We are the Watchers. We keep to ourselves, in our small villages in the forests of the world. We fight our wars privately, and leave no trace of our existence to the world. My name is Galahad of the Oakheart tribe. And our people are in danger. We are a small tribe, our village rests in the center tree of the forest. To the east, the Valehearts gather, under their queen, Ciara. They are in search of an ancient Watcher artifact, one that will unleash the wrath of nature upon their enemies. One that will harness an ancient magic that should never be harnessed. Our village stands in their way, and they are sure to burn us to the ground in an attempt to gain power. Our only hope is to find this artifact first, and bring it back. As leader of the Oakhearts, I know what I must do. For we are the Watchers, but we will not watch as our enemies burn our homes.
The so called Watchers are very similar to your everyday human being. In fact, if you weren't looking closely, you'd think they were just shrunken down humans. Most watchers are about the length of your hand. They're eyes are generally pretty big, an evolutionary tool that allows them to see very well at night. Their ears are also more rounded than an average human's and are designed to hear farther and better. One other difference is the length of their fingers. Watcher fingers are considerably lengthier in proportion to a humans, a trait that was developed after years of climbing. A Watcher child reaches the age of maturity at about 15, and if they aren't killed by some outside force, they can live to be 150.
Magic is not uncommon among the Watchers, and almost everyone has a little bit. Those who train in magic are able to harness the four elements, though they often excel with one. Magic is mostly used for healing and battle, though many hunters use the element of air to conceal themselves. A Watcher's items may be imbued with magic if they so desire, and if so they become especially dangerous.
Watchers are extremely in tune with nature, and many of their holidays revolve around such things. The Voyage of the Leaves is a festival surrounding the first fall of leaves, and the Festival of Frost is the celebration of the winter solstice. Disrespecting nature is also very offensive, and considered a crime in most tribes. There are many different Watcher tribes, scattered throughout the world, and most forests contain about 4 or 5 tribes. In Watcher society, all people are equal, and the more you help the tribe, the more respect you get. They speak both English and their own language, but this other language is mainly used for ceremonies. All Watcher tribes are monarchies, where the crown passes to the oldest child, no matter their gender. Rebellions are uncommon, but not impossible. The monarchy is aided in governing by the High Council, a group that consists of the current monarch and 6 other Watchers, who are elected by the people of the tribe, and carry out all trials.
Watcher tribes go to war very frequently, often to take a tribe's village for expansion. These wars rarely result in permanent rewards as the other tribes of the forest will consolidate their power to attack the victorious tribe. Watcher weapons and tools are made from wood and stone mostly, or a lightweight metal with a greenish tint known as leaftonite. Their armor is made from tree bark, leafonite, or leather.
An average Watcher's diet will consist mainly of nuts and berries, although they do hunt small rodents as well, and the occasional bug in extremely hungry tribes. Watcher hunters are extremely respectful of their kills, and bless the animal before skinning it.
A Watcher village is always based around trees. Most villages have many levels, which are reached through hot-air balloon like contraptions. Each village has a market place with many different shops. As Watchers love to dance, their town square is always filled with music and revelers. The royal palace is at the very top of the village, and is commonly built like a fortress. Should the village be attacked, the non-fighting citizens would be brought there. Watcher buildings are built from stone, wood, and leaves.
Watchers mainly use only two types of animals as mounts. Squirrels and birds. Someone of higher position in a tribe may have outfitted their mount with armor befitting their rank, though most of the time a mount is ridden unarmored. Mounts are often raised from birth, and must choose it's rider.
So in this roleplay, we will be playing as Watchers, a small race of humans who reside in the forests of earth. Our particular tribe, the Oakheart tribe, is currently at war with the Valehearts, over an artifact that our leader knows the way to. In an effort to stop the Valehearts, the king sends a group of warriors to find said artifact, led by my character, the prince. So, if your interested, say so down in the comments, and if you have suggestions I'd love to hear them, seeing as how this is a definite work in progress.
It reminds me a little bit of princess mononoke meets the brownies from Willow. (Two of my favorite movies mind you). I like the idea though. :) something I will certainly keep an eye on.
I'm interested in this. Thinking of a character who has basic Earth type magic and specialized healing abilities. Probably uses her earth magic to grow medicinal herbs and stuff to aide in that kind of thing.
