I thiiiiink I've lost interested in this. I might not be able to keep up with it, anyhow, since I'm probably not going to have computer access starting Monday.
@Blue Demon Position 3 or 4. I don't particularly care as long as I have a spot. Do you want me to specify? Also is there anything else I need to show? I have an idea in my head for this and just kept writing off and on to get it. I like it but I'm not sure how coherent it came out.
----- From the records of a gene-therapy and cloning researcher, a Doctor Connor Roswin:
Summary of Report 23, BN3-1307. This is my first report on Subject 1307. Though only in the early stages of childhood he has already mastered reading and writing. His understanding of morals is curious as the other children from this batch seem to have developed more violent and unrestrained tendencies while 1307 exhibits a dislike to fight and regards the pictures of war we have shown him with great disdain. While the other children may make for powerful soldiers in the future I have concluded that this batch's emotional stability is a failure. We'll have to take precautions to rectify that. It is very likely that 1307 would be suitable to a support tactician role with his ability to grasp situations quickly and provide solutions. His file determines ---(Data Corruption Detected, highlighting legible information.)--- 1307 hails from ----- cold and harsh ---.
Summary of Report 103, BN3-1307. This batch took very well to fighting tactics and martial arts. It would seem that despite various errors in our theories the gene therapy has vastly improved reflex time, understanding and recovery speed. After purposeful infliction of harm on subject 1307 the time it took for recovery was vastly shorter than any normally born human. The results were so astounding that the math was slightly difficult to record. It took him a day to recover what would take someone like myself several months. The project head is interested in following through with more research. Doctor ---(Data Corruption Detected, highlighting legible information.)--- wants to improve on the healing factor of future batches by -------- ---- 1307 shows signs of distrust and distress --- shows contempt of other subjects in the batch when ------ --- 1307 is showing his prime. His green eyes are brighter than any I've seen and show his intelligence. Most of the batch share a strong face and perfectly sculpted body. Their genes were arranged so that blond hair and blue eyes would be common so 1307's eyes are a rarity in the mix.
Summary of Report 213, BN3-Conclusion. If I had recorded this by video you would have been able to see my disappointment. After years of watching over the youth of gene-batch BN3 I am sad to declare this as my concluding report of its subjects. The head of ---(Data Corruption Detected, highlighting legible information.)--- has terminated the project. This was the result of last month's report. Cell degeneration was detected in the physical examination among every subject of the batch. Their bodies seem to be overpowering themselves. Their strong muscles overpower their weakening frame that ----- 1352 died in the most recent activities from a simple exercise that should have ----- ----- Corporation has determined the remainder of batch BN3 will be dumped as per usual arrangement. I'll be taking some leave time. I've seen what happens next and it's never pretty. ----------------
I was 1307. This is my personal mission and record from my thoughts and ideas after I escaped death on a planet of wrecks and trash.
They gave us all numbers. They scrubbed us out when they didn't like what happened. Defective products weren't worth keeping around. I'm not a number among many anymore. From what I know of my brothers they are gone now. In honor of them I will take the most realistic name I can to represent us all. I am Benjamin Osev. I will live because my brothers and sisters did not. I will spit in the face of the corporate filth that has lain waste to so many lives, created, spawned, found, thrown away. It doesn't matter where I am now. I will live long enough to see a justification even if I have to be the justice. My body, though broken is a bed of chaos sown with power. I have strengths I can use. They can't stop me so long as I play on them.
I can't stop my muscles from tearing when I exert myself, the hurt never goes away and these damn genes won't let the pain receptors die. I've tried to study what it is that's happening and understanding has come slowly. Their theories unbalanced my genes. Though I suffer this I am committed to no longer complaining. My system is stable and I can heal through wounds that would normally kill a regular man. I've never been hit in the heart or brain and have absolutely no intention of letting it happen. If I'm lucky my genes will remain stable and I won't need treatment to keep my vital organs from inadvertently destroying themselves. When I get more money I'll have to get some these E-gen treatments I keep hearing about, the kind of advanced stuff used to remove cancer and fix failing organs. Ridiculously expensive but if I want to be around long enough to crush an empire that's my ticket.
My idea to remedy my issues with moving are to get a light exo-suit. Nothing fancy or military-grade but enough of a frame to give me better mobility and make up for my handicaps. I'll have to tread carefully. In my prime I could bend steel, my brothers even made a game of it. These days I might be able to do it right before my arm unhinges itself from the rest of my body.
Joining the military will be a step in the right direction. Providing proper background will be a more difficult challenge but I think I'll manage. After all I've been through they'll see my value for certain.
Equipment: Benny Osev uses heavier armor supported by a light exo-suit frame to make up for his lack of quick movements, sure he has awesome reflexes but should he use them he'd likely strain his body too much to be of optimal use in a fight. His suit is tinted a dark blue, comes with a blast helmet, magnetized boots and is sealable for out of ship spacewalking. He excels in low gravity situations where the wear on his muscles is limited. The armor is also equipped with a wrist mounted fusion cutter for convenience in cutting through objects and opening doors as an additional option to use. Benny prefers his miniaturized arc caster for its versatility in tight quarters and amongst friendlies. It is a shotgun-sized weapon with a battery fixed to the butt and four directing prongs spread from the end. The advanced targeting system allows it to fire a lightning arc that can bend slightly to avoid allies and turn corners. It is exceptionally helpful against machines and causes very disruptive damage to most biological enemies. It is not instantly lethal like a lot of projectile weapons but can be channeled as a current into foes to first disable them before overwhelming them. Though terrifying in short bursts the battery drains fairly quickly so he carries two spares and if he uses it all he'll have to find a way to charge to batteries to keep it useful. It comes with a sling to connect it to the rigging on his armor. A backup is always on hand, a high-powered handgun for those situations when the arc gun just doesn't have enough juice left.
Appearance: Benny looks almost identical to the others from his batch, brawny, muscular, tall, strong jawed. They almost all have blond hair including Benny. The only exception seemed to be his radiant green eyes. Despite his deteriorating condition Benny is still brawny but his muscles look strange and out of place, unbalanced compared to his thinning form. He is exquisitely strong but it comes with a hard price.
The pain was so exquisite. The Daxon Corporation was generally very careful about the way they handled their subjects. A failed batch would be cleared out of a ward in a very efficient process before being systematically "terminated" in an efficient gas chamber and left to rot on an outer world amongst their other failed projects and filth. The only difference this time was an unlikely amount of luck. 1307's everything hurt. It stung to breathe especially. His toes were numb, having been crushed rolling amongst the debris in the corporate trash craft before being dumped out the refuse chute onto the barely livable moon of a planet. 1307 rolled over the heap of crap he had fortunately landed on and not under and wheezed. His breathing slowly regulated itself. Relaxing a little he laid back. Pain was coming back into his toes as the nerves forced themselves to heal. The only other competing feeling over the hurt right now was hunger. A high healing factor meant ridiculous metabolism. One of his legs bent awkwardly so he cracked in back into place. All he had left on him were his undergarments so as he stood upon his bare feet and meandered forward every stray piece of rusty metal wanted to cut him. 1307 slipped and rolled down the rest of the way to the bottom of the trash. Grabbing a makeshift crutch he pulled himself back up and kept moving forward into a small clearing, giving him some space to sit.
The next two days were spent rummaging amongst filth to survive. It wasn't easy and all he could think about was escape. That was until a visitor came on day three. It was a small personal craft, sleek but roomy enough for multiple people, shaped like a teardrop, colored black with white streaks. Only one man climbed out, a rebreather mask on. "Hey Doctor." 1307 greeted. "Here to finish what they started?" The wrinkly old man was puzzled but quickly smiled and gave a rebuttal. "No, 1307, I'm just on my vacation. I thought this place would be particularly pleasant this time of year. The aroma is fantastic." He jested. "Well it's good to see not everyone thinks I belong here." The thin air made 1307 feel light-headed as he kept speaking so he relaxed and listened. "I couldn't bear it. Standing by and watching more men I was responsible for when I could do something." Doctor Roswin surveyed the makeshift hovel. The few brothers that 1307 had found were laid to rest beneath the ground the very best he could in his condition. "A real something I did, indeed." He mourned sarcastically. "If I had just had the nerve to throw my weight around I could have saved them." "Doctor." 1307 wheezed. He leaned against his makeshift crutch as he forced himself to stand. "There was nothing you could have done. Had you stood up against them they may very well have buried you out here with us." He reassured him, however bleak it was. "They may be gone now, but their will lives in me. I saw their tortured faces and I knew them as closely as family could be described. I will remember them like no one else can." 1307 grimaced with pain as he moved closer to the Doctor. "Your presence means you hurt for them. It means you are not heartless and now you can stand against the corporation even if you have to do so in the darkness." "Thanks, 1307, I appreciate it. Come on, let's get you cleaned up. We'll have to do something about that name too." Doctor Roswin helped him into his craft, it was the opportune moment for his much needed leave.
Don't want to be that guy but I'm pretty sure the military wouldn't take someone that obviously disabled. It's a money thing. How would he even get through boot camp? He wouldn't be able to use his exo suit. Now, some kind of secret service might, depending on what he brings to the table. Or you could have him join before the full on deterioration hits him - in which case the military would be obligated to keep him on board and give him treatment.
The military wouldn't take the man on. Too many problems, that are too easily exploited. Simply put, the guy isn't tough, the guy isn't adaptable, and the guy needs special equipment in order to move like a normal soldier.
@NickTrano Your point makes a certain sense. I was trying to think of a way around it and the key might be through the help of Doctor Roswin. I certainly couldn't excuse the truth there but if he were given a treatment to alleviate the severe downsides from Roswin he might be able to manage.
@WilsonTurner I agree with the last part but if you understand him the way I have imagined you'd think different in terms of tough and there's been no action to determine that he's not resourceful. This guy can survive and recover from wounds that would cripple and kill others. An unrestrained punch could cause him to break another man, though he'd probably break his own arm in the process.
I didn't share a combat scenario so judging adaptability even with the circumstances is jumping the gun.
Benny might rather deserve the spotlight in another story but I'm curious what Blue Demon thinks. I wanted something stranger than a general soldier so if he's declined I could mess with a token alien character.
