He just doesn't have access to those spells. He can prepare any spells he wants, but he doesn't have direct access to them when he expends them.

ah.. I was reading Temple of Elemental Evil and the main character had to use his book to prepare spells daily... guess that changed.. Ah, well. Better that way anyways!

I also though that they were use to speed up casting time by recording it as well as the conjuration or transmutation circle and that way a caster does not need to weave the signs or draw/summon a glyph or rune.. just a thought.@VKAllen
