Pledge your lives to the Watch!

Weird Introduction Thing

Hello one and all, I am usually most active in the ParadoxInteractive Forums, where many good games have been held, however I wish to start out on my own and while stats and orders are the name of the game in that type of place, here I will rely mostly on Roleplay. My own creativity will be used for this project, but this is mostly a sandbox game and players will be guided, but are allowed to create their own stories and interact with mine in various ways.

How this will work is that I will control almost all NPCs, especially at the start of the game, and players will be allowed to make 1-2 of their own characters and possibly 3 if there is enough who wish for it. The setting will take place far and before the timeline of the books. It is 2210 CA, The Starks hold majority dominion over the North however the Ironborn are rooted deep into Cape Kraken and Sea Dragon point, and might never dislodge from Bear Island. The Wall doesn't have an exact leg in this dispute, as the Boltons still control much of the eastern side of the north, allowing the Night's Watch to have some neutrality when it comes to politics above the neck. Trade with each of these three will greatly impact supplies, especially during winter.

The realms south of the neck shouldn't be of major concern however the Arryns are at war with the Starks who presently hold the Three Sisters. Other than that I will be crafting a map, a base-knowledge for all players, but only those in particular avenues for information will be revealed as to the happenings of border changes and the like. This is mostly because this game is set in the wall, and shall be rather restricted to the wall, but don't expect all the roleplaying to be boring-old watching as the snow falls.

The Order Itself

It's time to talk extensively about the main core, or rather chunk of the game. The Watch is a meritocracy, anyone from high or low can earn a station in the Watch and it is often said that the Watch makes use of every man. If anyone isn't exactly sure what the Night's Watch is about, you can read this and speaking of URLs, this is a handy allocation of all the houses you could hail from, but I will be double-checking to see if they fit in the timeline. The game will start in Eastwatch-by-the-Sea, all players will have at least one character in the new batch of recruits, who will be going about their training and towards their eventual vows.

Keep in mind that not all recruits are noblemen, and having preestablished relationships(from your own group of characters or with others) will allow things to start off more smoothly I feel. Since this is Westeros, everyone is going to have a grudge, so feel free to add layers to your PCs by having preexisting hatred(for ex: someone from the Vale dislikes a Stark Bannermen because of the recent war over the waters). Sadly the Watch is a purely male-order, but as long as you have one character as a Crow, I will allow exceptions for females in certain positions.

There are Four Classes(technically five counting recruits) in the game. The Stewards, Rangers, Builders, and Officers who specifically are unobtainable in the beginning.

Stewards are the lifeblood of The Watch, and are a core part of the administration. They are the largest class so they have the most sub-classes. They are as follows~

The Ranger Order is probably the most prestigious of the three, and for good reason. They patrol the haunted forest and while every man of the wall stand's watch over it, the Rangers are those that actively battle the wildings. Rangers are defined by experience, the more missions you have been on, the more respected and valued you are. The different classes are mostly separated from their fighting styles, and which the specific Castle wishes to employ. The Ranger Order is the place where burglars and thieves are not very well trusted, and noblemen have a foot up on any of their brothers(for their training and well-regard).

Finally the Builders, who are responsible for maintaining the Wall, the castles, and the equipment. They provide masons, carpenters, miners, and woodsmen. The Nightfort is the largest castle, as such requires the most builders, but Eastwatch comes in second for this because of a very unique standing and that is: Ships. All sailors from the Eastwatch are defined in the Builder order, for they craft the ships and so they are the ones who sail them.

So the obvious choice I would say is to be a Ranger, but that's not the whole story, as we need an equal and good cast of characters. Stewards will be the only ones who will have access to information happening outside of Eastwatch, and will have to navigate the various political traps and struggles in the Watch and Below. The Rangers will have the most contact with the wildings and to venture outside of Watch-controlled lands you must have a Ranger with your squad, Rangers will be the best at fighting naturally and should usually be the heads of operations.. Although no Wilding locations or settlements are known from the beginning and Stewards are a must to charter lands and locations. Builders have interesting opportunities since they can sail and many stories can come simply from that, but they can also establish new settlements and even shore up abandoned castles.

Speaking of all this traveling, I'd like to unveil the map-

The Castles

From West to East-

  • Westwatch-by-the-Bridge
  • Shadow Tower
  • Sentinel Stand(Abadoned)
  • Greygaurd
  • Stonedoor(Abandoned)
  • Hoarfrost Hill
  • Icemark
  • The Nightfort
  • Deeplake(Abandoned)
  • Snowgate
  • Castle Black
  • Oakenshield
  • Woodswatch-by-the-pool
  • Sable Hall(abandoned)
  • Rimegate
  • Long Barrow(Abandoned)
  • Torches
  • Greenguard(abandoned)
  • Eastwatch-by-the-Sea

So that's my thing. I do not actually know if there is any interest in this roleplay. It again will be centered heavily on characters with a subtle story going on in the background. Players will interact with each other and my various NPCs, and can stick in Eastwatch, or eventually go off. There will be many events for everyone or some few, like before the game officially begins I would like a first day's dinner in honor of all the noble recruits(if there are any!) in the Shieldhall at Castle Black. If anyone has any ideas I would be welcome to have them, I know this post may seem long in some areas and too small in others, but this is me trying to explain an idea I've had for a while in a spur of the moment.

Alright! A good little batch this seems, I will begin writing and editing the start of the official page. I intend to recruit for the entirety of this game, to keep it living and breathing, but don't worry I have a plan for how I wish the story to play out. Meanwhile, you folks can post your character sheets here. I wish for them to be laid out like this:

Name:(Lowborn characters do not require a last name, and if highborn you do not need to be from one of the main houses, although Knightly houses are certainly less prestigious.)
Gender: (Everyone should have at least one male character-seeing as they are the only ones actually allowed to be apart of the order-, at the start that is.)
Age: (Anyone and everyone can join the Watch! At any age, although, I would bar children under Thirteen.)
Background: (Your reasoning for joining the watch, whether you were a thief or it was voluntary, this part should be thought on for it will characterize how the NPCs will treat you.)
Weapon of Choice: (An important part about being a Brother is knowing how to fight. This can be your future weapon or present.)
Biography. (Anything else that you wish to add. Quirks, facial features, scars, etc. Anything that makes your character distinct and unique should be added, I don't exactly need to know that they have two feet, but if they have none, well that's certainly something to add.)

I would recommend, although it isn't necessary, that a picture to accompany the sheet will allow other players to recognize your posts. It's a small detail, but I do truly think it helps. An appendix for your 'crucial' posts could also be added, and anything that you think I missed in your character sheet is of course welcome. If anyone has a suggestion on the game, please bring it up now. This is a game of exploration, so some things will be hidden at the start, and maybe some new secrets may be uncovered as well. You are working together with your brothers, so it is important not to be overtly hostile without reason(there are plenty of reasons, mind you.)

I will be periodically releasing my own NPC character-sheets before the start of the game, which I expect will be within the week.

Name: Commander of Eastwatch-By-The-Sea Rodrik Flint
Gender: Male
Age: 59
Background: Rodrik was the second son to the former lord of the Wolf's Den. He joined when his family was their most prosperous, and was given command soon after.
Weapon of Choice: An old Ice-Axe used by Rodrik when he was once a ranger. He famously climbed the length of the wall to escape a pack of wildings with it, using nothing else, or so the legends say.
Biography: Being the second son Rodrik was free to pursue his goals and hunger for adventure consumed him. He would always be the vassal to his older brother, so he set off to the Watch to be given his own command and station away from this life. Seeing as House Flint of the Wolf's Den is now largely destroyed, their castle even belonging to the Locke's now, he seems to have surpassed his family and even escaped their doom. Rodrik is a rather stoic and well-known figure around the Watch, many other commanders respecting his counsel and judgement. This made it a surprise however when the last Lord Commander was killed, Rodrik was not elected. Seeing his peers as lessers now, he has grown to a much more selfish man and is even connected to the recent and disastrous destruction of the Greenguard Watch. He mostly allows his chosen captains to manage the day-to-day, and its a rare sight for a recruit to ever see Rodrik out on the yard.. Especially on one of this 'good' days.

Despite the rather harsh appearance in recent times(both physically and in the freak anger tantrums he has every other week), his men respect him and there is a forming old guard around the controversial man. On one hand he has the experience and leadership prowess to make sure no one can challenge him, but on the other, Eastwatch is not in very high regard as of late.. Their station has been decayed by not a change in their behavior, but rather an unchange. The haunted forest encroaches the walls, their navy sits dry-docked indefinitely, and the eastern stronghold seems to be losing its grasp and keeping safe the wall.. So much so, that taxes and local villages have both decreased(from Wilding raiders that have gotten south), hurting Eastwatch's security. It will take some new ideas and new blood to keep Eastwatch from being another Broken Shield of the Nineteen.

Just double checking, but since this is CA, it is before the rise of the Targaryan Dynasty, right?

CA is Circa Aegon, which means before Aegon's Landing. So yes, this is during the era of Hundred Kings, so likely hood is that if one of you is a westerman and the other is a Reachman, you're from different kingdoms, etc.. This will play in to the Watch regardless, but I hope some of you take this concept for your own. Something personal came up that restricted me from thinking more, but I will post an extra round of characters today.

My deepest apologies, I had a matter to attend to. I'll show you three characters to make up for my lost time.

Name: Master of Arms Geralt Glover
Gender: Male
Age: 44
Background: Cast aside for his brutality
Weapon of Choice: Dagger(dual-handed)
Biography: Once the Master of Deepwood Motte, Geralt was a short-time lord and did not last long. He ruled with an ironfist, as the Glovers are won't to do, but he perhaps took his banner a little too seriously. He would have shields with iron gauntlets attached to them, and any thief who was found was cast into the gauntlet, making it whole, and taking their hand in the process. One too many men and one of them happened to be the son of a Stark branch family. Rather than risk a war, his own family cast him out and sent him to the wall. He is a paranoid and touchy man, and not many of even the most experienced rangers like to spend much time with him.

Name: Little Tom(Right)
Gender: Male
Age: 28
Background: A peasant donated to the watch
Weapon of Choice: Great-Hammer
Biography: Little Tom was born a Mole, in molestown. They called his mother Fat Bertha and said she mated with giants, explaining his huge size. He was often picked on and had perhaps been the only man in Eastwatch who had been transferred to all the castles along the wall. All the commanders wanted his size, to be a great ranger, their secret tool. Sadly this was not to be, he was no great warrior and was a bit of a craven. Not mentioning his Oafishness, he turned out to be a rather terrible brother.

Name: Ser Rickon Ryswell
Gender: Male
Age: 35
Background: Noble Volunteer
Weapon of Choice: Longsword
Biography: Being a Ryswell, it was only obvious Rickon would turn out to be Master of the Stable. He often gets in the business of other Stewards, but the entire garrison would say Rickon is an alright man, if only for his treatment of Little Tom. Tom was cast aside, and Eastwatch was last on his life of all the wall. They said that if he didn't find a Watch to take him, he would have to patrol the wall forever, alone. Rickon made sure to get in the head of the little, well, rather big lad. They became fast friends when Rickon showed him the Garrons they kept, and Tom often enjoys spending time there. They are both stewards and proud ones at that, and work to make the Watch as good as it can be. Rickon has always an ear to hear any brother's words, and can be found treating his little section of Eastwatch with the upmost care.
