Claus Rotstein had prepared as well as he could. He had gotten hold of some plans for the keep while consulting Alice Rallar, stationed men in crucial positions to easily get to different locations in case of an attack, and also posted a few patrols, mostly to look fancy since it was the lookouts job to sound the alarms should it be needed.
The lookouts were crossbowmen and the scouts, evenly distributed on high grounds along the keep, keeping an ever watchful eye for would be mischievous activities. With a few simple small bugles handed out so every group could call the alarm, and pass on the orders of Claus in the form of rudimentary horn calls.

The main force of the company was stationed close by, in taverns and such and waited for the signal of mobilization should the need arise, they were also going to regularly exchange the guards over the course of the event.

For the inner security, Claus had gotten his personal guard, his most skilled men, and one woman, who all wore the standard gear of the company, but had a few gold trims on their armour and some nice feathers on their helms. Armed with nicer looking halberds and maces, they sure shouldn't be seen as filthy plebs by the fine folks Claus hoped. There was some fifteen-ish people in the "guard", i all truth the steel fist didn't really have a guard segment. There were just some who were more successful than the other troops, and had gotten a few rewards for their hard work. And thus bought some nicer gear with their extra cash to show off.
Since Claus often needed the best in the company on special tasks, and used them as a mini vanguard within the main force led by himself to strike at targets in war, it's nothing strange with the fact that Claus also know these people better since he spends more time with them.

The guard was led by Claus in person, to show that he took this task most seriously. While the whole layout of the guarding wasn't very planned, they kept an attentive eye for problems, and walked straight backed and worked hard to look the part.
Claus himself had made sure to give his armour an extra polish, and gotten a nice small red cape to wear over his left shoulder with some simple silver lining. He also carried all of his weapons and his battle horn.

As he walked around with all the noblemen around, Claus tried to look professional but in truth he had no idea what he was doing. He was a battlefield tactician, not a bodyguard. Sure he had formed a vanguard for a few elven nobles in battle, but a battlefield and a party are two very different things.
Regardless of his expertise in the area, he had no plans for letting any of the people in the keep get attacked on his watch, and as such kept an ever watchful eye and constantly patrolled the party.
None of the nobles struck Claus as pure fighting people, none walked in that unmistakable way of a warrior or a soldier. It was clear that the local nobility was more the diplomatic types. Or more precisely the talk nice and then have you back-stabbed types.

To be honest, Claus was starting to get bored, he helped himself to a drink and took a slight pause while leaning on a table.
There he saw something that stood out.
Claus had seen a few of the nobles with some sort of armour, most carried a dress weapon as well. But none were like this woman he saw now.
The unmistakable march of a soldier, finely fitted full plate armour of intricate design and armed with a.. wooden? greatsword?

Claus was intrigued, not only that women usually weren't the fighting types, but this one seemed to just reek of combat and honestly didn't fit in here at all. Claus just couldn't contain his curiosity, and moved to intercept the woman.

He took a few fast steps dodging a private conversation and a server and managed to get in front, and turned towards her and made a slight bow while addressing her.
-"Milady, would you mind answering a question or two?"

Lupus sat in a tavern inside of Nyhem, 'The Drunken Merchant' it was called. On the outside it was decent enough to look at, nothing falling apart, the wood cut properly with nothing sticking out, the paint was a bit flakey but that was about it. The sign outside was that of a man who was obviously a merchant, and obviously drunk. The inside was a bit different. The walls were covered in soot and dust, as well as a few splatters of ale here and there. And the floors creaked with every step, as if it were about to break at any moment, and were covered with mud, ale, vomit and what looked suspiciously like piss.

It had been a few weeks since the King had died, and people were still mourning his loss. The place was packed with mercenaries, they were causing a bit of a ruckus, but Lupus didn't mind, everyone though did for some reason. People were still in mourning over the King, and these men and women were messing not with the mood, they were all jolly and loud, and that was the problem, people were in a somber mood, and wanted it to stay that way. It seemed the only reason a gift hadn't broken out yet was because people knew better than to get into a brawl with a band of mercenaries who had just come back from a fight. It was almost like everyone had some good sense left in them, well, almost everyone. While most of them weren't drinking, they were still chatting away loudly and cheerfully, as if nothing could break the mood.

Finally, one man seemed to have and enough. He was a short man, dressed in simple yet colourful clothes, and seemed just a little bit tipsy. He stood up from his chair and made his to one of the mercenaries, a tall man wearing armour and covered in tattoos. He went up to him and started shouting at him, and his friends, "HAVE YOU LOT NO RESPECT?! THE KING DIES AND YOU SHOW GREAT DISRESPECT BY BEING JOYFUL AND MERRY!" The man in armour looked down upon the little man, and chuckled to himself, "So what if we are in a good mood, who's gonna stop us from being happy? You?" He started laughing, as did a few of the others with him, "You barely come up to shoulders, and you look more like a jester than a fighter." This got more people laughing, but the little man was so enraged that he seemed to forget himself. He pushed the mercenary as hard as he could, knocking the man over onto his friends and causing everyone to stop laughing.

The tall man got back up slowly, and had a mean look in his eye. He slowly walked towards the short man, and seemed as if that if e got within arms length of the man, that he'd throttle him within an inch of his life. Lupus decided to get up from his seat and try to head off the confrontation before anyone got hurt. He walked between the men and held up his hands, "Peace friends, peace. This is no time for fighting, this is a time for reflection. Yes the King has died, but that does not mean we all must become sad and depressed." He turned towards the little man, "Good sir, these people meant no disrespect to the fallen King. You must understand that they are a band of tough and battle hardened individuals, and may have trouble expressing themselves in a way that people who have never seen the things they have may not understand." He the turned towards the tall mercenary, "And you sir, you and your band must know that this is poor timing to be having parades and to be so loud and boisterous. But, there is something all of you must know." He then stood upon a table and riases his voice more, "The King has died, that is known. But being sad about it and crying over him will not revive him. But, what we can do is celebrate his life. Celebrate his achievements, his legacy and his honour. Celebrate the fact that although he has died, he died at a good age and has left this world a great man." He grabbed a tankard off the table and raised it over his head, "A toast, to those who can't be with us, to them that made our lives better, and less now they our gone. And of course, to the King." A few other raised their tankards and toasted with him.

The tall man and short man looked at each other, there was still hatred in their eyes, but also embarrassment. They gave one another a nod and went back to their own tables. Lupus hopped down from the table and stood in the midst of everyone, "I know that things are still a bit tense, so, why don't I tell a story eh? I promise you that you won't regret hearing my stories. So, what do you all say? Wanna hear a tale or two?" A few people grunted an affirmative, but for the most part everyone seemed uninterested. Lupus nodded, drained his tankard, and put on a serious face.

The main hall of Miserth Keep was a sight to behold. It was the heart of the once formidable Remonnet Empire and it was clear why. The hall was a huge cavernous room with four rows of humongous stone pillars. The floor was a pattern of white and black marble, across which ran a regal red carpet. The carpet ran from the entrance of the hall to the steps of the throne. The throne sat on the far end of the room atop a raised dais climbed up to by two set of wide steps of rough black stone. The throne was made from a special type of wood known as Othalea, carved from an extremely rare tree that only grew in the Elven Imperium. The chair was adorned with red velvet, gold and polished jewels. Personally Duncan thought of it as somewhat ugly, though even he couldn’t deny its grandeur. Around a dozen of the royal guard stood watch over the procession gleaming in their ceremonial armour, alongside several of the iron fist mercenaries. Wooden benches had been set up on the far sides of the hall for the hundreds of Nyhem Nobles who had arrived to watch the processions. Fourteen tables had been set up near the center of the hall, one for each of the high noble families of Formaroth. A banner hung behind each table depicting the crest of whichever house sat in front of it. Duncan sat in the middle of his table. On either side of him sat Alex and Aurelia. Several of the noble houses had already spoken, however none of them had said anything of particular importance yet. Many were just expressing their own opinion on what type of king they wanted and would support. Aureus Wulfrick had just finished speaking and it was now Duncan’s turn to speak on behalf of the De Reimer family. As Duncan rose from his seat the eyes of all the nobles in the hall turned to him.

“Greetings to all of you. As you all know I am Duncan De Reimer and I speak on behalf of both House De Reimer and the imperial court”. Duncan began, though the intro was pointless given that everyone already knew who he was. It was simply a formality and all the other houses had started their speeches in a similar way.
“I believe that many of you are aware that I do indeed plan to put myself forward as the next successor to the throne” Duncan could here murmuring from a number of different tables after this statement, namely from supporters of house Manshrew but he continued on without interruption “I assure you that I put myself forward not out of greed or lust for power, but because I believe through my knowledge and experience I can do what is best for Formaroth. I was given the title of head advisor by King John Remonnet himself. One of the many responsibilities of the head advisor is to act as ruler in a king or queen’s absence. King John believed that I was best suited to rule the kingdom should he ever be unable to. However now that John is dead there are no longer any Remonnets left to take the throne. By default I am next in line to the throne, it is my right. I know I am not tied to the throne by blood, but I was trusted by John to rule the Kingdom in the absence of a Remonnet, and I have more right to the throne than anyone else in this room”. Before Duncan could continue Daeron Humber violently stood up from his chair.

“Do you expect us to trust you snake”? He shouted “You or the rest of your traitor family. You have made it clear just how far you will go for your ambition after you turned on the Remonnets during the civil war”. Duncan turned to face Daeron

“We turned on a vicious Tyrant, not the Remonnets” Though Duncan’s remained calm there was a clear firmness in his voice “Also do be careful who you call traitor, as I remember your family turned on the Remonnets and joined house Manshrew without a second thought”. Daeron opened his mouth to protest but a glace from his head advisor Maerya (whom was sitting next to him) soon stopped him; making a scene during the meeting would reflect badly on him. He threw Duncan a rageful look before he sat back down. Once he was seated Duncan continued.
“To further my claim; I also believe that I am the most qualified individual to rule Formaroth. I have served on the high council for many years and have ruled in John’s absence numerous times. I have the experience and skills needed to rule as king of Formaroth”.

“I agree with Duncan” Said Charles Du Paraquette as he rose from his seat “Already he had proven that he is a competent ruler. In the short time that he has been acting ruler of Formaroth he has increased the well-being of the people of Nyhem and reduced the crowns debt considerably” As Charles sat back down he gave Duncan a small smile; it was clear that he would keep up his end of their bargain.

“Thankyou Charles, your support is appreciated” Duncan said “I trust that you will all make your decision on who to support based off logic and reason and not based off petty bias”. With that Duncan had finished his speech. Many of the nobles had started to quietly confer with each other. As he sat back down he learned over to Aurelia.

“Well I think that went pretty well, don’t you”? He whispered. Before either of them had time to say more Alex had already stood up and started to introduce the next representative.

Rising next was none other than the champion of House Blackwell, the dragon-scale clad soldier Beatrice Blackwell. Her armor, purely of utilitarian desire is ceremonial by proxy of its origins. The woman is wearing the scales of dragons, which shimmer with iridescence as she rises. She carries with her, still, her customary wooden greatsword. Even to a meeting such as this the woman refused to be disarmed- it was her right as a soldier to bear her ceremonial gear.

She clears her throat, and slams a hand into her chest in a warrior's salute, the solid 'thump' a distinct call for attention.

"I am Beatrice Blackwell, Princess of Alenius and Champion of my family. My sister, Naomi Blackwell, and I stand here in the stead of my father, and carry the full weight and authority of his voice and stature as king. I stand here before you all as equals, with the best interests of Formaroth in my heart, and my father's words in my mind. There is one critical piece of business that House Blackwell must make known before our formal stance on the rulership of the nation can be made."

She stands at attention, dropping her salute.

"Houses Staghain, Sutharland, and Blackwell have entered into a mutual defensive alliance, and Houses Staghain and Sutharland have offered their backing to the voice of House Blackwell. We seek not to alienate or aggress any, simply unite our causes and seek a mutual goal. Which Mister De Reimer was so kind as to bring up and address..."

She raises a hand to gesture across the table to Duncan, nodding to him with dutiful respect.

"However, my sister is the one my father has delegated to speak on the main topic. My presence here is as advisor, bodyguard, and supple...suppl...associating...additional..." she sucked in a breath and calmed herself, anger flashing behind her eyes as she struggled to find the right word.

"She's here to introduce father's wishes directly, whereas I'm to speak on the issues at hand objectively." Naomi cut in, placing a hand on Beatrice's arm from where she was seated.

The young girl was an incredibly stark contrast to all those present- she was in her teens, a youth, and one unknown to combat and courly graces. She was, for all intensive purposes, simply a common girl who happened to bear the title 'princess'- and all knew she was a treasure of the Old Man's, a dearly protected and cherished object of the kingdom of Alenius.

On more than one occasion, The Old Man has remarked that he'd let fire destroy Formaroth and the Elves dominate the land before he let harm come to his little girl.

Beatrice looked down to the girl and stepped back, nodding. Naomi then chewed her lip out of nervousness, a tic she couldn't quite drop, and lifted up the cup she had requested upon entering the chamber and being seated- a mug of milk, of all things. She drank from the milk and lifted a hand, signaling she was not finished speaking.

"The defensive alliance with Sutharland and Staghain was brought up first in the spirit of fair play and good will. We did not wish to bring it up later in the discussions and risk the possible declaration of secret alliances and illicit dealings, nor the possible allegations of power grabs. Let it be known, now, that Blackwell supports nobody for the position of king as of the beginning of these negotiations. Perhaps, through the coming conversation, our position may be swayed- but as it stands, Formaroth will split unless unified decision can be made. I'd like to think we can all come to some sort of agreement, but if we can't..."

She sets her mug down, wiping the milk from her mouth.

"And...well...to my understanding, mister De Reimer, other people are probably going to have different opinions on the matter, and I think we should allow all who wish to make a claim step forth and do so, and look at the situation objectively so as to decide who would be best for king- not most qualified, but best. I assure you that I believe I'm quite reasonable- I'm no politician, I'm a mediator. Have been my whole life. That being said, I'm done speaking for now- someone else can go ahead and say their piece. Death's No Stranger."

She concluded her speech with a somewhat comical salute. She seemed legitimately excited about it all. The weight and power of an entire kingdom, as well as the influence and backing of two others, was rested upon the shoulders of a sixteen year old girl bearing the name Blackwell. It was impossible to even comprehend such a scenario occurring, yet here it was.

Andrew rose next. Standing either side of him was two of his elite guard wearing the best armour that Uzgob had to offer. Andrew was wearing a fine Uzgob noble robe, the colour of the robe was that of orange with black accents this was considered as one of the pinnacles of Uzgob fashion, he knew this was an important event and he wanted to show a great respect towards it.

"Greetings to all. I am Andrew Manshrew, I speak on behalf of House Manshrew and all of Uzgob. First of all I would like to thank all of you for the hospitality given to me and my men who have travelled far from our homeland." Andrew could see that many of the nobles were impressed with his polite introduction but he could see that even though Duncan appeared to be impressed to keep up appearances Andrew knew he was not. "Years ago I was invited by a man who showed me and my family the greatest kindness in the aftermath of the war. His name was John Remonnet a great man and a great king which left this world too soon. Before I left Nyhem to return to Uzgob John entrusted to me that he was in my debt and he promised to fulfil that debt so I am here to see that this debt is fulfilled. I also want to repay his kindness and seal his debt by taking his place as King of Formaroth. If I do become king I hope to create unity and equality not only in Nyhem and Uzgob but for all of Formaroth."

"I know some of you still view me as the man that killed a king out of cold blood but I hope to show to you that I more than a king slayer but a kind and just ruler who listens to the opinion of his subjects and allies." Then suddenly Jullon Greensworth stood and shouted "How do we not know that if you won't kill any one who stands in your way and throw your allies aside once their usefulness are at an end!" "How dare you!" shouted Serala Lanistark, "Have you already forgotten that the man you are talking to is the hero of Formaroth and the man which personally killed the tyrant which once sat on that very throne in this room." "Yes I do remember." replied Greensworth "But what's to stop Lord Manshrew from declaring war on the next ruler who he sees fit to label as a tyrant." "Nobles please!" shouted Andrew, the room fell silent. "I want these talks to be peaceful and not fall into chaotic shouting. But may I remind you Lord Greensworth that when House Lanistark fell under attack from Remonnets army I came to help them even at the risk of my own army and kingdom and through that said act has created a strong alliance from it." "Also Uzgob's citizens are treated equally with respect and no one is mistreated" Lanistark finally added. "Thank you Lady Lannistark." said Andrew. Lanistark sat back down in her seat. "So Lord Greensworth have me and my allies answered your question?" Greensworth sat back down in his seat it was obvious to everyone in the room that he had made a fool of himself. Finally Andrew said "I thank you for listening and your time." After concluding his speech Andrew sat back down, all Andrew could do now was to wait and hope that these talks would end quickly and peacefully.

An Exchanging of Words: The Night of the Meetings End
Contributed by: @TheDuncanMorgan@MacabreFox

The Head Advisor's chambers were dimly lit. The darkness of night had set in and the only source of light in the room was from the fireplace, that and a small candle that was lit on Duncan's desk. Duncan was currently sitting at his desk chair with his head looking at the ceiling. It was strange to think that in a matter of weeks these would no longer be his quarters. Soon he would be king and would have to move into the royal bedchamber. An idea he was not fond of; he had grown of his room and knew all of it's secrets. The meeting had gone better than he feared, but worse than he had hoped. As of now all he could do was wait, this was the calm before the storm.

During the time from the gathering of the Houses from across Formaroth, Aurelia had witnessed the meeting, and kept her mouth shut, respectfully in that time. However, by the time all of the nobles had departed from Nyhem, it left her feeling apprehensive. As such, the nighttime hours drew closer, and left her feeling restless. She walked alone in the empty halls of Miserth Keep, her footsteps echoed with a faint noise down the stone corridor, in which she wandered towards the Head Advisor's chambers, hoping once more, to see Duncan.

She needed to talk to him about what occurred in the meeting, and what to expect next. In truth, she was afraid of a revolt, or an impending civil war, whether her fears were unfounded or not, Aurelia still needed to clear her head. She came upon the familiar, heavy, oak door to the chamber room, and gave a sharp rapt upon the door with her knuckles. Aurelia wore a striking red, velvet gown, with black trim, giving her the appearance of a deadly sorceress, were there ever such a thing. She even had shoes too match, along with a matching set of garnet earrings, including a golden bracelet with garnets inlaid in the gold, along with a quality crafted necklace to pair it off. She didn't bother waiting for a reply, as it had become a custom to her, Duncan had become aware of her knocking, and would not be surprised to see her, as she had done it previously before in the past. Pushing the door open, Aurelia poked her head around the door, and spotted Duncan seated at his desk, his gaze turned to the ceiling. At first, she lingered in the doorway, unsure if he was sleeping, when she noticed him blink, Aurelia stepped inside the room, and closed the door behind her quietly.

"Duncan... I wanted to speak with you. Is now a good time?" Aurelia asked, keeping her voice low so as not to sound overbearing. She folded her delicate hands in front of her gown, and raised her brows in a manner as if to say, "Well?"

Duncan slowly looked down from the ceiling. Even before he saw her he knew it was Aurelia; she had a very unique way of knocking.

"Aurelia. Of course come in and take a seat" he said as he gestured at the chair opposite him before looking back up at the ceiling. His voice was somewhat empty and emotionless.

"I am assuming you are wanting to talk about the inevitable approaching civil war"?

Upon approaching the desk, Aurelia noted how Duncan seemed distant. She wondered that perhaps it was the sole fact of what happened over the course of the noble's arrivals, the meeting, and now their sudden departure.

With a sigh, she sank into the chair adjacent to his desk, "Thank you. I'm sorry to have bothered you so late, but as you know, in times like these, there are few people we can turn to talk about matters that are important, and private." She glanced at him with a heavy, ominous gaze. He couldn't have guessed the reason for her visit any better, especially at such an hour.

"The meeting...went a bit rough, don't you think?" Aurelia inquired, as she crossed her ankles, and leaned forward in her seat. She looked every part of a troubled woman, and if one were to take careful note, they would spot the dark circles beneath her eyes, the case being a lack of sleep. "I wasn't expecting so many of the Houses to be divided. Then again, after witnessing what happened during Heylot's reign, I'm not all that surprised." She added quietly, fearing that indeed, another civil war would break out, and be deadlier than the Great Civil War of Formaroth, when Remonnet and Manshrew fought against one another, ending in Heylot's death.

"Well, they didn't hold back that much is for sure" Duncan said as he finally looked down. He paused for a moment as he quickly recalled what happened in the meeting, "I imagine that my family will be at war with house Manshrew before long. Afterall House Manshrew clearly thinks that they know what is best for Formaroth, and believes a De Reimer is far too untrustworthy to ruler the kingdom" Duncan said with a clear sound of spite in his voice.

"As for house Blackwell, gods only knows what they are planning. They are as unpredictable as they are reckless". Duncan looked sombrely at Aurelia

"This will be the third war I will have gone through, and I know that House De Reimer will do whatever is necessary to win. And what of you? How far would you go to ensure your survival?"

She let out a strained chuckle, at his comment about the noble's letting loose during the meeting. "You could say that." Aurelia continued to listen to Duncan, weighing heavily the words he said in her mind. When he mentioned what she would do, to ensure her own survival, her eyebrows raised at the unexpected nature of the question.

"I've never really put much thought into it. Under Heylot's rule, it was rather simple to keep my nose clean, and that was by saying nothing that contradicted him, or saying nothing at all. I've been protected, more than I would like to be, by living here in the keep. I've always had my needs handled, anything I've ever desired, has been granted. But now? My survival? I'm well aware that my status here in Nyhem, could potentially put me in danger." Aurelia paused in the midst of her speech, and drummed the tips of her fingers against the armchair.

"My survival is of my own accord. I am willing to ensure that I do not end up dead. If I must, when times are dire, I will flee. To where? I do not know. Perhaps to Raeldar, or to the Summer Isles. I don't have a place to call home, other than here. I know I am strong enough, magically speaking, to fend for myself. What of you, Duncan? What will you do? House Manshrew poses a great threat to removing you from the throne, and I fear that they will indeed start another war. With the power they have, they can sway the minds of anyone. Thankfully, you can do the same."

"As I said before. My family will do whatever is necessary to win. Because we have no other choice. We cannot go into hiding, or surrender or hope for mercy. The outcome of this war will decide if I lives or die, will decide whether my family will live on" Duncan paused for a moment before continuing, "Perhaps you may understand why I am somewhat withdrawn at the moment". A strong gush of wind came through the balcony extinguishing the candle on the desk engulfing the room in darkness. Duncan cursed as he tried to re-light the candle before he finally gave up.

"Would you mind?" He said to Aurelia as he gestured at the candle.

When the gust of wind buffeted through the room, banging the window door against the wall, Aurelia cringed, almost leaping out of her chair. She offered Duncan a half-smile, as if apologetic. Rising out of her chair, as he bid her, Aurelia cupped the candle in one hand, to prevent the window from blowing it out again, and whispered quietly to the blackened string.

"Duva."

Fire emerged from the tip of her finger, as she pulled it away, watching in confidence as the flame took hold. Striding over to the window leading out to the balcony, and shut it. She turned, and let her body rest against the window. With a glance outside, a storm grew on the distant horizon, dark clouds full of rain lingered, ominous of the news yet to come with the outcome of the new King, or even of the potential war about to break out across Formaroth. Returning to her seat wth an exhausted sigh, Aurelia focused her gaze once more upon Duncan, her green eyes flecked with gold danced in the candlelight.

"I know you will. I'm aware of what your family is capable of. I'm also aware, of how much good you have brought to Nyhem, despite what others have said. A Snake, or not, and to me you're not, you have been unjustly criticized by your fellow noble's. I want you to know Duncan, that I support you wholly in your claim for the throne. I have never known someone, such as yourself, to have the knowledge needed to rule a kingdom, and efficiently at that. We both lived through the reign of Heylot, and through King John, may Sisneas bless him, and keep him. I will remain by your side until the end."

While her words were grim, the words she spoke were heartfelt, and meaningful. She did not wish to see Duncan lose his head, especially to Andrew. It was still vivid in her mind, how the end of the Great Civil War of Formaroth had ended, with Heylot dead in the desert sands of Uzgob, by the hand of Andrew Manshrew, in revenge for the death of his beloved brother Rhys.

"What do you suppose our next course of action is?"

Duncan returned a smile to Aurelia. There were very few people Duncan trusted and he was happy that he could list Aurelia as one of them.

"I have sent a message to my siblings in Cawanor, they will arrive here in less than a fortnight. My Brother will only be staying here temporarily, my sister on the other hand will be replacing Edward as the new High Council's Economic advisor" Duncan paused for a moment before continuing "tell me, what do you know of my sister?" As much as Duncan loved his sister he couldn't deny that she was...difficult to deal with. Having her on the High Council would defiantly cause friction with the other members.

A chuckle escaped from her lips at the mention of his sister, she had heard many words spoken about Isabel De Reimer. She knew that Isabel was close to her in age, a beautiful woman by all means, but rather frugal with money. "I know she is the Economic Advisor for Cawanor, no? Asides from her being your sister, there isn't much I know. Why do you ask?"

Meeting his gaze, a rush of blood turned her cheeks to a rosy color. She had thought of Duncan to be a handsome man, regardless of his reputation, and still, after all of these years, looking him in the eye made her heart flutter. Aurelia had always considered love to be a matter for trivial affairs, and for women with nothing better to do than to feign over petty matters of the heart.

"Well she isn't exactly the easiest person to get along with, but her knowledge of finance and money management is unparalleled. I can think of no better person to replace Edward". As he looked up to face her, the look in her eye made him blush. Duncan looked away to hide his face. The look she had given him was a look he had never seen from her before, though strangely enough it didn't make him feel uncomfortable.

"Also I plan to appoint Cerlina Tuania as my new Head advisor. I have made a promise to house Tuania; They will support my claim to the throne if I appoint their oldest child as the new head advisor, that way they can hopefully clear their name of Evelyn's wrong doings. Though it may cost us a few friends to begin with, I have no doubt that it will pay off in the long run. She is a very capable and intelligence woman and has a lot of experience with ruling Tuania". Duncan said before he turned back round to face Aurelia though his blushing had not subsided; he could not deny that she was a beautiful woman.

"Anyone would be better than Edward, that much I believe we agree on. What better person to serve as the new economic advisor than your own sister, bonds of trust with family are harder to break. I have no doubt you made a choice most wise." With silent eyes, she watched as Duncan turned away from her in his chair. His behavior seemed odd, perhaps he had caught her staring at him? She averted her gaze when he turned back around. Her slender, black brows rose in a questioning matter at the mention of Duncan choosing Cerlina Tuania to replace him. Those speckled green-gold eyes wandered back to look him in the eye once more. A gentle rain had begun to fall, and the tiny drops that fell against the window panes comforted, and soothed her nerves. The arrival, and now departure of all the House noble's, left her feeling on-edge, and overly tense.

"You seek to strengthen their ties with House De Reimer, for your seat to the throne? I would have hoped, that you had found a better candidate for the new Head Advisor. However, that is not my place to say. Perhaps, Jykher willing, that Cerlina will not follow in the footsteps of her predecessor, Evelyn. I remember the pain that wretched woman caused you. I will not impede upon any of your decisions, as to whom you desire to elect to these new positions, for you know I trust you more than anyone else here. After all we have been through, especially under the reign of Heylot, I feel that I know you best of all. I would go so far to say, that you are perhaps, my only friend." Her voice faltered at the last sentence, as her throat tightened in recollection of the memories, all the fears she had felt, evaporated when she met Duncan. Whether he realized it or not, there was no one else she trusted to confide in.

"Like I said she seems like a very capable woman and I have no doubt that she will be a very valuable member of High council. Given her own personal hatred for her aunt I highly doubt she will follow her down the same path." Duncan's face changed to that of discontent when Aurelia mentioned Evelyn. Whenever anyone mentioned her name Duncan could not help but remember what she had done to both him and those he had cared about.

"I thank you Aurelia, I too consider you a friend, perhaps even more" As Duncan reached for a goblet of water on his desk he froze once he realised what he had said; he had been so focused on reflecting on the past he hadn't been paying much attention to what he was saying.

"I mean...um..." He stammered.

The dark shadow that travelled across Duncan's face did not surprise Aurelia, instead she recognized it immediately as pure hatred for the woman, she knew how much pain Evelyn Tuania had caused Duncan, and part of her regretted even mentioning her name in front of him. "Well, since she has such deeply rooted hatred towards her aunt... It would be wise, nonetheless, to keep an eye on her, and the company she keeps. However, I will not press the matter further."

When she heard his words, her eyes locked upon his, with a look on her face, that read of confusion. He thought of her more than a friend? What did that mean? Did he love her? No, those weren't the words he said. Aurelia could feel the heat return to her face the more she thought of it, as her brows knitted together in further contemplation. Her head tipped to the side, and a small smile appeared on her lips.

"I beg your pardon? More than friends? Then what do you consider our friendship to be, if we are more than friends, my dear Duncan?" She herself, did not know how to process the very words that left his lips moments before. The petrified look upon his face, told her that he too, had caught himself. Even as he stammered to collect himself, Aurelia let out a small chuckle.

"I suppose it is only natural, for you to share feelings for me, more than being just your friend. I will warn you Duncan, I have never loved anyone before. So excuse me if I come across as confused, I guess I wouldn't know if anyone loved me, even if someone were to smack me in the face with a dead fish." She hoped that she hadn't made the situation worse, or at least made him feel uncomfortable even further. Suddenly, Aurelia arose from her chair, and gazed down upon him.

"If you have nothing left to say, or discuss other important matters, perhaps I should take my leave?"

Suddenly the door to the drunken merchant swung open, and two heavily armed men marched in, followed by Claus Rotstein.

-"Meeting!" He told with a firm unexpectedly loud penetrating voice, to the civilians in the bar it looked like pure reflex took over the actions of the Steel fist mercs present as they prepared a large table and gathered some extra stools and another table to make a large table, needless to say the good mood that had been going on was quickly silenced and turned into confusion.

Claus sat down in the short end of the hastily gathered together grand table and crossed his feet atop the surface in a very laid back seat.
-"What is this? The place is in terrible shape, JONES!!!" Claus told in his commanding voice, one of the men responding with standing in attention Claus kept on.
-"Get the sorry owner of this place to fix it up." Then he tossed a gold piece to him and watched him leave.

Two boys and a girl started mopping the floors while the lieutenants of the Steel fist were seated, a bunch of the other mercs were surrounding the affair.
Some of the civilians left but many kept their seats and curiously listened.
-"Alright, a few of you already know this but i want it widely known in the fist." Claus said while he unpacked a wine bottle and a letter.
-"As you know i've been present at the nobles meetings in the keep, while i was not part of the discussion per se, i made sure i've got the general idea of the whole ordeal."
As Claus uncorked the bottle one of the men sitting close to him asked.
-"Is that Orog wine?"
-"Yeah. A.... friend of mine... suggested it." Claus responded.
-"Isn't that terribly expensive?" Another countered.
-"Well i didn't get the most expensive bottle now did i, i'm not an idiot." Claus voiced angrily with that smug smile of his. He kept on.
-"And besides, do shut up, not everyone gets to drink this kind of nice stuff."

Cups were handed around the table and the nice wine was poured up.
-"Right, i've got a letter from our recent employer mr Snake, and he found our job well done and paid us without fuzz. Guess this serpent got more funds than the ones we met walking home in Glarmion." The joke was met with a small shuckle, and a shudder heard from the rear. Followed by a laugh or two. Claus threw the letter to the center of the table.
-"He said in this letter that he'd like to hire us some more in the future, so it's nice to get some recognition for ones work, so good job there men." Claus ended the sentence with raising his cup in a toast and everyone drank.

-"Hm, not bad. Anyway... we could simply go with the first offer we get, but from what i heard in the meeting, there is some serious tension in the ruling of Formaroth, if they ain't careful there's probably gonna be another war. Knowing how the nobility often work, i'd say it's gonna be a war, only question is how big." Claus informed while seating himself in a more ordinary manner. There was a gasp heard from one of the tables.

-"In the letter he mentions this war minister that's coming soon, so i'll be having a chat with him to try to figure him out a bit more. In the meantime i'd assume the rats haven't shit in the grain and as such not jump on the first opportunity that presents itself." Claus kept on, his lieutenants were listening carefully.

-"Now, when the news have been taken care of, any questions? Or any problems i've forgot to take care of or that have materialized when i was not looking?" Claus asked.
-"Well, there is the problem with lodging for my men." The heavily bearded Roogel spoke.
-"Aw no, the owner haven't forgiven your men for that one yet? Any ideas?" Claus was annoyed with the situation.
-"Not really, only ideas so far is to rough him up or cough up the sum he wanted." Roogel shook his head.
-"Well, i'd say we do both. After all there probably shouldn't have been a table dancing contest, but the floors weren't properly kept either. So we'll give him a third of his offer, if he isn't happy, try to convince him. Not too rough though." Claus grudgingly decided.

The rest of the meeting was mostly other less important problems in the company, and people wanting a clarification on the situation. Claus had bought a round of ales for the Steel fist present. During the meeting Claus was approached by one of his men, a tall fellow.
-"Ey boss, you should hear this guy when meeting is done. Great at stories, even uses magics for show." Claus turned to the man and asked.
-"I see, so is he here? How do i recognize him?"
-"Older guy, blue jacket, one of those fellows who looks to happy for their own good though. Last i saw of him he was seated there in the corner." The man described and pointed to a table, both he and Claus looked over there to check.

The table was occupied by two jolly men, both drinking a tankard of what was presumably beer.
There was however a distinct lack of elderly men with blue jackets.

-"Trooper... i can't help but notice a distinct lack of wizards at that table." Claus commented with a genuinely unimpressed look upon his face while giving his man a glance. A shrug was the troopers response.
-"Pity... would have loved a good story. Now, let's get a party going ey!!!" The second half of the sentence Claus boomed out so all in the tavern could hear, and the response was a massive cheer from his mercenaries.

“Urg look at them all” Isabel said to Ulf as she looked reluctantly out of her carriage window. Isabel had just arrived in Nyhem and had decided to go on ahead of her brother so as to get the keep as quickly as possible. Unfortunately for her the quickest route to the keep required travelling through the slums of Nyhem. The slums were a mess of derelict buildings and narrow streets. A single wide road had been carved straight through the middle of the slum so that rich could pass through it in their carriages and avoid the risk of being robbed. Ulf, her bodyguard followed her glare and smirked. Ulf was a monstrously large man who was over two meters high and was only barely able to fit inside the carriage. He was bald with a sprawling mess of a beard. Outside the carriage were some slum children, pleading for money and covered in dirt.

“These children should go and do something with their petty lives instead of asking us civilized people for money” Isabel said. Ulf nodded like he did to all of his mistress’s complaints.

“Yeah, surely there is some road kill or dead rats they can feed off” Ulf said as he laughed cruelly. Isabel hated being in the same area as common people. Though it was hardly a surprise considering she despised nearly everyone with the exception of herself, her brothers and Ulf. For her the carriage walls were not a strong enough separation between her and the commoners outside. The dark little box was turning into a sauna and with her crushing corset it was becoming difficult to breathe, but she still found it preferable to opening a window and having the smell of the slum fill the carriage. A man’s shouting caught her attention as she glared out of the carriage.

“The snake’s siblings have finally arrived” he shouted “the traitors have all decided to meet in one place, Leplo have mercy” A few other people in the street laughed at his jeering while Isabel’s face filled with rage. Like her brothers she did not take well to her family name being insulted.

“Stop the carriage” she shouted as the carriage came to a sudden halt “Ulf get out and make them pay for their insolence” she shrieked. Ulf nodded as he existed the carriage with a sadistic smile on his face; it had been a while since he had last satisfied his bloodlust. As soon as Ulf had marched out the carriage the jeering man soon realised his mistake. Before he could attempt to run away Ulf had already grabbed him by the neck with such a force that it choked him. The children whom had been begging earlier had run away in terror while everyone else simply looked on in shock. Ulf looked gleefully at his victim as slowly unsheathed his great sword with his free hand.

“ULF STAND DOWN” The voice spoke with such authority and forcefulness that it was enough to cause Ulf to snap out of his bloodlust state and drop the man he was holding. Isabel looked out of her carriage to see who dared to defy her orders only to have her anger quelled by the sight of her brother, Patrick De Reimer. Patrick had decided it would be best that he caught up with his sister in case she did anything rash. Afterall it wouldn’t be the first time she had acted out of anger against the common people, and unlike in Cawaport, it would be near impossible to cover up the incident here in Nyhem. Considering the situation, it turned out that he was right in his judgement. He rode a black horse with several of his bodyguards riding beside him, among them was his personal bodyguard Evennis. Patrick rode up beside Isabel’s carriage gleaming in his battle armour.

“Brother that man insulted the De Reimer name. He…” Isabel protested

“Enough” Said Patrick, though he didn’t raise his voice, there was enough authority in it to silence his sister. “We will discuss this matter further when we reach the keep”. With that, Isabel paused for a moment before nodding at Ulf, signalling him to come back to the carriage to which Ulf begrudgingly obeyed. Once Isabel’s carriage had started to move Patrick signalled for his troops to move on with him keeping closely behind the carriage. As Patrick looked behind him he noticed that the man who had been strangled by Ulf had finally stood up again. The man staggered off into one of the slums side streets grasping his throat, it would be unlikely that he would be able to speak again any time soon.

“What were you thinking!?” Duncan shouted “our reputation here in Nyhem is bad enough without you going around killing its citizens”. Duncan was standing in the council chambers along with both his siblings. All but three of the chairs had been removed from the room and a large map of Formaroth lay on the council table.

“He insulted our family name, was I just supposed to let the filth get away with it” Isabel snapped back “If they don’t fear us then the people of this city will believe they can walk right over us”.

“Enough” Patrick bellowed, before almost immediately lowering his voice “Calm yourself Duncan. The man was a slum dweller, his words are meaningless and nobody of importance will listen to him. Besides we have more pressing matters to attend to”. He finished as he looked over to the map on the table.

“Agreed” Duncan said “We are at war and bickering amongst ourselves is the last thing we should be doing”. The three siblings all moved over to the table as they crowded around the map. Duncan was the first to speak.

“As it stands at the moment House Manshrew and its allies has declared Andrew as the new king of Formaroth. They have denounced my claim and are now at war with The Imperial Concord. They are the most immediate threat. I would recommend sending troops to reinforce Orog, considering it borders house Humber and is completely cut off from the rest of The Imperial Concord”. Duncan explained as he pointed to Orog on the map.

“Indeed” Patrick replied “Which is precisely why I plan to remove the entire military force from Orog”. Both Duncan and Isabel looked at each other with shock before turning to face Patrick.

“But why”!? Isabel exclaimed “Why would you sacrifice an entire kingdom to house Manshrew?”

“Because Orog will fall regardless of what we do” Patrick continued “Even if we were to send reinforcements I do not trust house Greensworth to lead them to victory. Instead we will divert the forces of House Greensworth to invade Ralda. House Anjervine will invade from west while Greensworth will land in Sypius and invade from the east. House Mazeltof will be unable to fight a war on two fronts and will succumb to the invasion. Furthermore I plan to reinforce Cawanor and Telmarion with our forces in Sypius”. Once again Duncan and Isabel looked at Patrick with confusion.

“But that would leave Syipus undefended” Duncan said.

“Not quite” Patrick said “Unless if one of the kingdoms bordering Sypius falls the enemy can only invade from the sea. The Imperial Concord’s fleet will patrol the coast of Sypius and will intercept any ships that attempt to land troops in Sypius. The spies we have placed in the various kingdoms should give us advanced warning should anyone attempt a naval attack giving us plenty of time to prepare”. Duncan was impressed. The plan that Patrick had created was somewhat risky but if executed correctly would be devastating for the enemy.

“There are still two matters that need our attention” Duncan said “The first being house Greensworth; they will not be happy that they have to abandon their lands. The second is The Soldier's Entente. Though they may have declared themselves neutral in this war, they are a threat that we cannot ignore”. Patricks face remained as calm and as confident as it had before.

“I’m sure you will find some way to appease house Greensworth. Afterall appealing to nobles is your speciality. As for The Soldier's Entente, I have already formulated a plan to use them to our advantage” Patrick said smugly.

AR 490 ~ Two years before the end of the war, The Great Civil War of Formaroth, Aurelia Vyncetta joins the Head Council based in Nyhem.

The times were wrought with tragedy, and grief. Many civilians had become casualties during the war so far, even more disturbing, mages in Nyhem, the capital city of all Formaroth, were burned at the stake for treasonous activities. Such was the day, that Aurelia had arrived at the heart of the empire. She had landed moments before in the docks of Nyhem, her face turned out to gaze out the pane-less window. Sailing did not suit her hardy constitution, and she still felt green in the face, weak in the knees, with her palms sweating. As the carriage ride from the docks progressed towards Miserth Keep, the wooden carriage rolled into the Bazaar, as she would soon come to know it. There, centered for all to see in the midst of the plaza, stood three erected poles, with fires burning low. Three charred corpses hung limp, more horrifying, she could see their faces, with their mouths twisted in silent screams; even the smell of burnt flesh floated through the carriage. She quickly covered her nose as bile rose in her throat, threatening to lose her morning breakfast of thin gruel, biscuits, and a mugful of spiced mead to calm her nerves from the sailing ship. Even though she had left for the Summer Isles all those years ago, twelve years to date, when she was just a little girl at the wee age of eight, she had sailed across the seas many times, from the Ice Sea on the forested shores of Raeldar, to the Inan Sea, and onwards to the Irman Sea where the Isles were located. Twelve years had passed since she had left the Mage’s Circle, and now, she had set forth on an adventure of unprecedented expectations. High Magister Ascelina, and Rolandus confronted Aurelia when she completed the last of her exams to determine what she would like to do with herself afterwards. She had protested against being sent away from the safety of the Circle, and pleaded with them to let her continue her studies.

However, Ascelina would not hear of it, she informed her, that King Heylot recently executed his previous High Magister on grounds of treason, and had requested a replacement. She kindly explained to Aurelia, that she was the best one to replace his magister, and while Aurelia could only believe in horror that she would certainly die under his reign, she reluctantly agreed to go. Of course, the journey across the Irman Sea took the better part of a month-and-a-half to complete. Throughout the voyage, she leafed through the papers that Rolandus had given her, the contents of the papers regarded to how she was to conduct herself as a representative of the Mage’s Circle, and how to act accordingly as a High Magister; she was to bow or curtsy to everyone of a higher rank than her, address Heylot, as Great King Heylot like he desired (whilst his nickname as The Mad King or Heylot the Mad was well used throughout Formaroth amongst those keen to speak out against him, she had been advised to avoid calling him that to his face), not to speak out of turn, and speak when spoken to, and to do as she was told were a short list of the numerous items written in the papers. It had taken little time for her to memorize the letters inked in black, so when she landed, all she could think of was what not to do wrong. One of the page-boys of the court had arrived at the docks to greet Aurelia, and provided little companionship on the ride to the Keep. She tore her gaze away as the last visuals of the charred bodies disappeared from view, and focused on her companion. The boy was young, perhaps no older than thirteen or fourteen at best, he had a mop of mahogany-brown curls, where doe-brown eyes peered out at the world under thick lashes. She had learned his name, Mikael. He met her gaze, and shrugged half-heartedly at the sight.

“What happened to them?” Aurelia asked, rather hesistant, unsure if she were allowed to ask things of that nature from a page boy.

“Heylot says they were traitors, mages they were, so he sentenced them to the stake.” His words proved that he knew little else as to why the king felt they were traitors, and she did not wish to press him for more answers, for fear of suffering the same fate.

The carriage-ride to the Keep abruptly ended as it came to a halt outside the drawbridge. Mikael popped out of the carriage with a spring in his step, and opened the door for Aurelia with a friendly smile on his face. Her gaze drifted across the drawbridge where she spotted an elegantly dressed woman waiting for her on the other side, in front of the Keep’s massive doors.

“Who is she?” She whispered as she climbed out of the carriage.

“That is Evelyn Tuaina, Head Advisor of the High Council.” Mikael remarked, and none too happily at that. In fact, his cheery smile that he bore for her, had vanished upon the sight of the woman across the bridge. She shared in his somber attitude, gathered about her a stoic stance as she followed Mikael across the wooden drawbridge.

When they neared, Aurelia could tell that Evelyn was indeed a beautiful woman, however, despite her evident beauty, she certainly did appear just as cold as Aurelia attempted to feel. In a black velvet gown, trimmed in black lace, and covered in gold jewelry with brilliant diamonds about her throat, and ears, she arched a thin, black eyebrow at Aurelia, as if scrutinizing her appearance in her navy-blue mages robes, with a matching dress, and white kirtle.

“Aurelia Vyncetta?” Evelyn asked. Upon addressing her, she bowed deeply to her, just like the letters had instructed.

“Head Councilor Evelyn Tuania, it is a pleasure to meet you. I am Aurelia Vyncetta, I am the new High Magister that Great King Heylot has asked for.” She rose from her bow, and stared into the eyes of the woman before her. Evelyn’s lip twitched, for what, she could not tell.

“Yes… That is correct. Come with me, I shall show you to your chambers, and then you shall meet King Heylot. He will tell you what is to be expected of you then.” With a swish of her black dress, Evelyn turned on the point of her heel, and sashayed into the keep.

In the Presence of Great King Heylot

The sheer beauty of Miserth Keep astounded her. Not only the size of the keep impressed her, but she was surprised even more so at its decadence. It was commonly known throughout Formaroth that Heylot had placed the empire into a great debt, now that she had arrived, she could say on a first-hand account, where all the money was going to. Every corridor in the keep bore lavish tapestries, the finest animal furs, painted windows, thick carpeted rugs upon which to walk, and candelabras made of pure gold. Her chambers that had been provided were of lesser comparison to the beauty of the keep; she had an armoire for her clothes, a desk, a bookcase, a shelf, a hearth, a tub for bathing, and a bed with a feather down mattress. It was a plain room, but one that she was grateful for nonetheless.

A sharp rapt at the door drew her away, and she discovered that Mikael had come to fetch her. Evelyn had informed her that she would meet Heylot at a banquet, and to dress accordingly, even more so, Heylot’s personal seamstress had come to attend to her, and have a dress for her soon. That held true, as by the time Mikael had come, she wore a lavish green gown with golden thread embroidered around her wrists, and along hem of the dress. The seamstress provided her with a pair of green silk slippers, along with a pendant with a black pearl. Having everything given to her unexpectedly unnerved her greatly. She suppressed the urge to reject the fineries given to her, but she remembered Rolandus had written, accept everything given to you, lest it be viewed as an insult. She noticed that by the way Mikael’s cheeks colored deeply when she opened the door, that she was dressed acceptably, or in this case, pleasing to the eye. Together, Mikael and Aurelia headed for the dining hall, and as he held open the door for her, she tripped over the hem of her gown in wonder, and amazement at the luxurious display of food, and the nobles before her. Heads swiveled to see who had come to join them, and when she stepped into the room meekly, her face burning bright with crimson, Mikael guided her towards her seat at the dining table. There were twenty wooden seats placed accordingly around the polished table, and from one end to the other, there were extravagant platters, dishes, and baskets arranged beautifully. It was there, seated at the head of the table, did she see Heylot himself. The flush of her cheeks drained away, as her eyes met his. Upon a head of black hair that fell to his shoulders, sat a heavy golden crown, and underneath thick, black brows, eyes darker still were rimmed red; from what she could not say. He rose abruptly from his chair, a strange, twisted grin appeared on his lips as he leaned forward with his hands planted firmly before him.

“Ah… You must be Aurelia Vyncetta. Evelyn has told me that you have arrived as scheduled. Please, take a seat.” He gestured towards an empty chair, the only chair left unoccupied. She managed a quick, deep bow, before hurrying to her seat. “I am pleased you could join us today, as on this day, it marks an important day in history. Do you know what day is today?” Heylot asked, a sly smirk creeping onto his face as he returned to his seat as well. She felt anxious under his piercing, black gaze.

“I am afraid not, your Majesty. What day is today?” Her voice trembled as she spoke, unsure if she was giving the proper answer.

“Today, is the day, that the Church of Klebrithy held its day of burning during the early eras of when my family came to power. The Burning of Mages, as it is known.” He said as his eyes narrowed dangerously, holding her gaze solid. Her mouth became inexplicably dry under his stern stare, while her heartbeat quickened, it pounded fiercely behind her ribs, and she thought she would faint. “Of course I had to commemorate this day, so I apologize for the horrible smell you must have encountered on the way here. I trust that you won’t suffer the same fate as theirs.” With that, he settled into his chair, and carried on light-hearted conversations with those seated next to him. Fortunately, Aurelia was seated far enough away from him not to warrant his attention further. She followed the cues of those around her as they began to fill their silver plates full of food. Next to her, a tall, lanky man glanced at her occasionally. She noticed his pallid skin, and his shoulder-length brown hair; she would discover at the end of the dinner, that this man was none other than Duncan De Reimer, her future friend, and ally under the tyrant king.

Palace throne room

It had been a few weeks since Andrew had returned from Nyhem. He was glad to be back in home with the company of his friends and family. But the war in Formaroth had begun, even though Andrew didn't want to have to fight another war he knew it was his responsibility to defend his homeland and make his dream of a united Formaroth a reality. Andrew was in the throne room. The throne room was made entirely out of sandstone and the throne was made out of an exotic palm tree which went extinct one hundred years ago. Andrew was sat on his throne; in front of him was a palm wood table with the map of Formaroth marked with the new alliances forged after the meetings. Either side of him stood both his friends and trusted advisors Alun DeGrande and George LeWest.

"So where do we start?" said Andrew.

"Well my lord the first thing would be to strengthen the weak spots in our borders in case the enemy would dare attack Uzgob." Replied Alun. Andrew looked at the map and analysed it carefully, he could see three weaknesses that the imperial concord could exploit.

"Ok first should deploy a small number of soldiers to the mountain pass that leads from Rathikun to Uzgob, then send a larger number towards the border that divides us to upper Glarmion, finally we have where the river meets the sea, if the enemy were able to use this then they would have no problem sailing up towards the city." Said Andrew.

"I will attend to the mountain pass and the Glarmion border at once Andrew." replied Alun.

"Thank you Alun I know you'll do your best for me and all of Uzgob" said Andrew.

"Just like old times." said Alun as a remark toward the civil war towards the Remonnets.

"Just like old times." replied Andrew with the addition of a smile.

"George what is the status of Fort Scarab if the fort falls then the river is completely open to the enemy."

"Well since the civil war we have improved its fortifications, we've installed trebuchets that can easily destroy your average ship, we have also installed watch out towers so we can see any armada for miles meaning we can easily prepare if they launch an attack. We have also increased the amount of ships stationed at the fort so if we have to fight we'll be ready." said George feeling proud of what he had accomplished over the time.

"That's amazing, thank you George it's good to know that I have reliable friends as my advisors who care about Uzgob as much as I do. If we do not survive this war I want you to know that it is an honour and a privilege to be your friend." As Andrew said this he put his fist to his chest and bowed to both men as this happened both Alun and George did the same.

"Well it's an honour to be serving under such a lord that both protects and cares so much for his land and its people". Replied Alun.

"Now is there anything else I should know before we conclude this meeting?" said Andrew.

"Yes my lord" replied Alun. "Our spies have reported that Imperial forces are withdrawing from Orog."

"This is most likely to reinforce their borders." replied George "Would you like to act on this my Lord?"

"Yes." replied Andrew "I will send a letter to House Greensworth sympathising with them and offering them protection which the De Reimers so easily left them to be wiped out in exchange for joining us in our cause and a chance to get revenge on the De Reimers themselves."

"Very good my lord" replied Alun "Is that all?" "Yes that is all, thank you gentleman." Both George and Alun went on their way and Andrew headed to his chambers to gain some solace.

Training – Palace Courtyard
It was early afternoon and Andrew had taken some time off to practice with his niece Elizabeth. They were both in the training field sparring with each other using wooden swords. Andrew wanted to see that Elizabeth's training didn't go to waste. "Very good Elizabeth. But your legwork still needs some work." said Andrew.

"I don't see why we can't use real swords." said Elizabeth

"Remember the last time we used real swords." said Andrew who pointed to the scar on Elizabeth's cheek. "Any enemy smart enough to see that flaw could knock you down and then it would be over."

"My legwork is just fine Uncle" said Elizabeth.

"Very well then. Again!" yelled Andrew and the pair sparred again. Andrew could tell that Elizabeth was a bit too confident in her abilities with a sword. It was time to prove her wrong. He could see the same flaw in her legwork so using his sword he knocked Elizabeth to the ground. As Elizabeth scrambled for her sword, Andrew had his pointed at her. "Told you." he said as he offered his hand to Elizabeth in which she accepted. "Always hone your skills Elizabeth and maybe someday you'll be able to give both me and Alun a challenge."
"Thank you Uncle." said Elizabeth as she did this she gave Andrew a hug.

Then suddenly a voice called out "Uncle Andrew!" Both Andrew and Elizabeth turned their heads to see Mary and Lucy approaching them. Mary was running straight to them while Lucy quickly walked behind her. Once both girls reached him, Andrew gave both of them a hug. "Hey you two. Did you come from your lessons."

"Yeah" said Mary "Mr DeGrande and Mr LeWest were teaching us the history of Uzgob."

"Interesting" said Andrew "So; name me the house that took control of Uzgob after the great purge?" Both Lucy and Mary thought hard on this question but ultimately Lucy had found an answer. "House Ennis, they were the ones to later introduce the election system so that corruption could not sit on the throne again. “Very good Lucy" said Andrew who was very surprised with how quick Lucy answered the question. "So who's up for some dinner then?"

"ME!" exclaimed all three girls as they raised their arms. Andrew smiled and all of them headed to the castle kitchens to make their favourite meal.

The Dream
490 A.R – Execution of Rhys Manshrew
It was raining in Nyhem and Andrew was stood amongst the crowd wearing a black shroud so as not to draw attention to himself, especially at this moment. Andrew made his way through the crowd until he could see the execution stand which was surrounded by numerous guards. On top of the stand stood Duncan De Reimer 'The Snake', Aurelia King Heylot's mage, King Heylot himself, the executioner and more importantly his brother Rhys who was so bloodied and bruised that he was barely recognisable who was shackled. Heylot spoke to the crowd

"My loyal citizens as your King I must tell you that we have been betrayed." He then pointed to Rhys. "This man tried to assassinate me under the guise of being an honourable guess in my castle. This man who I once called an ally and most importantly a friend has betrayed me and therefore all of Formaroth." As the crowd cheered, Andrew from amongst the crowd shouted "He's lying!" luckily no one heard him over the noise of the cheering crowd. Heylot spoke again "The penalty for such a heinous crime like this is... death!"

The crowd cheered once again but Andrew couldn't believe what was happening and that no one was objecting to this. As Rhys knelt down readying himself for his demise he saw Andrew in the crowd but making sure he did not give him away for he would be surely killed as well. Andrew was ready to fight he was not afraid to die today knowing that he tried to save his brother but as he was ready to draw his sword he saw Rhys give a slight shake of his head telling him not to do it. Andrew saw this and put his sword away with a tear leaving his eye, luckily the crowd was too transfixed on the execution to have seen the sword. As Rhys laid his head on the block his final thoughts were those of his family back in Uzgob and how he would never see his daughters grow up. Andrew felt helpless, his anger for Heylot grew and he vowed that he would kill the tyrant king himself. As the executioner's blade rose Andrew wished he could stop this but Rhys' death would become a way to show Heylot's true colours and then the blade fell. Andrew jolted from his sleep his brother’s death still haunted him after so many years. The best Andrew could do was that his brother's death was not in vain as it was the spark that destroyed Heylot's rule and made the House of Manshrew a hero name. As he thought of this Andrew went back to sleep.

The streets of Nyhem were bustling with life; night had fallen and the roads were packed with people who had decided to finish their hard days work by getting drunk at the nearest tavern. Alenius pushed her way through the drunken crowd as she made her way to the tavern that Claus had been staying in. As Alenius made her way into the tavern she knew immediately that finding Claus would be problematic, the tavern was completely filled with people, almost half of which were steel fist mercenaries. Trying to find Claus in here would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. As she forced her way towards the bar she called out to the bartender.
"Barkeep" She shouted, her many years as a general had trained her voice to be heard even over the most deafening noise. The bartender turned to face her. He was red in the face and the crowded pub was clearly keeping him busy. Still he knew better than to ignore a Cawanor solider. Soldiers of Cawanor always demanded respect, and those who didn't show it tended to regret it.

"Yes. What do you want"? He exclaimed

"I'm looking for a man called Claus Rotstein" She shouted "Do you know where he is"?

"He should be here milady..." The barman yelled in response, he paused while he looked over the patrons in his establishment.
"Can't see 'im now milady, used to sit o'er there tho'" He pointed with a nod. Alenius was about to go check when two readily 'refreshed' steel fist men blocked her path.

"What have we got here, nice girl with nice gear!" One of the two said, the other was chuckling and Alenius noticed another one trying to encircle her.
The 'gear' they were referring to probably not focused on her actual equipment. A whistle from the one who had encircled her with a snide comment of her bosom confirmed their plans.
Alenius just shook her head and was about to act when a sharp penetrating voice was heard from one of the stalls.

"Morgan, is that how we treat a lady?" Claus was seen with his feet on top of a table along with several of his men, one was knocked out from the evenings activities.
The three who had hindered Alenius suddenly froze and the one who had spoken made a full 180 and sprang into attention.
"Sir!... i dunno sir, we just wanted... to ask her to have some fun later...." Alenius could now see Claus sitting with a cup and a piece of bread and shaking his head.

"I'd suggest you wait with that for later." He glanced on each of the men whom in turn fled into the crowd.
"As for you miss, have a seat." He pointed at the opposite side of his stall with his bread, made a flick of the head to his men who dragged away the slumbering one. The stall was quickly emptied, but Alenius saw that one of Claus's closest stood put next to Claus with his arms crossed.
Claus smiled to Alenius and motioned with the bread again.
"Got some Orog wine." His smile was closing on the realm of disturbing.

Alenius shook her head at Claus's offer of wine, she found his smile somewhat unsettling. Though it was good that he had stepped in when he did, another second and she may have punched Morgan's teeth out. "Not while I still have work to do I'm afraid" She said. She decided to remain standing, on any normal occasion she would of considered sitting down next to Claus, and may of even taken him up on his offer to drink with him. However she could not delay, she was under orders from Patrick De Reimer to bring Claus back to him as soon as possible, and Patrick was a man who did not like being kept waiting. "I have been sent to bring you back to the keep as soon as possible. Patrick De Reimer wishes to speak to you"

"My dear, this is the second time you have been tasked to take me to the keep. And last time wasn't really an event i'd like to recall." Claus stated bluntly.
"Let's do it like this. I'd claim you owe me one since last time." Claus was looking very untrustworthy just there, but he kept on.

"You sit down, and have a nice... small... cup of wine, we chat for a couple of minutes and then i join you for a walk to the keep. No need to hurry, unless you brought that 'lovely' guard that helped me get to the keep last time." He took his feet down from the table, took a cup standing beside him and poured a small serving of wine in it and then offered it to Alenius. With one of his trademark smirks on his lips.

"I think the keep and mr De-Reimer will still be there even after a small chat and some wine? Hm?" Claus even uses the puppy eye technique, truly a sly negotiator.

Alenius gave Claus a look of disgust. She would rather return to Patrick empty handed then give in to Claus's request. She was a proud woman and would not accept his proposal...at least not in front of everyone, and certainly not while he was drunk.
"I owe you nothing sir, and I assure you that Patrick De Reimer does not appreciate being kept waiting" She snapped. Claus sighed in disappointment as he gulped down the wine from both cups.

"Too bad" He said begrudgingly. As he stood up he signaled to two of his most trusted men so as to escort him to the keep. He then followed Alenius out of the tavern and into the busy streets of Nyhem.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Patrick had not left the The Council Chambers since his discussion with his siblings. Even now he gazed over the maps and scrolls that sprawled across the table. Half the candles had already burnt out and the room had become dark in their absence. A knock on the door broke Patrick's focus as he slowly looked up towards the door.
"Who is it" Patrick demanded
"Duncan's bodyguard Alenius" replied the voice from outside "I have brought the mercenary captain you have requested"
"Very well then, send him in" barked Patrick. It was time to find out what type of man this Claus was.

Claus was shown into the rather nice council chambers, his two men stayed outside, inside he saw a man he did not recognize.
He then just remembered that it was not Duncan De Reimer who had sent for him, but a Patrick. This man was probably Patrick De Reimer.

For a few seconds Claus stood and watched the man in the seat. A rather grim man it seemed, looking even more so since most of the candles had burnt out and left the stern faced man covered mostly in darkness behind the table covered in maps and scrolls.
Claus didn't really know what to do, normally if one invited someone one usually welcomes the guest and introduces oneself, but not this man.

He had sat down in a bit more relaxed position, and Claus figured the man was testing him.
So Claus decided to sit down leaning back heavily on the chair and clasped his hands over his heart.

"Usually it's common courtesy to introduce oneself when you have guests. But perhaps that is not custom in Cawanor. Or perhaps the maps have insulted you in some way and now you are in a terrible mood. Should I leave? Or have someone defeat the maps in chivalric combat to restore your honor?" Claus ended this sentence in one of his trademark smirks. His teeth gleaming slightly in the dim candlelight.

Like most mercenary captains he was as sharp with his tongue as he was with his sword. Patrick did not change his expression and seemingly ignored Claus's comment
"So you are the leader of the steel fist company, do have a drink" Patrick said bluntly and he gestured towards a jug of wine on the table "I have been told that you have been looking for a new employer. I have called you hear to 'persuade' you to fight on the side of the Imperial Concord. I can guarantee I will make it worth your while. Tell me what do your normal employers pay you for your services"?

Claus helped himself to the jug of whine, sniffed the content and poured some for himself in a nearby cup.
"The imperial concord, now that's a fancy title." Claus took a sip of the wine. Then he kept on.
"It is true that i will be needing a new employer rather soon, the Steel fist doesn't pay its salaries from nothing, even if we aren't exactly short on funds it is prudent to always be in some sort of employment." He took another sip, swirled the wine in the cup and let the taste properly fill his mouth.
"This wine isn't too bad, not as good as Orog wine, but not bad." Claus lost his train of thought slightly, but made a quicker than usual recovery.
"Thing is, the times are rather... let's say interesting, and thus i can't just jump on just about any job opportunity. After all, i wouldn't want to be on the losing side in a war, even if that probably isn't the case with working for the concord." Claus looked into his cup which he rotated to swirl the wine inside, he looked troubled.

"Usual pay for the fist is normally 50 gold per month of service. The reason for the higher fee being our excellent quality of course. But i'd say that the times call for a bit more. Perhaps thirty percent more?" Claus raised his eyebrows at the last statement, making a pouting face while watching Patrick. Shifting his legs to put them crossed on the table in his usual laid back pose.

"I see" said Patrick "You need to make sure that the benefits of joining up with the Imperial Concord outweighs the negatives of potentially ending up on the losing side. I cannot blame you it is a logical view to have" Patrick paused and gave Claus a hard stare "So I will remove the doubt for you. Not only will I pay thirty percent more, I will pay double your normal rate. As you know house De Reimer is the richest kingdom in Formaroth, so whatever the enemy may offer you I will always be able to beat it. Not only can I offer you gold, but I can offer you something far more valuable: I can offer you a legacy. House Tunaia is stuck between both the 'Manshrew Alliance' and 'The Soldiers Entente', unfortunately for them they do not have much in the way of competent military leaders. That is where you come in, I have been learning much about you, your military prowess is something to behold. I will give you a additional force of 7500 mercenaries to reinforce Telmarion. With that you will lead the forces of Tuania against our enemies and create a legacy for both you and your mercenary company.

Claus emptied his cup with a pair of gulps followed by a heavy almost growling exhale and then poured another one at these news.
"Now we're talking business." Claus was grinning now but trying to contain it, although without any luck.

"With rewards like those it's hard to think anyone else can come close. And lord Rotstein does have a clang to it that i like." Claus swirled his wine and made a dreamy look towards the distance before returning to the conversation.

"If you can keep that offer going you will have the finest army at your disposal and a battlefield commander like few others. So i say you are a hard bargain sir, or should i say your highness?" Claus humoured, then he extended his hand for Patrick.

As Patrick took his hand Claus continued to speak
"But do not be mistaken, remember the Tulza's." Claus said, at first it sounded like a warning, but the look he made afterwards was of a genuine concern. Not a threat. Patrick tightened his grip .
"And I will ask you sir to remember what happens to those who betray the De Reimer family, don't let this army I'm giving you go to your head, they are loyal to nothing but coin, coin that I am giving them, if you decide to go turncoat then you will find that you have very few allies to back you up" Patrick said firmly. "But lets not dwell on that thought, I look forward to what our new alliance can bring us" with that said Patrick went back to studying the maps that lay before him.
"If there isn't anything else, I need to get back to my work"

"We are mercenaries, as long you have the coin we are all on your side." Claus said to the stern monarch.

"That should be all, we should get this written down but i can sign that when the document is ready, i don't think i need to trouble you any further this evening... boss." Claus followed the last sentence with a small laugh and a tip of the hat.

Claus left the room to find Alenius in a far better mood than before, it appeared that she had joined his guards outside and were like them excited about the meeting.
"So how did it go?" She asked with an actual smile on her face. Claus was slightly taken aback by this since he was not used to her positive side but quickly resumed his usual mannerisms.

"Boys and girls, the steel fist got itself some work now." He took his two men with one arm around each of their shoulders and smiled at Alenius.
"The Steel fist has been hired by the imperial concord. And it seems like i can call myself a general without lying too much." Claus informed as his men seemed a bit excited, he kept on.
"I'd say this calls for a celebratory drink.... care to join?" Claus was smiling broadly at Alenius.

Alenius shook her head with a smile on her lips before answering. "Maybe another time when the taverns are not so crowded, till then you know where to find me" she finished as she turned round and walked away.

As Alenius walked away the trio of mercenaries began moving out of the keep.

-"So boss, how'd ya like a piece of that?" One of his men questioned, obviously referring to Alenius.
Claus gave him a slap over the shoulder, albeit not a very hard one.
-"That's no way to speak of a lady!" He was smirking.
A short silence followed, then the other armsman spoke.
-"So you would like a piece of that?" He quickly dodged Claus's slap, and the captain shook his head a bit.
-"Well i'm not gonna deny it, nice ladies like that aren't too common." Followed by a holler from his men, Claus was certain that Alenius could hear this exchange, but he didn't care, he imagined her simply shaking her head with a sigh.

After a slow walk back to the Drunken merchant, with banter, hollering and the odd cat whistle, the trio entered the tavern.
-"YOU THERE!" Shouted a young girl with short black hair whom had confronted Claus and tried her best to impose her presence, which she did sort of well considering her size, even if she was taller than most of her age.
Claus was slightly shocked at this, but put his hands to his hips and gave a big smirk.
-"Are you captain Rotstein!?" She pointed, she also mimicked Claus's pose.
-"Why yes i am, whom might you be!?" Claus told with weight to his voice, so everyone in the tavern could hear. Many of his men sat down and were laughing, so she has probably been here waiting for a while before he showed up.
-"I am Katrina Nikos! I am here to provide your company with the best blacksmith in town!" She looked positively gleaming, proud and resolute. Claus noticed she was here to stay.
-"And where might this man be? Hm?" Claus told with a massive grin, obviously teasing the girl. Whom flustered with anger but managed to keep her cool.
-"SHE! Is right here!" Katrina bombarded out, kinda hefty for one of her age. She tossed her hair with her right hand, but the impression was a bit flawed because of its length. A few cheers, a whistling and someone shouting 'feisty' could be heard from all around.

-"Oh yeah? Best blacksmith in town? So what makes you think you have anything to offer to the best damn mercenary company in the world!?" Claus jeered. A cheer was heard from all the mercenaries in the tavern.
-"I am... strong, great at making weapons, and smart!" She kind of struggled a bit, but managed to come up with a few answers. She wasn't shy but it was evident she wasn't used to situations like these either.
-"Great at making weapons ey? Well here in the fist we usually buy our equipment, so i don't really see a point in a blacksmith!" Claus leaned forward towards Katrina, and put his left foot on a stool and rested his arms on his leg.
-"I CAN FIGHT! I am strong! I can probably fight better than many of your men!" The young girl proclaimed, followed by fake impressed 'oooh's.
Claus stood there and let the men gasp and awe at her, then he kicked off the stool and began circling her.
-"Fight better than seasoned military veterans do we? Hehe, somehow i doubt that." Claus was trying to get an all around view of Katrina but she turned and faced him with a stern face.
-"I can beat any of your men! I am no little pushover!" She proudly stated, but also swallowed when she saw that Claus stopped circling her and set his gaze upon her eyes.
-"Now THAT! Is what i wanted to hear! ARMS!!!" Claus roared and held out his right hand, and Katrina was shocked when mercs removed some of the tables from the floor. 'Fight fight fight' was chanted from all around the drunken merchant.

-"EY! No fighting in the bar!" The barkeep yelled. Claus was now given a loose chair leg resembling a mace in his hand, Katrina was handed a wooden sword. Claus inspected his weapon and tested its balance when he spoke.
-"This is no fight, this is a trial! Every single man and woman in the steel fist has fought me. And NONE have bested me!" There was massive cheers, somewhere in the crowd 'Yeah right' was heard followed by laughter.
Katrina looked positively terrified for a moment, but gathered herself and assumed a fighting stance.
-"EN GARDE!" Claus roared and the fight begun, much to the dismay of the barkeep.

Katrina was no coward she thought, so she quickly stepped in a swung towards Claus centre. A move he simply stepped back from.
She swung again but was again backstepped, with a two handed blow she struck for Claus left shoulder but he blocked it without much effort, took a step past her and turned around and gave a push with his mace to her shoulder which put Katrina off balance.
Laughs and cheers were given when Claus twirled his mace, pranced about with a whistle as Katrine frustratingly regained her posture.
She growled and began a flurry of attacks, while not masterful swings she at least got some proper strength in with each one. Claus however struck two of the blows away from his body, and sideswiped her sword and sidestepped her entirely.
She did not halt her strikes though and made a backhanded strike which Claus barely managed to block with his stool-leg weapon.
-"Not bad." Claus told, Katrina smiled.
-"My turn!" He countered and her previous optimism turned into stress.
Claus made a swing for her head, which she managed to parry. He struck for her left arm which she barely pulled out from harms way and then Claus finished off with placing his right foot on her torso, and pushing hard so that she was haphazardly flung to the ground.
Triumphant Claus held his hands in the air, cheers and a few boo's were the response of the audience.
Katrina however did not give up and got to her feet and ran at Claus full speed planning a massive two-handed strike to strike down on his back.
Claus however saw it coming, did a sidestep and tripped her so she slammed into the floor.
He then followed with kneeling besides her and putting his right foot upon her back, she wasn't going anywhere.
-"It looks like you couldn't best me." Claus smirked and looked at Katrina's struggled face. He had barely broken a sweat while Katrina had gone all in and was panting heavily. When he told those words a tear could be seen rolling from her eye and she sulked a response.
-"No... i couldn't..." She was obviously sad, and turned her face away so no one could see.
-"Luckily, no one said you had to beat me!" Claus removed his foot and extended a hand. Katrina looked up and confusedly took it.
With little effort he stood himself and Katrina up from the floor, dropped his makeshift mace and in a rough manner wiped the tears from her left cheek.
-"Soldiers of the fist! I didn't know we needed one, but we got our first blacksmith!!!" Claus bombarded out and was met with a massive cheer, Katrina was stunned.
-"Now i want you all to welcome our new trooper. DRINKS ON ME!!!" And his last words were met with a massive cheer, two mercs, one a woman lifted up Katrina and carried her around on their shoulders for a lap around the tavern before putting her down at a table.

-"And nothing too strong for her just now, she's young you know." Claus boomed out, he saw some of the men already bringing tankards of strong ale to her table, a 'naaaaw' followed by another laughter was heard from that general area.
-"Hey, i'm no child!" Katrina yelled out, still a bit shocked by the turn of events.
-"Of course not." Claus jeered with a massive grin.

-"Also do go and tell about the good news, but not just yet. For not only have we got a new blacksmith, we have a new employer! Soldiers of the fist, you are now proud fighters for the imperial concord, so at least pretend you care about them!" Claus boomed out, the cheers were a mix of glad shouts, disappointed jeering and one table chanting 'money, money!'.
-"More information about that to follow, but now, do tell everyone, and enjoy yourself! We won't be here in Nyhem forever so better drink it dry quickly!!!" Claus was met with a loud cheer as he walked up to the barkeep and slammed a hefty gold coin unto the counter, the barkeep looked a bit less annoyed as he took it, bit it and pocketed it.

It was the strangest of things, she had come back from her expenditure to the market with Naomi, and Beatrice, when not more than a week later did Duncan come to fetch her. She preoccupied herself with writing in her journal, keeping track of the events that had taken place after the departure of the nobles, and other representatives from the various kingdoms. She hadn't spoke to Duncan since their last encounter in the head advisor's chambers, and even more so, when she opened the door to see him standing before her, she was more surprised. She had busied herself with other matters, and almost avoided running into him when possible. Aurelia heard of the arrival of his sister, Isabel, and his brother, Patrick, but she had yet to meet them either. She felt informal in appearance for she had not the time to ready herself proper, and wore her hair raven-black hair loose instead of the typical braided fashion she favored. More importantly, she lacked any of her usual jewelry as well. The only item that she wore, that others could remark on, was the odd choice of her dress; on this day, she had chosen a light blue chiffon, and muslin gown. The dress had sheer, split, arm-sleeves, that allowed her to move her arms about freely. The color was very unlike her tastes, for she normally strayed from lighter shades of color, but this dress had been a gift. Together, Duncan and Aurelia hurried with quick footsteps through the stone corridors of the keep. She remembered back in the hey-day of Heylot's reign, how exquisite the castle looked when she first arrived. Most of the tapestries, and rugs had remained; however, the golden candelabras had disappeared, and where replaced with sturdy iron ones. John had a lot of remodeling done in a sense, as he removed, or either sold the keep's expensive finery's to help pay off the debt. The candelabras provided essential funds from the sale, not a significant amount, but a good portion nonetheless. If she recalled right, they were now in the home of Davos and Sarah Ironbark.

As they came upon the door to the High Council chamber room, Aurelia slowed her walk, allowing Duncan to overtake her in the lead. During their walk, she had said not a word, simply because she didn't know what to say without making the situation seem awkward.
-

As Duncan opened the door he avoided making eye contact with Aurelia; things has been a bit awkward since their last exchange. As he walked into the room he could see that both of his siblings had arrived. A seventh chair had been brought up for Patrick and he sat opposite the kings chair, Isabel was sitting next to the kings chair and was browsing through various parchments of paper, she was so fixated that she barely acknowledged Duncan and Aurelia walking into the room.

"When will the others be arriving" said Patrick bluntly "We have much to discuss and little time" Duncan sat down before he replied to his brother.

"It is still early, give them a few more minutes" Duncan said calmly, he knew his brother was not a man who liked being kept waiting. "May I introduce high magister Aurelia Vyncetta, the Magisterial advisor of the high council" Duncan proclaimed. Patrick gave Aurelia a hard stare, while Isabel merely glanced up before reading her notes once again.

"My brother has told me much about you, I am sure that no introduction is needed for me?" Patrick said
-

As she entered the room, Patrick, whom she deduced to be Duncan's brother, and Isabel, his sister, all bore a similar resemblance to one another. It was hard to mistake them for anything else, perhaps cousins, but definitely siblings. The other advisors of the High Council had not arrived yet, giving the four now present some privacy. She took her seat quickly, sitting next to Duncan, as she was still unsure of Isabel. Her last conversation regarding his sister came to mind as she reflected back to his cautionary words. His sister was cold, and from the looks of it, so was Patrick, or at least he didn't like to be kept waiting from the sound of it. When Duncan introduced her to his brother and sister, Isabel merely glanced at her. However, Patrick inquired if there needed to be an introduction at all. Her lip curled at the hint of a smile.

"No, you're quite right. It's good to finally meet you both in person, Patrick." She turned her head to Isabel, who remained buried in the sheets of parchment before her. "And you as well, Isabel."

"I hope you have had a welcoming stay despite the ongoing events elsewhere in Formaroth." Aurelia remained cordial in her words, no need to be harsh. Of all things now, she wished she had spoken to Duncan on the way down, and hadn't been so prideful. She could have asked him what to say, or what not to do to gain favour in their eyes. However, she let the matter rest, and instead, reached for a silver pitcher filled with water, and proceeded to fill a goblet full of the liquid. She brought it to her lips, and drank enough to quench her thirst before setting it down next to her hand for easy access. Just as she set the goblet down, the door to the chamber opened, and in came the other advisors they had waited for.
-

Alex was the first person to walk in. As he made his way over to the seat next to Aurelia he deliberately avoided making eye contact with either Patrick and Isabel. He knew of their reputation and didn't want to draw their attention. The next was Alice who sat in-between Alex and Patrick; shielding her friend from Patrick's cold gaze. The finial person to enter the room was Cerlina Tuania, the new Head advisor. Cerlina slowly made her way round the table to where Isabel was sitting, instead of sitting down next to her she simply continued to wait next to her.

"It is customary for the head advisor to sit next to the king she said" She said confidently. Isabel slowly looked up and gave Cerlina a cold foul look.

"It wouldn't do any harm to maintain tradition" Duncan added quickly before his sister had a chance to respond, the last thing he needed was an argument between Cerlina and his sister. Isabel's face mellowed slightly, she paused for a moment, before she collected her things and begrudgingly stood up. She threw Cerlina one last hostile look before sitting down in the seat next to her. Before a brief awkward silence Duncan decided to speak up

"The first matter to attend to his the Coronation" Duncan said "We need to solidify my claim as king before more people flock to the Manshrew Alliance"

"Agreed" replied Patrick. "A fortnight seems like a decent amount of time to prepare".

-
The air was stiff between Cerlina, and Isabel, Aurelia figured that the woman that demanded to sit next to the king, was the new head advisor by her demeanor alone. She kept a weary gaze on her, still undecided on whether or not she could be trusted. However, as Duncan had suggested, she put her suspicions aside, and believed it best for Cerlina to prove herself. It was then that Duncan stood up after Isabel collected her pieces of parchments, and chose the seat next to her. Her eyebrows rose in surprise at his mention at arranging his coronation, but she smiled nonetheless. It felt shocking to her to realize that Duncan persisted in becoming King of Formaroth, then again, John was dead, and the pursuit for the throne was more real than ever.

"Will you hold your coronation in the Grand Temple, like King John? I think the public would appreciate seeing their future king be crowned. Manshrew will move quickly to usurp you, so the quicker we can have the coronation in place, the better for you. I can arrange for the scribes to make announcement posters for your coronation, and have them posted in key areas across Nyhem. Will you be reaching out to any of the important figures here for support? Such as the Ironbarks?" She piped up, folding her hands in front of her. This was the first time she spoke to Duncan since their uncomfortable confrontation in the head advisor's chambers, which would now belong to Cerlina.

-
"Indeed, have the scribes make the posters as soon as possible" Duncan said as he briefly make eye contact with Aurelia before quickly looking away "My reputation with the people of Nyhem is still somewhat low and we need them on our side" Duncan turned to face Isabel "In order to do this we will need to prepare food and drink for the celebration, as a gesture of good faith to the people of Nyhem. At the same time we need to do it with as little expense as possible. After all wars swallow gold like a pit in the ground, any idea's". Isabel simply smiled in confidence

"Indeed, the last thing we need is for the crown to owe more money to the Ironbarks. Instead I should be able to divert some of the funds from my my most recent shipment to pay for this endeavor. Inviting the Ironbarks would be a sound move as well, it would be a good opportunity for me to negotiate better terms of payment with them". Isabel finished as Duncan nodded in agreement.

"Agreed, Alex I am putting you in charge of inviting the guests" He said as he turned to Alex

"Yes your grace" He stammered, still nervous at the presence of Patrick.

"Now that has been sorted it is time he discussed a far more important matter" Patrick said, his voice immediately caught everyone's attention. "As you all know house Greensworth has abandoned Orog with their army for their own protection. There was simply no way we could have defended them against the full force of the Manshrew Alliance. However their was a additional order that many of you are unaware about" Patrick glared around the room to make sure everyone was listening "House Greensworth will be invading Ralda alongside House Anjervine, with their combined forced house Mazeltof will be unable to withstand the invasion".

-
Aurelia remained silently as Duncan addressed everyone else. She mulled over several ideas on how to keep the costs low for having the coronation ceremony, of course without having to borrow more money from the Bank of Nyhem. She was about to speak up when Patrick brought news to her that made her lean forward in the seat of her chair. Greensworth, and Anjervine were combining forces to control Ralda, and by doing so, that would unseat the Mazeltof's, and quite possibly remove them from power, unless of course, they submitted and joined their side.

"Isabel, I wish to consult with you on the matters of the food for the coronation, but lets discuss that later." She said with a nod of her head, before turning her attention to Patrick to address the matters that concerned her the most.

"Do we have any idea if Mazeltof will submit to the invasion, and join the Imperial Concord? House Manshrew will not be happy to hear that we have abandoned Orog for the sake of invading another kingdom. If necessary, which may be the case for this matter, someone new will have to be placed in charge of Ralda, if Mazeltof does not submit to our initial invasion. Do you have any contenders for who will take the lead over them, or do you plan on imposing martial law?" Aurelia's black brows furrowed together in concern. Leaving the seat of power open in Ralda would give Manshrew an incentive to recapture the kingdom, and restore Mazeltof to their rightful seat of power, of course, if they did not join the Imperial Concord.

-
"I think the chances of house Mazeltof submitting to the imperial concord are very slim indeed" Patrick said with a smile "Henry Mazeltof is a suborn man and he will not leave Ralda, let alone submit his lands to the Concord". Patrick continued to smile; Henry Mazeltof had often spoken poorly about the De Reimer family and now he had two choices, submit his lands to the family he hated, or be destroyed.

"I have already decided who will take control of Ralda" Duncan said "House Greensworth will become the new rulers in payment for having to leave their lands. As you are aware house Greensworth isn't particularly happy about having to abandon their homeland, this should pacify them until we can re-capture Orog". Once Duncan finished Cerlina handed him a letter that she had been concealing.
"What's this" Duncan said as he took the letter

"A letter from my mother, Catryn Tuania. She is requesting reinforcements for Telmarion..."

-
As the meeting came to a close both Alex and Alice stood up almost simultaneously and headed out the door without pause, it was clear that they both desired to be elsewhere. Cerlina was the next to stand up

"Is their anything else you wish to discuss your grace" She said politely to Duncan

"Not for now" Duncan replied

"Very well your grace" As she stepped away from her seat she looked towards Isabel before adding "till next time Miss De Reimer" with a mocking smile on her face. Isabel threw her a venomous glace as Cerlina made her way out the room. After a brief pause Patrick stood up.

"I would like to speak to both of you before I leave for Cawanor" Patrick said as he rose from his seat. "I wish to bid you both a proper farewell, after all it may be a while before we see each other again" he finished as he made his way towards the door. Both Duncan and Isabel had remained sitting with the latter still studiously looking at her notes.

-
While Alice and Alex both left the room with haste, clear to Aurelia that the presence of the other De Reimer siblings unnerved them, Aurelia remained behind. She had the impression, that Cerlina Tuania, despite the familial relations to Evelyn, she may just be more cordial, and courteous to Duncan. At least she had enough respect to address him properly when in his presence, and to maintain proper traditions, and for that Aurelia gave her proper credit. Patrick arose from his seat, gave his siblings a short farewell, and then exited the room. The only people that remained behind were Aurelia, Duncan, and his sister, Isabel. She continued to study the leafs of parchment before, examining them with scrutiny. She could only wonder at what Isabel found so intriguing in the mix of black inked letters.

Clearing her throat, Aurelia brought attention to herself by speaking up to address the matters she felt were a concern, "Ahem. Isabel, about the food for the gala after Duncan's coronation ceremony. I had an idea as how to keep costs down. Instead of spending an inexorable amount of finances, I think perhaps, that it would be best for us to prepare simple dishes, such as the ones that our citizens in the Field District consume on a nightly basis. Of course, we could add spices, and other ingredients to account for the loss of taste, but if it works according to plan, in the long run, we would save a considerable amount of money. I would even like to suggest choosing a prominent figure from the Field District to help oversee it. Not only would we keep expenses low, but it would help raise Duncan's reputation amongst the lower classes here. Which, if that were to prove true, instead of viewing him as his infamous nickname suggests, they would view him in a more congenial light." Here, Aurelia turned her green-gold eyes towards Duncan, and she offered him a small, pleasant smile. "Of course, if you agree with me that is. I also believe that it would be a striking idea for you to mirror, or mimic our late King John in attitude. The people loved him for his benign nature, and fairness, if you were to display such a personal visage, I believe our people would hold you in a more favorable light."

"And... There was another idea I had in mind. As you all know very well, we still owe a very large amount of coin to the Ironbark's. As I have studied magick for the majority of my life, there is something that I thought of that may hold the key to our success for decreasing our debt to them, and creating a supply worthy of demand that would stimulate our economy, even in time of war."

"Isabel, I believe you may agree with me on this when I ask, what do women favour most of all? That answer is simple. The common woman, from the lowliest of the low, to the high-born noblewoman, all desire to look fashionable, or at least to have a proper appearance. As such, lace is held in high esteem. The more lace a woman owns, the higher her place in society is viewed. The poorest woman is held above the woman with no lace to wear. However, during wartime, the prices of all goods rise astonishingly high. If you were both to allow me to run experimentations, I believe that I could either stimulate the growth of cotton plants through means of magick, or I could even have a select amount of mages here in Nyhem help me weave lace, as it does not require much energy to be spent. Our supply of lace is majorly imported from the other kingdoms, but if we were to supply our own, we would also be creating a source of income. I could even look into other areas that magick may be of aid to us. So my question to you both is... what say you?" With that, Aurelia folded her hands in her lap, and awaited for their response. It sounded ludicrous, but the past few nights, she had spent time studying how to lower the debt incurred by wartime affairs, and how to bring in a steady source of gold. Surely they would think her mad for trying to win a war from the supply of lace alone, but it was a start.

-
Isabel raised her head to face Aurelia, this had been the first time Isabel truly acknowledged her, and she wasn't what she had expected. Although having said that Isabel didn't really know what to expect. After all the only Magister she had met before this was Alice Budwin. She chose to pause for a while before finally answering

"Certainly, I would think they will be satisfied with simply bread and water. I mean it's free food what more do they want"? Isabel said with a hint of disgust in her voice "As for appointing someone I will leave Duncan to decide that, however if we are appointing someone to oversee this I want to make sure they don't mess up my planning" she said as she looked at Duncan

"Don't worry" Duncan replied "they will be there only as a symbol of good faith, the gala's preparation will be completely under your control". Isabel did not like giving out responsibility to other people, let alone to someone she thought beneath her.

"Good" she replied "As for your idea of increasing money, you are right to assume that clothing would be good source of profit, particularly during war. The downside is that the only way I can see this adding money on a notable level would be by doing it on a massive scale. This would require vast amounts of magical energy and as a result, hundreds if not thousands of mages. Not to mention mages tend to demand massive amounts of money in exchange for their services. Of course you are the magical expert not me, what do you think" Isabel finished as she gave Aurelia a inquisiting look.

-
Relieved that Isabel had finally recognized her, instead of treating her like dirt on her boot, Aurelia did well to hide a smile of satisfaction, she in turn, used the turning point of the conversation to agree with her. "Well, of course, we could simply do away with bread and water, but the idea is to have those of the lower classes to look at Duncan as a commoner's man, a man for the people, one that simply doesn't squander away their taxes like Heylot did; someone that is relate-able, someone that they will side with in the war to spread, as it stands now, we have the opportunity to present Manshrew as an outsider since Uzgob is so far away. We may even go so far as to dim down the appearance, or thoughts of castle life as being luxurious. So to speak, if the people see us starving, while they starve, they will know that we are just like them, and not above them." She replied, it was clear to her that Isabel did not favor those beneath her in any form. It mattered not to her whether someone was appointed or not to oversee the preparations for food, instead, Aurelia, from past experiences with Heylot, as well as John, witnessed how the people responded to the coronation of John after Heylot. He had done the same, and avoided extravagant luxuries, something his brother was notorious for.

"Yes, I believe you're right in those regards, seeing as how the population of Mages in Nyhem are relatively small in comparison to the population of them altogether. However, if I have permission, I believe that there may be another way to encourage the growth of cotton, asides from us mages waving our hands about demanding the plants to grow. If anything, there may be a way of magically enriching the soil, or even the manure used on the fields as fertilizer. I have already done a considerable amount of research, but I have yet had the time to actually test out my thesis. While it sounds ridiculous, I beg of you both, that if you will permit my research, I will have something ready in time for the coronation ceremony." This time, instead of focusing her attention on Isabel solely, she gazed steadily at Duncan. After all, he would be crowned King of Formaroth in two weeks time, regardless of the spread of yet, another war. And, it was his opinion that mattered most, not Isabel's even if she was his sister.

-
Duncan turned to face Aurelia, it was clear she was directing the request more at him than his sister.
"It certainly sounds like a worthy endeavor. As you say Isabel, clothing is particularly valuable during times of war. I will give you permission to conduct this experiment, however if we are to fund this project for you, we will expect results" Duncan said firmly, as much as he wanted to help Aurelia with her experiments he had to make sure that he didn't waste money on gainless ventures. At mention of this Isabel's eyes lit up as she clearly remembered something important.

"While we are still discussing magical experiments, It occurred to me that our High Magister, Alice Budwin has recently succeeded in harnessing large amounts of magical energy into a physical form; a red gem to be precise. From what I hear it harness great power and would be very useful for your experiment. She is currently looking for a way for it to be used by practical means, if you are interested"?

-
Relief flooded across her delicate face, her eyebrows relaxed, and her eyes softened at hearing his words, granting her the permission to pursue her research. She felt confident in her abilities that she could provide effective results before the coronation. However, this meant that the days ahead of her would consist once more of a lack of sleep as delving deeper into her studies would, and performing experiments, would consume almost every hour of her wakefulness. She had an idea to propose to Duncan, perhaps he would let her experiment in the castle garden, the one that was below her balcony? Holding off on the question only when Isabel provided a curious slew of words.

"You mean to say, that Alice Budwin of Cawanor, has found a means of placing magickal energy into a non-living being?" It sounded incredulous, but it was Aurelia's only hope of succeeding in her experiments. Here she nodded vigorously at Isabel's inquiry of her interest in the matter, "Yes, absolutely. I take it that she stills remains behind in Cawanor? If so, by all means, I would be more than happy to establish a series of correspondences with her concerning the matter."

Clapping her hands together in a manner to recall her original idea, Aurelia then turned to look at Duncan once more, there was no use in being cold, and unfriendly in the presence of his sister. Besides, if Isabel discovered anything of the matter, which she hoped that she didn't, about the words Duncan uttered, she felt that Isabel would be the person to never let either of them live it down, or perhaps a conflict would arise from it. Regardless, she brushed those thoughts aside, and stowed them away in the recesses of her mind.

"Ah! Before I forget. I don't suppose you would mind giving me leeway in the royal garden? It would keep my experiments hidden from the prying eyes of the public, until I have produced such evidence that my theory is sustainable, and also provide me with a large area of soil in which to work." Aurelia proposed, hoping that Duncan would relent, and give her permission. If not, she would have to stick to her potted ferns on her balcony.

-
"You have my permission, after all the royal gardens are sadly not used for much else anymore" Duncan said "now I am afraid I must head off, their are many matters that require my attention and I must see to them as soon as possible" As Duncan stood from his chair he noticed that his sister was making no signs of moving from her seat.

"Do you plan to do your work here rather than return to your chambers sister"? He asked.

"I will return to my room once I am certain that the furniture has been replaced" Isabel said as she shuddered "I would rather sleep on this table than spend a night in the same bed that belonged to Edward Du Paraquette". Normally Duncan would roll his eyes at his sisters antics, however in this case he found himself agreeing with her.

"Understood" he replied grimly "till next time sister" Duncan then turned to face Aurelia before breifly adding "and to you as well" before finally leaving the room.

War had come to Formaroth once again.

Lanaya Triskell Dionisia, perched on a tall, narrow rock jutting tens of meters out of the sea near Nyhem, considered how this had come to pass. It had been a tumultuous month indeed.

Far below her, the Ocean crashed against the stone. This was one of her favorite spots to come to when she needed to think or be away from the troubles of life in the city. A spire of rock jutting out of the water utterly inaccessible except by flight, it was truly her place. There was enough room for perhaps two other people to sit if they crowded together, though Lana had never tested this. She sat cross legged, her waist length copper hair caught in the unceasing coastal wind, fluttering like a pennant atop a castle tower. It was cold, biting wind, and she clad in a very functional winter traveling outfit, despite the otherwise warm season. Deep blue in stark contrast to her hair and form fitting, the outfit was nonetheless multi layered and thick. She would change out of it as soon as she returned home.

Occasionally, she would raise her voice in song, choosing at random from the songs sung at court or a few sea shanties she knew. Ordinarily, the wind would carry away the sound quickly, but her skill with illusion magic let her cast her voice unnaturally far with a simple spell, even in these conditions. She idly wondered if she had inspired any tales of mermaids or other fantastical sea creatures in the sailors that passed nearby from time to time.

Glancing towards the sun, she realised how long she had been here. She had a meeting with Duncan De Reimer to attend this afternoon. Standing atop the spire of rock, she began muttering words in an arcane dialect. She could shape shift without the incantation, but shifting clothes and all took a more complex spell. After several moments of chanting, her form altered to that of a sea-bird and she spread her wings to catch the wind, rising elegantly into the air.

It was a short flight back to her house in Nyhem, a moderately sized but very well decorated and kept townhouse in the higher class area of the city. She landed on the second story balcony and shifted back to her normal form, stepping inside and beginning to shrug off the thick winter clothing. She considered her current plan while she changed into one of her more expensive dresses.

A number of her students and several of her associates had been in touch through correspondence - they all knew of the impending war, and they knew that the state would desire mages for its armies. They also knew that if they banded together under Lana, she would be able to use their services as a bargaining chip in the politics of Nyhem - and so they had. Many of them were young and idealistic, much like her. Less interested in money and more interested in changing the world for the better.

That had led to her current plan. It was not her usual kind of plan, for it involved sacrificing mages on the altar of war, and yet, she had deemed their loss worthwhile for the sake of the many. She would offer their services to the Imperial Concord at significantly less than a battlemage group usually cost, in exchange for the creation of laws protecting mages. She was sure Duncan would see the value in both the service of the mages and the laws themselves, it would be a deal too good to pass up.

As she finished dressing, now clad in a flowing red dress of the style currently popular in court, she moved towards the carriage that would take her to Miserth keep and her meeting, touching up her appearance with a few illusory pieces of jewelry as she went.Normally she avoided carriages whenever possible, despising the time they took and the inevitably bumpy ride, yet in this instance it would be both too much magical effort and likely rude to fly straight up to the soon-to-be King.

Before entering the carriage Lana looked to her left and saw a column of mercenaries marching up the road and passing the carriage, she had heard of them, the Steel fist they were called. A loud and rough bunch, although right now they looked unexpectedly sharp and marched with perfect unison.

The Steel Fist was on the march, sporadic columns were seen all over the city while they converged one by one to a large parade leaving the city along one of its main streets, incidentally the same one they arrived on.
But this time they did not smile, they did not wear parade dress. Their gait and posture was completely different, where the first time they had arrived they looked happy and sloppy, they now looked concentrated and straight backed.
Barely a single footfall was out of sync, drums sounded the rhythm and the sound was frankly terrifying to some of the citizens whom quickly got out of the way, or simply stayed inside.
The entire feel was different, no happy songs, no laughs or jeers. Dead silence except for the beating drums, the synchronized footfalls and the odd shouted order followed by a hornblow to make sure the columns were moving properly and converge correctly.

Their orders were simple, the Steel Fist was to set up a temporary camp outside Nyhem and when all the men had left the city the fist would march for the east.
Claus had conveyed his orders to his lieutenants while he himself took care of some final business, mostly boring things like getting hold of supplies and equipment, which miss Nikos had unexpectedly but expertly begun performing with little to no reasons to complain, actually outperforming the lieutenant who usually were in charge of it. Which Claus enjoyed greatly.
But one task he had sent for the young lady to perform with him personally.

-"You sent for me Claus." Katrina said to catch his attention, he simply turned to her with a stern face.
-"When you address me during work you will do so with either 'sir' or 'captain', is that understood!?" Claus boomed out, the young girl was taken aback but regained her posture with a salute.
-"Sorry sir, yes sir, aye captain!" She nervously let out, but she was relieved to see her response had made Claus do one of his classic smirks before speaking.
-"At ease, but proper manners to commanding officers is one of the cornerstones of this company, remember that. Regardless, i sent for you to inform me on a matter a blacksmith should have a great deal of insight in." Katrina a bit confusedly asked.
-"Sir? What are you referring to?" She was not certain of what he meant.
-"I need to give a gift to our new king that will be crowned soon, and seeing how war and fighting is what i do best i thought something along those lines would be fitting." Claus spoke clearly before carrying on.
-"I need a highly proficient weaponsmith, whom works fast and makes great quality weapons. I do not go to our usual provider since they only make bulk goods and that stuff, frankly isn't good enough for blue-bloods."
Katrina was going to speak when Claus cut her off.
-"Oh, and don't count yourself, you are too busy running the supplies operations, especially since when i noticed you do that part better than me." Katrina was first annoyed but it turned into a blush when Claus mentioned her work.
-"Umm.. thank you.... SIR! Yes sir!" She hadn't fully gotten into the proper ways of a military force yet.
Claus simply smirked.
-"Well, i know a really good place, known as the best in town, i'll show the way!" Miss Nikos joyfully began showing the way.

From the foundry, Claus ordered a weapon to be presented to the king upon his coronation, as a gift from the captain of the Steel Fist.
A lightweight all steel flanged mace with a twist below its head, hollow and kinda small compared to the usual maces of the steel fist or any other military forces. The handle covered in white leather with dark brown cords in cross patterns. The weapon polished to a mirror shine and adorned with tasteful inlays of latten engraved with flowers and a few snakes on the latten leading up to the flanges upon the head. The flanges themselves with small crowns as holes in them to reduce weight further. And atop its head, an inch long sharp spike.
Claus also ordered for the maker of the weapon to present it to the new king with a simple speech, fully making it a gift befit nobility.
After Claus had made the order, Katrina however left a small modification. She added a ring mount on the handle where a braided leather hoop would sit for fastening it to any belt.
She also made sure that she got a specially made braid made in time before the steel fist left the city. She made it in a way that was unmistakably hers and made sure it was added to the gift.

After paying for this order he left for the camp outside where he ordered a meeting with his lieutenants.
A sturdy stool was prepared for Claus to sit in and a few blankets were prepared for the lieutenants to sit upon.
-"So, how many men decided to stay this time?" Claus asked calmly.
-"About fifty sir, so fewer than expected, but about the same amount have decided to join the steel fist as well." The sturdy bearded man answered.
-"Very good. Seems like there's a few heads to bust in for me later." Claus told with a smirk, while there was a pair of scoffs, the mood was a bit tense.
-"Sir... with respect. Why are we leaving so soon? Especially when you told us you would consider any offers extra?" There was a couple of agreeing nods and some murmurs. It was evident this was something most of them wondered.
-"Right, you are right. I was a bit rash with this decision, but the reasoning is sound! You see, we will be paid... a lot, frankly a massive amount... of 130 gold a month!" The doubts turned to surprise and a literal grin on one of the men's faces followed by a few nods.
-"Very well captain, can't argue your decision there." Roogel agreed.
-"Although i haven't gone blind with gold fever, even if it looks like it. If at any point the concord cannot pay us, we're out! Remember the Tulza's!" Claus spoke while holding a clenched fist in front of him, his lieutenants repeated 'Remember the tulza's' and the hand motion in sync.
-"Fine by me." Ashala blurted out a bit louder than she anticipated.
-"Before two days have passed we will have marched for the nearest harbours with proper navy presence, there we shall sail for Telmarion to meet up with Orland Tuania who will babysit us while we defend their sorry asses." Claus informed, a scoff or two was heard at the last part of the sentence.
-"After the main force have converged apart from the scouts, we will move to the north to make up some proper strategies, i have already began studying some maps of the area, but i can't get a proper feel of the tactical possibilities without sending out our own scouts in the area." The captain informed as he crossed his legs.

The rest of the meeting was mostly specific details of which forces would travel to Telmarion first, since the navy could not afford to transport the entire force in a single go.
Claus decided to make sure he was on Telmarian soil as soon as possible with his scouts so they could move ahead in advance to maximise the tactical knowledge of the northern areas.

And with that Nyhem was within the next few days finally rid of the Steel Fist plaguing its streets and taverns.

“Forgive us your grace, but I don’t know how we can fit this through the door” Pleaded the servant. Both he and his two colleges had been here for nearly half an hour. They had been tasked by Duncan to try and move his desk from the head advisors chambers into his new bedroom, without any success. It was currently stuck at a diagonal angle in the wooden door frame.

“If they were able to get it in here then it must be possible to take it out” Duncan said, it was clear that he was frustrated with the whole ordeal “take it apart if you must”. Begrudgingly, the servants once again lifted the desk back into the room and set about taking it apart. Normally Duncan wouldn’t bother with such a trivial task, but the desk was important to him; it had been a gift from Isabel when he first arrived in Nyhem and even after all this time he had never replaced it. As Duncan watched the servants try to disassemble he failed to notice that Patrick was currently stood outside the door.

“Having trouble brother” He said. His voice startled the servants who immediately stopped what they were doing
“Nothing of importance” Duncan relied glumly. “May I inquire why you are here?”

“I have come to bid farewell” Patrick said as he slowly paced into the room “As you already knew I was not staying here for long and I need to get back to Cawanor”.

“Leaving so soon?” Duncan said, clearly surprised by the sudden announcement of his brother’s departure “I knew your stay here was brief but you only arrived here a week ago” he continued as he motioned to the servants to leave. Patrick waited for the servants to exist the room before he responded

“War waits for no one, and Cawanor is currently leaderless” Patrick said, his demeanour had changed slightly now that the servants had left, though he was still stern, he was somewhat more laidback than usual. “I need to be there in case house Sutharlan decides to invade from the south. Besides I am far more use to you down there than I am up here”.

“I suppose you are right, though it will be a shame to see you go. Your visits are too few” Duncan said as he sat down in a chair next to the unlit fireplace.

“I apologise brother” Patrick replied as he sat down in the chair opposite “I hoped I would at least be able to stay for your coronation”

“It’s hardly your fault. You have a kingdom to rule, besides you never seem comfortable here in Nyhem anyway” Duncan smiled

“Too many schemers and backstabbers for my liking” Patrick paused for a moment “Of course who are we to criticise, we did turn on the king we swore to protect and put his vassals to the sword” Patrick said humorously. Duncan smiled in response

“It is funny how people call us traitors despite the fact they would have done the same in a heartbeat. After all, not many of Heylot’s supporters remained loyal once they realised they were on the losing side”. Duncan sighed. There was a brief silence before Patrick decided to change the conversation, he briefly looked round to make sure they were alone; the servants had shut the door behind them and anyone trying to eavesdrop would have a hard time listening through the thick wooden door. Even so Patrick lowered his voice to make certain.

“Have you found out what caused the death of King John yet”? Patrick said sternly. Duncan was slightly surprised by the sudden shift in tone of the conversation.

“I had the alchemists’ guild take a look at the body, according to them there were no signs to indicate it was murder, it appears that he died from natural causes” Duncan whispered

“Is that what you believe?”

“No” Duncan said bluntly “It was simply too sudden. He was far too young for it to be old age and he showed no signs of ill health. I spoke to him hours before he was found dead and there was nothing out of the ordinary. He was killed, no question about it, the real question is how and who by. I currently have my spies looking into possible ways in which the assassin could have killed him and yet leave no trace. As for whom I am still unsure, John had very little enemies, at least none that would have taken the risk in trying to kill him, and I don’t see who could have benefited from his death”.

“Perhaps it was Andrew Manshrew; he was very quick to secure the throne for himself” Patrick suggested

“Unfortunately not, as much as I dislike the man he is too ‘honourable’, though I haven’t ruled him out as a possibility. Giles Blackwell is another possibility; from what I hear his niece is a skilled spy and assassin, meaning he would have the means to do so” Duncan let out a sigh before continuing “truth be told I have no idea as of yet, I will let you know if I find anything worthwhile”.

“Very good” said Patrick as he stood up from his chair “I must not delay any longer I must leave for Cawanor” Duncan had stood up almost simultaneously

“I understand brother, have you already said farewell to Isabel?”

“Yes I have. She seems to have adjusted quite well to her new position, all the same keep an eye on her; we don’t want a repeat of what happened down in the slums”. Duncan nodded in agreement as they both walked out of the room.

A Trip to the Royal Gardens

Upon the conclusion of the meeting with Duncan, and other important figures, Aurelia took her time returning to her chambers. In fact, she did not return so hastily, for she diverted her path, and ventured out into the royal garden’s, of which she was given control over. If she were going to experiment further on how to increase productivity through a dormant object, such as the soil itself, she would need to understand the scope of the well-being of the gardens. With fair weather in the skies over head on this day, the windows in the keep allowed a brilliant light to pass through the panes, illuminating the typically dark, and rather dreary keep. As her heeled slippers clicked against the stone floors, Aurelia kept a steady pace down the corridor, anxious not to be called for help by anyone, there was only so much talking she felt that she could contribute in a day. Had it not been for her good friend, Lanaya Triskell Dionisia, or simply Lana, as she knew her, she doubted she would have acquired such a position within Miserth Keep. Meeting at the Mage’s Circle in the Summer Isles, Aurelia and Lana shared a room during their entire stay throughout their lessons on the island. At first, the air was filled with tension, as it was clear to Aurelia that Lana questioned her appearance, with her eyes sweeping over her, brows furrowed together. It felt as if Lana wasn’t certain if Aurelia was the maid, or her room-mate. Luckily for Aurelia, she was not the maid. The first few weeks were awkward indeed, but finally, after not having anyone to speak to, Lana opened up to her by asking her where she came from.

While Aurelia was unsettled by her roommate’s affluence, she came to bear with it, just as Lana came to a quick understanding that Aurelia was more of a back-woods, hill-billy, albeit, with a knack for magick. It was this, perhaps, that brought them close together, for Lana couldn’t stand the way Aurelia ate her food, or the incorrect way she prepared her bed, or how she only used water to wash her hair. Lana took it upon herself to teach Aurelia the finer points of living, how to hold her fork properly, how to sit up straight, how to make it look as if she were floating when she walked, and even how to speak like a lady ought to. In exchange for her lessons in etiquette, Aurelia aided with Lana’s learning of magick, not that she didn’t understand it to begin with, but how to control the flow of her power with a more direct approach. During their stay at the Summer Isles, Lana and Aurelia became friends, while Aurelia mostly listened to Lana’s ravings, occasionally, Aurelia would also join in with her frustrations of daily life. They were like the moon and the sun, one bright and talkative, the other more morose and withdrawn.

Emerging onto the stone dais of the royal gardens, Aurelia paused in the sunshine, allowing herself to bask in its warmth, relishing how it felt upon her skin. A slight breeze in the air whisked her thin dress around her body, tossing her inky locks about her face. Her eyes swept over the gardens, taking in the sights of the red rose bushes in bloom, alongside the white lilies planted beneath the dais. There were many fragrant flowers found here in the garden, everything from common herbs such as rosemary, thyme, and lavender, to daisies, irises, clematis, and many more. Three oak trees took residence in the royal gardens as well, offering the only shade from the blistering summer heat. As she took a step off the dais and onto the stone pathway, Aurelia couldn’t help but to admire the smell of fresh earth from the recent rain’s days prior, it vaguely reminded her of home, not that ever had the chance to roam freely outdoors, due to her parent’s fear of the curious neighbors, but when her mother happened to leave a window open, it was then that young Aurelia would poke her head out the window and breathe in the fresh air.

Making her way to the farthest corner of the garden, where Queen Ruth’s roses bloomed in deep shades of crimson, Aurelia hoisted the folds of her dress up to her knees, and settled in amongst the flowers. She pushed, poked, and prodded at the plants, pinching and plucking the leaves of several flowers, careful not to take away any petals. These would become useful in her research later on. She would have only a few weeks to produce results for Duncan, or else she would be deemed a failure. If anything, she would need to write a letter to Lana, asking her for help in her latest endeavor. It helped to have a second, similar mind thinking like her, and even gaining a second opinion would help even more so by allowing her to view her projects from different aspects. Once she gathered what she needed to run tests on in her alembic instruments, she told herself that she would need to make a trip out to the Grand Library by scouring the shelves for any mention of enhancing the growth of plants in the soil by means of magick. Since she was High Magister, she would have access to the scrolls, tomes, and other articles of ancient literature stowed away, if she asked nicely that is.
