands of rooms line them. Most of the rooms are located in the outermost tunnels closest to the surface to protect the low-level dwarven workers who live there in case of an eruption, but in the case of the nigh-invulnerable guild members who are all high-level players, their rooms are located far apart from one another in the heart of the volcano. The space afforded to a guild member is understandably far greater than the workers, and comes with much better furniture and customization options including fake skies to ward off depression due to living life underground.

The Dripper



A vast smelting mechanism utilizing raw magma from the heart of the volcano. Built into the heart of the fortress, it reliably produces iron and many other precious metals and minerals for the guild’s use. Toasty modified it from the dwarves’ original design and renamed it the Dripper after Odin’s magic ring Draupnir, which was said to multiply into eight new rings every ninth night by dripping liquid gold.

The Copper Hall



The banquet hall of the Syndicate. Sort of like the Round Table to their court of Camelot, so to speak. Built inside one of the gigantic mechanisms of the Dripper, the room is heated naturally by a stream of molten copper, which keeps the room at a comfortable temperature. Due to this feature copper tends to occasionally build up in certain areas, creating flows of solid orange metal built almost like benches. This (along with the metal’s use in minting) was what earned the room the name “The Copper Hall”.

Aside from the ornate guildmaster’s chair at the head of the table, the table itself is magical to compensate for its plain appearance. Although it looks like a crudely cut slab of rock, it can grow large enough to accommodate any number of guests, and wine and mead flow freely from it.

The Brass Throne



The personal quarters of the guildmaster, the Brass Throne is sorta like Toasty’s throne room. Modeled to be distinctly Japanese in its appearance to provide a sense of homeliness and familiarity, it’s where he does business with Shammura at his side, and anyone with a complaint or a suggestion is allowed an audience. Higher-ranking guild members need not knock or announce their presence, but the vast chamber is still considered to be just as much a private space as it is a public one. Out of all the rooms in the fortress, it is the largest.

Lower level


The Underground Hotspring



More of a bath house, really, although the water that flows into it is indeed from an underground hotspring. Created more as a decorative piece than anything, it now serves as a luxury and a place of relaxation for the guild (the dwarven workers however have been barred from the premises due to their excess body hair always clogging the drains and leaving disgusting residue). Aside from just bathing it is a full spa and resort, and is available to all guild members and their custom NPCs to use.

The Bank



This is where withdrawals and deposits are made to and from the Ragnavault. It’s a lot like a normal bank. Except, y’know, it just doesn’t look like that. At all.

Upper level


The Librarium



Nostromo’s domain. This is where all of the Syndicate’s vast knowledge is contained. It’s quite expansive, occupying most of the level, and is easy to get lost in, no thanks to Nostromo’s sense of aesthetics and design.

The Astrolab



Loosely connected to the Librarium, the Astrolab is situated in the mouth of the volcano, with the only clear view of the night sky. It’s used to study the stars, or just to relax.

Extra level


The Ragnavault



The titular vault after which the fortress is named, the Ragnavault may have been the most ridiculously secure location in YGGDRASIL. Most members of the guild have never seen the inside of it and have only ever been able to withdraw predetermined amounts through a psuedo-automated teller machine, and for good reason.

With a security system unhindered by things like real-life logic and budget constraints (not to mention the laws of physics), the Ragnavault in our real world or the New World easily surpasses even Fort Knox in terms of its impenetrability, requiring both a special key item to access (as the Ragnavault itself is its own dungeon unconnected to the rest of the world map except by means of transdimensional teleportation) and a special invisible ID tag hard-coded into your player character to prevent immediate self-immolation by the environment inside the vault.

Once inside, you will find a massive 100-ton vault door guarded by a high-level dwarven sentry (level 85). He will ask you for the passphrase, parts of which are known only by the six founding members of the guild, who in the absence of the guild master must all be present to unlock the door. The door will not unlock if the sentry is dead, as he is the only one who knows how to open it.

The vault itself is actually the entrance to a vast cthonic labyrinth that is booby-trapped from floor to ceiling with instant death in many different and exotic flavors and absolutely festering with high-level monsters, including Helions.



With an average level of 90, Helions are the vault’s primary security system. Not only are they extremely high-level but they respawn endlessly, making them a challenge even for a group of level 100 players unless they have a specific item owned by the guildmaster which can pacify them, the Afterbirth of Arima. They can turn invisible, hide inside the walls, regenerate their wounds, inflict debilitating status debuffs with their bites, and worst of all, are only the underlings of four higher level monsters known as the Horsemen.



The Horsemen will attack you regardless of whether or not you have the item to pacify their soldiers, and will only stand down if you answer one of a number of riddles thought up by the six founding guild members. They lack the ability to hide themselves inside the level like the Helions but can teleport and have enormous strength as well as the ability to revive their fellow Horsemen at half health by sacrificing some of their HP. What this creates is a torturously prolonged battle full of crippling status debuffs and enemies who are not only big and tough but also frustratingly hard to land a hit on.

If you survive that, you will be faced with the vault’s true guardian, the guild golem, who at this point is more of a formality than anything compared to the previous boss rush. While technically higher level than the Horsemen, most players consider him to be a much easier fight just due to the lack of frustrating mechanics.

The treasure room proper is enormous, a full antechamber flooded with mountains and waves of gold coins forming valleys and peaks of rare items, some buried up to the hilt in ill-gotten wealth. While the Syndicate was by no means the strongest guild it was certainly one of the wealthiest, possessing a vast fortune in gold coins and many hard to obtain items. Including, it is rumored, one or two World Items, which are said to be housed inside the vault.

No worries, take your time! I made the character sheet template pretty extensive, so even I haven't finished my sheets for the first two major GMPCs xD

One to OP... you have seen the anime and/or read a couple of the novels, right? Think "stomp on everyone that isn't from YGGDRASIL". Characters will be at least level 80-100, usually in the mid-to-upper nineties or even 100 for most player characters. The RP is less about giving players a challenge in combat (because at the end of the day most RPers and gamers alike will agree simulated combat with no tangible reward isn't very satisfying) and more about giving you power and seeing what you do with that power, with the challenges being mostly strategic, practical and moral. Gathering resources, making allies, establishing a power base, and just flat out surviving in a new world.

Remember the "fight" with the Slane Theocracy and how Ainz's biggest concerns weren't defeating the soldiers but rather gaining the trust of Carne Village/Gazef and whether or not attacking the soldiers who were massacring Carne Village would aggravate the Slane Theocracy? The motto is "Brute force won't solve all your problems, and sometimes it'll even create some".

And yeahhhhhh, try to avoid that first one (though LordSwagger is okay). Touch Me and the name I'm giving the guildmaster are about as far as I'm willing to go in that regard. Feel free to be goofy (I love the creativity people have with their Steam names for example), but no "XxX" or clan tags, please. Stuff like Luci★Fer, Variable Talisman, Punitto Moe, Blue Planet, Herohero, and Peroroncino (my favorite Supreme Being in terms of name) is what we're looking for.

My favorite scene would have to be the Ainz/Momon vs. Clementine fight. Defeating one of the most powerful humans (so far at least) using no weapons, no magic, just a hug. What makes the whole scene sweeter is the small hint of Ainz's humanity shining through his actions when he reveals his "hypocrisy" at the end.

They left out how her spine popped out of her throat. 0/10 :P

Also I forgot to mention this, but list your race traits in the Race section. The Skills section can/should also include race specific abilities. Obligatory reminder that skills need not necessarily be just fancy sword techniques or martial arts (although a vast majority are). You also get stuff like World Break and Dimension Lock, which are much closer to magic than physical combat.

Interested, incidentally, but I have a couple of questions.

First, what do we know about our guild? Its facilities, ranking, goals, etc. I have an idea for a character that is from a roleplay guild, but I'll have to know whether or not there is a "former" in there somewhere.

Secondly, is this contemporary with the story of Overlord? I have some reservations against fandom RPs that run directly into the canon plotline of their respective subject matter. Especially in this case, since it clashes directly with the canon fate of all of those that stayed online for the server crash.

I'm sure I'll think of more, but this is what I have for the moment.

The guild is primarily an information guild. Not so much focused on PvP as it is information brokering, banking, bartering for rare items and writing guides for new players (back in the day at least). They did their fair share of PvE and even managed to collect a few World Items which have become the greatest treasures of their guild, but basically they're more of a "business" guild than a PK guild like Ainz Ooal Gown.

They're based out of a hollowed out mountain that used to house a small dwarven kingdom and a large underground mine. I'll provide more details later.

As for that second part... well I can't really tell you because of spoilers. I'll PM you with a more straightforward answer, but I'm afraid that's a question I can't just give away. At least not yet.

The other thing is that I feel like five classes is rather restrictive. Especially regarding racial classes, which for hetermorphic characters, multiples are usually chosen. Most characters we've seen have only 5-15 levels in each class, spread across their 100 levels.

Also: what locale was our server? A Japanese MMO player is rather different from an American one.

One more thing: how much do you want written for our spells, abilities and items? In fact, a sample character sheet would be really useful.

The server is Japanese. As for how much I want written, I'll be posting two of my character sheets soon. As I said though, I do expect you to get creative with the spells, skills and items with a minimum of one to two dozen each (perhaps less for items but at least that much for spells and skills). If you really wanted to you could go crazy and write me a list with hundreds of spells, but that'd be a lot of work for everyone, so unless you really want to I'd advise sticking to a cap somewhere between 50 and 80 spells/skills (you'll get the chance to use/create more later).

As for classes, I'm just going off the sheets, which only show up to three race classes and one to five job classes. There are undoubtedly many more spread out across the list with less than five skill points in each that they didn't mention to save space, so in the spirit of YGGDRASIL's player freedom, feel free to expand within reason.

Probably best to work on a basis of "post what's important for now, 'reveal' (make up) any additional information as needed." At least as far as various classes and spells go. I plan on making a character with a lot of items (mostly to make up for their unoptimized build), so that will probably apply there as well.

Also, who here has skype? If we could all form a group chat so we can stay in communication, I think that'd help the RP tremendously :)
