Just noticed this one and got to thinking about making a character. I was thinking perhaps of making a character who is a noble and very much influenced by noble faction thinking that the old tradition no longer applies, and eve that they would be a better pick for captain. A good knight and all but that mindset would put them at odds with Fanilly Danbalion and somewhat foster a rivalry between them. Such a character I think would have great potential for later arcs and being a constant, close reminder of how nobility is starting to fracture on the issue.

That would be completely fine, and has a lot of potential to be interesting, so yeah!

@IceHeart It's not just Fanilly that would have problems with them.

@Doc Doctor: That still doesn't really explain how he managed to get from the other side of the world to what's basically fantasy Europe.

Then ask me what you want to know. I'm starting to get annoyed. You didn't put other people through this bullshit interrogation about their origins, even the ones with vaguer pasts than Zande. He goes where he wishes, on a whim, out of boredom. Wanted a breath of fresh air. That's just how he is.

If you don't like different character types, then just say so and spare me this garbage.

@Doc Doctor It's not a literal 'how', it's more a 'why is someone from south of the Sahara in the Low Countries', given the distance between them.

And... it's a highly renowned order of knights. Wouldn't they ask why you want to join? O_o

AKA: the reason you're being asked is because it's an incredibly remote place to come from to fit into a Fantasy-Europe Order of Knights and his previous backstory makes it strange that they would accept him if his whole reason to want in is 'I'm bored'.

Vagueness wasn't the problem, it was your character's backstory and nature specifically that needed a lot of justification in order to explain how he'd make his way into an order of knights.

Your character is a cannibal, headhunter, and mercenary trying to join a knight order. He has nothing to prove he is a knight, nothing that would remotely convince anyone he's a knight. Nothing had him become a knight. He's attempting to join an order of knights, and not doing a good job of hiding how he's a headhunter at all.

As long as we are on this whole thing, Doc that was kind of a rude response to hawk considering several people are trying to help out with your character since Vita has said it's not quite ready. No one is out to get you they are just trying to help fix any issues.@Doc Doctor@knighthawk

Personally, I feel that his past as a cannibal mercenary shouldn't have much bearing on how he gets in. Unless he was such a notorious douchebag that they've heard of him even in Thaln, or his jungle homeland is right next to Thaln (which would be a bit weird), they couldn't have possibly heard of him. Considering Themerlinhawk's character kind of walked down from the Velt foothills and petitioned to join, it seems like the only real requirements are being a capable fighter and/or being prepared to do good deeds.

That said, it still begs the question why a guy from some far off land decided to root up and join a distant knight order. If he just wanted to do good deeds, the Iron Rose knights can't possibly be the only people that help people in this whole wide world. I think people just think there should be a more specific reason for choosing to join the order than random whimsy.

Knighthood's also an important factor. Unless I missed something, @Themerlinhawk's character was already a knight?

@Raineh Daze

Go back and read my last few posts so you know what's actually going on and won't force me to continually repeat myself. I've already been at that point and fixed it.

@Tarquin

Ooh, you're right! I should have him join some order in fantasy Africa and play by my fucking self.

@VitaVitaAR

You, the same as the above. If winning a tournament, helping orphans, and saving a monk won't get him in, even after he lies about his past, then nothing will. How about fifteen monks? You accepted a 200 year old girl with a sword bigger than she is, but you get hung up on a foreigner? Sweet Christ.

@Themerlinhawk

I've explained every single little issue, from how he arrived to why he arrived to how he proved himself knightly enough to join, and now I have everyone asking me to say the same junk again and again. This running around in circles business is one of my peeves. I know Zande's motivations are unusual, but that's characterization for you. What else am I supposed to do, change his back story so he's white and grew up in fantasy Europe as a squire? While we're at it, I'll rename him Sir Coms Ishun and give him a fifty pound zweihander. Aye, aye, aye.

@Tarquin There's additionally the difference of basically getting a guy from the fringes of Scandinavia offering to join, say, the Knights Hospitaller compared to someone from Sub-Saharan Africa showing up to do it.

@Doc Doctor "I got on a boat and am bored" is not a sufficient explanation. Aimless violent wandering can only get you so far.

@Doc Doctor The point was you should give him a more specific motivation to join in.

But if you don't want to do that, that's your business.

I feel like I've been reasonable up to this point in trying to explain my reasons, and also the fact that you know... all the characters have to be knights.

But you're insisting on being rude and I'm done with it.

Your character is declined.

I'm so glad that you feel you're reasonable.

So if you don't agree with a character's personality, or if they come from too far away, pointlessly interrogate and belittle the one who plays said character for three days then when they finally express frustration at the misleading, circular questions, tell them to gtfo.

Go lick a cow. I wouldn't touch this with a thirty meter stick.

I told you exactly what the issues I had with the bio multiple times and at no point insulted you. It was only once you started being rude that I decided I was done with it.

But fine, good bye.

Let's move on.

You did nothing but tell me to redo the same thing over and over and complain more each time. Nothing I could have done short of rewriting the character would have pleased your puny sensibilities.

It was explained multiple times to you that I was looking for more justification for why he went so far and why he picked the Iron Rose Knights, and how he convinced others he was a knight.

But you've started being rude. That means we're done here. Goodbye, I hope you enjoy yourself elsewhere.

Moving on.

You simply don't get it. It's like you have a brick skull. I explained Zande's fancies, and that's just how he is unless you want us to change character personalities.

And I explained how he'd have joined, which included multiple acts of heroism. With no explanation short of "not good enough", you tell me to get the hell out.

You wonder why I'm rude when I have to deal with that? But I don't expect you to understand how making an actual, enjoyable character works anymore. If you don't accept foreigners into the Knights, then put it in the rules and save some other poor bloke three days. I wash my hands of this. Go on and keep telling me and everyone how I never adressed the problems astutely, and keep a blind eye to how little you helped to resolve said problem other than just telling me to redo it again and again.

@Doc Doctor You were being asked for a more compelling reason than a wave of the hand. Your only answer was extremely literal. Turning to ad hominem and accusations of not reading never addressed the underlying problem of picking an origin that needs a good explanation for such an extremely foreign character.

Just leave. This argument is pointless.

So, does anyone have any questions about the setting?

I'm happy to answer any that anyone might have.
