This is a story of magical elements in a real world. A story of mystics, madmen, oracles, monsters, and Wizards; of racism and slavery, politics and war, corruption and creation, faith and logic. But it is set in the real world, it is surrounded by real events, and real people, and real-istic heroes. It begins in the town of Sintra, overlooked by the beautiful Sintra Mountains in Portugal, circa 1666. You are a person who lived in this small, partly coastal city on the day after the horrific events took place for one reason or another. From barmaid to banker, and explorer to saint, all who survived did so by seeking refuge in the mostly intact castle or barely intact monastery.

Those in power, who can culminate, fabricate, and discard with history in the most lethal of whims, seek a way to rid the world of the Dragon, and plunder any treasure that may accompany the beast into his dreams. It is to the courts dismay that on the docket to be killed the very next day is a man purporting to be the “Dread Captain Scar”, a mythical pirate and monster-killer. They free him, ask that he form a team of Monster Hunters, and with the blessings of the church, go into Morocco, where the Dragon’s lair is said to be, and end the creature’s ungodly life. You are among the potential hunters. You may be strong or weak, smart or dull, Christian or Muslim or Pagan or Heathen; a rogue, an explorer, a monk, a historian, a scholar, or a prostitute. Whatever your skill set or affiliation, you will be chosen to attend this journey, chosen to undertake this most righteous of paths... this is righteous, isn’t it?

What the unwary voyagers of this expedition don’t know, and what they could never know, is that they are about to enter a world of fantasy. A world only ever spoken of in fairytales. The world that they knew to exist will have its ramparts blasted open, and the light of the truth may blind whoever dares step through the crumbled wreckage of the lies which kept them hostage there. Though you were brought aboard the recently furbished ship of Emilio Cicatrise as a means of providing more man-power or seeking the truth of the night before, you set sail for your final destiny all the same. Just as Emilio ventures forth to seek his truer nature in the heart of Morocco, so too do you.

This is a revision of an RP I ran several months ago. There are some events which have occurred since the mythic night in Sintra in which the Dragon attacked. There’s a hider above which closely outlines these events, no need to fully read it now. I wanted to provide an example of how fleshed out this world is. There will be a beastiary when the RP launches which will detail all the creatures we have and will discover during the course of the RP. We will start the RP with our party getting off of Emilio’s vessel, the ‘Padre Etemo’, at the port of Mogador a fairly populous city on the coast of Morocco. The quest for the Dragon begins then, as the travelers seek the key to their fate. From there they trek into the berating heat of the Sahara as they ignorantly follow destiny’s path.

I quite like this idea a lot, I've had my knack for historical-fantasy RPs as of late.

I'll get a character sheet up right away ^.^!

We're starting out the campaign technically before the ship docks, so the bit about her going to the markets technically has not happened. Other than that, it's pretty good. Why don't you try fleshing out what Artemisia's role on the ship was during the important moments detailed in the previous events section.

My character sheet:

Name: Omero da Roma

Age: 28

Gender: Male

Birthplace: Italy/Rome

Religious Affiliation: Catholic Christian (previously pious Catholic but has started become disillusioned with religion after witnessing the brutality it has displayed towards others)

Secular Affiliation: Papal Inquisition>Red Cross (Monster Hunters)

Level of education: High: Has been rigorously educated by the monks and nuns: can speak a number of European languages. Also been taught to read and write Italian and Latin as well as basic Mathematics.

Social status: Agent of the Catholic Church and inquisition, so although not high within the status of the church itself. He has a lot of authority within society, giving him the right to pass justice on people.

Occupation: Member of a branch group of the Inquisition; the Red Cross.

Appearance: Omero is a reasonably tall, slender man. He is very pale skinned despite presumably being born in Italy, implying his parents were not Italian. He has long dark brown hair that extends down to the back of his neck. Omero is also blinded in his right eye due to an unknown incident. His right eye also has a deep scar over it which is likely linked to the cause of his blindness. Despite this scar many women consider him rather attractive. Omero wears a long black cape, under which he wears a short black robe with black trousers. He also wears a black rounded hat. The cape contains various compartments which Omero uses to store the majority of his gear. By his side always hangs a rapier as well as having a light crossbow slung on his back. He also wears a rosary around his neck.
Basic Concept Image for clothing: jadeshannonsmith.files.wordpress.com/2..

Personality: In comparison to the other members of the Red Cross, Omero is more laid back and kind hearted, often joking around and taking great enjoyment in the thrill of monster hunting. He has a very hard morale compass and will do anything to protect ordinary people and refuses to harm anyone who is innocent. Due to being raised in a strict rule based environment Omero can find social situations awkward, particularly if a woman starts to flirt with him as he is unsure how to respond. Despite this he can deal with social interactions much better than other members of his order could.

However, when facing his enemies, Omero can also be shown to have a colder and even slightly sadistic side to him. He will brutally kill monsters and people who he deems as evil and well and being willing to torture them if need be.

Skill set: Expert swordsman (Rapier), Master marksman (Crossbow), Master investigator, skilled trap setter, Knowledge Monsters, Knowledge Religion, Knowledge law.

Languages: fluent in Italian, French, decent in Spanish and Portuguese, knows a bit of English and poor in German.

Bio:

Prologue: Omero was an orphan left as a baby at the door of one of Rome’s churches. Omero was raised by the churches Monks and Nuns and educated on many matters. During this time Omero became very well acquainted with the Monks and Nuns and cared very little for who his birth parents were. When Omero was 13, he was placed into the service of Lorenzo Porrazzo head of the newly founded ‘Red Cross’ organisation. The Red Cross was a branch group from the Catholic inquisition and focused on training experts to combat ‘Creatures of Darkness’ and ‘worshipers of Satan’.

Over this time Omero trained alongside two other boys and two other girls very rigorously in various different skills and traits. Omero was trained to use both the sword and crossbow along with a number of other skills needed to hunt and fight monsters. By the time Omero was 18 he and the rest of the children were sent out into the world to hunt evil beings. Omero took great joy both in the thrill of tracking these monsters and bring justice upon these evil doers whose actions brought misery on the innocent. Over his time in the Red Cross Omero has defeated numerous monsters alongside the other members of the red cross, including; vampires, a werewolf, harpies and numerous dark cultists.

However as the years progressed the Red Cross became used more for hunting people for political reasons rather than its original purpose. Omero had to detain and ‘interrogate’ people who he believed were guilty of nothing more than having a different belief to the Catholic Church. One day Omero was ordered by Archippo De Santis, head of the inquisition, to make an example of a man who defied the Pope himself. He was told to lock him and his family in his house and set it on fire. For the first time ever Omero doubted the orders of his superiors, believing that the man and his family should at least be put on trial before facing such a horrific death. However Omero chose to trust Archippo De Santis believing that the family must be certainly be satanic worshipers or worst. After Omero had begrudgingly carried out the order he was horrified to find out that the man had done nothing more than say that he believed that religion should not hinder the progress of science. After this Omero found his faith in the catholic religion shaken and inside slowly started to lose his faith in both the church and god.

After various reports of a rising cult group in Portugal the Church decided to send one of the members of the Red Cross to investigate the situation. After Omero was the only surviving member out of the three remaining Red Cross agents (after two of them mysteriously disappeared) who could speak both Spanish and Portuguese, the church decided that he would be the most well suited to investigate this threat while the other two members remained in Italy to respond to any ‘threats’ the papacy may face.

Omero took a small trading ship to Spain where he disembarked at Aragon. With funds the Catholic Church had supplied him with for this mission Omero paid for a horse in a nearby town and proceeded through Spain on horseback. This was the first time in a while that Omero had been sent on a mission without backup from either the other agents of the Red Cross or from the Inquisition. The long Journey through Spain was mostly un-eventful with the exception of an attack by a group of violent bandits (to which Omero quickly and rather ruthlessly dispatched). After a two and a half weeks of riding through Spain Omero finally made it to Portugal.

Part 1: After arriving in Sintra Omero receives a message from Archippo De Santis claiming that the cultists had already left Portugal and are currently residing in Morocco. As Morocco was not within Christendom Omero was ordered to cancel his Mission (much to his dismay). Omero remained in Sintra for a week and was present during the dragon attack. Unlike many of the town people Omero survives the attack and is left relatively unharmed by the ordeal. After hearing about Emilio’s mission to Morocco Omero grew suspicious of his true intend and joined the crew after receiving new commands from the Red Cross. His orders were clear, assist the crew in hunting down the dragon and keep a watchful eye on both the ship captain and his crew. Omero is currently sending updates to the Red Cross via a Quaesitor Messenger Bird; the Quaesitor Messenger Bird has the unusual ability to find both its sender and receiver regardless of where they are in the world (though Omero is unsure how this is possible he highly suspects that some form of magic is involved).

During his time aboard the Ship Omero has been keeping a low profile and has avoided drawing attention to himself. Though he helped during the battle with the harbinger he did so at a distance so no one would notice his true combat skill. To most people Omero has gone mostly unnoticed with the exception of Artemisia de Fiore to whom Omero has conversed with on a number of occasions.

Notes: None I can think of at the moment.

Being as historically-blind as I am to this setting, I will have to decline. If you ever find yourself in a roleplay set in Ancient Rome, I'm your man.

How important is knowledge of the historical period? This is not one of the areas I am overly familiar with...

Also. What posting pace do you envisage for the RP? Fast? Slow?

As interesting as this rp looks, I still haven't made good on my other offers/interests to join other rps yet. I don't think it would be fair to join this one before I have at least looked over and determine if they will fill up a spot I have. In addition, I'm debating on how full I want to make my plate and if I can give enough attention to this rp as it deserves. So, saying that I will have to decline for now. If something changes, however, I'll be sure to give this another look and if I get an idea, join later. Thanks for mentioning me however and I appreciate you thinking about me!

@The New Yorker: Also, hi Serge. Nice to see someone I know make it through the guildfall, I've been bumping into them off and on, and good luck with your RP.

Hold on, hold on.

I finish exams and return to RpG, as I often do with a burst of writing inspiration coinciding with an increase of free time.
I check the (unfortunately still dead) RPs I played a few months ago.
I come to the Advanced Interest Checks.
And THIS is here!

I was very sad about the previous death of this RP, and I loved my character.

Can I revise and reapply with the honourable Stefano Morosini, good New Yorker?

No need to know very much about the time, though, honestly, some knowledge is important. A summary glance at a few wiki pages ought to do if you truly are interested.

As I said before, an understanding of the time period and basic local politics is decidedly important. But I find that enough can be garnered through the internet for a working knowledge base. As for the posting pace, obviously I'm not very uptight about when you post, so long as you do. I've already broken my main rules, however, I didn't warn anyone about my brief departure.

Please feel free to come back at any time and test the waters.

Hey there, pal! Glad to have you back. Feel free to post a primary cs if you'd like, I'd recommend waiting for the OOC however. I've made some changes to the cannon however, so I'd recommend you take a look at what's changed, and what hasn't. PM me if you have any questions.

I don't think I can overstate how happy I am with all this interest, even those who couldn't make a decision to join us today. Of course, everyone's inclusion is based upon the quality and robustness of their individual character sheet's, which I would recommend posting in the character tab of the OOC once it goes up. I would also recommend that everyone interested read the prologue material thoroughly before conceiving of a character. If there are any further questions, please PM me.

Finally, I'd like to thank @MacabreFox for bringing in so much fine potential.
