Hey1 Awesome! I'll finish up working on my character in the next day or so. As for the occult, I find it interesting. Old mythology and demonology is a really cool subject. I once wrote a short story where a private investigator stood in for King David and fought Asmodeus at a production of Mulan on Ice. It was silly.

I've only actually read one Lovecraft story and it was Shadow over Innsmouth, but I did read a short story collection of Lovecraft inspired stories called Shadows over Innsmouth. I am pretty familiar with his mythology and the types of characters he would write.

Hmm, fighting cosmic forces on ice, it does sound really, really silly!

That's more than most people have read, so I'm having high expectations for your character.

The thing with Lovecraft is that he gets repetitive rather fast. I can't read more than two or three stories successively before getting annoyed by how verbose he tends to be. That doesn't mean he's bad or anything, he's one of the most creative horror writers out there whose influence is felt almost everywhere in the genre now, it's just that the prose becomes a predictable bore when taken in huge doses at once. I made breaks while reading his work and read other books before returning to him.

He's great if you wanna get spooked during sleepless nights.

@Sigurd I agree, though I haven't been able to read any of his works for quite a while. I'm trying to get through something quite different from H.P. Lovecraft, but just as frightening; Mein Kampf. That book is written by a very angry German(Austrian to be technical, though he always saw himself as German himself).

@Sigurd 1. I love history and have been specifically interested in 19th-20th century politics, so why not read it?
2. With the resurgence of nationalism across the world, it's intruiging to read and recognize the rhetoric and justifactions that's being used today and was used by people like Adolf Hitler back in the 20's, 30's and 40's. History truly repeats itself.
3. It's fun to read what he thought and meant, and then to go "you crazy bastard, calm down!"

You did? How come you ended up reading a norwegian book?

1. Fair enough, man.
2. I've never been that much into politics, but I can actually understand why a lot of people turn to nationalism nowadays, seeing what the rhetoric and tactics of the left have turned into. It seems like a logical consequence of it all. We live in interesting times.
3. He forever ruined the image of a big part of the European spirit. What a shame.

Yeah, I did. I checked out some reviews and found it interesting, plus I received it as a gift, so I went for it. It was a pleasant read, I must say. It touched on some themes I like, like happiness, family, art, death and so on. I would say his honesty about himself is what made the book really popular. Says a lot, doesn't it? Everybody started reading the series because they finally realised that someone put their thoughts from pen to paper without any sort of filtering, which is, judging from the people's reaction, a rarity today. Reluctance and dishonesty everywhere!
It's not the only Norwegian author I've read. I also liked Hamsun and Ibsen, and I am looking forward to reading some more Norwegians (and Scandinavians in general)! :-)

@SigurdThat's a fresh air of wind to hear that, from what I've heard about it people has critized it for being too open. But then I'll consider reading it! Oh don't get me started on Hamsun and Ibsen. I've only read "Hunger"("Sult" in norwegian) by Hamsun, and I have to be honest when I say I did not like it. The book was better than the movie, but I still did't enjoy reading it. But it being seen as a masterpiece, I have no doubt about that, and it most certainly shook the world around him back then, so that's something.

Ibsen, now that's different. At first I didn't like Ibsen - you can thank the compulsory reading about him and "A dollhouse"("Et dukkehjem") for that - but after having read through his plays and playing "A dollhouse" in the style of a musical (which was one hell of a fun thing to do! :D), I've realized how good of a writer he was.

If I can recommend anything Norwegian? Not at the moment, I don't read a whole lot of books as of late, only books connected to my studies :/ Sorry, but I'll give you a heads-up if I find anything!

@ONLI've read Sult. Most people who dislike it think it was somewhat repetitive plot-wise, even though it's a really short book. You know, he is hungry, he suffers, he somehow gets saved in the last moment by a friend who suddenly appears or an article he manages to write (or sheer luck), and then back to suffering once his money is gone: repeat this several times and that's the book. If you disregard the plot and read it for how it describes the pains of an utterly broken man who slowly dwindles away to a mere sack of bones as excessive, stubborn, and self-destructive pride, moral dilemmas, and hunger -- that is hunger in every sense of the word: romantic, spiritual, cultural, sexual, and literal hunger -- eat him away (pun intended), it's suddenly a great novel.

And yes, Ibsen is a great playwright. Basically unavoidable if you are into theater.

@Sigurd It didn't feel short when I read it xD Then again, I read it as part of my studies and not for pleasure. But yeah, that's why it's a classic, and I can see why people thought/think so, it just didn't impress me all that much. But I guess his descriptions could fit a character in a H.P. Lovecraft-work, right?

Tell me about it :P We actually ended up making our own play back in highschool, based on all of his works, and our teachers thought it was good (enough for a standing grade, haha). Have you read Hedda Gabler or Per Gynt?

And what about you other folk, how are you all doing? Please don't mind me and Sigurd rambling on about litterature and all that fancy jazz :P

Edit: And just because I wanted to, I added pictures for all our offical NPC's! @Sigurd Would you like the honour of giving Sean O'Reilly a face?

I have been reading through the OOC, Character Sheets, and RP but I wanted to find out if you were accepting before I read too much. I got set back a bit by the holiday weekend, but I'll catch up and post a CS as soon as possible.

I was thinking of a poor WW1 veteran who suffered from shell shock, but I am still debating that. If I do play that character then they would have been in American Expeditionary Forces First Army. I believe there is already a character who had served in the same battles I planned for my character. I am thinking of what post war career he would have, being High School educated and too poor to go to school, I was thinking bartender/bootlegger or janitor.

This is by no means meant to sound obstructive to you playing a veteran, because I don't mind that. I'm just concerned that he might be too similar to the two WWI-veterans we already have in play. But by all means if he fits into the story, you have the green light from me.

Yeah, that was what I was thinking as well. I usually come up with a character while reading through the RP, so I will think of other ideas that might fit better without falling into twinning another character or two.

They sure could. Just replace poverty and hunger with an inexplicable cosmic being and voila! ;-)

Hah! Our GM was an actor! I bet you always play a bard in RPG's.

And no, I've not read them; but I've heard about them, though. One day I'll hopefully get to them!
