MS Paint...

Or tell me where you want to be, and I'll add you to the map.

This really conflicts with the entire setting. I'm gonna say "no". This is Alt-History, not Sci-Fi.

I think jet engines would directly conflict with the tech levels of everyone else. Steam power, man! Steam power! Think late-Victorian, with some out-of-place tech directly resulting from coal-burning.
Steampunk is sci-fi in the past and many classics which made steampunk were actually sci-fi during their age and also featured aliens at times. While aliens are a bit weird to even exist, I added it as a complication rather than an actual advantage. I could have Africans with Tripods and it wouldn't change much. But the mechanism how Martians interact is too much fun to miss.

As for jet engines, no. Actually given the mechanics of steam, turbine engines make far more sense to be developed sooner. Also jets were a thing by mid-WW1. It just took a while to develop them. But again we have mechs so arguing against jets seems arbitrary. Blue coal explicitly can replace gasoline engines here so building turbines either for jet propulsion or driving propellers like turboshafts is hardly out of reach.

I think you mean mid-WWII. WWI was the bit where we all used biplanes made out of canvas. But yeah, it definitely isn't too far-fetched to have jet engines be developed. I doubt that anyone would have invented them yet, though.

Sure thing!

Now can you come up with a name/history that's not from something actually historical? That's a rule of the RP, that this isn't Earth. Things are named differently. China is "Da Nanguo", Japan is "Akitsukuni", Germany is "Lancia", Russia is "Muskova", etc.

Not quite. The first "turbine" was developed by Hero of Alexandria back in the ancient age. The first turbine useful for something was made in the 18th century. Fast forward to the 19th century and the creation of steam turbines as we know them. Gas turbines which are the basis of jet engines made practical about a decade before WW1. And then during mid-WW1 they already had plans for using jets (including a ramjet propelled artillery shell).
What they lacked was materials and further study of jet engines (as well a few technicalities developed in 1929). Even then a Hungarian inventor actually made both turbojet and turboprop engine plans as far as back in 1926. And again, if machinery and material science is at a level to allow mechs I wouldn't be surprised if the concerns preventing jets to be fielded in 1916 would be nonexistent here.

Overall jets/turbines are just another form of propulsion. Jets are only convenient once standard propeller engines reach close to their practical limits. Granted, turbofans can be considered the mix of a turbojet and a ducted fan engine so they are kinda the best of both worlds. So considering this I am more likely to field a high-performance turbine-powered prop engine than actual jets.

@duck55223 care to give your verdict on martians and jet engines? Just to settle it. It's your lore, and more clarity is always good.

He's busy with family matters right now.
Although I can tell you he really didn't like my Martian idea back then. I don't know if he did reconsider this so I kinda took my chances with it.

As for jet engines, they are pretty much the only way you can get aircraft with steam working. Just by using steam turbines rather than gas turbines. The other alternative is internal combustion engines which of course don't exist here with blue coal so practical for steam. Describing my aircrafts to have jet engines is a bit misleading since it would draw the connotation I may try recreating late WW2 era jet aircraft. I don't.

I know he said he regretted blocking your idea so harshly, but I dunno if he changed his overall stance on the issue. I never knew about the jets, and while you could easily be right, we just gotta stay with that steampunk a e s t h e t i c, so I personally would say no to jet engines. Right now, at least. As time moves on, we might eventually reach that point.

Calling for aesthetics would feel like a buzzword made to fit one's own subjective view and pretend there's some truth in it.
Aesthetics is the same bad excuse we have for fantasy gun bans and other ridiculous actions because the person in charge would suffer from limited imagination.
I am talking in general terms here so don't worry I don't really accuse anybody. Just disagree with limiting creativity only because that doesn't fit one's narrowed down idea on the genre.

Aliens in steampunk. You can make a case against it, even if it isn't exactly right. Arguing that a piece of technology which was long available by the chosen time period should not be used due to arbitrary reasons? That's pretty hard to justify. Especially when introducing things which were never even thought about back then.
As I said about the only way steam engines can propel aircraft if they are the steam equivalent of turboprops.

Yes, this is subjective. You're dealing with the subjective imagination and creativity of an entire group of people, and the majority in the group thinks that martians and jet engines don't match up with their vision of this world. At the end of the day, I'm gonna cite Democracy. Strike a compromise for now, so as to not ruin the immersion of your fellow RP'ers. Down the road, as the story (and the technology) advances, I'm open to anything. For now, though, please keep it in line with the stereotype that is upheld by your fellow players. Canvas biplanes, steamboats, zeppelins, souped-up blunderbusses and rifles.

If what you want from an RP is aliens and jets right off the bat, go make a Forbidden Planet/Barbarella RP.

You can keep arguing, but that's the verdict of both the GM, CoGM, and of your fellow player. I say, you can work them in down the line (preferably not in Africa or the New World), but not now. You gonna take it or leave it?
