Lacain

His face twitching as his composure momentarily faltered, Lacain wrapped an arm around her comfortingly, leaving her to cry in the silence, such only interrupted by the sounds of fire and activity a ways away from them. After several minutes he placed his hands on her shoulders and took a step back from her, his eyes gazing down at her, intending to meet her own. "I am doing this, because it was what he asked me to do. It was one of his...let us call them, last wishes...." his voice trailed off as he said the last, but his expression did not waver, nor did his eyes from hers.

He brought her close and hugged her briefly and tightly before letting one arm fall away from her where it came to rest at her side. Eyes turning back to the burning fortress, before shifting to the horizon. “You're coming along,” he stated abruptly before, just as suddenly, transporting them elsewhere.

In a flash they reappeared elsewhere, far away from the town where he had lived all his life. Gritting his teeth slightly he glanced about before closing his eyes and expanding his senses from their immediate vicinity to several hundred miles in every direction, Lacain searched for what his master had told him would be near this place.

Around them trees swayed and creatures of the night made their presence known, though Lacain ignored them almost completely. He had transported them to the Forest of Daeszel, a place where few men went for fear of getting lost in the massive expanse of wilderness...or worse, being taken by the Shaeriel'm en who lived therein.

Yet, oddly, the mage showed no fear of either possibility.

Iylma'tria

When Lacain's arm draped over her she found that she couldn't stop herself from leaning more into his chest. Several minutes passed with little incident, filled with the soft sounds of her fragmented sobs and fires. When Lacain finally pulled back, Iylma'tria had calmed down just enough to meet his eyes when he spoke. At his explanation the woman bowed her head and and turned her face away from him. Of course it had been Teraem's last wish. It made sense to a certain degree. He was a private man, and likely didn't want what he'd worked on to fall into the wrong hands.

Caught off-guard by Lacain's hug, she barely had time to react to it before he spoke. She balked in confusion, "Wait, I don't understand, where are we--" Her words were cut off as they disappeared from where they had been standing.

When they reappeared her sentence completed, "--going?" The woman looked around for a few moments while Lacain did his work, eyes wide. After she realized where they were, she turned back to look at her friend, to see how he was faring. She couldn't remember a time where transporting two individuals even a few miles from one place to another had been easy for him. Now, now they were hundreds of miles from the university, and Lacain didn't even appear to have broken a sweat.

These woods were a dangerous sort. Filled with what many would call living trees which caused people to become lost as they moved around. In truth, however, it was a race of tree-like beings known as the Shaeriel'm en. They weren't particularly violent, unless one was a mage. They seemed to have a deep seeded hate for the wielders of magic. It was a curious thing indeed.

"Lacain, why are we here?" Iyl finally broke the silence between the two, her odd-colored eyes of blue and gold peering up at him with a curious gleam. The girl's face was tired, and streaked with dried tears. Had anyone else done this, she probably would have been pissed. Because it was Lacain, however, she knew there had to be a reason he brought her along.

There always was.

Lacain

His senses finally pinning down what he'd been searching for, Lacain's eyes opened and turned to the east, deeper into the forest. “You're here because I didn't want to leave you alone...” he said, though, what he didn't say was that it was because he didn't want to be alone either. “I'm here because Teraem asked me to retrieve something. I'm not sure exactly what it is, he only told me how to find it and that it was important that I do.” Letting out a breath he glanced down at her and smiled slightly, his expression seeming a bit more relaxed than it had been earlier. It appeared that being away from what had been his and Teraem's home had lightened the grip of sorrow on his heart.

“I'm going to move us again,” he said, before, just as suddenly as the first time, the two of them reappeared elsewhere.

As their surrounding formed around them, Lacain found that they stood before a cliff face. He frowned as he stared at the solid surface, before placing a hand upon it, “Ah,” he exclaimed quietly, the sound followed swiftly by branching paths of energy traversing from beneath his hand and across the surface of the stone. “Eket, Mi. Teraem va lae Siri naeanayue,” he chanted rhythmically, the words seeming to illicit shudders in the stone before them as well as cries from birds as they were disturbed from their slumber. Oddly, the forest, aside from those sounds, grew quiet.

Lacain, though aware of the occurrence, appeared to ignore it. However, Iyl's senses would notify her of the approach of some guests that were likely to intrude on their little outing. Similarly, Lacain's energies took note, weaving invisibly around them and forming an intangible net, before spreading out rapidly. Yet still, Lacain showed no signs of strain.

The wall before them began to shift. Dirt fell away, tiny pebbles rolled down it, bouncing off the protective barriers Lacain had created. The lines of power that originated where the young Archmage's hand sat began to become physical interruptions in the once smooth surface.

The cliff face was opening before them, albeit slowly.

The presence of what could only be Shaeriel'm en continued to near their own location.

Iylma'tria

Iylma'tria smiled somberly at Lacain's answer to her question. Though he was right in that she likely shouldn't have been left alone, the statement also made her feel weak and unwelcome. At the rest of his answer, she nodded. When he smiled at her in a more relaxed fashion she felt a pang of something in her chest. Her heart ached. In the surface of her mind she couldn't place why exactly it was happening, but some part of her deep inside was able to see what she wouldn't let herself. It could tell.

Grateful for the forewarning of their teleportation this time, Iyl pressed herself closer to Lacain just before they disappeared in an attempt to make it easier for him to move them. Granted, she was largely ignorant to the change in his power, and was unaware that the movement was unnecessary. Part of her knew he had changed in power, part of her could feel it, but due to her state of mind she was unable to really feel out what was truth and what wasn't.

One could say she was ignoring it as well, however, because it was similar to someone else's. Teraem. A man who was like a father to the woman. That's what it felt like. Maybe, just maybe if she ignored it, it would go away.

As they reappeared Iyl's eyes laid to rest on the cliff face a small frown of confusion on her face as she glanced back up at Lacain. She said nothing, however, instead choosing to watch the man as he wove his spellwork. After he recited his spell, Iyl was made aware of the sounds of the forest as they grew deathly silent.

A feeling of strong, dense mana washed over her after a few moments, causing her to glance up at her friend again. Though he wasn't outwardly reacting to the clearly encroaching threat, she could feel his energy as it wove itself around them in the form of a defensive barrier. Even this much wasn't enough to strain him.

As the wall began to crumble away, the silence in the forest gave way to gentle airy whispers. The threat was getting closer.

Shaeriel'm en were coming.

Almost as quickly as that realization occurred, a guttural roar pierced the trees closest to the two mages. A large creature which resembled a tree rose up just above the treeline. When its head emerged, it roared again. "Shit, Lacain. We've got company!" Iylma'tria's voice was a harsh whisper. She was at least trying not to break his concentration.

Just as she spoke the Shae's massive arm shot toward them at breakneck speed. "Shit!" Was the only word she could muster as her hands quickly rose above her head, palms open. A golden light followed her hands from the ground up into the air continuing up for about 50ft before the light shattered like glass, leaving in its place a massive wall of stone. The Shae's massive arm collided with the wall, but the wall didn't break. Part of Iyl's focus was put into the wall, she was keeping it together even though it should have broken under the stress of a single hit from the creature.

Undaunted by the unbroken wall, the creature started to punch it in rapid succession, earning an irritated grunt from Iyl as she kept the structure up. If she was being honest, she wasn't sure how long she would be able to keep the wall up.

She hoped it would be long enough.

Lacain

Noting the approach of the Shae, Lacain's attention suddenly split, the surface of stone before them continuing to split as the nature of his barrier altered, some of the threads of invisible energy that made it up extending outwards and weaving together. However, it appeared that the Shae was entirely aware of the construct as it beat away at the wall of stone that Iyl had thrown up. Smiling to himself at her efforts before the emotion drained from his face, replaced only by intense concentration.

While the Archmage weaved his spell, the Shae took action, its massive bear-like form beating against the stone wall for a moment wall before it fell back to all fours, paced back and forth and then ran fill tilt into the wall, vines and great bows of wood and thorns extended into horns on its head and gouged into the stone, before being retracted only for it to strike again. In a moment its strength doubled and the whispers from the forest intensified, somehow audible even above the roar of the male Shae and its violence.

Lacain frowned and let loose his spell, redirecting its focus to their surroundings. In an instant a strange red energy manifested around the pair, and then expanded into a surge of red wind, igniting the Shae and eliciting several psychic screams from the hidden females. However, despite the burning, which swiftly began to subside, the Shae redoubled their efforts to get at the two intruders.

Knowing he couldn't use the Language to further empower any spells without destabilizing the delicate one which was opening the door to the pathway before them, Lacain hoped that they could hold out till the gateway opened fully. Extending his free hand to Iyl's shoulder he allowed her access to some of the tremendous energies that his form now held, at least half of which was his own, the rest of which had a muddled signature. Only one part of that signature would be familiar to Iyl...and it was Teraem's.

Not all of him had died this night, some lived on through his pupil...and would continue to do so for ages to come.

Iylma'tria

Blow after blow struck the stone wall that Iyl was holding up with her mind. As the Shae struck the structure, the mage could feel it as though it was striking her to a much less powerful degree. It still hurt.

With her eyes closed she couldn't exactly see what Lacain was doing, but she could feel his mana as he wove it into a new spell and sent it in the direction of the Shae that were surrounding them from within the trees. The screams that echoed through her mind caused her to wince slightly. They really didn't like whatever it was he had just done.

When Lacain's hand touched her shoulder, her eyes opened wide in surprise as he shared his energy with her. She could feel every ounce of the newly gifted power as it poured over her body, and had he been able to face her, Lacain would have seen her eyes glowing brightly. There would be no mistaking the power she was housing. Teraem was there. He was with Lacain. And now, he was with her.

A smile formed on her lips, and the ghost of a laugh could be heard between the two mages as her right hand outstretched to her side, two fingers pointed toward the trees. "Come. Asrin." She whispered the words, and a gold light came swiftly through the trees. When it was close to the edge of the wall the gold light once again shattered like glass revealing a knight on horseback galloping to their side.

Asrin was a holy knight from times long ago, and Iylma'tria had summoned him to aid them. He would happily obey.

Lacain

Having seen it plenty, one might think that Lacain wasn't surprised when Iyl summoned a knight from nothing, but he was. While it was subdued, surprise washed over his features briefly, before his expression returned to one of concentration. Reaching out with his presence, Lacain augmented the knight, imbuing further enhanced strength to both knight and steed, before shielding them against a great many threats, all the while supplying energy to Iyl and opening what amounted to an escape route, if temporary as far as he was aware.

It wasn't enough. The female Shae, far more human in appearance than their male counterpart, emerged from the trees, appearing silently and without even magical warning. The lithe humanoid forms composed of wood, vines, leaves, and a great many other sorts of flora raised their arms in unison and unleashed their collective might on what was now a trio. The male retreated to avoid being collatoral of the tremendous wave of magical energy, which tore at and eroded the wall, which had been their defense, even slipping past it from different angles and eating at the barrier that Lacain had provided for them.

In response, the Archmage's eyes narrowed, he left a soothing spell within Iyl, and raised his palm, aiming it over her shoulder. Her wall shattered, the stone becoming energy even as Lacain's eyes lit up with blue and green and red. The energy that had been stone expanded horizontally around them, curving into an arching visible barrier of red and grey energy. Looking at it was like perceiving wavelengths of light which humans normally could not. It shimmered and wavered like air caught between winter and summer.

Meanwhile, Asrin's barriers defended him from the magical assault of the Shae and so he charged forth wielding his legendary blade, and swept it through the raising arms of the male who had begun to approach them once more. The Shae roared in fury as his arms were severed at the elbows followed by his chest earning a deep gash, which bled green, as the blade finished its arc.

Asrin turned his mount and charged one of the lithe females, who, startled, had no time to react before she was trampled to the forest floor.

Lacain smiled as the energies of the Shae attack diminished slightly. In response he poured energy into his already established spell and expanded it forwards and out, pushing so far back that his barrier almost struck the Shae themselves. His other hand remained on what had now become a hovering circle of stone, from which expanded tendrils of energy that continued to open the once hidden gate. It was almost fully open now, if only because Lacain was giving it far more energy than the spell would typically require...let alone allow. Of course, like every previous GrandArch, he had new tricks up his sleeve.

Iylma'tria

As Asrin severed the giant Shae's arms and slashed his chest, Iyl's features pulled into a smile of relief even while he trampled one of the female Shae to death with his horse.

For a moment, the mage glanced at her friend, a look of gratitude for what he had imbued her summon with before she closed her eyes and began a new spell.

Iylma'tria's arms stretched out to her sides, and the golden light that had surrounded everything else she'd called forth began to envelope her body. After a few moments passed, she began to rise into the air and the golden light began to move from her full form toward her back where it formed two large protrusions before shattering once again to reveal large feathered wings that beat down the air to keep her afloat.

At the same time the wings formed, a spear of gold and silver appeared in her hand, its length twice the size of her height. For a moment she smiled down at Lacain her eyes glowing brighter than ever, just before her wings propelled her forward and out of the barriers and toward the giant Shae.

The creature, still reeling from the damage that Asrin had dealt was unprepared for the female mage who, using the force of her speed, drove the spear through its chest eliciting a loud and pain-filled roar as he began to lose his shape.

She had successfully ended the male Shae's life, but the victory was a hollow one as she flew back within the protection of the barriers, narrowly avoiding several spells hurled at her from the female Shae.

The spear, which had still been lodged in the disintegrating male Shae shattered into golden light when it hit the ground, followed swiftly after by her newly formed wings as her feet safely met the ground, her eyes closed.

She'd done her part, at least for the moment.

Lacain

As Iyl sprung forth, wings and spear forming in typical fashion from nothing, Lacain's eyes widened ever so slightly, impressed once more by her ability to conjure something from effectively nothing. However, far more important was the moment when several of the Shae struck at his companion as she returned to his side. Their momentary distraction and the death of the male Shae, allowed him to do what he had been building up to with his secondary barrier all along.

Taking in a deep breath and closing his eyes for a moment, Lacain let the energies build for half a second and then in one surge the barrier blasted outwards, becoming a concussive blast of tremendous kinetic energy. The female Shae were unprepared for the attack and so it was that they were all sent hurtling into the cover of the trees, disappearing with shrieks, though the sounds of them striking the floor or trees never came. With them taken care of for a moment he shifted all of is focus to the gate and as such it finally opened, the petal-like slabs of stone locking into place around an arched opening. Beconing Iyl to step within, he glanced back at Asrin, whose horse now paced back and forth before the first line of trees closest to the cliff face. The knight of old met his eyes and in that glance Lacain understood that he need not worry for the man.

Nodding his thanks, Lacain followed Iyl through the opening and then released the spell, letting the energy he'd poured into it flow back out. It seemed like something in reality snapped back into place as he did so and so it was that the gateway was sealed behind them. Glancing at Iyl he smiled, "Well that was interesting," he said with a slight smile on his lips. "I didn't know you could manifest creations as part of your person. Especially considering that was definitively different from shapeshifting," he said with a chuckle before gesturing before them, wherein a tunnel with no discernible light source stretched on. Strangely, both would find they could see just fine in the cavern, despite there being no logical reason that they ought to.

Lacain, as they walked down the cavern, took stock of his presence and found it far more full than he might have thought. He'd done so much, yet he could still barely detect any noticeable drain. Even what he could feel was not at all something he'd have to worry about even if they had to struggle with some other force.

It was a strange feeling...the power he wielded. He knew that much of it was his own, but he also knew that much had come from Teraem and those who had preceded him. Oddly...it all, aside from Teraem's distinctive energy, felt like his. He frowned slightly at the thought, not sure what to think of it. It would be something to study when he had the time...perhaps Iyl could even help him figure it out.

Iylma'tria

Iyl watched with an intrigued expression as Lacain released his final spell. As the female Shae disappeared from sight, a solemn frown befell the female mage's features. She didn't like causing harm to other living beings. It wasn't in her nature. Be that as it may, she'd had no choice in this situation, if she had the outcome might've been different.

When Lacain beckoned her to step into the cavern, she obliged, only to glance back at him a moment later. This movement allowed her to see the shared understanding between her friend and her summoned knight before she started walking down further into the cavern. When she heard Lacain's footsteps inside the cavern, an apologetic smile formed on her lips. "Return. Asrin." Iyl spoke just as Lacain released the magic he'd been using to hold the archway to the cavern open.

Outside, the holy knight who had arrived to aid them in their hour of need began to fade away into naught but a golden light. Once the knight's form was completely gone, the light shot through the swiftly closing opening just before it was completely sealed, and "pierced" Iyl's body. A gasp left the woman's lips as her energy returned to her, the strength of it almost knocking her off of her feet. She didn't know what Lacain would think about what she'd just done as she'd never shown him what happened to summons when they were no longer needed for their designated task. Part of her was worried. She might have to explain to him that summons used for battle weren't the same as those he'd seen her bring into the world. If she left them to their own devices it was possible not only that they could become bloodthirsty, but also that they could sap energy from her whenever they wanted. Admittedly, she wasn't sure if they could actually do such a thing, but she was unwilling to risk it.

No matter how trustworthy the summon seemed.

Taking a moment to look at the cavern as they walked, Iyl wasn't too surprised that they were having no issue seeing, she could feel a charm woven into the stone on either side of them. Almost as if the cavern was man-made. She wondered, for a moment, if someone had made this place, what they would have constructed it for. What was it holding that they needed so badly for it to be hidden?

When Lacain caught up to her and began speaking, she was slightly surprised. Granted, they'd been fighting for the last few minutes, but since he'd brought her here he hadn't really spoken much. She found herself smiling at his inquisitive statements, and at him. "Interesting indeed." She responded with a small laugh, her hands clasping behind her back as she continued to walk.

"What you saw is something that I only just recently learned how to do," She paused, the briefest of contemplative looks on her face before she continued, "Both of us are largely unaware of the extent of what I can do, I think. Unless you've been holding out on me." She winked, laughing softly.

The two mages walked in silence for a time before a weight settled itself in Iyl's chest. Something in the cavern was filling the woman with a heavyset sense of dread. So much so, that she had to actively fight the urge to turn away from the continuing path and go back to the now sealed archway. It didn't feel as though they were even that far into their trek, so why? Why was her stomach in knots? Once again she found herself wondering what was in this cavern. What were they looking for?

Most importantly, was Lacain feeling the same thing she was? Was he just as uneasy?

As if trying to will the answer out of her friend, her eyes found his face, where they stayed for a long moment before she looked ahead again. In the darkness of the cavern, though they could see clearly, there was evidence of a dimming light far ahead of them.

Was that their destination?

Lacain

Hearing her words Lacain glanced at his friend and raised an eyebrow before opening his mouth to ask a question. No sooner had he decided to do so however, he was interrupted by a swift ray of golden light rushing past him and slamming into and through Iyl. Eyes widening he took a step towards her, worry in his eyes before his senses noted that it had been her energy he'd seen. Stopping just short he stared at her, a mixture of confusion and intrigue in her eyes. "Well...that's new," he said, his eyes still locked on her for a long moment before she began to walk. He followed.

After a few moments of walking, and thinking on his part, he spoke up. "So, what was that exactly?" he queried. Following her response he frowned slightly then nodded, before his expression returned to normal. "Huh..." he'd say quietly, before falling silent once more. He supposed that if his energy was visible most times, it would do just what hers had done when he had released his energy from the seals in the entrance to the cavern they now walked through. Still, it was an odd thought.

Nearer and nearer they came to their destination, though he did not exactly know what awaited them. His attention divided as he made sure to reach with his senses to attempt to find any possible dangers that might await them, Lacain listened to Iyl with interest, though as she fell silent, his smile faded. He did his best to hold off the sadness that welled deep in a corner of his mind, suppressed. As they trudged further into the cavern, Lacain felt a slight pressure build around them, a sort of tension. After awhile and Iyl's look, he extended a field of energy around them attempting to locate and remove the sensation.

While it seemed to be affecting her more than it was him, it was still unpleasant. After several attempts, he found that his barrier did nothing to make the sensation cease. Sighing he decided to instead shift the energy in the aim of assuaging the building tension, as he cast a spell of calm over both himself and Iyl. With the sensation dampened, he spoke, "So...what do you think it is that Teraem left here for me to find?" He glanced at her briefly before turning his eyes forwards again.

Meanwhile, in his mind, he felt a stirring. What remained of Teraem and his predecessors appeared to be at work. Frowning slightly, Lacain made a subtle distinction between their consciousness and his own before he began weaving energy within his own body. He wasn't sure why, but he felt almost...threatened by the presence of others in his mind. He had really only ever been comfortable with Iyl when it came to mind links. Even with Teraem it had always been awkward.

He wondered why....

Iylma'tria

When Lacain commented on her energy re-entering her body, she chuckled softly, glancing over at him with a warm smile even before he asked her what it was that had happened. "Well, the short version is that when I end a summon spell the energy I used in that spell returns to my body because--depending on the summon's use--it was using my energy to sustain itself. So, when I end its time, the energy it was taking from me returns." She spoke softly, the conversation keeping her mind off of the uneasy feeling she was having. However, when she heard Lacain's response, she couldn't help but glance at him with an inquisitive look of her own.

"So, what did it look like to you?" Her voice cracked slightly when the question left her lips, revealing the nervousness she felt in asking it. "I-I mean... I've never really been able to see it myself, you know?" She stuttered, trying to give reason to something she likely didn't actually need to. While waiting for her friend to respond, the cavern once again fell into silence, leaving her mind only able to focus on one thing: the knots in her stomach.

As the two continued on in silence, Iyl felt Lacain begin some spellwork. She took this as a sign that he was feeling the same uneasiness that she was, and exhaled in a sigh of relief. When it appeared that Lacain's barrier would do nothing, she felt him try something else. When the second spell was finished, a wave of calm poured over every inch of Iyl's body. She hadn't realized just how tense she was as muscles in her back and legs began to relax, allowing her to fall into a more steady stride than the one she had previously been in.

A moment passed before she looked at him in gratitude, listening to his question as they continued to walk. She thought about it for a few moments before her hands began running through her hair. What could he have left him? Teraem was a very private and stoic individual when he really wanted to be. In truth, there was no real way to tell what it could be. In realizing that, she let out a sigh and decided to take a guess.

"Well... knowing Teraem, there's no telling." She spoke honestly, her hands falling to her sides as she continued to think. "Though, along that same vein, it's entirely possible he left you a large tome full of knowledge," She paused as something dawned on her. Teraem was the master of weird gifts.

"Lacain, do you still have that mirror Teraem gave you as a birthday present when we were kids?" Her question might've seemed frantic, or strange given the circumstances, but she had a reason for it, and it would likely dawn on Lacain as well when he heard her next question. "Didn't it have some sort of enchantment on it that we couldn't figure out at the time?" As the question left her lips, she noticed something.

The dimming light she had noticed earlier was getting closer.

It was possible that they would know the answer to Lacain's question within a few minutes.

Lacain

Briefly pondering her answer to his question regarding the rush of energy, Lacain nodded. "Well I can say it looks interesting. However, rather than describe it I can show you," he grinned at her and then sent some of his energy back through the cavern the way they had entered. After a moment of shifting the spell within it and making sure it'd do him no ill, he motioned for her to stop walking as he did the same. Then he held up his closed fist for her to see. Once her attention was on him, he opened his fist, leaving his palm flat and a rush of golden light appeared from several meters behind them and then slammed through him, causing him to glow briefly before fading, leaving his eyes with a slight glow, before they too returned to normal. He smiled at her, "It looked something like that," he said simply before the two continued.

Glancing at her when she attempted to answer his question regarding what might reside further into the cavern, Lacain nodded. Then she brought up something he'd almost forgotten. "Oh, I do have it, but it's not with me. Of course if we were anywhere else that wouldn't be an issue. Unfortunately, I can't bring it to me due to the spellwork on this cavern," he ran his fingertips along the wall. "Nonetheless, I do remember the mirror. We might be able to figure out what it does now..." he said a bit absently, his eyes glazing slightly as he thought of when he'd received what had been his first gift from Teraem.

After a moment he cleared his throat, noticing the intensity of the cavern's illumination rising. "It seems we've nearly reached our destination," he proclaimed, though he figured that Iyl had thought the same.

Then his wards went off, warning him of danger. Immediately his hand shot out and gripped her shoulder--perhaps a bit too tightly--so as to stop her movement as he did his. Before them the cavern seemed just as normal as it was where they stood, yet his senses told him otherwise. "Something's wrong," he said, likely just as confused and apprehensive as his friend was.

As he extended his senses in front of them he noticed an interruption in the spellwork of the cavern. "I...I think the spellwork of the cavern past this point is damaged, which doesn't bode well," he said, only for Iyl's convenience. "I'm not sure how safe the path will be from here on out," he glanced at her, before looking ahead of them--the action a bit too hurried. He couldn't imagine losing his closest, and likely now his only friend, so soon after having lost his master. He grit his teeth.

She could defend herself, but...no one was perfect.

As if to reinforce his fears, the walls shook and the floored shuddered beneath them. He braced them with an instinctually cast spell. "I don't like this," he muttered as things quieted before again falling silent, conflicted.

He didn't know what to do.

Iyl watched as Lacain demonstrated what it looked like when her energy returned to her body. When he finished and looked at her with a satisfied expression, she was beaming. It looked amazing. Absently she blurted out, "Your eyes are pretty when they glow." An embarrassed expression washed over her face, and she covered her mouth as her cheeks began to redden. "Sorry..." The mage mumbled through her hands, glancing away from him.

As the two walked and talked, Iyl listened to Lacain as he told her he couldn't teleport the mirror to their location. She nodded. Of course he couldn't. That would have been too easy.

Agreeing silently when Lacain said they were closing in on their destination, she was caught off-guard when he reached out and grabbed her shoulder. His grip was tight enough that it made her wince slightly, and she glanced at him from the corner of her eye listening as he made his assessment of the situation audible.

"Lacain, I want to go with you, but I don't think the wards on this place would like that very much." She spoke after a few moments of silence, her senses attuning to the surrounding enchantments. It seemed as though only certain energy signatures were allowed beyond the point they were standing, and Lacain's was one such energy.

At this knowledge, the female mage sighed before gently removing Lacain's hand from her shoulder and taking a few steps behind him. "Go. I'll be here." She spoke somberly before leaning her back against one of the cavern walls and sliding down it to reach a sitting position.

She wanted to go with him. She wanted to see what Teraem had given Lacain with her own eyes.

Somehow, though, she knew that wouldn't be possible. This would be a journey only Lacain could take.

Lacain

Chuckling lightly as she blurted her compliment, Lacain smiled at her for a moment before assuring her that it was fine. The embarrassment and awkwardness didn't last long, luckily enough. However, not so luckily he had to make a decision as to whether or not he should bring her along. Yet, before he could make the choice, she decided to stay behind. He glanced back at her as she took a seat, his expression a mixture of grateful and torn. "Alright...if you're sure," he said before pausing a long moment, still looking at her. Finally he turned away, braced himself, and said "I'll be back."

He then strode past the point of no return. When nothing happened he continued on, straining his senses to detect any danger. The magical energies surrounding him appeared to be in flux, it was unsettling, like some kind of magical anomaly or the like. Eventually and strangely without incident, he found that the cavern opened up into a large chamber. At the far end on a rune inscribed pedestal and upon it sat what appeared to be a sphere of white light so bright that whatever caused it was hidden by its resplendent glow. Staring in awe, he noted that the magical flux was strongest around the sphere. "What is this," he wondered quietly as he slowly made his approach.

He noticed, that despite his proximity to the strange anomaly, his uneasiness had faded almost entirely. It was strange, he mused, thinking that perhaps whatever this was had simply not wanted Iyl to grow near to it. Frowning at the thought, Lacain grew impatient with the object, his respect for what power it might hold fading as he considered the possibility that it might bear ill will for his friend. His gait quickened and he soon found himself washed in the light of the sphere. Now that he was closer he found that the runes carved upon the pedestal glowed faintly, their light somehow not lost in the greater luminescence of what he could now see was a ring. Reaching out, his frustration having fled him, Lacain felt his energies collide with those of the ring and the runes beneath it. Briefly the energies fought his own, but despite their intricacy and the ancient power that had been stored within them, they could not stop him from pulling the ring from the pedestal and into his hand.

As the artifact left its place, all illumination fled from the cavern aside from a far more subdued glow, which emanated from the ring.

Gazing down upon the strange ring, Lacain wondered if he should slip it on or not. It was only when he felt the whisper of his master's consciousness that he knew it was not to be done here.

Nodding as if in response to the man, Lacain gathered his energies and conjured a shock of cloth, which he wrapped the ring within, before stowing it in his coat. Turning away from the room, Lacain headed back the way he had come, a serious expression on his face.

After several minutes he returned to where he'd left Iyl, if unwillingly. He looked at her, then nodded his head in the direction of their exit. “Let's go...I can feel the magic draining from this place,” said the man, reaching down to help her to her feet.

As she rose, the cavern shivered and a terrible creaking could be heard all around them. “Quickly,” he said, before he took off at a brisk pace, heading in the direction of the exit. While he could have possibly risked transporting them beyond the cavern, he didn't dare try, as if any of this place's magic remained, they might end up embedded in stone, their bodies merged on the deepest level with the material.

So it was that he did not use such a spell, either within the cavern, nor to exit it. Hopefully they could escape before the place came down upon them.

Hopefully.

The mage watched in silence as her friend left to go beyond the wards where a gift from his master awaited him. As she waited for him to come back, her mind drifted to Teraem, wondering why he would've made Lacain trek out this far into the wilderness just to give him a gift. What was so special about it that it needed to be hidden? And why in a cave that wouldn't even allow her passed the wards?

What had he been hiding?

Just as she was getting nervous about Lacain's time away, she heard his footsteps as he made his way back to her. When he reached down to help her up, she grabbed his hand and stood. As the cavern began to shudder and tremble, Iyl followed after Lacain as quickly as she could. In the distance she could hear as rocks began to fall from the ceiling of the tunnel.

The place was very quickly becoming a deathtrap.

As if reading her thoughts, the falling rocks began to catch up to them as they neared the sealed archway.

She only hoped Lacain could open it faster than it had taken him before, otherwise, they were done for.

Lacain

Swiftly reaching the only exit they knew while the cavern fell apart, bit by bit, around them, Lacain placed his hand on the closed gateway and closed his eyes. Sending a pulse of energy through the structure revealed that its enchantments had already been compromised by the collapse of the cavern. He checked the surrounding spellwork and then, as he heard portions of the cavern further behind them truly begin to collapse he opened the floodgates that held back his tremendous mana, and remade the enchantments from a mixture of personal memory and the memories of his predecessors, which was not entirely something he was used to.

In the process, the space in his mind he had partitioned off for the other consciousnesses, cracked and began to dissolve. However, he had no time to fix that while also forcing the gate to open. It took roughly 20 more seconds before the enchantments were renewed, with his modifications, at which point the stone beneath his hand parted rapidly. "Go!" he yelled over the sound of the cavern, biding his companion exit first. He knew she might protest, so his mana moved her along some.

Once she'd passed through he spread his mana throughout the cavern complex, doing so out of instinct from his predecessors, before he let the door open just that much more. Then, in a sudden movement he slipped through the open space, and let his hand slip from the stone. In an instant the gateway closed, the markings vanished, and there was a rumbling as the cavern fully collapsed. However, aside from the rumble, there were no visible changes to the cliff face or, from what he could sense, the land at the top of the cliff.

Letting out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding, Lacain let himself fall to his knees, hand against the stone to steady himself. He held a cautioning hand up towards Iyl as he spoke, "Sorry, just need a moment to recover." He trailed off near the end as his focus turned to reconstructing the separation between his Self and those of his predecessors, including Teraem.

After a moment he pushed himself to his feet and sent a pulse of energy out into their surroundings. Oddly, it appeared that the Shae were not approaching them, nor were they particularly nearby. He glanced at Iyl, "Sorry, just, the spell was a bit...overwhelming. Shall we get out of here? Hopefully to somewhere safe and comfortable. I'd like to examine what I found, and I'm sure we could both use some...time." His eyes turned from hers as she said it, his demeanor briefly shifting as he recalled that much of his beloved master was gone, reduced to a mere slice of consciousness within him.

Recomposing himself he looked to her again he asked, "Do you have anywhere in mind?"

Iyl watched as her friend began his spellwork with his hand on the sealed archway while the cave rumbled and spit rocks at them. They were on a massive time constraint, but it seemed as though he would be able to pull through and open the seal much quicker than anticipated. As she watched him work, her senses picked up something strange with his energy; it seemed unstable. It was writhing.

Before the mage could really focus in on what was going on, she saw the archway crack open, and was told to go. As she was about to protest she felt his energy begin to swirl around her and push her toward the exit. With a disgruntled sigh she made her way through the opening as quickly as she could, turning back to look at him when she was free. A look of terror spread across her face as the worst thought passed through her mind. What if he didn't make it? What if she lost not only Teraem, but her best friend as well? What would she do then?

While a crisis broke out inside the woman's mind, her eyes were glued to the cavern. She felt it as Lacain's energy stretched out within the cavern in what she perceived as a final attempt to push the door open. He succeeded. Iyl watched as he nearly leapt through the cavern's opening. As his body moved just out of reach, the cavern's archway snapped shut as if it were the maw of a great beast.

Then, as if none of the events of the passed hour or so had happened, the markings that denoted the cavern's location disappeared, and Iyl felt a strange sense of peace as a foreign energy she hadn't noticed before dissipated into the air.

Before she could stop herself, Iyl rushed to the fallen mage's side, and threw her arms around his neck. As her body connected with his in her largely one-sided embrace, energy from her seemingly endless mana pool poured into him. She knew he needed it, but she was also hoping that it might help the still writhing energy that wreathed his body.

She couldn't tell what it was that was happening to him, and it worried her.

"You jerk!" Iyl's voice cracked as she whispered the words against Lacain's shoulder. When she realized she'd spoken, she also noticed that her entire body was shaking. It was all she could do to keep from crying for the second time that day.

She wouldn't burden Lacain like that. Not right now.

When he pushed himself to his feet, Iyl stayed sitting on her knees for a few moments longer, listening to him as he apologized because the spell took so much out of him with her head bowed, staring at her now folded hands. For a long time after he finished speaking, she didn't move or speak, simply sat staring at her hands.

After a few minutes of silence passed, and he asked her if she knew of a place they could go, she stood.

She did know of one place.

Without a word she gestured for him to step away from the cliff face. Once he had, her mana began to pool in her hands. Carefully, slowly, she brought her hands together as if she were saying a prayer, and a golden shock started between her two open palms until they were pressed against each other. Her eyes closed for a few moments as she pictured the place in her mind. When she had it clearly visible behind her eyelids, she raised her closed palms above her head and then slowly parted them facing toward the cliff's base. Slowly, she began moving her open palms down and further apart. Eventually, she had made a large oval of golden energy about Lacain's height and twice his width. Knowing that it was complete, she opened her eyes, allowing the image in her head to become the image within the oval.

After a moment, a large green field was visible within the golden portal, a clear dirt road leading to what appeared to be another university. One much larger than even Teraem's. When the image was complete, Iyl stepped aside to allow Lacain through. "Go first. I have to keep the portal open. It'll close immediately after I've passed through." She spoke calmly, her eyes not really meeting his though they were resting on his face.

Once Lacain had passed through, she followed, the portal snapping shut as soon as her body was free of it on the other side.

For a moment, she glanced at him, before starting to walk up the dirt path toward the university.

Lacain

While he awaited her reply he smiled a bit to himself at her earlier actions. It was good to know that someone cared enough for him to worry so over his wellbeing--though he'd been fairly certain he'd be fine. Respectfully he gave her some time to recover, understanding how she must feel. They'd both lost someone dear to them already, so surely the thought of losing someone else so soon after was...well, unbearable. Swallowing the emotions that rose at the thought, Lacain took a deep breath or two to steady himself before he noticed her rise and motion him away from the sheer rock. Moving out of her way he watched with interest as her energies built, focused, and then began to manifest in her hands. After a moment he closed his eyes and let his other senses watch her weave her unique brand of magic. it didn't take long for him to see what she was doing, though her method was, as usual, different from the norm.

It was strange, seeing two disjointed locations connected by the aperture she'd created. However, he took only a moment to assess the construct before heeding her advice and step through so as not to unnecessarily burden her. He glanced behind himself briefly once he'd passed through, watching as she stepped through and the portal shifted shut. It was strange to see, but he didn't dwell on it long before turning to see where exactly they'd ended up.

Raising a hand briefly, palm upwards and at waist height, he created a sphere of light, before letting his hand fall. The shining orb rose above their heads before flaring up and illuminating their surroundings more than the two moons that shone overhead--though they were only half of all the moons that existed.

His eyes adjusting to the new light, Lacain found himself gazing upon the expansive citadel that stood a ways from them. His eyes narrowing slightly, Lacain stretched his senses only to briefly find them turned back on him, before his focus shattered and he staggered a step back. "Agh, time magic," he muttered absently, the slight pain in his head swiftly dissipating.

Turning to Iyl he asked, "Are you sure I'll be allowed in?"
