So I have been playing TONS of FTL lately and I thought it might be cool to have a roleplay based in that game, if anyone is interested. You don’t have to have played the game before to participate either.
I’m not entirely sure what to do with a roleplay like this, but I had a few ideas. We could have the roleplay take place on one ship, and have each person play a single crewmember and possibly one person to decide what happens at each beacon on the way to the federation fleet, or some other destination if we don’t want to be a part of the rebel/federation journey. We could also have each person be a commander of their own ship, and decide their ships role/loyalty (like federation, or rebels, or even solo mercenaries or pirates.). In that case the crew of each of the ships would be more minor roles. Either way, one ship or many, we can have whatever kind of journey we want. Please post if you have any questions or ideas.

This is actually copy pasted from a post I made on a forum years ago. Depending on which people would rather do, single ship or multi ship RP, I will write up some character templates/example maybe. I'm thinking probably casual style, potentially large group.

I'd advise for going with the approach of everyone being one ship. Yeah you lose diversity on potential factions and whatnot by not letting everyone be a captain, but FTL has a focus on crewmembers to micromanage at stations and handling that in textual form sounds like a pain in the ass.

Also I don't like it on the basis that it'll end up having players talking to themselves as they'll be controlling however many dudes are on their ship.

As for a premise I don't got one other than pointing out the obvious, that if you're gonna go with the game's plot that you'll need to keep players from dawdling because of that urgency and needing to flesh out encounters more and trying to thread a plot. Because the game's cycle is pretty much combat encounters,warping into hazards, non-combat encounters with some choices, and a shop to resupply & repair every so often.

Also if you're gonna do some sort tabletop system I say use Lasers and Feelings. I don't think you're gonna get a whole lot of people who want to play with the minutiae of various ship systems.

I appreciate the input. I agree, one ship does seem like it would be better. I'm starting to get more of a plan in my head, I may end up posting a more focused check once I have it sorted out more. I'm thinking it doesn't necessarily have to be rigid in playing with the mechanics of the game, the flavor of the universe and the interesting races and factions are what interest me more. So everyone could be the crew, perhaps each person could take on a role, or it could be more democratic type operation. Maybe I could mostly control NPCs and non player created events, though I think it would be cool if everyone could discuss what kind of events would happen to the ship, long or short.

Also, @Jerkchicken, are you interested in possibly joining or just giving input?

I haven't played the game before but it definitely sounds interesting. I wouldn't mind being part of the crew. Keep me posted on any progress please.

@Ionalien, I don't really have any suggestions sorry. I agree with the points jerkchicken made, it'll probably be better for player interaction if we're all on the same ship,
