Crazy

In a world gone insane, the moral compass is an inhibition.

Uh huh, you're awake, well now isn't that a blessing?

It's okay, it's okay. You're safe now, you can relax. Let me dim the lights a little, hah, I find this artificial lighting nonsense makes me a little cra... ahem, on edge too.

The restraints? Oh don't worry, it's protocol for all new arrivals. We've got to be careful, you understand. We'll have those off you in a jiffy, but I just need to ask you a few questio- yes, yes, I know it's been a dreadful 72 hours, but you must understand, you're lucky we let you onto the Rig alive. We haven't picked up a survivor in over two months, and then suddenly, "BOOM!", we got a whole mess of ya. The "decontamination" process is a tad on the harsh side, but it has kept us safe in the past, and I think it will keep us safe now.

Oh, the Rig? Well, I guess it's proper name is the United Nations Rally Point Number 601 dash 341. It's an- was - an oil rig, disused before we arrived thankfully, so many of its er... easily molested functions were already removed. Yup, just one metal four-legged island in the middle of nowhere. It's safe, you'll see.

Relax, take it easy, your heart is spiking in the wrong direction. Look, just calm down, and answer my questions, and we can get you out of here.

My name? Sure, if it'll help you get more comfortable.

Well, I'm Doctor Morgan, I'm with the USMC 22nd... hah, yeah, that's right. We're mari- well, they're marines. I'm just something they seconded from elsewhere. Long story short, you're safe. There's a lot of bad ass men and women patrolling the decks, and a helluva lotta sea between us and the continent. Your struggles are over, for now anyway. Everything you've seen over the past few months, everything you've done to survive, forget them all.

This is your new life.

So, how about answering me some questions?

Dr. Morgan smiles as he places the camera back onto the stainless steel table. He is an elderly man, somewhere between sixty and seventy. He's wearing a freshly pressed black suit and a light blue shirt with a pink tie. He has a full head of white hair, and a neatly trimmed beard that still holds a hint of black; his pale skin is creased and blemished, but his friendly eyes overshadow all imperfections. He is indeed a calming influence for you, of late.

There's a knock on the door, and it opens. You turn your head, and sink further into your cushionless seat as two soldiers walk in. Their uniforms are clean, and their weapons are polished - it would seem they haven't seen action for some time. You allow yourself to believe that the Rig is truly safe, but everything you've seen over the past few weeks causes you to doubt this notion.

"Is the patient ready, Doctor?" says one of the soldiers; he's a man of middle height, with a face obscured by a black bandana. He looks at you suspiciously, and you turn away.

"Yes, yes, they're quite ready," Doctor Morgan replies, smiling. He reaches forwards suddenly, and produces a key. Within seconds, your handcuffs are unlocked from the table, and a pair of heavy hands are pulling you to your feet. "These gentlemen will show you to your new home," the Doctor explains, offering you one last look of genuine friendliness.

A few metal corridors later, and you arrive at your destination: a large room, where there are gathered other survivors who wear the same white jump suits as you. Your arrival is monitored by them all. You notice that there is no furniture in this room, save for a few sleeping bags scattered across the floor. Up top, along a catwalk, a marine marches by with the utmost disinterest.

"We'll come for you tomorrow," one of the marines says quietly in your ear. "To allocate work. There's lots to be done around here, let me tell you."

And with that, the marines are gone. The door slams shut, and you hear it bolt from the other side.

Welcome, to your new home.

Rules and Advisories, Summaries and Explainers

The GM: Is me. Hello, nice to meet you. I'll be er, observing, guiding and murdering your characters through the story. To elaborate, I will control several key NPCs, and all hostile NPCs. From start to finish. I will also destroy inactive characters, and shunt the group forwards if I fear that they are being too sluggish. What I say happens, happens.

The Players: That's you guys, hey, how are ya? Your goal is to see your character survive this roller coaster of violence. Oh, what's that? Ah yeah, spoiler alert, this RP will be very gory and questionable moral decisions will need to be made. Sometimes against NPCs. Sometimes against each other.

You will ultimately steer the story, though I will obviously be trying to coax you in various directions - and sometimes I will force you down certain roads if I think the RP has hit a lull due to a boring situation.

Your characters are totally free to do anything within the confines of their situation. No NPC, no matter how significant, is beyond your character's ability to outright kill. Don't like the way old lady Darson is giving all her candy to her granddaughter? Shoot her in the face. Hell, shoot the kid too. Take a candy and teabag your victims. I wont judge you; the world around you might, and so might the other characters and players, but I wont.

If you want your character to go through a door, then go through it! If you want them to climb a ladder, then go climb a ladder. Be free, be free as a bird. What I don't want you doing however, is spawning NPCs all over the show. That's my job, and if you start doing it as well, things may get crowded.

A Game, or a Roleplay? This falls right into that middle ground, between both. There are no mechanics, no dice rolls, no cards, nothing of the sort. This is, for all its grandeur, a creative writing experience such as any other roleplay. However, however, however... there are exceptions.

Throughout the RP, aside from playing the NPCs, I will be looking for characters to slip up in some form. Fred might walk into a room without checking what's behind the door, Dora might walk down into a dark basement without a torch. Jim might try to disarm a bomb without any previous experience in dealing with such things.

The result of these scenarios? Possible character death. Yes, I will be actively seeking to kill your characters off, and the more excuses you give me, then the more likely it will happen. If such an event does indeed befall your character, then I will narrate their demise suddenly, and without warning.

Now that doesn't mean if you slip up, your character dies. It all depends on how outrageous their blunder is, and how many times they make these kinds of mistakes. I wont keep rigid track of them all, I wont toss a coin, I'll simply decide their fate based on my mood at the time. By mood of course, I mean I'll be thinking one of two things:

"Well Josh was a bit cheeky walking through the electrified water, I better have him drop dead."

or.

"Well, I guess he's been pretty careful so far, maybe I'll just have him shocked."

My decisions cannot be subject to criticism, unless you think I have misread your post. If your character is dead, then they are dead. However, I'm generally quite kind, and players will be probably be smart enough to minimize risk to their characters so it probably wont happen often.

But I will use this power when I see justifiable need.

Second Characters: In the unlikely event that you totally f**k everything up and get your character killed, then yes you make another. Their entry into the RP can be decided between yourself and yours truly, so that their appearance in the plot doesn't muddle anything.

T-1C: In short, it is a virus that makes people murderously insane. Victims are still people, like me and you, it's just that they want to hug you. To death. With razor blades.

The virus is spread rapidly, by any and all bodily fluids. If someone pisses in your eyes, you're going to go totally insane within seconds. If you get blood on you, then it better not have fallen in a cut, or the same goes. So basically, don't get anything wet and sticky anywhere near your blood stream.

Victims are able to act normal for a short time, but they will quickly lose patience. They have no super powers, no abilities, they're just totally nuts and they want you to either join them or die. They will work together, but sometimes fall outs do occur. They have no formal organization, though they can use tools and vehicles.

Self preservation isn't their thing, so fear tactics are a no go. Picture an intelligent running zombie that wants to vomit in your mouth, and you're half way there.

And the World? Yeah, hate to break it to ya, but it's all fucked in classic post-apocalyptic fashion. How the infected haven't managed to launch nukes at everything, is anyone's guess, considering they have infested most the world. But then I guess that would be pointless to the virus, wouldn't it? Viruses don't like the idea of killing themselves.

Enclaves of survivors exist, and the U.N still has a sizable military contingent ... somewhere ... but aside from that, everything is doomed and things are looking pretty bleak for mankind. Well, for mankind as we know it in any case.

It has taken only months for T-1C to do all of this, by the way. Yeah, yeah it's pretty potent.

How Often Do I Post? Often enough not to post block somebody. Seriously, I detest that behavior UNLESS there's a good reason to go with it. Other than that, I'm pretty lenient. This is a casual RP, so I guess a few paras' a post will do for length.

My Character Sheet? Yeah don't worry about copying the Doc' words, just make a sheet that contains all the information I asked for. Real simplez. In fact, here it is, to save you the time. View raw to get the bold without having to faff.

  • Name:
  • Gender:
  • Age:
  • Nationality:
  • Surviving Family:
  • Former Occupation:

My name is Kahleen Cuthald. I'm a woman of the age 21. Germany is my mother country, but at the age of 18 I decided to move to America. More specifically, New York, Ohio. The reason is as simple as can be. I love English and I've wanted to live in America since age 15. So I did it. There's really nothing else to it. Kinda bold and stupid, but it worked out great.

For my looks; I have long brown hair that goes down my back. I am petite and thin. Because of the lack of food during this awful time, I am a
little underfed. My skin is pale at the moment - lack of vitamin D. My eyes are green.

Before all this happened, I worked at a nursery school. I've always been good with kids, so I made it my life.
It was a small nursery school and I had my own group. The group was only as big as 12 kids, more or less. Besides me in that group there were three other educators. Two women and a man. But that doesn't matter right now.

All my family live in Germany and I haven't seen them for about six months. I hope they're safe.
But there's someone else I consider family. Her name is Jamie Alycia Reyes. She is the sweetest human being on earth. But let's not get into me swooning over her. All that matters is that she is safe. Please tell me she is somewhere here. She is my life, she is my love.

We were together when it all started. She came running into my work place and basically dragged me out of there. I tried to fight it, I didn't believe what she was telling me about the virus spreading in my work place. But it spread quickly and soon one of the nursery teachers attacked a child.
Not thinking about it, I pushed her away from the screaming child. Jamie suddenly held an extinguisher in her hands and while there was screaming and yelling she kept hitting the woman. I don't remember what was said, it was all so much. But I remember her grabbing my hand and telling me that we need to go. I am not sure if that woman is dead. Did my girlfriend kill someone?!

Jamie and I ran out of the place. She pulled me all the way to our home and shut us in the garage. She shut the windows, she shut all doors, she even put the closet in front ot the window. We survived like this as long as our food lasted, but in the end we had nothing to eat left. Thanks to Jamie, who's a cook, we lasted a few months - which is pretty insane! I wonder why she knew we'd need to sit in the house for months with no one saving us... Somehow she just knew what to do. Questionable? I don't know.

With "weapons" (knives from the kitchen and a hammer) we sneaked out to get food. The world was already a mess. I was shocked. We went through the streets, luckily they were empty. I wonder why we didn't meet any infected people?

By the time we reached the grocery store, my heart was pounding. Something felt wrong. But I pushed the feeling behind. My girlfriend and I entered the store. Still nothing. It was empty too, as far as I could tell. It was a mess. Most food was gone. We only found three cans of beans, a rotten tomato and a bag of spaghetti noodles. Not very helpful.

Just as we wanted to leave, there was a noise. I stopped. It sounded like a cry. Did the infected people cry? Or was it somenoe who survived?
My curiousity won and I sneaked down the isles until I reached a door that lead to cleaning supplies for the staff. But the noise was gone.
Heart pounding, I opened the door.
There sat a boy, age 9, brown hair, bleeding leg and he was crying. He was hugging his legs and his blue eyes looked up to me.

I couldn't even ask "who are you?" because in the next second five obviously infected people have found us. I knew we could have gotten away, but I didn't wanna leave the boy there. So I pulled Jamie inside the small room and locked the push-to-open door with everything we could move.
We sat there and hoped it'll last. And it only did because something in the store, or someone, distracted the people outside the room. They left us in there to die. Literally. They blocked the door. I don't know how, I just remember we didn't get out.

The next thing I know, after sitting there for days nobody counted, the door opened and the light was too bright for me to see anything.
We were all underfed by the time, pale and the boy - who's name I found out is Jayden - was nearly dying. Jamie, who has some medical knowledge, fixed his leg as best as possible.

And now I am here. That's all I remember right now.

// I hope I can just post this here, I am not so sure about that. Excuse the long text. If I forgot anything, please tell me.

@KahleenCuthald Accepted, although are you intending to play as Jamie and Jayden too? Or are they going to be tag-along NPCs? Not a problem either way, I just want to know so I know how significant they are.

If you do intend on using them, could you give a description of them, for my benefit, and the benefit of the other players.

I've got a feeling that Jayden would be in a separate area of the rig, possibly a medical bay, but Jamie would be with Kahleen - for the RP's start, in any case.

Cheers :)

@Frengo Thank you for accepting. Jayden is just a sidekick. Tag-along NPC. So you can do whatever you want with him.
Out of my perspective it'd be more interesting to see someone else play Jamie. Kinda more interesting to not decide over your lovers actions and all, you know. But I don't wanna load Jamie on you or anyone else, because that'd be unfair. So if you offer to take her, that'd be cool. Otherwise, I'mma play her too. Jamie is a full on charcter out of my view, because she is so important for Kahleen. (Kahleen is so whipped.)

Short Jamie Knowledge:

Name: Jamie Alycia Reyes
Job before all this: Chef at a fancy restaurant
Location: USA, NY, Ohio
Age: 23
Personality: kind to everyone, super protective, badass on the street, loyal and honest, lies make her go mad, not afraid to say what has to be said, or do what has to be done, her father was a surgeon there she got her medical knowledge from, but he died of cancer when she was 19, she loves animals and is vegeterian

I hope on Jamie that is enough so far.

@KahleenCuthald Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm, I would like to say yes, but I don't know if I could do it indefinitely. This RP might become a massive workload for me, which I have time for, but managing a fully functioning character on top of the NPCs might break the camel's back.

So, provisionally, she's yours.

Unless we have someone who wants to play as her? To make the position more attractive, perhaps allow any potential players to customize her a bit to fit their own tastes?

Let's see what happens, and revisit the issue just before we launch.

ANYWAY, I've got a question for you all. This RP can start two ways.

Option A) A slow start, that will allow for your characters to get all cosey with each other in the big room for a round of posts or two.

Option B) Things get hectic, immediately.

What are we all feeling?

@Frengo I am fine with anyone costumizing her. All that I ask is for her to be an open hearted person. Other than that, go crazy. I am also fine with you costumizing her if you wanna take over.

We could also start with you playing her, and if it gets too much you just PM me or something and I take over. I'm flexible like that.

I am for option A, but like I said: flexible here.
Shall I put Kahleen up on the Character feed?

If anyone is interested to play Kahleen's (my) girlfriend Jamie, make her yours. Just don't make her bi - she gay ;)

I'll see, nearer the time; it'll depend entirely on how much free time I predict myself to have prior to launch. Whatever happens, I'll let you know before we start.

For now, move them both to the character tab, thanks :)

@AbysmalDemon I thought your name was familiar!

The app is totally fine, ticks all my boxes; besides, peoples' real talent usually comes out in the execution of their posts, so I don't pay much attention to the "quality" of their sheets, just so long as they're not cringeworthy and make sense. :P

Move Etzer over to the character tab, if you'd be so kind.

Where is the Rig located?

That's for the characters to find out. But from what Morgan has revealed, there's a lot of sea between the Rig and the "continent." So Europe, or America, most likely.

Well, he's English speaking, and is apart of the 22nd USMC Regiment, which points you in the direction of either the Atlantic or the Pacific. The East Coast or the West Coast.

So 50/50 on that, and then there's the working out of how you got to the Rig.

No doubt you've guessed a plane can't land on an oil rig, so you were brought in by helicopter.

Your average American military helicopter can travel anything between 350-400 miles on a full tank of fuel.

That's as bout as much as your characters will know for themselves. If they want to know more, they'll have to ask the NPCs... who may or may not give up the information.

@Frengo

Ember Marie Forrester | Female | Age 9

”Monsters that live inside my head at night are all right cause they can never compare to the ones that live outside.”

_Appearance_
At 3’0, Ember could be described as petite and slender. Her skin is blemish free aside from a few scars on her hands and knees from falling. Her long dark curls hung to her waist and she has bright blue eyes like her brother. She is not very strong though she has quite a kick. She normally dresses in leggings, a skirt, a shirt, a jacket and running shoes.

_Nationality_
White. To be more specific, she is Irish, understands Gaelic but her family moved to the U.S. where she was born.

_Surviving Family_
None.

_Former Occupation_
She was a student though she did help her mother out at the clinic so she picked up a few medical skills though it is mostly basic first aid.

_Strengths_
♦ She is very good at being quiet and sneaking around.
♦ Light on her feet.
♦ Quick reflexes and nimble fingers.
♦ Her brother taught her how to set traps and how to shoot a gun as well as a small bow.

_Weaknesses_
♦ She tries to see the good in everybody and this at times will keep her from seeing the evil there as well.
♦ She doesn’t think if someone is in trouble, she tends to just rush to help without thinking of the consequences.
♦ Bottling up her problems and pain. No one can help if they don’t know what’s wrong with her.

_Personality_
Ember is normally described as a kind and caring individual. She tends to put others needs before her own and won't hesitate to help someone if she feels they are in need of assistance. She also has her shy moments where she tends to look at the ground and not really talk to anyone. She gets nervous when meeting new people and doesn't speak much until she gets to know them better. Despite all of this, Ember has a stubborn streak like her brother and will not budge if she sets her mind to something. She's not one to anger easily but once she is watch out because she can have quite the temper and is not afraid to give you a piece of her mind. Of course, afterwards she will be completely mortified by what she said and will apologize profusely to the person she grew angered at. If she thinks they deserve it that is. If she feels you completely had what was coming to you, not one word of apology will leave her lips though secretly she will still feel rather bad about it. Another trait of Ember's is that she has a bad habit of bottling up her problems so the people around her will not worry. Even if she is having the worst day imaginable she will still put on a smile and say everything is fine.

_Backstory_
Ember was born the youngest of three children to parents Luna and Mark Forrester, an Irish couple that meet in high school. Her older brother lived in Ireland with their parents until he was eight before they had to move overseas due to their father’s work. There, the small family settled down in the U.S. When her brother was ten years old, Luna found out she was pregnant with twin girls. Orion was so happy at the fact that he was going to be a big brother and often lay next to his mother and talked to the girls growing in her womb. When the twins were born, Orion fell in love with Ember and Willow from the moment he held them. As they grew, he was always there. He witnessed their first step and he felt so thrilled when Ember’s first word was not “mama” or “dada”, but Ri, as close as she could come to his name. Their parents firmly believed in their culture and so Orion and the twins knew how to speak English as well as Gaelic.

The day the world had gone to hell was the day the family had gone out to celebrate Ember making really good grades in school. As they finished dinner, screams broke out from outside and as everyone in the restaurant stared in shock, a man fell through the doors, another man attached to him and trying to spit at him. As more people ran by the window being chased by others, chaos broke out. Orion scooped up Ember, her mother grabbed Willow and they ran for their car. They made it to the car without encountering anyone though one man tried to jump Orion's father though he quickly was introduced to Orion's fist. Guess those fighting lessons paid off.

The family drove through the streets and holed themselves up in their house. Their father had a habit of hoarding food and that paid off in the end. Sadly, as much as they tried to conserve it, their food ran out about a month later. Their father decided to go see what he could scavenge but unfortunately he didn't come home that night. The family waited two days, praying he would come home safely but he never did. Not able to take it anymore, their mother instructed Orion to look after the girls and headed out in search of her husband.

She didn't come home that night either.

Orion didn't know what to do. He couldn't just leave the girls there alone while he tried to find their parents but they also couldn't stay inside or they would starve. He decided they needed to leave, to go find their parents or food. He took the girl's hands and the trio quietly stuck out of their house. They used allies and other back roads to make it to a convenience store without being seen. Orion told the girls to wait quietly while he went inside. He managed to get in and out without much problem but things quickly grew dangerous when an infected woman spotted him and charged at him screaming. He grabbed Ember and Willow, taking off as more infected chased them. At one point Willow tripped and was grabbed before Orion could save her.

As her screams filled the air, Orion tucked Ember against him and ran as hard as he could. After that day, the two didn't stay in one place for too long. They got lucky for a time, not really running into danger. But their luck had to run out at some point. They meet another survivor but it was anything but a happy meeting. The trigger-happy man went by the "shoot first, ask questions later" philosophy and managed to clip Orion in the side. The siblings managed to hide in the forest but Ember only knew basic first-aid and soon Orion's wound grew infected.

He passed away a week later and Ember was left to wander the forest by herself. It was then that she meet the marines from the Rig and now here she is.
