Revo Byrd | 16 | Male
Appearance:Revo, despite being a Malfunction, looks just like any other sixteen year old guy out there. He stands at five foot eight inches, weighs about a buck forty, and has a rather average build. His dark skin is mostly unblemished, with just a touch of acne across his forehead, just beneath his hairline. He keeps his hair cut tight, almost down to the scalp. Shaving hasn’t yet become a necessity since the only bit of facial hair that has actually grown in is the beginning of a struggling moustache of which he is oh-so-proud. His hair and eyes are both the same dark shade of brown. His teeth, while mostly clean, do have a slight yellow tint to them.
Powers:TELEPATHY (Extrasensory Perception): Revo is capable of a rather interesting form of telepathy. The mutation affected the way his brain handles thoughts, somehow allowing him to transmit them as if they were radio signals. Now, quite frankly, this alone does absolutely nothing.
However, should he do this while making physical contact with a person, an impulse will instead hop into the them, jumping its way up to the brain. After it is processed, the brain will become receptive to Revo’s signals. As long as he remains within range, any thought that he transmits starting with the original thought will be received and processed as if the receiver had thought of it themself.
For example, should Revo transmit something about cats, then that thought will spread out in a range, until it encounters a receiver for cats. So long as the original thought is included, Revo can use it to piggyback additional information. In the above example, should Revo transmit the thought about cats as well as a series of numbers, then the receiver will experience the thought about cats followed by a series of numbers suddenly popping into their head.
Weaknesses/Limitations:Revo’s telepathy isn’t going to make him a human party-line, unfortunately. There are a number of ‘flaws’ to it. Range is a big one. Now, that might sound a bit odd, considering the nature of the ability, and understandably so. Revo, under perfect conditions, should have about the reach of a standard broadcasting tower. Which is...quite impressive, really. But just because he CAN reach that far, doesn’t mean that he should. Maintaining the signal takes quite a toll on the kid, and the farther he tries to reach, the more he has to strain. Long distances will leave him mentally exhausted, with a nasty headache ready to pounce at any moment. Most distances out of eyesight will leave him with a rather disgusting nosebleed as well, which...just has to be GREAT for the body.
Transmissions also require Revo to intensely focus on what he’s doing. So he tends to completely zone out, coming to a complete stop and becoming more or less dead to the world. Anything that might disrupt his concentration (physically agitating him, loud noises, bright lights, etc.) will cause him to lose the signal and become rather disoriented.
He’s quite vulnerable to mental-based attacks, particularly if he’s trying to transmit. A bad enough attack could cause some significant damage, and if he were to be transmitting, may send a rather nasty feedback to the receiver.
Personality:Revo doesn’t tend to make a big impression on people: it’s quite the opposite, really. He usually ends up making himself seem smaller. Head down, eyes to the ground, shoulders slumped...anything that might dim his presence, he’s doing it. Quite frankly, the guy’s a bit of a coward. He’s terrified by a lot of things, social situations being a big one. So he’s a bit jumpy and nervous most of the time. But that’s all the name of the game. See, your brave folks? Your outgoing folks? They’re the ones that draw waaay too much attention. And they’re the ones that die first. And dying is not something Revo really wants to do anytime soon. He’s a survivor. And he’s going to survive.
Now, with that being said, it’s probably pretty easy to see that he’s probably not the most sociable guy around. Not to say that Revo’s going to straight up ignore somebody if they’re trying to speak to him. He’ll try to carry a conversation to the best of his ability but...he’s just not that proficient at it. And as for starting one...not likely. Not impossible, just not likely.
But despite his odd, cowardish personality, Revo is a good kid at heart with a strong sense of duty. He might not want to do something, might be absolutely terrified to the bone about doing something, but if he said he’d do it, then he’ll do it. Just don’t expect him to play the hero.
Heroes always die.
Backstory:Born and raised in St. John’s of what used to be Newfoundland, Canada (now simply apart of District Three). Revo spent the majority of his life in a group home. His father, a fisherman, was lost at sea shortly before the boy’s birth, and his mother passed away of illness a few short years after. And with no other immediate relatives, he was taken in as a ward of the state.
The group home was alright. The other kids were nice enough, and the caretakers were kind. But it wasn’t a family. Not a real one. But it was all he had. Revo was never placed into an actual foster home for more than a few months here or there. Time and time again, Revo returned to the group home. And time and time again, he watched the other children be taken away, to find their ‘forever homes.’
Perhaps that’s why he ran away.
At the young age of nine, Revo ended up leaving the group home. The little kid was determined that he could make it out in the harsh world. Maybe he’d even find his father. He didn’t make it far. One night. He spent one night on the streets before he was ready to go back. Might have even done it if he hadn’t been approached by the Thrashers.
The Thrashers were a small time gang of misfit teens that caused trouble in St. John’s. Revo was warned by the caretakers to avoid them any time he left the home to go play. Bad news, they called them. And he normally listened but… on the day he was slinking back home, one of the Thrashers stopped him. Said he looked bummed and asked what was wrong. So little orphan Revo just spilled the beans. Something he said must have touched the kid, because he went to speak with his buddies, and when he came back, he offered to let Revo ride with them out West. They were heading to New Toronto to raise some hell. Suggested that maybe he could find a lead about his pops there.
Revo, being a naive little kid, agreed.
And so he left.
Obviously, he didn’t find anything out regarding his father in the city. But he did find the next best thing: a family. There was a bigger operation of the Thrashers working out in New Toronto. They took the kid in. Gave him a place to stay, some food to eat, and some work to do. Was it all entirely legal? Nah. But they never had the kid kill anybody so...that was a plus.
An older kid that went by Slappy took Revo under his wing. He showed him the ropes, the ins and outs of Thrasher life, how not to get busted by the cops. All was going pretty well...and for a few years...things really seemed to be turning up groovy for the kid.
But then everything was shattered. Slappy was picked up by the authorities for slinging dope. Which was bad enough. But as it turns out...he was also a Malfunction. Slappy was hauled away and the police busted the Thrashers’ compound. A bunch of the leadership were taken away for their involvement in the drug running operation. A couple of additional Mals were discovered in the ranks. And Revo?
Revo ran.
It’s not really sure what happened to Revo after that. He seemingly disappeared off the map until a couple years later, when he was picked up off a street corner in Winnipeg, in District Two, high out of his mind on some strong shit. While being processed by the authorities, they saw that he had never been tested for mutation.
He tested positive and one lotto later, he found himself shipped off to TEF-149.
Talents/Skills:Runner’s High: Revo’s not exactly the biggest or strongest guy around, so he’s done his fair share of running. From the law, from rival gangs, from dogs...really, if it’s angry and wants to hurt Revo, he’s probably run from it. And sure, he’s probably not the quickest around either, but hot damn if the boy ain’t got some stamina. If something bad is after him, he’ll run. And he’ll keep on running and running and running until it’s not after him anymore. Then he’ll run some more, just to be safe.
Quick Thinker: Revo’s pretty good for getting himself out of a jam. When shit hits the fan and he needs to get out quick, Revo’s usually good to come up with some kind of solution. It might not be the best, but it sure beats standing around with his thumb up his ass.
Quirks/Habits/Other: Revo doesn’t like to make eye contact when speaking to people. He’ll usually look just off to the side, or keep his eyes on the ground. Really, he’s got the shifty eyes, always looking around for the next thing to go wrong.
He’s also got a bit of a fondness for Rippers, a gaseous drug usually distributed in a small baggie that one rips open and inhales. It induces a similar effect as heroin, leaving abusers in a rather drowsy state following an intense feeling of pleasure.
TL/DR: A nervous, cowardly telepath orphan. Ran drugs for a street gang called the Thrashers until they were busted by the police. Tested positive after authorities found him strung out in an alley.
