Genevieve was the youngest child of a socially unequal marriage that had briefly scandalised the royal court. Her father, Rob Duvall, was merely a knight who married high above his station. Rob's own father had made a good career in royal service, rising to become chamberlain to House Sullivan. But the Duvalls, though an old and respectable family, were genteel rather than noble; and only became landed after Rob's marrige to Marion Hawke, a cousin of _____, the woman who would become queen.
House Hawke was a very wealthy noble family, with many allies and connections. When the young Marion ran off to marry a no name knight, her father disinherited her. When her father died five years later, her older brother became Lord of house Hawke, and re-inherited her.
Despite this inauspicious start, the married couple soon prospered, thanks mainly to Marion's continuing prominence within the royal court, and the marriage of her cousin to the King. Rob was honored with military ranks, in which he proved himself a capable soldier. Further honors would be bestowed, and Rob and Marion Duvall were not only given lands, but also established themselves as lower nobles, and pledge fidelity to house Ainsworth, and thereby the King.
Genevieve was born almost two decades later, the youngest of Rob and Marion's eight children. Ten minutes after her twin Bianca was born, Ginny came into the world tiny and frail. It was a very complicated birth which resulted in her mother dying from septicemia a few day later. She was a tiny baby, and was not expected to live very long, but she defied the odds.
