Which is useful, headcanon that is, as long as folks don't start arguing and disagreeing with the headcanon in a given story. I'm a fan of surprising competence from the Imperial Guard, especially with those players that worship the very ground their precious SPHESS MAHREENS walk on. Or anyone trumps them, really, its satisfying.

Indeed, just hearing tales of how the guard managed to lose millions of soldiers in meat grinders really is just annoying. I mean, an actually competent force would realise the futility of fighting meat grinders (especially against Orks or 'Nids) and instead just back off and use defesive tactics - as they should. But yeah, overall I like to think that 40K is in a dire need of some revamps. Like actually keeping track of how many SPHESS MAHREENS there are in the galaxy - 'cause a million isn't enough.

Some of the numbers like that I am actively ignoring and I think pretty much anyone with half a brain ignores as well. There are a damn sight more than a million marines at this point, I'd wager, between the various foundings and such. Likewise, I doubt millions of soldiers are lost on a single battle's meatgrinder. Maybe if the entire system is one glorified meatgrinder, it makes a bit more sense, but on one battle? Nah, not happening. In other news, eager to see how natsu handles our rather unconventional squad layout so far. Least we have a Sergeant, was half expecting that to not be filled before the campaign started, haha.

Yeah, just in general it makes far more sense to just have the guard be as or more competent than a normal modern army, and yeah it simply makes sense for their to be more than a million marines.

Though yeah, pretty interesting squad we have:
1 Psyker
1 Heavy
1 Sargent
1 Commissar
and then I think 2 comrades, due to psyker and commissar maybe not getting them.

Psykers get comrades, only Stormtroopers and Commissars dont get comrades, if memory serves. So three comrades and four PC's. And not a big mix, all things considered.

Yeah. I think we'll end up being a pretty solid squad overall. The guy who's making the Commissar said he wanted him to be more of a support style character, so that will help us I guess - if you die your comrade can die in order to bring you back.

I saw that, granted, my comrade is also possibly the only thing between a minor perils roll and daemons vomiting everywhere oh god why. But hey, at least comrades are replaceable! And its good to have a commissar ready to also BLAM my psyker in case if shenanigans, I suppose. But hey, odds of perils should be relatively slim, long as I aint pushing powers all the damn time. Again.

You're a psyker. With great power comes great warp horrors. But yeh, comrades are there really more for flavour since they die so damn easily (or at least mine always do). Yeah... pushing powers is a sure way to die or be BLAM'd or both. But its worth it mostly.

"With great power...comes great OH BY THE EMPEROR WHAT IS THAT?"

I see Comrades as kind of just extensions of characters for Only War, some NPCing goodness if the extra dialogue is desired, some extra abilities and meat shields to cover the fact that the Guard can suffer some pretty rough attrition depending on the regiment, mission, and what they're facing. But hey, in a pinch, at least pushing the power can at least take whatever is warranting the power upgrade with you. Either from the power, or the aftermath of your rather messy demise.

That's honestly probably one of the better uses of them, some people don't use them in the least until they are constantly reminded to by the GM. Which can be, quite annoying. But yeah, given the attrition we will likely face on this front, I imagine comrades and maybe PCs will die somewhat frequently.

Well, no point just having them standing there, being bullet sponges. I mean, they might make halfway decent ones, but in the grand scheme of things, ordering them to go about doing things might work a lot better. Like reloading your heavy weapon for you, or blamming the psyker to prevent unusually bad perils of the warp. And I am fully expecting and prepared to have to roll up new characters every now and again, its all part of the casualities of war.

Given my specialisation at the time, tends to be directly related to how much I use my comrade. If, like in this case, I need someone to load (but not brace) the heavy weapon - they see a lot of use. But if I play something completely self sufficient like a weapons specialist, then they tend to just act as fire support and a source of more bullets/lasers/plasma/things that go boom.

Yeah, I have a few characters in reserve. I was thinking of having an abhuman up next in case of accidental death of my current guy. Probably an Ogryn because I loathe Ratlings...
