So, suppose you come up with a story setting. It has several elements that you think mesh together really well, you have character traits that you think could produce some interesting situations, and overall you think that you can make some well-thought out stories in this setting.

Now suppose you come across a long-running book series that you have never read, or even really knew existed, but whose setting is nearly identical to what you came up with. And by identical I mean many people would think that you had simply copied this other author.

Would you still use what you came up with, or would you scrap it entirely?

Hard choice. There's no such thing as an original idea to be blunt. Avatar the movie was basically pocohantas in space, yet I remember a lady got done for plagiarism of the Harry Potter books by having a similar story.

Even my last rp design where people are in the future and lost the ability to reproduce turns out to be similar to a very obscure anime. Never seen it, but I was like wow.

I suppose it comes down to how you write it. If it's very similar to the point where things are the same, then maybe twist some elements a little bit.

Neither.

Go look at some other books, movies, etc. Find some sorta-similar ideas or ideas that you like.

Mix the original idea and everything around with the new ingredients to become something new.

None of my ideas, however 'original', are original. None of the names, none of the appearances, nothing. And, I think, nothing ever really is 'original.' It's all inspired or from somewhere.

You can say, hey, this roleplay/story is an AU of this really long-standing book series.

I have been working at my new job for the last two weeks now and am starting another one tomorrow. The one I've been at, I hate it. I wanna quit. I'm really thinking on it. The new job I'll be starting, the GM really wants me to work for them. She and I are both equally excited for me to join. She likes my previous work history and thinks I'll be a good fit for the crew! ^^ Wendy's has just been stressing me the hell out. I have had this friggin' eye twitch for the last week and a half since I started the dang job.. I'm a cashier, there. Normally I'd be the one making people's food. I had fun working at Panera Bread, when I was working there. I think I'll enjoy working at Five Guys Burgers, just the same. :)
