(Repeated as reminder since it was a couple pages ago:)

Enough light from outside comes through the hole in the ceiling of this room to see fairly well. This chamber has partially collapsed: tall stone slabs that once supported the ceiling are now canted inward by the weight of the earth above and fallen debris is piled in the center of the room. It seems as if the entire chamber could collapse with the slightest disturbance.

In the rubble, barely visible, is the corner of what looks like a large stone chest..

When they entered the chamber Cedric started carefully poking around the rubble that was collapsed over top of the stone chest. The light coming from above was growing a bit dim and he realized it was later in the day than he had thought, but he wasn't ready to call it quits just yet. "What do you think? If we can move some of this off the top, maybe we can get it open?" Already he was picking up a few rocks and moving them out of the way.

Rockmar rushed over to help Cedric move the rocks and rubble from the chest. Some of the pieces were heavy and he had to put his should against them and push. Seeing how dark it was getting Rockmar commented, "We need to get this then hurry back to the village. Maybe the spear will help against the hound."

The work of clearing away enough rubble and debris from the lid of the stone chest took the group at least a quarter of an hour, but then the heavy lid could be lifted off. Within the chest, a dozen human skulls rest atop a hammered bronze shield, stylized with the image of a lion's head.

Tarquin occupied himself with eating the apple, seemingly disinterested in any possible plight the others might be in. "I hope they have found somdthing useful." The tall elf mumbled.

Jason embraced the old man's hand in a firm but friendly manner. "Gone huh? For a beast too?" He didn't sound concerned which might be strange to the old man. "Guess that means I need to stay for the night." Jason stood for a second to think. "Maybe I can help with this beast problem. You know anything about it? History of victims, when its active." Jason almost got carried away. "Wait. There a place I can rent a room for the night in this village?" Jason stared out as the sun began to fall. "A beast huh? Not the first thing I was hoping to hear about."

"With the beast roamin' round, Constable Leofwine has opened up the hall to anyone wants to stay there," Nothan said, pointing up the hill to the building where the others had stayed the previous night. As he does so, his shirt sleeve pulls up slightly showing that his arm is bandaged.

"The beast... well, it looks like some kind of hound, but too large... and unnatural red eyes that put fear into a man's heart," he shook his head, uneasy even at the memory of looking into the hound's eyes. And he didn't look like the sort of man that was easy to scare.

"It's killed 5 so far, all at night time...just rips them apart." He paused for a moment before continuing on. "Father Beacom says it won't stop until it slays every soul upon this Isle. A lot of folks are talking about packing up and leaving, but really got nowhere to go. If you and the others Lord Rolf sent think you can stop it, you'd have a lot of folks in your debt, myself included."

Rockmar took the shield from the chest. He slipped it on his arm to see how it felt. But he didn't use shields. he needed both hands to swing his great axe. He took the shield off and offered it to Cedric. "You can use the shield, right? I cannot. Take it."

"Now, everybody, we will have to hustle back to the village. Let us find Tarquin and Eve and move. Wimena, do you want me to carry your shield on the way back?"

Other than the skulls falling unceremoniously to the bottom of the stone chest, nothing bad happened as Rockmar took the shield. Cedric was happy enough to accept it. "A beautiful piece of work!" he exclaimed, running a hand over the lion's head as he examined it, but then admitted "I haven't trained much with a shield. June, would you like it?"

But at Rockmar's reminder that they needed to hustle, Cedric nodded. "Are Tarquin & Eve still exploring that western staircase?"

Eve was wondering what was taking them so long and went back inside. "Rockmar? Cedric? Wimena? Are you coming out? It's almost dark!" Eve was concerned more about the townspeople than their journey back to town.

She went further in towards the room that she and Tarquin had been in. She decided to see what was so interesting about that alter that he had been looking at. Once she got in there she looked around. She hadn't gotten much of a chance before with Taroyn showing up. There was a chest under the alter in the middle of the room. She looked at the alter and found it interesting. A large bear skull sat atop it.

The chest appeared to be pretty solid. As she approached it she felt some magic coming from inside of it.

(The alter/chest is one and the same. Something similar to this, except less fancy and with the bear skull on top:)

Upon closer inspection, the fanged skull appears to have served as a crude, but probably startling helm. Removing the heavy stone lid from the alter (at least without the aid of magic) is the work of at least two people...

"Yes, where are you?" Cedric called as he made his way back into the central hallway. Assuming she was down the opposite stairs, he made his was toward her, now carrying the lion-headed shield.

As Eve went to do his little scouting Tarquin chose to follow after her - just in case the woman would get herself in trouble, he did not much like people who got themselves in trouble if the one getting in trouble wasn't himself. When they arrived back to the room with the bear skull on the altar the tall elf tilted his head slightly. "Now, I would suggest we are very careful with that... No telling how many traps are rigged to that thing... Call me suspicious, but experience has taught me that places like this often have traps." Still he threw caution to the wind and casually picked up the skull, which he deduced had at least at some point been worn as a helmet. "A bit gaudy this thing, don't you think?"

Cedric descended the stairs and saw the elf holding the fanged bear skull, "Gaudy? I dunno. I think I might think twice if I saw you running at me wearing that."

"Stand back. I'm going to take the lid off." Eve chanted a spell and the heavy lid started to move slowly off and she waved her hand and as she did it set itself down a few feet away. She looked inside the chest and saw several human skulls possibly a dozen or so sitting on top of an enormous bear hide with leather thongs sewn into it. The cloak was radiating with magic. Eve moved the skulls and picked up the cloak carefully.

Eve held the cloak out and looked at it just as Cedric came in. "Cedric, take a look at what I found." She held it so both he and Tarquin could see it better. "It's magical. I can feel the magic on it. I've got no idea what it would do to the wearer though."

Rockmar breaks into a big grin when he sees the helmet. "That helmet is beautiful! Is anybody gonna wear it? Can I have it? yes yes.. pretty pretty helm. Please?"

When asked about the secret room, Rockmar continued, "It's getting dark fast. What do you think about returning to the village now. The people will need out help. Then tomorrow at sunrise, we come back here and check out the secret room. Sound good?"

Tarquin rolled his eyes and offered the skull towards Rockmar. "I'd be careful if I was you. It might well be cursed." He paused for a moment to examine the skull helm and then shook his head. "I don't sense it being cursed however." He added after a while and smirked. The tall elf turned his attention to Eve and reluctantly offered his hand towards her. "Maybe I can discern it's possible magical qualities?" He suggested politely.

Jason listened to the details Morgan gave. His face turning more serious as Nothan went on. When Jaon heard that all the attacks have been at night, he looked toward the sky. "I guess I better get ready for a fight then." Jason turned around and began to walk off. "Thanks for the information. I'll think of something."

"I didn't bring any medicinal herbs with me. Maybe someone here has some I can buy. Preferably ones that help the relax the muscles. I'll also need raw meat. I'm pretty sure I can find that." Jason continued to think about his plan. "I'm not beast hunter by any means. I am however, crazy enough to try."

Jason began 'exploring' the village. Hevwas looking for places that would seem like a good place to fight. He was also examining some of the many claw marks the beast had left behind. "Well it certainly wants them to know it hates them I guess."

Rockmar smiled as he put on his bear helmet. He looked at Wimena and growled like a bear at her. He then laughed. He growled at June and Eve next. He was going to have too much with his new helmet.

Eve was reluctant to hand the cloak to Tarquin. Underneath was Taroyn and he was dark and evil. What if she handed it to him and he used it to kill everyone. She walked over so he could touch it but she did not let go of it. "All I can sense from it is rage." she said to him. He picked up the fabric and the magic was palatable to him. She feigned distraction when Rockmar was playing around and pulled the cloak back and folded it and placed it into her bag.

"I think we need to leave and get back to the village as soon as possible. The sun is almost down as it is."

Tarquin rolled his eyes and smiled. "With that amount of rage I bet it could allow the wearer to fly in to a berserker rage of some kind. Like the barbarians of the plains tend to do on a whim." The tall elf gave Eve a strange, slightly puzzled look, like he was wondering what she was thinking before just shaking his head and smiling. "Agreed, we best be on our way. I'd hate to miss dinner and a chance to tell a few stories with the warmth of a fireplace to keep me company."

As Jason explored the village, he would find that it was not very large and most of it's population were farmers and fisherman, though there was a blacksmith, a weaver, and a carpenter. The houses mostly sat a short distance from the coast, although he did find a few places that may give a small advantage in a fight.

In the dimming light, the residents were hurrying to either barricade themselves and their animals in their homes for the night or to settle in at the great hall. The fact that Constable Leofwine and the adventurers had not yet returned making many of them nervous and speculation was running about if they had run into the beast!

"Don't stay out after dark!" someone warned Jason. "Best come into the hall!"

"I think it suits you," Cedric laughed, watching Rockmar's attempts at entertaining the women with the bear helm.

After Eve and June magicked the other members of the adventuring party across the pit trap and they re-emerged back outside the tomb, Cedric breathed in a few deep breaths of the cool and misty evening air and shuddered, his humor gone again. A crow sat on the limb of a tree nearby, cocking its head to look at them.

As they began their trek back, he looked at the others. "Are we going to attempt to slay it tonight?"
