Hello fellow roleplayers!

I have in mind a game in which we play out the usual business of the usual medieval fantasy adventures. The world is just like it always is; full of wizards and dragons and knights and bandits and rogues and all of that. And we're the usual adventurers, braving it all, trying to find our place in it. So far, everything is as it always is. No surprises.

My one radical idea is that we skip the GM and the red thread of the story. Everyone is the GM! Noone is the GM! How would that work, then? We would of course need rules, or guidelines, do define what we can and cannot do.

For starters, I'm thinking:

  • We are allowed one protagonist each. Our protagonist is our personal hero with which we experience and interact with the game. Our protagonist has Rights; you can't kill another players protagonist without her/him agreeing on it. You can't control another players protagonist. You can't decide if or how another players character gets hit or notices something. Basically, your protagonist is your own and is basically untouchable.
  • We are allowed several NPCs each. NPCs are other inhabitants of the gameworld. An NPC can be anything from a questgiver to a barmaid or perhaps some kind of monster or villain. NPCs have little or no rights. You may control or kill other players NPCs at will. If doing so, you might first want to consult the creator to avoid frustration or anger, but you don't have to. It is ok rule-wise.
  • We are all allowed to create lore for the world. We can make up settlements, schools of magic, peoples, cultures, monsters... you name it. Once created, the particular piece of lore belongs to it's creator, but not entirely; other players may add information as long as it doesn't contradict the already established lore.
  • Apart from these rules/guidelines, the usual code of conduct still applies. Don't be an asshole. Don't purposefully sabotage the game for other players. As the owner of the thread, I reserve the right to kick assholes from it.

I think this might be a fun and interesting take on the usual fantasy adventure story. Do you feel the same? Join in! Do you want to add or dispute something in the rules this far, or just ask something? Go ahead!

Hell, I like fantasy and I like creative freedom. Sign me up.

Although, you gonna go ahead and create some over-arching plot to loosely tie everything in? You know, a bog standard encroaching evil that needs addressing? Or we just gonna go freeform?

Here's some lore for ya, fresh out of the oven. A possible place for people to go, perhaps? I dunno, use it or lose it, I just enjoy writing for fun.

If we can fill the world with all sorts of interesting people and cultures, I'd be all for it. I specialise in nonhuman Races, mostly. This seems like my cup of tea.

I feel in. I have an idea for a character that I could bring back up for this. I actually could probably use quite a few characters. While I don't know if I entirely agree with the only one protag-character rule, I see where it comes from and won't argue. [Yeah I dangled my preposition. Don't feel like resetting it now.] I like the opportunity to build as we go. But I do wonder, what's the technology level and magic level that's at least offered on the surface?

We could most definitely use this if the game flies! Thank you!

I like the interest! I just want to make one thing clear, to avoid confusion: this is not primarely a worldbuilding game. This is a fantasy adventure game with a dash of worldbuilding in it. I'm pretty sure you'd already figured that out, but... I wrote it anyway I guess.

About the magic and tech: My own personal idea is that we start out with early medieval technology, but if someone wants to introduce something different then that's fine. As for magic, it's up to us to decide, together.

So, there'll be worldbuilding then. Great.

Anyways, I have to say that I oppose the idea of "making it up as we go", at least in the more literal sense. I think that there should be at least some collaboration between players during the pre-starting phase of the roleplay to devise at least some sort of loose, initial guidance for the story direction. Otherwise, I fear it'll just be really bad and everything will fall on its face.

How generic fantasy are we talking with the basic setting? Goody Elves, Greedy Dwarves, Baddy Orcses, the suite?

I'm going to make Amokan my personal side project for this evening. Will be detailing the locations and various factions involved, but i wont make it too epic, just brief descriptions - enough to give those who visit there something to go on.

Perhaps some of you world builder enthusiasts would like to make your own little kingdoms/places, so we could stitch them together into some kind of region? Have it so that each area has its own problems? Maybe not as good as an over-arching plot, but it's better than everyone just rofling around in taverns and forests.

I'm personally tempted to take on the role of the Desert King; I'd certainly find work for your characters!

Anyways, I'll let you know when I'm done with Amokan so y'all can have a look see.

How is this role play going to deal with the fourth wall? Can the characters argue with the Narrator? (The GM)

Are the characters going to be aware of their own statistics and dice rolls?

I don't see why they would be. And this isn't a good idea.

Are we even doing dice rolls?

I didn't say we would be rolling dice. I meant that the characters might be aware they are in a game.

After all, the term GM was used so I took it to imply this was based off a role playing game. It's not a game without dice or some other means of random determination.

The usage of the term GM doesn't automatically mean the involvement of traditional game mechanics. This is a predominantly freeform website, so naturally it is more likely that there will not be a game system in place. Especially when the word is already widely used here in reference to the more freeform style of thread management and plot construction.

Not saying you're wrong, though. The OP not mentioning anything about mechanics doesn't automatically mean that they're not in place. I just think that your logic isn't really absolute.

One of us is looking stupid here. This didn't have to happen.

Unfortunately, I must do the opposite. I cannot simply assume that nobody understands English and go by what I presume they mean.

Hence my asking for clarification.

Is there any give to the rule on one protagonist? The very appeal to the fantasy characters I have in mind is that one's a Blood Knight and the other's a Paladin and they're dating. If not, I'm sure I'll come up with someone else. However, if you're into anecdotal evidence, I have played in a similar "Everyone GMs" freeform like this, where multiple protagonists were allowed, and it ran just fine. As long as there's good characters, and people can stay in those characters and keep their GM selves separate, it's a whale of a time. Of course, if you're trying to keep the adventuring party from becoming an adventuring army I could understand, but this is a large group roleplay, so that might end up happening regardless.

I guess there is a litany of problems that come with multiple characters, though, since I guess they can be tough to differentiate in narration sometimes and maybe things get weird if they're in wildly different locations. But I won't argue with the rules or attempt to change your opinion. I get the sentiment behind that rule, and what you say undoubtedly goes. All I can say is that I'm up for some awesomeness and definitely interested. ^.^

That sounds like it has potential for vast quantities of fun.

@Duck I know you're aiming for more early medieval levels of technology, but if I made my own kingdom/region like Frengo here, would I be allowed to lean more towards Steampunk tech?

I tend to have too many ideas, especially now. :/
