What sort of scale are we looking at here? What are the dimensions of this area of the world you've built

Thanks! And I thought maybe we could figure out what kind of game we wanted to play together.

Not sure. But probably pretty big, what with the mountain ranges and all.

So what are we thinking? Fantasy adventure, or NRP, or something else?

NRP sounds possible.

I don't know what NRP stands for, but I'm down for world building.

The map looks fantasy, so I assume that's the direction we're heading?

EDIT: Hold on, let me extrapolate from that there map.

Most "civilized" people live within those mountain borders, around the lake. Though there are probably lands across the sea to the east. The rest of the land is taken up by other people. Barbarians if this is an all human world but maybe warring tribes of orcs and wargs and stuff. There are some "civilized" outposts out there, to keep an eye on things.

The river extending South West has some settlements. Probably a river boat culture, sort of the last bastion of civilization outside of the mountain barrier. They're a hardy people, every man woman and child carries a weapon.

I see a string of mountains just before the snowy lands of the North, and the few passes are guarded by towers. A bit GoT, but maybe there's something awful up North. Giants? We'll discuss it. The towers are to keep watch for whatever it is.

There's a few holds, almost entirely within the mountain barrier. And a bigger one on the coast that is probably a capital. The south most one, and the one by the bridge at the north east tip of the barrier mountain are charged with keeping the barbarian/bad races out of the good lands.

Thoughts? More specific ideas? Disagreements?

Nation Role Play.

Though to be honest, perhaps it would be better to go to a more traditional fantasy context.

Up to the Gm, but I don't mind... concept looks solid to me.

Perhaps if I can come up with things to throw in at some point I will - I'm just on too many other things right now to dedicate too much onto this one.

So this will be some sort of alliance of holds, rather than a kingdom. Each will have it's own ruling family. It could be the Human Alliance, unless this is going to be a multirace world.

These are people who don't want to live under the Lords of the Alliance. Have a piratey or roguish vibe.

I see a string of mountains just before the snowy lands of the North, and the few passes are guarded by towers. A bit GoT, but maybe there's something awful up North. Giants? We'll discuss it. The towers are to keep watch for whatever it is.

Every member of the Alliance's central military(we'll come up with one) has to do a tour of duty up there.

There's a few holds, almost entirely within the mountain barrier. And a bigger one on the coast that is probably a capital. The south most one, and the one by the bridge at the north east tip of the barrier mountain are charged with keeping the barbarian/bad races out of the good lands.

The Northguard and Southguard have a lot of political pull in the Alliance, because they're necessary in guarding the lands from outside forces.

The bigger hold is the oldest city in Alliance lands, but it's almost entirely impoverished. They were once a fishing and trading community, but trade to other lands has slowed greatly and the waters have been overfished. Now it's a poor, crimeridden city with poor, unscrupulous Lords.

More thoughts, feel free to jump in anyone and everyone.

Elves:

The "Wandering Folk" live on the wooded island south of Alliance land, right on the border. They are so called, because their homes, veritable palaces, move by magic throughout the forest. Though if you were to stand upon the roof of one, you would look over the tops of the trees, their palaces can't be seen from the outside of the woods, or even from the air. They also cannot be reached on purpose, but can only be arrived at by accident. Even the elves cannot set out to go home once they leave, and have to wander through the forest until they happen upon it. The elves, however, being eternal tend not to be bothered by the extra time it takes to travel, and are quite adept at the mental gymnastics that are required to avoid intentionally seeking the place that they want to go.

The Wandering Folk are prideful, but nonsensical. They are easy to slight by humans, because they take offense seemingly at random. It is not clear to humans whether they want to be offended, or their social cues are so complicated that outsiders step over their manners on accident.

It is said that humans have a high capacity for reason, but a low capacity for magic, and that the Wandering Folk are quite the opposite.

Northwatch, Southwatch, and the True Watch.

I called them Northguard and Southguard before, but I changed it because I wanted to add True Watch and it fits with what will be below.

These are the north-most and south-most holds in the Human Alliance(working name, help me out here people). Each are ruled by a family, both bound by oath to protect the realm where the mountain's natural barrier ends. They do so for different reasons, though. The Kendal family of Southwatch took their oath out of honor, and a desire to protect their fellow man. The Sully family of Northwatch took it as penance for their tyrannical crimes when they were the ruling family in the realm. But the Sully family is nearly extinct. With their last patriarch widowed and without a male heir, both the family and the oath that binds it(and its sworn knights) to protect the realm will soon be null.

The True Watch is a sacred order of knights, all who hold the power of prophecy. It is thought that this power comes to those humans who have the blood of the Wandering Folk in them, and that this is the reason they are most common around Southwatch, close to the Wandering Folk's forest home.
The True Watch have no official keep, but are known for meeting in tents outside or, less commonly, in the halls of families who have invited them to stay. Their mission is to foresee threats to peace, and stamp them out ahead of time. Their vision is not infallible, though, and they've been known to miss things, or predict impending doom only for nothing to happen. They say that time shifts, and that it isn't always easy to follow.

I don't know that anyone is still following this thread, but I'm still coming up with things.

This also gives us a handy plot: aforementioned Sully patriarch dies and leaves a power vacuum in his hold, and a hole in the realm's defenses.
