It wouldn't be too bad if they actually put spaces after the commas... Right now the overflowing part is all one "word".

Haha! I totally agree.

However when it comes to Common Sense... Well that's a different story...

A quick suggestion for the Chat...

Can there be a limit placed on how many smilies one can use per line. Several times now I've noticed certain individuals spam the chat with multiple dancing/flashing bananas (multiple being 15+ at a time). I don't mind the smilies in normal conversation, but this same person will also tag EVERY member in the chatbox as well for no reason than to announce his presence. It's just irritating at times.

Yes @NuttsnBolts we agree. We'd also like it if we could have a limit on people tagged. There's been a nasty tendency of people tagging everyone in there without any reason other than to announce their presence. Its kinda annoying to have to go dig up the logs to see who tagged you, only to find out it was somebody tagging everyone without any real reason.

We at least frequent the chat less because we'll regularly be notified about name mentions without anyone actually intending to speak to us specifically.

@Ellri
Issue I thought that could arise if the Tags and smilies are limited is the continual new messages with someone clicking each name and following up with a sudden 'enter' press. In that case, maybe if a certain number of messages are put up in a certain amount of time, a short time out is issued.

Eg: if 3 messages appear within 10 seconds, a 15 second cool down period is issued

Now I could be going about this the wrong way and someone else may have a more refined option, but it might restrain those that wanna spam cause they know the more they do it, the less they'll be able to speak.

We can't stop all spam without unreasonable and impractical restrictions, @NuttsnBolts. What we can do is stop the vast majority of it.

a 5 to 15-minute timeout of you go above a certain number of smileys and/or notifications in a single post and/or timeframe (your 10 seconds seems nice) ought to be reasonable.

We know bigger IRC channels tend to punish people for pinging everyone. We don't want to be as harsh here as some of them can be, but a reasonable level of control over such ought to be acceptable.

It might be us feeling crotchety and not-young, but our impression is that the vast majority of those who do spam smileys and/or notify everyone regularly are among the younger tiers of guild members. Anyone else get a similar impression?

That seems unnecessarily strict. I often do this in IMs without any spam involved... Much annoyance has been had at things arbitrarily locking me out for just trying to converse with people elsewhere.

@Shienvien
That's fair enough and why I mentioned that someone with a more refined idea would be welcome to have an input (More or less a brainstorm while experiencing the frustration). The point being that both @Ellri and I have experienced a few people post obvious spam and I was curious if there was a soft approach that could be made to help combat it, rather than ignore buttons or muting the chat.

As for Ellri's comment on the age, it would seem so however I do know a few of the members are of the older age bracket so we can't say it's an exclusive factor.

One approach would be using chatmods (so people who can subjectively judge who is spamming and can apply limited cooldowns - since they can't actually ban people from the forums/etc, the filtering for them doesn't need to be as strict as with "real" mods). If someone just does not seem to get it after a long while and chatmods start to remember the person, "real" mods can get involved and further decisions can be made.

True. a few people empowered a little would do a lot. But we still think some sort of system to deal with mass-notification would be very helpful...

Maybe a system that checks whether there are more than say, eight notifications in a single post, it disables the notification parsing for said post? That way, try to ping everyone, nothing happens.

is that feasible code-wise?

If it is, it should be a larger number than eight. I say this because some GMs use the mention feature to get the attention of their players to announce something in the OOC.

Aye, @Melkor. We're discussing chat.

The Forum element of the guild needs no limiter.

In principle, someone could take the time and send a notification to everyone in the whole guild in a single post. Not sure why they'd bother to do so, but there's probably nothing that prevents them from doing so, other than the character limit per post. To cover everyone, they'd probably need to use a few posts.

Sorry for the double post.

Apparently if you put >. infront of a line it causes it to be green.

>. Hello

I feel like that shouldn't happen. It applies to the sideways face.

In practice, you'd run into the character limit long before.

And the text turns green because it parses it as greentext, which is some kind of IM thingy, as far as I'm aware.

Aye. we realized that (see last half of the above).

When we began writing it, we were thinking in the mindset of the rather larger character limit found on certain other forum frameworks.

I figured that it was some sort of IM code. I just thought I'd bring it to someone's attention because I find it a bit odd.

That's because it's a reference to the 4chan's greentext and other IM which use that.

Could there be a method implemented to allow every page/post in a thread to be saved? Even if it's a hacked in solution to allow all posts to be displayed on an (extremely long) page, wouldn't something to archive a thread be possible?
