Looking for a group of adventurers for a D&D campaign. I'm familiar with DMing, though I haven't done too much of it, and I prefer the "Theatre of the Mind" style play. For posting order, I'll post descriptions and any reactions to player actions, then everyone else posts once. I don't have a ton of free time (school, work, other work), but I can garuntee that I'll be on every weekday at least an hour, and maybe a few hours on weekends (that's when the majority of my classes are). Races and Classes can be Homebrew, but PM me the source for any HB classes so I can review it (and all Homebrew classes need to be 5E homebrews, just for simplicity's sake). For CSs, I'll make an off-topic thread, so just use Myth Weaver and link the sheet, please.

This campaign is one I started with some friends, but didn't get far. Here's my intro:

Ages had gone by since the King had talked to the people. Guards started doubling their posts; getting more aggressive. Someone's gotta do something. Nobody knows what, though. All of Krazias is holding her breath, wondering what goes on behind the slowly-rusting doors of the King's Castle while the rest of her slowly decays into chaos.

It's not much, but the campaign is kinda generic in type: get from an outskirt town to the Central Kingdom's castle and figure out what's going on with the King. I'll work on the intro more as I am able.

Why are you specifying an edition if you're not actually going to use the rules?

@Zobozun I am going to use the rules. I'm only not using the combat rules, unless I'm misunderstanding your question. And secondly to unify character sheets.

I say this as someone who has played Dungeons and Dragons since he was 10.

If you want freeform combat, run a freeform game. Combat is part and parcel of the D&D rules.

@clanjos well, I'd still like to unify what character sheets are used for character balance purposes. I'll edit the title to not have a specific edition.

Balance is already tossed out the moment you toss out the biggest aspect of D&D, the combat minigame that all the classes are designed around.

Ok, so I guess my experience with TotM is very differently than what you all are describing. All I'm saying is that there isn't any grids or visuals. There is still rolling to attack, for damage, for abilities, etc. There is still combat, just not grid-and-figurine style.

Your post said you're not gonna use the combat rules which can only be read as exactly that, not that you're gonna do some weird homebrew to have combat work with abstract distances and positioning.

And even then why not just actually use a system whose combat is actually suited to "Theater of the mind" type play? I mean come on dude, have you tried not playing D&D?
